Great find! I'm a recovering VW addict and this has got me on the edge of jumping back in! As for a name of your new project, I think "Kombistock" might be appropriate due to the fact you found it in northern NY and its the 50th Anniversary year of Woodstock. Love all of your videos. You have a wonderful combination of mechanical aptitude, curiosity, and communication skills! Thanks for sharing.

Nice find. My Grandfather had a crusty back in the mid to late 60's. He always said he would give me a ride in that little compartment on the side, but never did. I wish I had it today.

I worked at a Subacute dealership as a body technician for several years, it was a flat rate shop where I was guaranteed the hours on the esrltimate no matter how long it took me to repair the damage. I was assigned a job on a Subaru. Wagon where the hood had flipped up and damaged the roof and broke the windshield. I decided to try a technique using heat and cold to pop the damage on the roof up and it worked awesome. I heated the roof with a heat gun and quenched it repeatedly with ice water. Suddenly, it popped back into position when I got the heat and cold just right and the repair required no filler after.just a small amount of hammer work was all that it required before paint. I was paid 8 hours for a repair that barely took an hour. My day in the sun!

My wife & I had thought about using Sportsmobile as a company to build us a Class-B RV (van-sized motor home) but decided against it. You might want to contact them and see if they have any of the original build plans for you bus to compare to what you currently have in your possession. If you do contact them, try connecting with the office in Texas as that is their home base. It looks like you've got a mighty nice van there as a starter project. Most everything is in very good shape, with the exception of rust here and there. Thanks for sharing.

My sole connection to a split window bus is the 1967 my parents bought when Dad was posted to Germany in 1978. I was at the tender age of 7, and I remember that bus fondly.

Mom had one of these for awhile when I was a kid then dad upgraded her to a flatface Ford Econoline van. A bright red one, as if we weren't obvious enough with all 8 of us kids hanging out the windows. Car seats? Yeah the car had seats. Seatbelts? For whacking your brother with. If you tried to parent now the way kids were raised then, well, any random day would earn you enough felony child abuse convictions to land you a life sentence.

In fact before I was banished to the back seat, I spent most of our travels standing between mom and dad so I could see. Don’t know how I survived. High chairs didn’t have seatbelts. Hot things didn’t have guards. And California didn’t know that everything known to man causes cancer.

My 1967 camper bus I got from Mr Mach1 last year; I been looking into the history, that tag looks like what I have Travel Equipment Corp. (TEC) From what I understand TEC was the folks who designed and came up with the POP-Up campers they did camper conversions for vw's and other vans in the 60's. Your windows also look like what I have & how they are installed . (TEC) did a SportMobile conversion kits they sent to Germany. VW would take a standard panel van . This was info got off the internet. Check your
(VIn. No. M codes) panel van .They painted then all one color "white" on your bus should show it was a panel van) from what i read they did the conversion @ vw plant and exported them. The company no-longer around but they were in Indiana On my back seat emboss in the seat is SportMoblie

Sportsmobile made all VW campers out of standard buses until the Government put a tariff on Imports. VW then started having Westfalia make their campers in Germany as there wasn't a tariff on campers. So the story goes from the Sportsmobile folks. Sportsmobile has a patent on the straight up pop up, which is why Westfalia went with the angled pop top

My 1st car ever was a 67' Beetle. I hated the car, I was a kid. All my friends were rocking the new Iroc, or 5.0's stangs etc, and theres me in a 1600 cc teal green bug. I totaled that car 50 feet from my house, along with a truck and monte carlo, oh, and a house. (old fart with fake leg T-boned me when he mistook the gas peddle for the brakes) Time went by and years later i bought a VW 77' westfallia pop top, school bus yellow. I LOVED THAT BUS. 2000cc engine, zero rust anywhere on it. paid $600 out the door for it. I sold it eventually and have regretted it ever since. Old VW's are a blast, i wish as a kid i'd have appreciated what i had.

Thanks for letting me ride along to the Canadian border. It's fun watching the bus-retrieval adventure from down here in Texas. You really need one of this big-wheel forklifts!

The body panels look like they might be from a 61-67 Ford Econoline?

Mustie, I am in awe of you, sir. Two reasons: First, I am amazed at your skills in getting apparently hopeless vehicles running (mechanical skill is something that doesn’t come naturally - I draw blood when I attempt to change my own oil). Second, as a long time VW fan, I ‘m impressed with your skill at finding all these wonderful toys. Keep recording, keep posting, and best wishes for continued success.

New addition to the collection, and yes, it's got to have a name..but I always let them pick one themselves as I'm around each vehicle, one day I just start calling it something. Not really that bad of shape, and comes with parts too!(both old and new, that cut off driveline is a find of its own)

I just love that bus. I hope you keep the colour. In Denmark this kind of VW has a nickname. Since i´ve been a little kidd it is called "Rye-bread" because it has the same shape as the ryebread that we eat a lot of in DK. When we say its is a Volkswagen rye-bread the danes knows exatly what type of Volkswagen it is, a VW-bus or Vw van. Nickname in Danish: "Folkevogns-rugbrød".

Sportsmobile converted the old VW buses for VW in North America before Westfalia ever started. There is a youtube video out with the owner of Sportsmobile about a month ago that explains the VW camper story. You truly have a historical find.

Fun, also always checking the wheel temp of the trailer when on the road (fuel stop, restaurant stop, pee stop.....). By the way I also feel around the trailer wheels to check the running service.

Mustie, I recognize that horde from Rt 104 outside Rochester, NY and then the BBQ place in Spencerport, NY. You drove thru my backyard, too bad the weather was so nasty for you, been a lousy spring so far, here in Rochester. Good luck with the new project.

I’d have to park it at a friend’s place too (waiting for parts) long enough to tell my wife, “Oh, I’ve had it for a long time. I told you about it because I even asked you to name it.” Great find, time and potential. Look forward to the series.

It started life as a non walkthrough panel before the Sportsmobile conversion. A dead giveaway is the rear upper body vents. Nice project.
