    A thing of beauty like that should not be forgotten. It is that moment where sport transcends, becomes something more; it becomes art.

      I'd argue it becomes more than art - it becomes spiritual.

    Gareth. What a player! What an era! Now, 120kg monsters and everyone injured. What does rugby expect? 20 phases! Game not designed for that! It is the balance between backs and forwards not flankers spread out across the field. Gareth. What a gent. What a player!

      That's what makes the try so great. First off, Phil Bennett doing something completely unexpected - and then the counter-attack was on. I can imagine the players thinking, "there's something on here, boys." Gareth Edwards is actually facing the wrong way at the start of the move.

    Phil Bennet's outrageous sidesteps, fantastic team interplay, and Gareth's finish ........... Oh Gareth! Simply the best player ever!! And I'm English. You've no idea how much it hurts for me to say that!!!

    No sliding down the turf, no playing invisible golf, no rocking an invisible baby in your arms, no waving your shirt in the air, no running to the crowd punching your team's emblem, no piling on top of each other resembling a mass-shag. Just a pat on the back.

    I have to agree that Phil’s genius made this great try and that the glory should be shared by all involved. By the way, the distillery’s products, and there are many, go down well at any time, but especially when my friends and I are watching Wales, on TV, playing and winning. Yes, I’m biased.

    A better brand of rugby in those days ;- more expansive, more entertaining and played by “normal sized men” with passion.
    “The Try” is credited to Gareth Edwards, but everyone seems to ignore the man who started it - Phil Bennett - with a catch, 3 side-steps committing 4 All Blacks. Yes, there was Edwards, Duckham. Gibson, JPR, Bevan, but don’t forget Phil Bennett, who was capped by Wales at every position in the backs except from scrum half and is probably “the most complete outside half” that the British Isles has ever produced, save only perhaps for Johnny Wilkinson.
    The commentator, Cliff Morgan MBE ( should have been knighted ). His eloquence in saying “If the greatest writer of the written word had written what we have just witnessed, no man would have believed him”.

    • @ambadad
      @ambadad 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen many comments about the try but not one mentioning the burst of pace from John Dawes. So here is a little appreciation to rectify that just for him. It's a piece of action that transcends its own sport, like Bob Beamon's long jump or Ali beating Foreman. And how lucky was Edwards as a scrum-half to play with both Bennett and John?

      Ive always said that not only Welsh but the Celtic nations have been under rewarded in most fields . It makes things more hard to except when you look at some of the English side of sport and other professions .

    When he hit the ball he was going flat out. The NZ winger would have got sent off twice for high tackles.

      JPR Williams got stomped on the face twice in a match before that playing for Bridgend. He basically stitched himself up, and went back into the game. He was a great rugby player, and one tough bastard. His courage and compete level were off the charts. And he never lost to the English, ha!

      It does. It was what Gareth Edwards shouted to Derek Quinnell before he passed - it means 'Throw it here, Der' - Der being short for Derek. If you'd have watched the video you'd have heard Sir Gareth explaining it. :-)
