PETE BEST - WAS HE KICKED OUT OF THE BEATLES?

- Pete Best , the original drummer of the Beatles was fired in 1962 and replaced with Ringo. How did it happen?
At RockTalkTV you can hear the untold stories about your favorite music and entertainment icons.
Pete always proved himself to be a classy guy.
But, sadly, not a classy drummer.
@ - Paul said that Ringo was an excellent drummer and that they definitely wanted him.
Even when Ringo quit around 1968 (technically the first to officially leave) the other 3 rallied together to get him back. He returned to flowers on his drum kit from them.
The harsh reality check is that Ringo was simply and infinitely more skilled on drums than Pete Best, and among if not the best (no pun intended) drummers for their style in Liverpool.
Ringo wasn't John Bonham or Neal Peart, but the Beatles never were Led Zeppelin or Rush either.

George Martin (+ GH, Ringo & PM) on PB - th-cam.com/video/h3AY1CVUgJw/w-d-xo.html
@ - I think that we're essentially saying the same thing.
My point is that, unfortunately, PB just wasn't strong enough a drummer. Average to below average - th-cam.com/video/ekd4JXQ2V5I/w-d-xo.html
Ringo is clearly stronger, better meter, more technically precise.
When I say that Ringo isn't Bonham or Peart, that's just pointing out that he didn't delve into to those levels. Beatles' music wouldn't work with that type of drumming.
The problem with Pete is that his mom, Mona Best called The Beatles, Petes band. She tried to run the band.
Pete didnt change his hircut like he was supposed to.
If Pete had stayed in the band, I wonder if The Beatles had existed until 69. Petes mom Mona Best and Brian Epstein, not a good mix I think.
@@Peteripattaya - I'm thinking that there were a lot of factors, but his drumming ability in the end was the final deciding element.
After all, they did stay with Pete even after they signed their Deal with Parlophone/EMI.
So glad to hear Pete eventually got rich. Too bad he and the lads never became friends again later - but I guess it would be rather awkward.
John, Paul, George, .....and Pete..... Just doesn't have the same Ringo to it.
Lol thats funny
I see what you did there
Present day it doesn't but in Liverpool 1962, IT DID.
That's what I say! It doesn't sound right and people won't know who are you talking about. But since Ringo became the new Fourth Beatle, it sounds more better and people would know who you're talking about: John, Paul, George, and Ringo.
His best story was the one he told on WHAT'S MY LINE. He said he worked with a production company which released an album of recordings where he played with the Beatles. He said the title of the album was BEST OF THE BEATLES. He then laughed and said the production company immediately got sued. What a great story. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy.
No matter why he was let go, I am celebrating that Pete became a millionaire when "Anthology" was released. I am a Beatle fan from way back, but only after Ringo was the drummer. That story about Pete - that we all finally heard - was so headshaking sad though. He must have really grieved being tossed off the Beatles "launch pad" (as someone called it) - at the 11th hour - for decades! That's would have been a really hard pill to swallow, with the way the Beatles "reigned" all over the world, for so long. :( Hooray.. so glad he received a "small fortune" 30+ years later. Better late than...
There are things about Pete Best that he deserved to be kicked out of the Beatles.
@@tallterrilaw8646 i know what u mean. 1st Pete left The Beatles without a drummer many a night in Germany . So that is how The Beatles asked Ringo to stand in. They realized Ringo was a better drummer as well he had the chemistry to match the others. Pete was not a good match. Even George Martin did NOT like Pete as a drummer. With his experience in the music industry I think his opinion is worth something.
Yes and in the 60 Years since so many Folks were let go or quit Groups and they went on to be Superstars. Backstreet Boys, Beach Boys, Black Eyed Peas, Dixie Chicks, Duran Duran, Go-Go's, Miracles, New Kids On The Block, N'Sync, , Spice Girls, Supremes, Temptations, TLC & Wilson Phillips. Eldridge "Al" Bryant never got over being fired from The Temptations and around 1970 he died of Liver Disease. He was a Full Fledged Alcoholic and David Ruffin & Paul Williams were also both Addicts. Some spend so many years feeling sorry for themselves, or blaming others. I don't think Crystal would have put up with Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and what she did, also she was too smart a Lady to have Perri Reid aka "Pebbles" screw them over financially.
Pete Best was fired because his drumming, while adequate, wasn't good enough for a major-label recording contract. George Martin himself said he told John, Paul, and George they would need to find a better drummer to record the album. It may well have been that Pete's looks added to it; maybe they wanted to get rid of him anyway but didn't have an excuse until then. But this idea that Pete was let go solely because of his looks is ridiculous. The Beatles wouldn't be the Beatles as we know them if they hadn't dropped Pete and brought in Ringo.
Undeterred, You wrote, "George Martin himself said he told John, Paul, and George they would need to find a better drummer to record the album." This is untrue. George Martin simply said he wanted to use a session drummer for the first recording session. In fact, he specifically told Brian that he did not want to interfere with the Beatle line-up. It was John, Paul and George that wanted Pete out and RIngo in. They made the correct choice, but it was THEIR choice...no one else's.
@@jasona9 how do you know they made the correct choice? Are you telling me without Ringo on drums, the talents of all the others wouldn't have been strong enough? That you truly believe the Lennon/McCarthey songbook would have been ignored by the world because Ringo wasn't playing the drums? Gimme a break 😂
@@robhollywood647,How do I know the Beatles made the correct choice? Ringo may not have been the ONLY drummer from Liverpool that could have recorded 17 #1 singles with the Beatles, but he was the perfect drummer for that group. Bands as GREAT as the Beatles do NOT do their best work when there is internal dissent in the band. By Pete's own admission he never had a strong friendship with either George or Paul. I do not believe Pete was fired just because of his drumming. He was also let go due to personality conflicts. John, Paul, George and Ringo have said they were as close as brothers.
@@jasona9 believe the fairy stories...
Truth is they argued a lot...
Even John & Paul fell out for years...
If you think Paul & Ringo are now hanging out together on a regular basis you are deluded.
The situation is much more complex than your fantasy, and certianly more so than the "official" story...
Johnny Hutchinson of the big 3 was asked to replace Pete. He didn't like Lennon or McCartney either. He was also a good friend of Pete Best. He turned them down right away.
Ringo was in a band that was past it's peak. He joint the Beatles because he was offered more money.
This ain't no fairy story. It's showbiz!
WRONG I saw a documentary in which George Martin said he always thought that he may have been the catalyst of Pete Best sacking but he said only for the purpose of recording records he wanted a more timed sound so he got in a session drummer.(Andy White ) George Martin said Pete Best drumming on stage would not matter because screaming girls would not notice imperfections. George Martin was very specific he said he never advised the boys or brian to sack best.
Another fact, Martin had disapproved of Best's drumming and was now also unhappy with newcomer Starr's drumming again using Andy White to step in on. Love Me Do....Please Please Me... P.S I Love You
during this time Ringo Star was feeling insecure and wondered whether the boys where going to do a Pete Best on him also but as we all know he never needed to worry.
The other Beatles were in fear of losing their studio contract because of Pete.
Pete Best wasn't good on the Love me do outtake but otherwise on many occasions with the Beatles was an innovative creative drummer.
Pete Best just screwed up at the worst time and it's tragic.
This is interesting. The only interview I know where Pete Best presents another version, especially interesting, since it's an early interview. He says, he wanted to start a group of his own...!?
People have been wondering and arguing about this for 54 years. I guess it always will be a fun topic. The drumming one is difficult to solve or confirm. Neither were versatile virtuosos at the time. The answer really lies in the middle of it all. They just didn't like him. Yes they went through a lot with him and he's a good decent guy. But the chemistry just wasn't there. They weren't worried about losing their contract with EMI. George Martin's request was a common thing in those days. It was just an excuse bandwagon to jump on because they didn't like him. Ringo fit like a glove, he was funny sarcastic, loved to party and be a part of their scene. And yes, Ringo did become a very fine drummer. But that's not what got him into the Beatles. He wasn't even their first choice. Johnny Hutch of The Big 3 was.
yes you are so right ''' i do like Ringo he is so cool '' funny as well ''
Because the Big Three was already under contract with Epstein. Johnny was vocal about his dislike of the Beatles. Ringo was _their_ first choice. Epstein asked Johnny on his own accord.
Harvey..... you are right........as for Hutch...... wogew.blogspot.com/2019/04/hutch-is-dead.html
@Joseph Preston lol. Why do people still believe that spin
If they were going to ditch a drummer for another who can play better simple 4/4 time signatures, Ringo was 1 of thousands in the qualification pool. Let's face it ,Beatles music will never be notorious for progressive or spectacular rythm, it was all about melody and looking the part as a bowl cut douche on stage, and Pete got all p(_)ssy for not looking like one of them.......hence he was kicked out.
LONG LIVE PETE! He deserves a great life!
Pete was kicked out because Ringo was the guy.
I believe there were many reasons that added up to his eventual sacking, but the least of them was his drumming. Even Paul eventually admitted that Pete was a good drummer. I think it was a combination of things. Personality conflict, Jealousy (he was becoming disproportionately more popular than the founding members), George Martin's insistence on using a session drummer, AND...drum roll (no pun..)...Mona Best. The pregnancy thing with Neil must have been a big headache for Brian Epstein, who was extremely concerned with the band's image. He even made sure that certain photographs (from their wild Hamburg days) were kept from the public. Ringo may have been a better drummer, but certainly not by a big enough margin to dump Pete Best. The drummer who was with them all the way to the launch pad. The guy deserves respect, and should be fully acknowledged as a Beatle. He played an integral part in the band's history. Ringo was a great Beatle for sure!...but one thing's also for sure,...he is about the luckiest guy in the history of rock & roll.
+James Sullivan Well said. Yeah Ringo is great, but Pete is also great! I met the guy and it was as great as any superstar I have met. Heck, he was a Beatle and no matter what no one can take that away from him!
Listen the Decca recording and say he was good. NOT at all. It is painful to listen to be honest. He was a main reason Beatles was rejected by Decca, because band sounded sloppy due his loose drumming.
I 've also seen Pete Best play. He was ok but didn't show 'star' quality in my opinion. He seemed somewhat shy.
Gotta love these conspiracy theorists! He was sacked because he wasn't a great drummer and didn't fit in. The other three wanted Ringo, particularly George. It's all in Mark Lewisohn's book, The Beatles Tune In.
Mark Lewisohn? Well then you should do more research because this is also in Mark Lewisohn's book The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions: (Paul McCartney) told Mark Lewisohn, similarly, that when George Martin suggested "changing their drummer" the Beatles responded: "Well, we're quite happy with him, he works great in the clubs," but also that "Pete had never quite been like the rest of us. We were the wacky trio and Pete was perhaps a little more sensible; he was slightly different from us, he wasn't quite as artsy as we were.
Get your facts straight and stop making up theories of your own.
George Martin didn't think Best' drumming "sucked" (if he did why would he have said they could keep him on as a live drummer?). He simply wanted a session drummer to play on the record. Heck, he didn't even like Ringo's drumming when he started with the band!
Martin wanted to keep him in the band for image reason's, But that isn't a good enough reason, Today it might be but they had enough image as it was and they were all talented.
most of the pete best studio recordings had over dubbing added later by session drummer's.
Pete had his chance in several other groups plus a huge claim to fame, if he had so many fans or people who thought he was great, then how come none of them bought any of his later recordings?
He only sells now because of nostalgia, best did very well out of it considering
He could not keep the time, that`s all.
You can't have a drummer in the studio who speeds up. It makes it completely impossible to record. You can get away with that live, but not on a recording.
Paul London that’s not true. Martin had never heard Ringo play before the Love Me Do sessions and “wasn’t going to waste studio time on an unproven drummer.” He went with Andy White, a known commodity. Ringo played the B side, “PS I Love You.”
Ignatz Mouse no click tracks in 1962 either.
Ringo was the better "Beatle"-J.L.
Here's what the great Searchers' drummer, Chris Curtis, who was in Hamburg alongside the Beatles, had to say about Best in an interview with Spencer Leigh:
SL: What about Pete Best?
CC: He was a genius. You could put that man on a drumkit and ask him to play for 19 hours and he’d put his head down and do it. He’d drum like a dream with real style and stamina all night long and that really was the Beatles’ sound - forget the guitars and forget the faces - you couldn’t avoid that insistent whack, whack, whack!
SL: Were you surprised that the Beatles sacked Pete Best?
CC: I was amazed. When Pete left, I even thought of turning into a guitarist and getting him to drum in our band. The Beatles didn’t hate Pete Best but they didn’t want a star on the drums. Ringo was a good drummer but he was more ordinary. At that Decca audition, I think they also realised that Pete had so much power that no-one would know how to record him. That’s why so many Merseyside discs are icky, all thin and weedy....
Would that be the same Chris Curtis with the drug addictions and mental health issues? I wouldn't attach too much credence to his opinions. I've seen Best play live and i felt deeply embarrassed for him. Who on earth takes two back up drummers to a gig with them?
@@wangdangdoodie, Gerry and Fred Marsden from Gerry and the Pacemakers went on record with Spencer Leigh to say positive things about Pete Best and his drumming. Tony Crane from the Mersey Beats as well. These were the Beatles contemporaries during the Hamburg/Liverpool period. Are you going to attack their credibility, character, or mental health too?
Please don't try to do a British accent lol.
Reading somewhere The Beatles gave him a million quid when he was released.
He got 7 million in the 90s when the beatles anthology was released
Wrong, The Beatles didn't give him a penny when he was released. Just a swift kick out the door. It wasn't 'til the '90s that Pete got royalties off his Beatles work--estimated to be over $10M.
They didn't like him because he was getting too much attention from the press- even a photo with Pete Best and the rest. He was so popular they had to move the drums to the front. He got along fine - even sharing the same birds in bed.
You guys should listen to Tod, he knows the score.
he got booted out cause he couldn't cut it, and they wanted a drummer who was a step up.
same as chad channing being replaced by dave grohl. it's as simple as that.
Fuck you. Dave Grohl sucks ass.
MontagTheMagician dave grohl is a bit of a dick, but, you can't deny he's a great drummer.
True. I still love Dave Grohl.
lancashire bomber in what world is he a dick? I always thought he was a nice fellow, but I guess I might not know all that much about him.
He couldn't cut simple time signatures with a group of pale soyboys from Liverpool , lmao. Damn your stupid, listen to something other than beatles albums. You could sit down and play drums on any beatles track after 3 drum lessons, then ask yourself why dingo star was chosen.
I think ringo is better than pete
You think? Don’t you know?
My dad said that Pete’s drumming was good but it was just too quiet
No ! Pete is better...
God Bless Sir Paul McCartney For Giving Pete Best What Was Due Him.
God Bless.
I don't know if Paul had any say in it.
Pete Best would have had to have been paid royalties once the tracks on which he played were released to the public and sold.
I remember this episode so well! Times flies.
Pete Best was actually a pretty good, Drummer so I don't think he was kicked out for that, It's disgusting how the beatles treated him, Pete deserves a lot of respect he was a great drummer and truly is the 5th beatle.
"Pete Best was actually a pretty good, Drummer"
Well George Martin thought the opposite and away he went.
Eh his drumming was kinda sucky and boring, ringo spiced it up more
@@mannofscience I agree. Some say "you haven't heard the Beatles until you've heard them with Pete Best"..... hogwash. We have heard them with Pete, and his drumming is nothing to write home about. His "Atom Beat" was good for the very early days, but clearly Ringo was the superior drummer and THE ONE to complete the Fab Four. As for why Pete was given the boot, that has become pretty clear over the years. The final straw was EMI's refusal to use him for recordings, but his departure had been brewing for quite a while among the other 3 (especially George). The fact of the matter is that Pete's sullen personality simply never clicked with the more outgoing and wise cracking Threetles and they had been thinking of replacing him for a long time (from the day they recruited him, according to John Lennon who made some very unkind comments toward Pete over the years). Ringo had sat in with the group a number of times and everyone in the group agreed that they were a better band when that happened. Much has been make of the theory that the others were jealous of how much attention Pete was getting from the girls, and there surely was something to that, but I don't think that was in any way a main reason. The fact of the matter is that once they got a recording contract, they KNEW that they were going places and they pulled the string on Pete while they still had a chance.
The WAY they did the dirty deed was indeed chickenshit, but that is another story.
Here's a small but telling signal that Pete was never fully in tight with the others..... check out early Hamburg pix..... is Pete on the rooftop? No. When they took to the streets in their silly pink hats, did Pete join in and wear one? No.
@@kentfletcher7532 - I heard Pete about 10 years ago with his own band and have to say I didn't think he was that good and he also had another drummer playing with him to boost the sound. That said, he was very nice and chatted with individuals in the audience but seemed a bit shy. He gave me an autograph (I also have one of the other four that I framed and that was sent to me by Freda Kelly in 1964 but don't know if they actually signed it or if someone did it for them as often happens. There was an ink smudge so I think it's genuine. The signatures look like others I've seen). I think it was partly his lack of skill and partly his reticent personality. Ringo was versatile and his personality hit the right spot. I don't think it was really jealousy. Hell, Paul is no slouch and they didn't kick him out did they? They were a bit cowardly in letting him go as they did but I also don't think it was entirely their decision but that of the record company and Epstein. Who knows if they would have hit the big time if he stayed? Ringo was very popular.
@@susieq9801 ... I agree. The Fab 3 had been dissatisfied with Pete for a while and when George Martin said that he wouldn't use Pete on recordings, that was just the last straw. The way they did it was terrible, but I think history has shown that it was the right decision.
Very cool that you have a Beatle autograph. If it was sent to you by Freda Kelly, I would say it's almost surely authentic.
It's pretty obvious that he wasn't that good. Whether Ringo was that much better at first is debatable. What is obvious is that Pete did not click well with the other Beatles and that Ringo had the same cheeky sense of humor as the others. After watching countless videos and reading countless posts, these are the comments I come across over and over. I don't buy the view that the others were jealous of his charm or good looks. John & Paul were much more charming, personality wise, than Pete was.
Pete has been very fortunate to have ever been associated with the Beatles. He is now well known, successful as a musician in his later years and quite rich. He would have none of this had he never met the Beatles. He has nothing to be bitter about. I wish I had been as lucky as he was.
too in love with his hair, the downfall of many a man
Pete was a late arrival to The Beatles and wasn't a member of the band for long. The core of The Beatles was always John, paul and George.
@Samí Warrior Two years is a long time. And not only that, but the two years Pete was there, were the most formative years the band had to that date.
@FUCK JOE BIDEN KILL ALL LIBERALS Biden is so much better than corrupt Trump .
not only did they kick him out of the band but they also tried to ruin his reputation. shows you what kind of guys John and Paul really are.
Pete seems like a really nice guy and his drumming is better with age but he cannot hold a candle to Ringo. Glad he got some money out of Anthology, though.
If he can play drums....he could of landed a drum part on any band right?(or did he?)
Oh yeah? That's right. Oh... except the biggest band in the world don't want you to succeed. He got labelled as a Beatles reject. He was used and disguarded. I bet you'd be singing a different tune if someone did that to you.
Not the Beatles
@@robhollywood647 That's how it works with bands. You have to have chemistry with each other. The group didn't seem to have that with Best.
Tama Kennedy Lennon was a sarcastic sob... careful how you read what he said. Pretty clear Pete didn't mix well with the other three. Doesn't make him a bum.
Ummm, Pete Best formed his own band and was signed by Decca. So he obviously improved a year after being sacked, just as Ringo improved a year after being hired, as he was finally allowed to be The Beatles drummer in-studio. (That's right, George Martin called Ringo's drumming rubbish and hired a pro session drummer, Alan White, to record, "Love Me Do".
George Said everything: Ringo was the true member of the band.
Masterpiece
Pete best was a good touring drummer but he was a beginner when they got him for their germany gigs and best was on a slower learning curve while the other 3 were on the fast track creatively. According to Lewiston's tuned in bio Best was restricted or left out of most of the recording attempts they made. Decca told them best was not good enough and G Martin refused to use him in recordings. The beatles needed some one for recording and for touring, didn't want to rely on a session drummer as they were a band, and they felt ringo was who they needed and he was a better fit personality-wise. So Best was out. They handled it bad making their manager tell him.
I remember seeing him standing on his own in a bar in Worcester in the UK..my mate nudged me and said "do you know who that is?" I said "absolutely"...he cut a lonely figure and just seemed to want to go unnoticed
The early Decca recordings show that PB's drumming was limited in range, and inconsistent in tempo. Plus he was regularly late, or a no-show for gigs. That's when they had Ringo join in, and according to them (George H. in particular) they realized they were a much better band with Ringo. A seasoned session drummer who was tight, on the mark, and was much more adept at different styles. PB was not a bad drummer, just not good enough for the big time.
Interesting video about Pete Best:
th-cam.com/video/7GOCiuGzQm8/w-d-xo.html
Pete didn’t do anything wrong. In fact he had a large part in helping the Beatles achieve their popularity in the early days. Pete’s own mother helped finance and facility the band when they had no one else to help. Although Pete may have never had a future with the group, they should have at least had enough respect for him to explain themselves man to man.
That was a strange ending.. it sounded like it was setting up for a part 2 🤔
The picture is at 3:23
Decca Records did NOT send the letter shown here. They passed on the Beatles in favor of Brian Poole & The Tremeloes- a guitar group. Also, guitar groups had not been "in" in England prior to 1962.
Pete was a terrible drummer. He was way off beat.Ringo knew how to play drums and kept in good timing.
That’s not true. He was good but he just never got any better.
@@dalapathy I have Beatles CD's with Pete Best. Off beat drummer indeed. But I'd rather listen to Pete Best play drums then listen to Yoko Ono sing.

Pete was a best drummer cuz he was kicked out of the band because on John lennon's interview his drumming was too loud
Didn't see it in this vid,but I've heard several sources say that Ringo subbed for Pete one night sometime during the first half of 1962,and the gig was magical. Ringo didn't volunteer to leave Rory Storm & The Hurricanes, and J,P,and G didn't ask him, partly because the Rory Storm gig was(at the time) a better one.But with a recording contract on offer, that changed. The only positive thing I can say is that Pete had nothing whatever to do with the grotesque events of the band's later years, and at least he got some good money from "Anthology".As well he should have!
I live near Liverpool, people here told me he was sacked because he didn’t want to change his haircut to that Beatles mop top image that Epstein wanted.
The mystery has been solved. Read the 2013 biography of the beatles by Llewisohn and learn how it all went down! to start best was let go, he didn't 'leave' the beatles. Plenty more in the book which is so good to read as it is well researched and well written.
Or better yet, read the first really honest book about the Beatles by Hunter Davies. No bars withheld.
Long story short...he wasn't a particularly versatile or good of a drummer at the time. His timekeeping is all over the place on The Beatles Love Me Do, and he sometimes added an extra beat to his drum fills, messing up the beat.
Ringo had cut his teeth at Butlins, as a Redcoat. In addition to playing with Rory Storm, Ringo had to be a little of an expert at everything...organising and running resort events, keeping bored or angry holidaymakers entertained, probably a bit of performing himself.
That's in addition to playing drums for the inevitable old time dances, where he'd have to be in strict-time for the Cha Cha, Waltz, Quickstep and so on. He'd modify these beats later on when he was in the Beatles; listen to And I Love Her for the subtle use of the Cha Cha beat on a packing case, FOR GOODNESS SAKE! It's perfect!
he was given the boot because he was a very marginal musician, for one. but also, because he didn't want to hang with the group socially.
He was good pal but a bad drummer.

Pete Best's story is a slice of real life. Interesting how he survived to enjoy being a millionaire and Lennon and Harrison are dead enjoying nothing. McCartney is presumed dead by some and Starkey is still a great talent enjoying his life. Seems like the 2 drummers in the Beatles are winners. McCartney, although presumed dead by some, continues as the greatest living song smith in history. If Billy Shears is the McCartney double then he will be known as the greatest song smith in history and the best actor to have ever lived. The Beatles, the best musical franchise in history and the most intriguing one as well. Hats off to the Tavistock Inststute for expanding the Anglo American culture to every part of this planet. Anglo America is truly the King Of The North. It Is Only A Northern Song could not illustrate this enigma and phenomenon more clearly. Thank you for the insight. "G.T.W.O.M.S"!
What exactly did Tavistock do for the Beatles?
Just what is "G.T.W.O.M.S"!?
Yes, people this stupid do exist.
Think about it like this. When they quit touring in 1966, both Lennon and McCartney are on record saying it was because they sucked live. Lennon said they had progressed as far as they could as actual musicians. Ringo admitted that in some live performances he "played like shit." Good drummers don't play like shit. That's not many years performing live. By '69 they were done. Despite the 'Beatlemania', it wouldn't seem to matter who the hell was on drums. Lennon said, "We were an excuse for the people to go mad then blamed it on us." They were simply in the right place at the right time and unique. Excellent song writers for sure but talented musicians? Not particularly. No point in arguing with me about it when they said it themselves.
What a colossally stupid statement. What the band was talking about was how sloppy their live shows had become. They were sick of live performing and just going through the motions at the end. But the band's musicianship only grew through the years, including Ringo's. Have you ever heard their late period albums? It seems not. And you don't prove any points by quoting a random John Lennon quote. JFC
Great channel, lads!
PB was sacked because he was simply a mediocre drummer. Listen Decca recordings. Its pretty horrible, because PB could not keep the time and his drumming was boring anyway. He was kept in the band, because he was a pal of John, he had his own money and he had plenty of business contacts, because his mother was a succesful club owner. He wasn`t the first drummer of Beatles, more like third or fourth but his mother made a huge fooray about his sacking in the British media, that`s why it is so legendary.
The whole Decca audition was awful. Drumming wasn't the only problem.
Yep, to be honest, only Paul sounded and performed good, others were sloppy like hell. I wonder why they didn`t offer Paul a solo deal.
He was also foul tempered, according to many accounts.
that doesnt make any sense. Ringo was no all star drummer either. when they first replaced Pete with Ringo, there was protest amongst fans even before the media storm.
Ringo was well known succesful drummer in Liverpool already, financially much more succesful than Beatles were then. He tooks quite a risk joining a band, which was good but known more like some semirpros.
What I have read is that they asked Jonny Hutch to replace Pete before they asked Ringo to join. Anyone, is that true?
yes its true but johhny was a friend of petes and didnt like how the beatles did the dirty on pete by sacking him the big three was a moderately succesful band in the early sixties also a great live band possibly the best trio till cream and jimi hendrix experiance came along i know saw them once
@@12presspart Johnny "Hutch" Hutchinson once said, "Pete Best couldn’t play the drums - I could play the drums better than Pete Best with a stick stuck up my a**e. Honest."
www.thesun.co.uk/archives/news/221963/i-turned-down-the-beatles-and-i-have-no-regrets/
Johnny and Pete were friends? With a friend like that, who needs an enemy....
In a book I read it said this but also that they were jealous because Pete was getting all the attention even though he didn't have the talent the rest had. Apparently after a few gigs at the cavern Pete was playing in front of the band instead of the back of the group and it got john, Paul and George annoyed
Best was perhaps a bit more popular. So was Ringo after joining. Maybe drummers have a special edge in popularity??? A few weeks later Ringo was beloved as the beatles drummer and best was pretty much forgotton by his apparently fickle fans.
@@dennylane4292 That's malarkey! There were large protests with fans screaming, "PETE FOREVER, RINGO NEVER!!!". A fan even head-butted George Harrison, leaving him with a big shiner, for his part in the sacking of Pete.
Enough about these tawdry allegations of Pete Best’s drumming. Of COURSE there were better drummers. George Harrison was a rather ordinary unimpressive lead guitarist. John could strum a few chords and that was about it.
The KEY POINT TO RECOGNISE is that Beatlemania was occurring in Liverpool BEFORE the release of their first album because their sound and persona was so remarkably popular. And the drummer in that group of great sound and persona was ... Pete Best!!!!
If Pete Best’s drumming was good enough as a contributory part of the ‘Beatles sound’ then ... it was good enough. It was part of The Beatles sound that so many adored.
Dismissing him at that point on their journey was astonishingly cruel. I’ve read elsewhere that after dismissing Best, Brian Epstein was reduced to tears knowing of what they were about to deprive Best.
I wonder if any of the other Beatles imagined what it would be like if it happened to them?
I say all this as a HUGE Beatles fan. John, Paul and George treated Best astonishingly shabbily and they never received the due condemnation they deserved for the manner in which they treated Pete Best. They didn’t even speak to him - how dishonorable, cowardly and underhanded can one be?
What a bizarre statement! "Brian Epstein was reduced to tears knowing of what they were about to deprive Best" How on Earth could anyone have predicted what the Beatles would go on to achieve? Even in the months immediately following his dismissal? Was Epstein (or anyone else involved) in possession of a magic crystal ball? Or perhaps a set of Tarot cards? He wasn't treated shabbily at all. He was simply an employee who was not up to the job.
Agree. Would just add that they had the right to bounce him for someone nonthreatening, but not to leave him penniless since he made them popular as well.
his drumming was bad, really bad.
How demoralizing. But what a sport.
The Beatles are the best RocknRoll band that have ever existed. Thats it!
If you as a drummer are asked to join the band, then it must mean that you are the best drummer in the world.
John Bonham hehe. 😂
I remember Stones 1982. J Geils Band played before Stones and there was a lot of work with JGBs drumkit and it took two hours to fix it.
When Stones came along, Charlie Watts drumkit took 10 minutes to put up.
It's kinda really sad about Pete Best. Being with John, Paul and George for two years then just getting practically thrown out without a real reason. For the music they played in the caverns around Germany and London he was not a bad drummer. His timing and effort to keeping the others in sync was honest. Every song I ever heard with Pete sounded pretty good. His beat appeared to be spot on. He wasn't a Buddy Rich but he wasn't an amateur either. Hard to believe John Lennon thought he was a lousy drummer because that's not true.
He was thrown out and it was for a good reason. Actually a few of them. Do your homework and figure it out. It isn't that complicated.
This music clip is hardly indicative of Pete Best's drumming! Listen to some of the Hamburg tapes (Anthology) they will show you that Mr. Best was a very good live drummer who helped whip the German audiences into a frenzy! PETE BEST WAS A GOOD DRUMMER! However, there is a big difference in live and studio. Ringo turned out to be a VERY INNOVATIVE drummer for the time.. I truly do not believe that jealousy over looks had ANYTHING to do with it. Remember, before Stu Suttclife left, he was the good looking one.. The Beatles made the correct decision... But, I gotta tell you, Pete Best is a hell of a guy, and I would love to meet him, far more than the two remaining Beatles.... BTW Pete, I am a Songwriter who writes good Country and Western songs.. I bet we could have at least one hit of our own! Whatta ya say PETE? snicker snicker
He's a very nice looking guy.
Clarence their Saxophone player was also kicked out.
ironically ended up working in my local job centre.
pete best era muy lindo mi amor
What ever the reason for best dismissal I think most people would agree, it was the manner of his sacking that was distasteful even john lennon said they were cowards. In my opinion the 3 boys should have sat pete down and told him the reason why he was being sacked, after all he was with them for 2 years and he deserved that respect. Its nice to know after many decades pete reportedly recieved £5,000,000 royalties from the beatles anthology album. I feel he deserved every penny for all the heartache over the years of missing out on super stardom.
maybe a cocktail of: not the best drummer ever (he's good, but not superb...but also Ringo is the same!) + doesn't go along well wit the lads, he was somewhat of an outsider + doesn't want to be independent from the trends of that time(so didn't want the Beatles radical haircut!) + a little unintentionally, little ego, competed with lads! + the Beatles were young and made a drastic foolish decision of kicking him out + Beatles already knew Ringo...anyway, I'm just speculating! I think Pete is a nice and humble guy, who knows, maybe he had a better life now! happy he made money from his early Beatles royalties!
Ringo never adopted the beatle haircut until later, look at a pic of thier first album, no mop top on Ringo, that's just an old wives tale
Cmon, Ringo is superb drummer.
Pete's timing was PERFECT! He's had well over 10,000 hours of professional work in Germany just before getting let go and Ringo was offered a early contract...I heard Pete in 68' awesome 60's Drummer! Jealousy is by contention over image not skills!
Cousins! great dude...
This is actually the true story, every part of it. Ringo was not a very good drummer as explained by Brian Epstein and never once did he fill in for Pete Best. The other drummers from Liverpool tried to emulate Pete Best's style. One of the reasons the name Beatles was selected was because of Best's heavy bass drum. Lennon went on the record of saying they were sick of Pete Best but it was because he drew attention away from the other band members. Fact of the matter is EMI wanted to sign them but not with Best. Ringo filled in as the drummer but not because he was great, just better than Best. Which shocked everybody in the Liverpool music scene.
5th beatle Andy White, 6th beatle Tony Sheridan, 7th beatle George Martin, 8th beatle stu Sutcliffe, 9th beatles Brian Epstien, Pete Best Lurking around 10th spot
George Martin has to be 5th.
George Martin is even considered the 5th Beatle by the Beatles.
Where would Neil Aspinall rank in that list?
LOVE PETE BEST GREAT DRUMMER.. HE WAS THE BEATLES...💗❤💚💙🥁🥁🥁🥁🎤🍾
Pete Best played with the Beatles in Germany, and a little afterwards, for 2 years. This is back when they weren't famous, playing in small and dirty clubs in Hamburg and sleeping rough in a storage room backstage. If he had been such a bad drummer, they had plenty of time and opportunity to replace him, but never did.
Let's not forget that here we are talking about being worse than bloody Ringo Starr, one of the most average drummers in the history of music.
Best shared all of their problems and hardships that come with any young band, but when it was time to get some of the rewards he was kicked out. It is worth noting that less than 2 months after he was fired, the Beatles released their first record and quickly rose to fame and popularity. He was never given a real reason for dismissal. John, Paul and George never told him in person but let their manager, Epstein, deal with it. And behind his back kept saying what a lousy drummer he was and that he didn't "fit in" with the others.
I am a Beatle fan, but the way Pete Best was treated shames them. I am absolutely convinced, had Best remained in the Beatles he would have performed just as well as Ringo did, if not better.
Today you can listen to some of their early recordings with Best at the drums; you can't tell the difference. I'd take Best over Ringo anytime.
VULTUSPRIME on stage? Maybe. In a studio where metronomic time is critical for a drummer, especially in 1962 when there were no click tracks, not a chance. Ringo may not be flashy, but if there is one thing he is flawless at, it is keeping time.
At times, Ringo stood in for Pete when the Beatles played in Hamburg. As for your critique of Ringo being an average drummer....listen to his swing on 'I Feel Fine', his tour de force on 'Rain', the fills in 'A Day in the Life', the style on 'Come Together'...could Pete have done that? Ringo was far better than an average, drummer like George H, he had taste, style and even melody that fitted the Beatles perfectly. He was nowhere near technically as brilliant as Ginger Baker, or flashy and fast like Keith Moon, but he is in that group of great stylist/timekeeper drummers...Topper Headon is another one I can think of off the top of my head.
Exactly, it total bs
@@terrythekittie I mean... in terms of musical perfection... lots of the Beatles work is average. Ive heard far better bassists and far better drummers
Well, Pete Best may not have been the best drummer for all I know, and probably wasn't suited for the band. But out of all the Beatles, he seems to have lived the best personal life. He's been married to the same wife for over 50 years, has two daughters and four grandchildren. That can make your life feel far richer than a lifetime of concerts. Meanwhile, the fab four got into a few ''indecent acts" that ruined their own marriages, and John Lennon had a very strained relationship with his first son Julian.
If I remember correctly, it was a case of Martin not liking Pete's drumming (timing, style or experience level?) and wanted a pro session drummer for recording. The shame of it was that they ended up with Ringo, and he was replaced by a session drummer on the early recordings anyway! So in fact it was all for nothing in the end. So spoilt tit Martin was to blame.
Just one session.
Pete Best didn't practice and that's why he was fired
It was not because he did not practice, he just was not good enough....you're like the present news media who are busy creating fake news...lol
@@yell50 That's the same thing. If you don't practice, you aren't going to be good enough
@@skord176 if Best was the best drummer in the world the boys would have still give him the boot, there are two reasons, first reason is they could not bond with best he never took drugs he was basically a clean living guy who never joined in with the activities this made him the outsider, plus best was getting more fan mail than the other three put together and this did not go down well with the others. When it comes down to it the boys felt no allegence to best, so when they saw Ringo he was like the perfect fit. It's really as simple as that.
Andy White was booked to replace Ringo, not to replace Pete Best.
Incorrect. Martin had already booked White after he heard Best.
Yes, true. Although when Ringo turned up, Martin insisted that White do the session.
Too bad he isn't friends with Paul - I'm sure those two guys could talk for hours over a beer about the old days
It was EMI who told Brian Epstein that EMI was willing to make a Beatls record as long as they changed drummer. If John, Paul and George considered Pete Best a non a good drummer, they would have fired him before. Instead, they made auditions with him. In short, the EMI decided that Pete was not good enought. John, Paul and George decided to get him out of the band, just because EMI wanted it. True, John Paul and George did not defend him, even because they preferred Ringo, but still it was a decision by EMI
Wrong, George Martin said Pete could remain the drummer for the Beatles, and play all the live gigs, but that he wanted a pro session drummer on the album (which was common practice at the time). But John, Paul, and George took this opportunity to sack Pete, and bring in the non-threatening Ringo. It was motivated by pure jealousy.
Ringo is no great drummer. He's not a master of his instrument at all. He is very capable drummer and more of a personality and he did a great job putting that all together to be a mega success in life. Pete Best is a good drummer but does not have Ringo's charisma. I find it hard to believe this was about drumming because Ringo is not great shakes but rather it is all about personality and Ringo has got that all over Pete Best. I was fortunate to have seen Pete Best play live a few years ago and he was great. His band play 50's and 60's rock. Wonderful show. I had Pete sign a poster offered at his show and he was very kind and pleasant to me. A nice man. My sense was that he was a little reserved. Whatever the case it was great to see his show, have him sign the poster and meet such a friendly good person.
I met and heard Pete a few years ago as well and did not think he was a good drummer (and I played percussion for years). He had a second drummer as back up. He was very nice and friendly but struck me as shy, not a good fit personality wise for The Beatles. Also, remember Stuart Sutcliffe was a heart throb and nobody booted him out. Also, Ringo IS very competent and adapted to all the various styles the Beatles played as they matured. I don't think Best could have done that. He's still playing old rock. Why was Best not snapped up by another group that became famous if he was so good? Ringo was considered the best in Liverpool and played a lot of professional gigs before joining The Beatles. Being flashy and showing off does not make a drummer good with very few exceptions. Ringo was steady.
I would have hoped he was able to share in the success -
that's a good thing -
Pete really was good looking. I’m definitely not crushing on him but still from a female point of view I think he’s alright. His drumming and Ringo’s actually sounded the same except Pete drummed a lot quieter so maybe he was fired because the band needed a drummer that could really pound those drums, ya know?
lack of skils. thats it. i played in a local band, we had auditions, pete would have not made it.i cant believe they dealt with him for the 2 years in hamburg.i know,no choice.even in hindsight, pete best could not play the drums for me ? nice guy, very good looking? not a good drummer.
Pete Best just had money and time, he didn`t go to Hamburg for money but for fun. He was from succesful family and his mother paid for everything he wanted. That`s why he was in good terms with John who was from a middle class family too.
Nigel Topnbottom? Hmm, I wonder
1:51 I don't think it is a real document. The content is true but the document itself how it looks is fake. I cannot find it anywhere. These are the famous words and that document should be somewhere online. The other thing I wonder is that these words have been said by Dick Rowe.
Glad he finally got paid
Lennon was nobody, McCartney depressed
cause screaming girls thought handsome Pete was the best
and till today people can't really tell- talent from handsome and music from hair.
So behold little bitches and never forget, the story of Pete who wasn't really the Best.
This is the "best" explanation of what really happened.
What’s with the Stewie Griffin impression?
Luckiest man in the history of show business. A mediocre at best drummer, he was in the right place at the right time when a budding band that was destined to become the greatest of all time needed a drummer. Pete just happened to be there to fill the spot but he wasn't up to the task when the Beatles were ready to move on to the next level. As John would say years later, Pete just did not improve as the others had. But as the video pointed out, Pete would go on to make his millions some thirty-odd years later after being fired. Not too shabby.
I See Zayn malik's attitude, can anyone else spot it?
I heard the reason why they kicked him out because Paul McCarthy wanted his brother on the drum
They sacked Best and Epstein was supposed to find them a decent drummer, as advised by Martin. Epstein found Ringo and Martin wasn't impressed and promptly brought in a season guy of his choice. That must have been a blow to Ringo's confidence. Ringo persevered eventually winning over the doubters with his charm and determination. He became the quirky drummer that shaped Beatles sound as much as Lennon's rasping voice, McCartney's melodies or Harrison's harmonies.
Pete Best was there for the first Parlophone audition. George Martin signed them but suggested they use a session drummer for recording sessions and Pete Best for live shows (at the time a lot of groups didn't play on their records). Instead The Beatles sacked Pete and brought in Ringo. When they turned up to record Love Me Do they introduced Ringo as their new drummer but George Martin had already brought in a session drummer as he didn't know that Pete had been replaced. It was agreed that they would record two versions of Love Me Do, one with Ringo and one with the session drummer Andy White (on which Ringo was relegated to tambourine). After this Ringo played on almost every record, apart from one or two where other Beatles stepped in.
@@profmartin1967 You're wrong. Martin rejected Ringo's studio performance, and then brought in Alan White. Ringo was not allowed to drum in studio until, "Please Please Me", and the other three lads had to BEG Martin to agree.
hello from kurikokaleidoscope thumbs up and subscribed!
Pete best is so handsome
George Harrison wanted Ringo in the group. He convinced Paul McCartney and together they convinced John Lennon which was the leader of the group at that time.
AND Pete was a really bad drummer
Did Pete BEST LOOSE HIS popularity WITH the girls WHEN HE WAS NOT IN BEATLES ANYMORE
IF SO,WHY?
Title is dumb. Of course he was kicked out of The Beatles.
It's pronounced Brian Ep Stine not Steen.
Richard Dale who cares, he’s still a Jew
To say they got rid of Pete because he was too good looking is ridiculous. Brian Epstein would have vetoed it, even John would have vetoed it. Had to be either chemistry or his ability level or both.
It was a damn great decision. Looked like a different band with Pete.
1. He would not ware the same haircut as the others - he wasn’t a team player
2. He was late and sick to many times
3. His mother phoned Brian Epstein all the time “what are you going to do with Pete and the boys?” And Brian nearly unsigned the Beatles because of Pete’s mother.
4. He was a lousy drummer. Listen to the clips where Pete vs Ringo plays at the same songs - it speak for itself.
5. And he didn’t fit the group, his personality and humor didn’t work with the others.
Damn! Pete Best was HOT in that interview!!!!!!
Well put together clip. Liverpool accent, hmmm, not so good.
