    Fun fact: The "Gome aver" screen in Zelda: Triforce of the Gods bootleg was taken from the intro to World of Illusion - Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck for the Sega Genesis.
    Seeing that random saber in a cup and curtain background unlocked a long buried memory. Enjoy the obscure fact!

    57:07 If I'm not mistaken, this is a classic quirk of Gen 1 AI. Sand-Attack is a Ground-type move, so Eevee will see that it's "super effective" against Pikachu despite not doing any damage and will simply just spam it until Pikachu's accuracy is minimized.
    Challenge runners frequently make use of this in actual Pokemon RBY against Elite 4 members by having a Pokemon weak to Psychic moves out against an opposing Pokemon that knows Agility or Rest, which both are Psychic-type moves, which the AI will spam over and over again giving the player ample time to sweep them with zero effort.
    Gen 1 was held together by duct tape and this bootleg evidently used the leftover tape from the roll lmao. Sadly there was none left to hold Scarlet/Violet together of course

    • @lordperson5762
      @lordperson5762 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Most AI in gen1 attack randomly
      Its gym leaders and rival battles that break the mold and always use super effective attacks just wanted to clear that up incase anyone got confused
      Also an AI can prioritise switching pokemon a trait only held by jugglers and agatha or using and item wich they will always use if either health is low enough or statused brock has 5 full heals for each of his pokemon and will prioritize using those over everything else if statused

    • @TheWrathAbove
      @TheWrathAbove ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lordperson5762 You're pretty close, but I'd like to note that there's a good few regular trainer classes that use "Good Ai" such as Sailors, Burglars, and Cooltrainers. Additionally it's worth noting that while in Red and Blue all of the Gym Leaders other then Brock use Good AI, In Yellow: Surge, Sabrina, and Blaine don't have Good AI for some reason.
      Finally it's worth pointing out that in the Elite 4 of all three games Agatha and Bruno don't have good AI for some reason

    Y'know, shaky quality aside, these are my favorite types of bootlegs. There's a lot of them that were made back then where they'd take an existing game, swap one of the sprites for a popular character and call it a day, but these devs actually put the effort in to bring wholly original versions of newer games to dated hardware without official dev kits and knowledge, probably allowing tons of kids who wouldn't have been able to play LTTP, Mario World, Pokemon, etc. otherwise to experience them in some form.

  • @JC21

      I remember as a kid after seeing Pokemon Stadium and Colosseum I always wondered why they didn't just make Pokemon games for console. Like I know now it's because you could only do trading and stuff on handheld, but in my head since I never had anyone to play with they were strictly singleplayer games, lol

    • @warbossgegguz679
      @warbossgegguz679 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      You mean a game series on 8 bit handhelds with 4 buttons and a D-pad would translate well to an 8 bit console with 4 buttons and a D-pad?
      Preposterous!

    • @neek01
      @neek01 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@ExaltedUriel You could trade Pokémon from Colosseum and XD to any of the GBA games through a GB/GBA player though. You just had to finish the story on the GC games first to be able to. There’s effectively nothing that stopped them from implementing a system that would read save data from a second/a friends Game cube memory card to trade Pokémon like that.

    The fact that improvement hacks are available for all these that significantly improve how they play (especially Super Mario World NES) is really cool. They did a similar thing with Somari where they fixed up the physics some, turned it back into Sonic, and now you have a surprisingly decent Sonic 1 NES port. All of these are pretty OK for bootleg games, but the fan hacks make them way more playable. There was also "Donkey Kong Country 4" on NES which is basically a sorta-DKC1 to NES port by I think the same guys as one of these games.
    Also, the Super Mario World NES game shown in the video is, as said, the "Volume 1" version. It's a bit hard to get your hands on the true full version, but it has a level select as soon as you press to enter the game, since the game had no save feature and it's pretty reasonably long. Super Mario World on NES is especially interesting since it was once said by Nintendo staff that Yoshi wasn't possible on NES, but the bootleggers proved them wrong.

    • @flametitan100
      @flametitan100 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably my favourite of these hacks to bootlegs was Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Though to be fair, most of that's from the original bootleg itself being a work of art converting FF7 into an NES game.

    • @alfo2804
      @alfo2804 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Everyone always drags up that statement from the Mario team saying that Yoshi couldn't be done on the NES, and nobody seems to understand what they meant.
      They said that _they_ couldn't figure it out, but people take that to mean that they claimed it was objectively impossible to achieve.
      If anything, Yoshi was probably scrapped because they just didn't have the concept down yet. Most things that get scrapped from games are done so for design reasons.

    Vinny, I have been a fan for almost 10 years. I found your videos while I was in highschool, and now I am married and have two kids. I remember very fondly the first video I saw, which is the Sesame Street corruptions, and your hilarious content has kept me going through some very hard times (particularly The Fantastic Game and the egglike genre). I reference jokes from Vinesauce constantly and I even introduced my wife to your channel, which we now watch together at dinner time with the kids. To say you have been a big influence in my life would be an understatement. That's why it saddened me so much when I saw you talk bad about Lester the Unlikely. I almost could not believe it at first, so I replayed the part over and over, and my anger and disappointment grew each time. I am so distraught right now, but there are some lines that cannot be crossed. You are dead to me.

    From what little I know about the Yellow bootleg, it's actually pretty cool for a bootleg. I mean, it even has post-game content with some of the Gen 3 legendary Pokémon (I know for a fact Latias/Latios are there). Considering many bootleg games don't even go to the end, that's a lot of effort that they didn't need to put in. I also really like how they made completely different maps for the region, gives it its own identity.
    Honestly, I'd unironically play it (I already have the fan-translated ROM). I'd also wanna attempt remaking the bootleg myself, but idk if I'll bother or not since, well, the bootleg exists and can be played on more things than anything made in RPG Maker can. Lol.

    Waixing computer science and co. are a really impressive team of bootleggers for its time. i always wonder if the people who worked on these bootlegs got work in the industry later on in life. despite the mediocre quality of most of their games i think it was a team of genuinely talented people.

    The bouncing intro text for Zelda got me good. "THAT SEAL SHOULD HAVE REMAINDED"
    The theme from Hyrule Castle was blowing my mind because I actually listened to Dvorak's New World Symphony earlier this month. It's very common for bootlegs to just employ midis of random classical music. The game seemed like it didn't tie any particular track to any screen and would instead randomize between the tracks whenever a new screen calls for it.

    24:10 I wish people would stop thinking Zelda games are RPGs. The basic requirement of an RPG is character stats (attack, defense, agility, etc.) with the ability to level up the characters. Zelda games don't have that aside from obtaining items that make Link more powerful or durable, but that doesn't count. There needs to be an actual stats screen with numbers.
