- As my previous race videos have shown, Florida has much more to offer than it’s beaches and “Florida Man” stories. The Forgotten Florida trail race is an experience into what a vast majority of Florida has to offer, and RD Sean “Run Bum” Blanton put together one amazing course. Highlighting the beautiful Florida trail, wide open farmlands, and jungle-like forests, the race takes runners through an incredible point-to-point journey that should be on every trail runners bucket list.
As for me, I ran this race 4 weeks after setting the course record for the Just Survive 125 mile Ultra. I was feeling up to the challenge and wanted to test myself (and also build up a Badwater resume). Unfortunately, I was battling a knee injury that prevented me from achieving my target time, but I was still able to finish with a decent time and have one hell of a good time experiencing this amazing course! Please join me once again on another 100 mile journey, I hope you enjoy it and are inspired to do something amazing.

Your race videos are so entertaining. You do a great job breaking up the content into you speaking and showing us what's going on plus all the running. Thanks for sharing your experiences!!!
Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoy my style! I'll try and keep them coming.
This was so great, just watched with my boys after signing up for the 50! 🙌🏼
Florida Trail and Little Big Econ State Forest along the Econ River is a special place! Its's right in my hometown. I've hiked there many times and have paddled in that section of the river many times. I am not a runner but truly enjoyed this video, great job!
Thanks for keeping it real about your injury. Not “making excuses” at all! It’s insightful and relatable. I hope you recover and get better soon!
Thanks, watching the video back I was on the fence about including so much of me talking about it, but ultimately it was a big part of the journey so it felt disingenuous not to include. I'm back training and can't wait to heal up 100% and tackle the next race.
ur videos are such a inspiration to me and many others...huge huge respect from india
I'm originally from Florida. Live in Cali now. I was on Lindsay Phenix's crew at Badwater last year. The heat was brutal but living 38 years in Florida really helped. Good luck on your next entry!
Love you brother.Wish I could have a similar attitude.
Awesome job hanging in there and making a strong finish. 4 weeks was probably cutting it a little close and didn't give your body enough time to fully recuperate for this hard effort.
Love the channel. Glad I found it. Your race videos are really entertaining. I would love to see you do one about Badwater!
I was watching another video of a guy that got into Badwater. He said they consider the Keys100 pretty highly because of the heat. He also said that crewing for another runner helps your chances alot. Good luck and I hope you get in!
I'm really glad the youtube algorithm suggested this. Man, the Florida backcountry is gorgeous. Way to grind it to the end.
I appreciate you finding the video! There are some pretty awesome areas around Florida and you just need to know where to look.
Awesome video and nice jog grittin thru the pain
subscribing now, youve shared some things here that struck some inspiration and i have goals to do more thanks
This has to be one of the best ultra running channels out there. I can't believe how many races you cram in. Your fitness, mental toughness and the way you present the race on video, are on another level.
Keep up the great work, as soon as the knee/ back/ feet will allow 💪👍🏻🏃♂️🙂
I appreciate it, hopefully I can keep the videos coming! My training is going pretty well now, I think I should be ready for Georgia Death race at the end of March. After that I'm taking a few months to train for some pretty special races this summer. I really appreciate the kind words and I'm very happy there are those that like watching my videos.
Really appreciate you being transparent. Us mortals struggle with doubts and mental obstacles and seeing that you, the elite, get them too and how you process through them helps me realize all things are possible. Your outlook and constant SMILE inspires me. Thank you for being YOU !!!
Great video Mike. I am signed up for the 100 this Saturday (02/2024). The footage of the trails was good to see especially at night. Solid work on hitting your goal of sub 24 👍
I love how you preview the courses for the rest of us ❤
Again you rocked it. What a great story teller and you sure have some motivation. I have ran races with messed up knees and well you really have to dig deep. You wanted it so bad. Hope you are recovered and can not wait for your next adventure
Thank you, everything seems to be working now, and going forward I'm going to train and race smarter. Too many hard efforts in too little time was the main culprit, but luckily it seems I learned a lesson without any lasting damage (fingers crossed!).
Great GREAT video man! I have my first 50 mile ultra in a few weeks and this has pumped me up big time! Keep up the great work .
Joel! UK 🇬🇧
How did you do?!
Just got curious about ultra running and found your videos. I’m also in Florida so now I’ve got some goals to set and work to do. Thanks so much for sharing!
My pleasure! There are some amazing races and race directors all over Florida. Let me know if you need any recommendations!
Another great video man, keep up the great work. Running the Mississippi 100 March 3rd and hope to do my first video. Thanks for the inspiration
Good luck, and just remember to film EVERYTHING, even when you absolutely don't want to. My favorite clips always end up being the ones I forced myself to film, because in the moment the last thing you want is a camera in your face, especially when it's you holding it lol.
Congratulations!!!
Great video mate. 👌
Always a pleasure to watch your videos because of your attitude and outlook of situations you face! Keep up the hard work!
Thanks for sharing. I appreciate the honesty and am really impressed with your mental approach. That area has been a challenge for me.
Really enjoying your work. Keep it up!
Thank you for watching!
I’m thinking of doing this race next year because of this video!
I’ll check out some more of your videos.
Let me know if you have any questions on this race or others! I think this is an awesome race due to the many aid stations and awesome volunteers. The course is obviously amazing too, but the community and volunteers are what makes these special.
I loved this video. What an honest recap of the highs and lows a hundred mile can bring. Much respect for pushing on
I usually hike Charles H Bronson, recently got into running and been wanting to do it on actual trails but I’m scared the running will set off that chase instinct on any wildlife in there 😅😂😂 it’s always so lonely, I’ve never encountered anyone when I go… Awesome video!
Awesome video man! I’ve been training for my first marathon. I’m currently in week 5 of my 16 week program. But after I check my first marathon my heart is all in on the trails. With things like hard rock, Leadville, and who knows maybe one day cocodona!!! That has some time obviously but man I loved seeing your video. The Lee are a few trail runs coming up in Florida! I hope to enter one of them here soon!
Good luck with your marathon! I agree the trails are where my heart is. Road running is fun for different reasons, but trails are where I go to clear my mind and have an adventure. Let me know if you need info or tips on any ultras!
Wow very impressive even with that knee. You inspire me so much! Thank you for sharing.
Also hope you have a quick knee recovery!
Thank you, knee is feeling great now!
Brilliant work
Oh yes you inspired me, can’t run at the moment, due to Achilles, but I am staying positive and watching your videos keeps me dreaming of reaching my goals.
Love from the UK.
Good job on staying positive, and not rushing that recovery. I have a bad habit of not resting enough when something is hurting. Good luck!
Great video! I just signed up for this race next year so this was very helpful. I subscribed.
Awesome, it should be a good one next year. The RD is changing up the course a bit (for the better) so it should be even more fun than this year. I'll be out there volunteering most likely so yell hi when you see me :)
Just saw this today. I am going after my 2nd and hopefully successful attempt at the Georgia Death Race. I only made 50k of it on my first go. I am extremely excited but incredibly nervous about whether or not I can make it through to the finish. This was extremely helpful, watching you maintain focus and an amazing attitude when it was painful, I really appreciate your sharing. It definitely helps a bit with the anxiety I have swirling up! Congratulations to you!
Thank you very much! I'll see you at GDR, I was going to drop this year but I've been recovering well and don't want to miss out on those mountains. I hope to see you finish, just keep a smile and keep on pushing. I recommend watching the race directors video he just posted because he gives a lot of good advice on pacing and the route. Again, good luck and I hope to see you out there!
@Feet First Athletics will do, thank you! See you out there 🏃♀️
dude very interesting video, thanks so much man. incredible job you did brother, big inspiration.
Thanks for watching! 100 milers are definitely an adventure, never know what's going to happen!
Love the video and your channel!
You and matt further inspired me to get out and run after David goggans!
Saw you at death at dupuis looking forward to racing with ya next year.
Panthers aren't black though brother.
Thank you, and I look forward to racing as well! Honestly a variety of animals popped in my head until I realized it was a cow. I was actually most worried it was a hog because they can get pretty mean.
My body can only handle one of these a year so I really appreciate you detailing the course from start to finish. It makes my decisions easier. Thanks putting in the work. Also, what software do you use for the lines on the map?
I enjoyed watching this. Well done video. Did you have a particular injury to your knee? Did you injure it further by finishing the race?
I had experienced some pain during a previous race the month before which I thought was an LCL or patellar strain. I thought I was close to 100%, but around mile 20 or 25 I noticed a bit of discomfort and knew it'd be a rough remainder of the race.
I didn't think I was doing any additional damage until around mile 80 or 90, and that's when I started to worry about doing serious damage. I was prepared to take a few months off running because I was worried a strain turned into a tear, but now 3 weeks post race I'm back to running pain free, so I think I got really lucky.
To really get into detail, I think it was a tibialis anterior strain which caused my gait to change, and to put stress on my knee, which caused the LCL and petellar tendon issues. I think this was due to (a) doing so many races in so few months, and (b) racing aggressively and pushing myself to my limits so often. I'm happy this happened because I can now plan my future races more intelligently and choose which ones I want to race hard and which ones I want to race easy
Thanks for sharing. Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharring. PS: are your knee ok now? Greetings from Norway
Thanks for the watch, my knee is 100% now! I found that the pain went away when I ran in minimalistic footwear, so I trained in Luna sandals for a few weeks. I just ran another race last weekend and had 0 pain in my Lone Peaks.
@@FeetFirstAthletics happy to hear that. Will buy a pair of Luna Sandals when I go to Spain this summer. My prefered shoe at the moment is NNormal Kjerag. Kjerag is close to my home and its an amazing spot😊

Hey man loving these videos massive well done on smashing all these ultras out! Have you ever ran distances like this in more minimalist footwear or sandals, any thoughts on that kind of footwear for these distances? Thank you love from UK
Funny you mention that, I am actually training in minimalistic sandals (Luna's and Earth runners) due to the injury I mentioned in this video. Long story short I went for a few small runs after this race and noticed no pain in sandals. In shoes? Knee and shin pain. Aside from some tired calves I feel great, and I think the transition to sandals is going well due to using zero drop shoes for the last 18 months and wearing minimalistic sandals pretty much every I go aside from work.
I did a 12 mile run and 20 mile hike using my Luna's and they felt great, so I'm planning on running some future races in them, maybe even one at the end of March for a race I have in the Georgia mountains. I also have a few races coming up in summer where I'm definitely using them.
The vegan comments with the cows mooing in the background. LMFAO!
I'm not sure if you can tell in the video but EVERY SINGLE cow had their head on a swivel watching me. I'm sure they were confused by the amount of people lol
Hey there. Thanks for your great video. I just signed up for the 2024 race. What would be your recommendation for weekly miles when training for a 100? I’ve been hearing between 50-75 with more focus of “time on feet” than total miles. Thanks 🙏
Apologies for the late response. That's exactly what I'd recommend, I usually average 60 miles per week and max out around 80. I'll usually do a 4 week training block like 60/70/55/30 with the 30 mile week being recovery. I don't do over 3 "heavy" weeks in a row because I start to notice too much fatigue and lack of performance. Sometimes I'll dven do 2 very heavy weeks following by a recovery week if I need it.
The most important thing is consistency. I'd rather average 40 or 50 miles per week over the course of 3 months as opposed to averaging 70 and needing to take a week off completely every few weeks. Time on feet is also important because late during a race you're legs will be aching, and the extra time on feet from the slower runs prepares you for that.
Power walking is also a huge benefit. I can power walk 14 minute miles deep into a race whereas I could only do 17-18 minute miles when I started. I suggest doing some walk run intervals of 5 minutes run/1 minute walk to get your legs prepared for the constant starting/stopping and transitioning from run to walk. The physical act of starting/stopping can actually be pretty fatiguing on your muscles.
Hope that helps, please reach out with any more questions, and good luck!
Michael Are you doing the long haul in January? Just did the skunk Ape revenge 60K. Of course doing both night ones also. Then the colt 45 which is my pre game to the long haul 2024.
I'm on the fence with Long Haul, I am most likely doing the "7 Trials" on December 31st in Jupiter which is 100+ miles over sand dunes in 3 days. No matter what though I will be at Long Haul either way, either running or crewing or cheering on.
Loving the videos! Is there any good way to donate or support the channel?
I'm happy you enjoy them! Honestly just subscribing, liking, and commenting is more than enough, it drives up engagement and helps my videos reach more viewers.
If you do want to donate, I'll be doing a fundraiser for Bigger Than the Trail this month and I'll be posting more info on that. I'm an ambassador for the charity, and all proceeds go directly to funding online counselling for those in need.
Thanks again for the view and kind comment!
no matter how things hurt, never say it, out loud or to yourself. bc Aw man that hurts a bit, turns into yeah this is bad, i need to stop. When shit hurts say ah its not that bad, normal for 60 miles. and from that comes the thought that its normal, and that you are doing well.
That was a big starting line ,was it not?
Yea, it took 3 charter busses to transport everyone. The start line included the 50 miler and the 100 milers so it was busy.
Great song at the beginning, what’s the name of the tune?
It's from uppbeat.io. It's the first song credited in the video description, you can find it here: uppbeat.io/track/matrika/eyes-wide-open?rt=uc-referral
I'm trying to find ya on Facebook but I can't seem to find ya.. unless I'm typing everything wrong 😆
Just search Michael Alberts, and maybe add "Melbourne Florida". I think that should be enough to find me. I'll see if I can add a link in my bio.
Great job but do you really think EVERYONE should go vegan? 😂😂😂😂😂
Only when a herd of cows are eyeballing you!
