Being a good land steward of one's property requires knowledge of the local ecosystem. As a native Oklahoma boy and the Arms Family homestead, I am VERY confident you are a good land steward. Keep up the good care of your land. 👏👍✨❤

Growing up on the ranch in central Florida, we had the Forest Service come out every couple of years to draw up a burn plan for our property. The regrowth after a controlled burn is astounding! Within weeks, things begin to green up and deer & turkeys multiply. We also have a native blueberry that only produces after a burn and I so looked forward to stuffing myself with those.
You're doing the absolute best thing for the land, Daniel!

Daniel, you may not realize that you are like a “lesson” to a lot of people when you explain what you’re doing and why you are doing it. You’re so right that depending on where you live, just the thought of starting a fire is scary. But without fire, seeds from some trees won’t even sprout. It sounds weird, but it’s true. You were so right that Smokey the Bear did a REAL good job of making a lot of people scared of fire. Thank you for doing this public service announcement to explain about your reasons for needing to burn sometimes.

Daniel my dad was a woodcutter in the winter months. In the spring and summer months he would mark dead & diseased trees. We would go into the woods in the winter and cut those trees down. We stacked the wood we would need first, then stacked more to sell. Dad sold a lot of wood each year. My siblings and I would ride along on delivery runs and help unload the wood. Also, my dad would burn the brush piles after each round of harvest. He said the ashes would feed the soil which would help new seedlings grow. Dad would replant 2 seedlings for every tree he cut down. Sadly, our family does not own the property any more. That 10 acres of woods is filled with sugar maple, black walnut, a dozen variety of pines, apple, oak, hickory and poplar. I know Dad is looking down at those woods smiling knowing he did his part in helping the land grow up healthy. 🥰

I can remember back in the old days, my parents and relatives was burning the fields after the harvest was done, and it was safe to get rid of those big tufts of tall grass or small bushes that had sprouted between the fields. Back in those days they all had goats to help cultivate the land. Goats will take care of a field in no time and remove all that they want to eat, leaving an open field without any bushes or such. My uncle had a big barn with many goats and they used to herd them onto my other family's farm to grase there for a while to help fertilise the land and clean up bushes. It is still interesting to see the shepherd dogs doing the fantastic job by themselves. The goats are let up on the hills in the morning, and the shepherd dog guides them down again when it is time for milking. Those dogs are very well trained and really good. They can run much faster than any goat and understands how to guide the herd down safely in a slow controlled pace, and eventually get them into the barn area, and even shutting the gate behind them. These days we see the lack of domesticated animals in the fields, with the result that the tall shrubs has become trees and the elk has moved in..

Wood ash is a valuable resource. You can use it in the garden, or when you do plant in those areas - it will help those plantings.
    Take care. Blessings ❤

When I was growing up we used to have burn barrels for the leaves and burn piles for the twigs branches all that I love it 😀 that is what homesteading is all about👍👍👏👏

I remember once when I was younger my family was driving through the countryside and we happened upon a field afire. There were people already there to fight the fire and trying their best to control it. My grandfather stopped and talked to some men who were discussing the situation. He came back to the car and told us that a lightning strike caused the fire which burned several acres of the poor farmer's crop. A controlled burn is a much better plan as firebreaks can be established and weeds which wear on fence lines are destroyed thus saving fencing and also the fence line can be checked for breaks that are not supposed to be there. The burn-off can also keep you as a good neighbor as your property is not a pain to the neighboring farmer's or landowners.

You are spot on and that is the reason why we have so many devastating bushfires.
