I'm so old that I came really close to spending my college fund on a "kit car" back in the early 1970s. Back then a lot of VW "Bugs" were sacrificed to provide the "guts" for such cars with Pintos, Mustang IIs, and even the occasional Vega bringing up the rear. Later, for the larger kit cars, it was the Ford Torino and LTD IIs. I seem to recall one company being sued out of existence by a certain Italian car company because the kit car company made the mistake of modeling their product very, very closely on the Italian company's best known, of the era, car. For a brief time, or so it seems to me all these years later, that there were a LOT of kit cars on the road but then they just sort of vanished. I can't help but wonder how many completed and semi completed kit cars are still out there in garages just waiting for someone to take them over the finish line and back on the road.

@@mustie1 I suspect this was a later Beach Buggy. Most of the first "Kit Cars" were based on the VW Beetle because of the floor pan and easy to reove "Beetle"" body. I seem to remember many years ago seeing something similar here in the U.K but was called a "Stingray Beach Buggy". I am guessing the 2 bolt per wheel was because the rims are 6 bolt pattern and the wheel hubs only 4 so it made it a rolling chassis with a view to getting 6 bolt hubs made?

Wow!.! Does that bring back memories. My best friend and room mate back in 1980 purchased this kit. We spent weeks selecting a 60's VW floor pan from a wrecker yard and marking out the cutting pattern to shorten it for the kit body. It never did get finished as far as I recall but a lot of love went into it. What I do remember was that the body was molded in one piece and wasn't trimmed very well. He was quite discouraged by the poor factory finish when he unpacked it.

Thanks for the step by step tinker. I've got a 1974 Super that's been parked for 3 years, fortunately under a carport, that I plan to tinker back into life once I get out the hospital and able to get spares and chemicals to tweak everything. Used to have a golden 3rd party VW parts store that had everything and Bosch/etc proper replacement parts. I drove it home on 3 cylinders but have yet to dig my money pit so it's still a good investment in having a throwback to the days when it was the only car my dad had. In other VW news, my brother has been restoring a Ghia, but I want to find his spare Ghia that's got a tree growing through it. The main complication being that the seller wants to keep the tree. I can understand..
One other anecdote, my first bug was a 67 shift-o-matic that we towed home 300 miles backwards, pausing only to remove the front brakes that were stuck in place. So yeah, challenge, reward.

For anything that has set up for a long time, why not just buy a new set of points and condenser and install it before finding out if the engine has spark? Saves time and frustration! I do this because the parts are very cheap, and I do not care about getting a specific part number. I just match them up with another part by eye, then record the part number in a journal specific to that vehicle that I record ALL services done, when, what parts bought, their part number, oil changes, filter changes (gas, oil, and air filter). I even do this for yard power machines such as rider mower, hand mower, chainsaw, hedge trimmer, and other equipment run by small engines including my homemade DC welder. This makes periodic maintenance a "snap" for everything that runs on gas or diesel! I have yard equipment that runs like new because of PM and careful use. I run the equipment out of fuel before setting it up before storage for the next season. Saves me time, and much money!

So nostalgic. I drove a 69 for a few years, and then restored a 62 and drove that for a few years. Nothing sounds like the little boxer engine. Of course, compared to my modern cars, what a piece of junk. The swing axle '62 was terrifying on corners at any speed. The heat was a joke. No AC of course. I still wish I had kept it.
