A friend of mine knew Ringo from before he joined the Beatles and was around when he did join them in August 1962. He said that the truth about Pete being replaced was pretty much what Paul's quoted as saying here. Ringo was a much better drummer,, but so were others in Liverpool so that was 0nly part of it - the main reason was that Ringo's personality fitted perfectly with the others - Paul John and George were like three beautifully fitting pieces of a four piece jigsaw puzzle and Ringo completed it 100% perfectly - the four shared the same general attitudes to life, the same silly sense of humour, even a secret language. And, most importantly, they were all equally determined to succeed. Look how they all improved as musicians - compare Ringo's drumming on, for example, Love Me Do, with his amazing work on songs like Ticket To Ride, Rain and Tomorrow Never Knows within about three years. So the change turned out to be fully justified by the astounding way they ALL developed as musicians as the years went by.
History prove The Beatles needed Ringo. There is no point arguing against that. But one can still feel for Best. I am glad he got some financial reward, even if it took some time.
@@segalknievel7173 What... bands aren't allowed to change personnel? Guess you're not a fan of Fleetwood Mac then... or 90% of bands that ever existed.
@@segalknievel7173 No, I didn't miss a thing. But you missed my point. Every musician and every band has the right to decide who they make music with, and change if and when they want to (regardless of whether during, after, or before fame, if any). If you don't accept that, then you won't accept the majority of musicians and bands in the world. I'll just add that it's kind of ridiculous to comment on a video narrated by an A.I. bot who doesn't speak for Pete or anyone for that matter. I don't hear Pete complaining, he's over it, so you may as well get over it too.
He went through long years of depression and he contemplated suicide, especially during the years when the Beatles went supernova, so he wasn't an easy ride for him...not at all...
I’m glad Best got royalties from Anthology 1. I think I he deserved it. He sent McCartney a birthday greeting, offering to open for him at one gig. While it sounds like it’d get publicity, it also seems unlikely. With all due respect to Pete Best, that’d be like dating someone in high school and expecting a wedding invitation years later!
Yes. Drummers (along with the bass guitar) form the rhythm section, upon which the rest of a song us built upon. A band plays to the rhythm section, not vice-versa. Pete played the band, but the band (Beatled) properly played to Ringo.
@@terryriley8963 still no talent, Ringo could collaborate with other musicians as well. Pete had a drum kit which the band needed at the time, end of story
@@danielgolus4600 Pete only sounded good in those small clubs cause nobody is there to see or here the musicians sound technically perfect. It's a small club, everyone is stinking drunk and probably the band as well. Yet, Pete never landed another job with a band cause the lack of skills.
Wrong !!! They got Pete because he was the only one available with his own drum set so he played with the band for over a year. What motivated them to kick him out was that George Martin told them Pete wasn't good enough for recording, I think that's when they saw the opportunity to kick him out because obviously they didn't like him as a person, Ringo was a better fit because of his personality, but Both Ringo and Pete weren't professional drummers , both weren't good . But after all it didn't matter what drummer, John, George and Paul were the Real musicians ..
@@carlosvelasquez9922 George Martin wasn't the only producer that didn't like Pete's drumming. Ron Richards, Bert Kampfert, and Mike Smith also had complained about his drumming. Kampfert even took away all Pete's drums except for the snare and hi hat while recording them in Germany. Those are the recordings Bernard Purdy was later brought in to add some drums to.
@michaelharrington75 ok , but George Martín said that they could use Pete for live performances as they were doing , so he wasn't that bad . Remember that George Martin said the same about Ringo . So it's not that George Martin ever said that Ringo was a better option for recording . Of course after the fact of the Beatles' success, everyone says how great Ringo drumming is, but Ringo was just doing what he was asked for just like Pete or any other would have done to make it with the group .Any drummer would have made it with the Beatles.
@@carlosvelasquez9922 Any drummer wouldn't have done great for the Beatles. Ringo wrote the perfect drum beat for each song. He didn't play the traditional way. He added unique drum parts to their songs. Ticket to Ride, In My Life, I feel fine, Strawberry Fields Forever, Come Together, ect. All very unique and iconic beats that add to the song, and make it stand out.
They were teenagers. They were advised to get a new drummer by industry executives. They made a hard choice, and it was the correct one. They didn't stay in touch because it was painful and awkward. It always is. And then The Beatles went on a ride they never returned from. What did you do in your teenage breakups? Nobody knew what was going to happen.
"They were advised to get a new drummer by industry executives." Not true at all. George Martin simply said that he wasn't good enough to be on the records (but could still play on the road with them), and the guys acted after that.
Its simple Best was a crap drummer, Ringo was a top notch drummer. Best was quiet and didn't fit in, Ringo was a real character and the Beatles loved him. Its very simple
Ringo never played on many of the early Beatles tracks, he was not good enough at that time. They used session musicians as time cost money. Ringo never played on PS I Love You, that was Andy White.
I just heard some BBC recordings and thought the drums didn’t sound very tight, it turned out it was Pete playing. There’s a subtle difference between someone who is natural at doing something and someone who’s trying to do something. A lot of bands in America in the 60’s used session players in the studio players, George Martin had hired a session drummer named Andy White, that the Beatles could do whatever for performances, but for recording Pete wasn’t good enough. The Beatles had jammed with Ringo and had noticed the difference when Ringo played with them, and perhaps when Bert Kaempfert and George Martin commented that Pete wasn’t quite good enough that was the final straw. I’m glad that Pete has made some serious retirement money from the Anthology project. I think George Harrison was right in his assessment that Ringo was the fourth Beatle, just hadn’t shown up yet! The Beatles catalog and band dynamic wouldn’t have been the same without Ringo!
All of this is true, but it must be noted that Ringo made a complete hash of his first two attempts at doing a studio recording, and so George Martin insisted on going with Andy White anyway. Ringo was a more flexible and sophisticated drummer than Pete Best, but that does not necessarily mean "better." In the end, I think the main reason for switching to Ringo was just that the other three got along with him better than they did with Pete. And heaven knows, even then the terrible fights and rows that would follow within the band over the next few years showed that to be a pretty thin reason.
@@ranaway9307 that is it exactly anybody that has heard the early recordings with Pete knows that he had timing issues and how many examples do we need for people to believe it? George Martin said his timing wasn’t good Bert Kurt said his timing wasn’t good and many other people no one ever said that about Ringo Ringo is good and he’s very imaginative as a drummer.

The truth is Pete wasn't up to scratch. George Martin said he could play in gigs but not record. Besides according to George Harrison he was moody and would disappear with his girlfriend for days when they were in Hamburg. People say they were jealous because he was good looking - bah humbug ! - I think the other three needed a good musician not a poster. He can't complain he has been making money on complaining about the Beatles for years .
Of course Best was up to scratch. Wasn't he the drummer when Epstein got interested. Yes, they were always jealous of Best because he was the handsome one by far, and got the girls. As for a poster boy, his replacement wasn't exactly Elvis, they wanted a jokey clone so that suited them just fine. There were better drummers than Ringo in Liverpool at the time, one in particular who turned them down. You would be surprised to know how many famous groups never played on their records. In a gig you could probably play with no drum sticks and no-one would notice because of the noisy crowds. Best never complained about the other Beatles, he just wanted to explain his side of things and that is his right. Anyway it all turned to shite in the end.
When you think about it, there's no shame in being told you weren't good enough to play with Lennon, McCartney and Harrison. Few people can say they were.
I saw the Pete Best Band play a gig in Chicago probably 20 years ago. They sounded like I'd imagined the early Beatles sounded when they were a bar band in Germany or Liverpool. There was also a 2nd drummer and Pete kept 4/4 time. The rest of the band were competent and they sounded like music from the early 60's being played well.
Ringo was a rock steady machine, and despite Paul's whining at him, he kept up with every experiment the band tried. Pete was all over the road with his cadences, pacing, and fills. Listen to his work on Anthology: he has a terrible knack for going variando or accelerando. What he did have was a mother who owned a club they could gig in.
You miss quoted George Martin. He never said anything about his looks. Looks do not make you a good musician. What he did say was that he didn't want to use him for recording. He said he never asked them to replace best. That was that. Pete best just didn't fit in. He didn't have the charisma. He did not bond with the other band members. And let's face it who wrote all the songs it made the Beatles the Beatles. It wasn't best. When they broke up he went public saying that he was replaced because they were jealous. Look at the Beatles. it had absolutely nothing to do with Pete best looks. If he was so good looking that they had to replace him why didn't his looks take him to the top and surpass the Beatles afterwards? He's embarrassed himself over the years which I'm so sorry to say it is sad. Everyone felt bad for him and he started spewing off some of this BS. He had the right to have his feelings hurt. But it was Paul by the way who reached out to give him those royalties. You guys really need to get your facts straight. There are people that don't know the truth and when you give faults quotes not only are you changing history but it's just poor reporting
That’s right Aspinal has stated over and over that Paul has thrown truth, or at least best rememberence, in the trash as he retro histories eveything, aggrandizing himself at every turn. He FOR SURE never “ reached out” to Pete at any time. The truly crappy thing about replacing Pete was the timing, Pete paid his dues in Hamburg and after they should have replaced him BEFORE they got their record deal if he was so shabby. Giving Pete the boot at the very moment the band started really happening was the worst possible timing. Paul alone is worth over a BILLION dollars he could lay 10 million on Pete on behalf of the original three and never even notice it missing but he doesn’t. Giving Pete a couple mill’s for Anthology is only fair he’s entitled to royalties on those original recordings again they are only looking out for themselves if they didn’t work out royalty terms ahead of time and gotten Pete to sign off they would have been sued after Anthology came out and most likely paid far more.
Just listen to Pete's version of Love Me Do,he's all over the place and he changes what he's playing half way through the song,I'm a musician and he definitely had to go,he couldn't even play a simple song like Love Me Do,sorry but that's the truth. Bob
@@mglb weird, I was just about to leave the exact same comment lol. I have a theory about that: I reckon that was the arrangement they'd already had in place but George Martin didn't like it so cut it out. Stowe must have been one of the few times they returned to it before eventually ditching it.
Most fans don't know the history behind the EMI recording of LOVE ME DO, but the arrangement was changed on the very day they recorded it with Pete Best, giving all of them problems. Initially, George Martin wasn't even there. The Beatles played, "Love Me Do", among 3 other songs. The engineers liked them so much they sent for Martin to come hear them. Martin listened to, "Love Me Do", and abruptly changed the arrangement, ditching the skip-beat that Pete had been playing the song with all along in the clubs. This threw Pete off, and it also threw off Paul's vocals (it's easy to hear). Engineer, Norman Smith, who worked the session said, "The problem wasn't with how Pete was playing, but rather with the new arrangement he was being told to play." I like RINGO, but we must remember the truth as Beatles fans. George Martin never said, Pete must be replaced in the band. George Martin never even said Pete would never record with the band, he simply stated that he wanted to use a session drummer for the first recording session (very commonplace).
1:44 Best never played with the Beatles again after his firing. He never saw them again. 4:33 Mona Best didn't loan the medals to John. Beatles road manager Neil Aspinal, who was living with Mona Best just picked the medals up, and took them with him for the photo shoot. I'm not sure how Ring got identical medals? No one seems to ever ask where Ringo got his medals that were identical to the ones John wore.
Pete Best has a perverse memory of History. George Martin found Pete best drumming substandard. Paul and John already knew repeat could only do rudimentary things and many times couldn't hold the beat. When Martin suggested replacing him the other Beatles already knew who they wanted, Ringo who they were a fan of and worked with in Germany. Best lost his job because he just wasn't good enough.
Ordinary Drummer at best , didn't show up a Gigs , thought the whole Beatles thing was a joke and has spent his Life blaming everyone but himself .A Band is a Team , if you're not interested in Teamwork, there's the Door . Idiot . Ringo LEFT his OWN Band to join the Beatles , that's a Team Player . Ringo was the ONLY Beatle who was a Professional Musician and earning good Money with his own Band , he took a Chance joining the Beatles became he knew they were Special . Pete Best thought they were a Joke .He gets Zero Sympathy from me .
Wings of Pegasus has a video with audio that compares the two drummers. Pete Best loses rhythm. Ringo does not. They needed the best rhythm for recording they could get. It wasn't like they came to a sudden malicious intent to do away with Pete Best.
Ringo is the better drummer. However, if they chose to unload Pete, they should have done the noble thing and paid him for his time spent in the band. That would have been the right thing to do.
Maybe it's because working class bands have no f*****g money until they make it big. It costs money to be in a band, you don't make money until you really get somewhere.
@thechuckster6838 Why? He got paid on the gig. That's how it works in the real world. If he had written any of the songs they used he would have been paid for that. When he got fired they were the Beatles not THE BEATLES, just another unsigned band. Epstein tried to help him find another band but let's face it, he got the job originally because he had a set of drums and some time. He clearly, from the fact that he never got much better as a drummer, worked with a teacher or tried to develop more chops.
When I first heard Ringos drumming on From Me To You on my sisters record player back in 1978, I wanted to be a drummer. Anyone who has the slightest clue about drumming knows that Ringo has a great style that fits perfectly into the Beatles. I also think that the Beatles did not handle Pete fair, but honestly...his drumming was simply not good enough. In the end they had no choice, they had to replace Pete.
mathemen3011. Ha, yeah, it was two Beatle albums I heard on MY SISTER’S new Sweet 16 record player gift she received in 1965 that did it for me! I was banging on everything and bought my first kit in 1971. My school had a fife & drum corp band, I went to sign up to be a drummer, but because of Ringo there was Zero room for more wannabe drummers, too bad! I could have started hitting actual drums at age twelve!!
It probably was a blessing in disguise for Pete, even if it was so devastating at the time, and for those years watching the Beatles success. If he had stayed, he probably wouldn’t have his loving family around him, as its doubtful if would have survived Beatlemania. Plus there is no way he would have survived all of those live shows with his drumming ability, especially in the stadiums of America, when they couldn’t hear each other, and he would have been pulled apart by the media. Pete got lucky (even though it can look the other way), and since the 1990’s, he’s been a millionaire rewarded from the recordings on the first Anthology album.
Pete definitely dodged a bullet, yes. He was a marked man anyway, they would have still got shot of him further down the line which would have been even more humilaiting for him.
@@georgerodrigues4638 They wanted to make the change BEFORE the Beats hit the big world picture. Because replacements don't usually go too well. Think Darrin on Bewitched.
Why's he still going on about The Beatles? He was just a temporary drummer and not a very good one. If he's so accomplished, then where are all his accomplishments? The Beatles' accomplishments were made without this guy. He has no place in Beatles history.
It's unfortunate getting booted out of the biggest group of all time. I know Ringo has his critics but he was THE perfect drummer for the Beatles. You have to remember...THEY asked him to join, he didn't come looking for a job. He made them a better group musically and his personality fit in perfectly. The Anthology recordings prove how weak Best's drumming was. He wasn't a good time keeper and every band HAS to have a good time keeper. Best was brought on because they needed a drummer to do those gigs in Hamburg.
I had a brief meet & greet with Pete a few years back when he was doing the cruise ship thing. It’s nice he has been able to make a career and even achieve fame (for an unusually unique reason).
I’ve heard Pete play .. he’s ok, but was sadly never going to cut it as a Beatles drummer. Ringo’s left hand drumming real suited the Beatles sound, even though non musical fans didn’t realize his left handed rolls added to the sound of the Beatles, I believe Ringo was the perfect drummer for the Beatles.
Ringo is regarded as a superb time keeper. His drumming is also extremely tasteful. Unfortunate for Best but listen to Ringo's licks even on the early recordings.
Before Ringo Starr became The Beatles' drummer, he had already established a strong friendship with the band members. After performances in Hamburg, Pete would often isolate himself, while John, Paul, and George would spend time with Ringo. This camaraderie extended beyond the stage, creating a natural bond between Ringo and the other three Beatles. When the time came to replace Pete Best, Ringo was the band's clear and immediate choice. The Beatles had long felt that Ringo was a better fit, both musically and personally. Their decision was further solidified by their experiences of Ringo filling in for Pete on occasions, which demonstrated the immediate chemistry and improvement in the band's overall sound.

The band continues to release groundbreaking albums and singles, and their sound evolves with Ringo's unique style. 1969: Paul McCartney's Accident Paul McCartney's accident on his farm in 1969 leads to him being wheelchair-bound. Despite this setback, McCartney remains involved in the music scene, focusing more on songwriting and producing. 1970s: The Beatles' Continued Success The Beatles, now with Ringo as their permanent drummer, continue to release hit albums and dominate the music charts. Their sound may take on different elements with Ringo's influence, but the band remains a cultural phenomenon. 1980s: Solo Ventures and Collaborations As the members of The Beatles age, they explore solo projects and collaborations. Pete Best continues his acting career, while John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr pursue various musical endeavors. 1990s: Beatles Reunion? With advancements in medical technology, there is speculation about a potential Beatles reunion. While Paul McCartney's health condition may still present challenges, the desire to perform together again becomes a topic of discussion among the surviving members. 2000s: Legacy and Recognition The Beatles' legacy continues to grow, and their impact on music is celebrated worldwide. Pete Best's acting career is celebrated, and Ringo Starr remains active in the music industry. The surviving members, along with Pete Best, occasionally come together for special events and projects. 2010s-2020s: Farewell Tours and Honors As the members of The Beatles enter their later years, they embark on farewell tours and receive numerous honors for their contributions to music and culture. The world reflects on the unique timeline that kept Pete Best in the limelight as an actor and Ringo Starr as the beloved drummer of The Beatles. Remember, this is just a creative exploration of what could have been in an alternate universe, and the actual events and outcomes would depend on numerous factors and chance occurrences.
Best never took the band serious at all ,he hardly even tryed to play good drums, and he thought the band would go nowhere he admitted to that on a TV show ,,,I've got a secret, and he had no sence of humor at all,,, and his mom , ol boy !
Mona did him no favors, making him appear as a hapless mama's boy who couldn't stand up for himself. I'm sure his removal from the band hurt, but under contract with Brian Epstein, he had opportunities no other drummer in those days had access to. Good to see he has a happy marriage and family and eventually received financial security with the Anthology windfall.
As a musician I know, what a pain in the as it is, to have a drummer behind You, who can't hold the tempo. I understand, why the Beatles chose Ringo Starr.
I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Pete Best many years ago back in the mid 80's when he worked in Old Swan Liverpool, he actually got me a job on the buses. All this bullshit about Pete being a " crap drummer " is total nonsense, Pete was a decent drummer and I think you will find there is a completely different reason why he was very unfairly sacked from the Beatles. Pete Best is a genuine and nice guy.
Most legitimate complaints don't say he's a crap drummer, they say he's barely average. His meter is inconsistent. He can only play straight time (4/4) he doesn't swing and there isn't a solid pocket. I have no doubt he's a nice guy, but having been that close to have being one of the most famous people in the world has to have left some mark on his psyche.
This is an everyday story with bands, it's only a big story because of The Beatles enormous success. Pete has still done pretty well out of it, deservedly so.
The REAL reason this all transpired was that Mona became a real pain to Epstein, calling him 3X a day, bugging him to promote Pete, and still exercising some control over bookings, such as the Cavern. Best was an equal partner in the Beatles, having signed such a deal just months before. Epstein took the opportunity of the rest of the boys various complaints, to rid himself both of Pete AND Mona. Pete could have then and there voided his firing, but he didn't know his legal rights at the time with the shock of it all. By the time he regained his " balance" weeks later, it was too late, plus he received the wrong legal advice at the time.
Don’t think Pete could have done anything about his firing, legal advice or not. Brian had his solicitor legally dissolve the Band due to them “ splitting up “ then a fresh contract was drawn up when they reformed with Ringo shortly afterwards.
Best's drumming was subpar, he wasn't a team player, and refused to get his haircut in the Beatles style like John Paul and Ringo. Firing best and hiring Ringo was the best decision they made!
This gets way too much attention, just because it is about the Beatles. People come and go in bands, leave, quit, get thrown out with or without knowing, fight, don´t fit, whatever ........
Also, during the part of the video which explained that Lennon said Pete Best needed some "training" on the drums in Germany, a picture of a book appeared on screen. The title of the book had the word 'theory' in it and at first I instantly assumed it was a book about music theory, but then I saw the book's subtitle said something about "social change", nothing to do with music or the topic being discussed at all. 😂 Just a senseless shout out to social change in the middle of a part of the video about Best needing drumming lessons. Completely random! 🤷♂
All you have to do is listen to the star club tapes and you realize how amazing Ringo’s drumming was. He was miles ahead of Best and John, Paul and George were only looking to make great music. Nothing else.
But after all it didn't matter what drummer, John, George and Paul were the Real musicians .
The stark reality is that if was Best was any good he wouldn't have needed J, G and P and could have been a success without them. History proves otherwise.
I really have no sympathy for Best. It happens to lots of musicians up and down the country, and the Beatles decision proved to be the right one. If Best stayed with the Beatles, they certainly wouldn't have become the huge act that they did, then we wouldn't be having these debates
I have a lot of sympathy for Best, but he never did his homework. He never said, "They threw me out, I've got to practice more, I've got to take more lessons, I've got to become a better drummer." Anyone else would have done so.
You know a band isn't just a band but it's a massive cultural and historical institution when people can still get many views on details like this 60 years later. No one will be doing this for pretty well any band from the past 45 years. And I love a lot of the post-punk British bands and beyond. Few even care now.
Simply, the Beatles would not have achieved anywhere near their astonishing success had Pete remained in the band. Ringo was the final, necessary ingredient, personality-wise (drum-wise, too). As George said "History shows Ringo WAS the member of the band..." After the Beatles, Pete could not, and did not, achieve ANY degree of success - despite his once-direct connection/association with the Beatles.
I agree completely. The Beatles sounded like a different band once Ringo replaced Best, a much better band. Ringo's drumming added an excitement to the sound, punctuation for the vocal phrasing, etc. Best gave them a muddy, plodding sound, in my opinion. We'll never know where an alternate reality would take us, but there's a good case to be made that Pete is better off that he got fired. Imagine The Beatles keeping Pete and going nowhere as a band. Instead, they got Ringo and took off, and as a result Pete became a millionaire simply by having been the fired drummer of a couple pre-fame years. Although I can understand his ego being hurt, monetarily and fame-wise Pete is likely much better off for having been fired by The Beatles.
Not even 2 minutes in at 1:46 your facts are wrong. Pete did not show up to any gigs after his dismissal. Johnny Hutch filled in for the rest of the week until Ringo joined on Saturday.
If The Beatle had only been a one hit wonder band (with Pete having been kicked out before their one hit), no one would be saying a thing about Pete getting kicked out. It's only because The Beatles were so successful that this is even talked about. People come and go from bands, all the time, and generally nobody makes nearly the big deal out of those situations, as they do out of this one. How many people entered and exited Benny Goodman's band ? Probably lots, but no one makes a big deal about that, nor even knows about it (for the most part.) Pete's personality was a "steady as she goes" personality, and the others were more agressive, and more extroverted. Pete is a very nice chap (I've met him and talked with him a bit, and he is just like he appears on the talk shows.) But, being a nice chap didn't work in his favor. He probably was content with his looks, the girls paying attention to him, and his drumming. He probably saw no reason to change the recipe. That is where he was different from the others, and that is what ended his career as a Beatle. "Steady as she goes" wasn't the de facto mantra of The Beatles. In reality he was just one of thousands of guys that came and went, as members of rock bands. (PS: Pete's low key, friendly, nice personality has probably served him well in life. He had the patience to be a trainer, which is a form of teaching. I'll bet that he was good at that, and was well liked. He's probably an excellent father, too. Compare that with John and Julian. So, Pete did all right in life. He was an average schmoe, just like lots of us. He did alright.)
There is no doubt that Ringo is a brilliant drummer. I have never heard Pete Best play drums. I was only a baby when he was in the Beatles. I get the impression here that his drumming style and the way he put himself across did not fit with the Beatles and what they were trying to achieve both in terms of music and the general image. But does the style of drumming not suitable for the Beatles necessarily mean that his drumming abilities were poor? Maybe as a musician, he was not in the same league as the Beatles. Nevertheless, I did feel sorry for the way he was treated, especially after what his mother did for the band. Despite the click bait (I never got to hear who he really hated), I wanted to find out whether he actually managed to achieve some success in the music world, and I am glad he achieved some success eventually all be it on a smaller scale than the Beatles.
Nobody knew how great the Beatles were to become. Paul thought they would last 5 years . Who knew . Pete probably would not have been too bothered about it and maybe have gotten another band if it wasn’t for the fact that the Beatles became world famous. That’s life I am afraid
Pete Best has been B'ing since The Beatles kicked him out in 1962 and has made money over and over again. It's old news that no one wants to hear anymore. Firing Pete was the best thing The Beatles did and to get Ringo instead. I mean it's natural to say "John, Paul, George and Ringo"...not so much with " John, Paul, George and PETE" The Beatles were no exception to have arguments and disagreements...ALL bands did and still do. Pete is still jealous of Ringo and his fame and popularity for over 60. years, and Pete's just a bitter little old man who hasn't moved on with his life. If you wanna feel for someone who was used for a drummer, then kicked out again after all the things he went through with all that short time period, read about Jimmy Nicole...his story is more sad than poor Pete Best's story...
Jimmy Nicol was not used and kicked out. He was hired to fill in while Ringo was in hospital. No deception, he played a few shows, was paid and went home when Ringo returned. His later difficulties were not the Beatles' fault.
Amazing people thinking that Paul was jealous of Peter ‘s looks. Give me a break as Paul was always the better looking of the banda. I think they say that about Peter and Paul because Paul was young just 9 mos old than George and both of them couldn’t do a lot like Peter could. The reason about Stu too being old and acompanhe john to pubs etc
Among all negative remarks about him , Pete Best had curly hair ....lol . it's being said in the documentary . Imagine Ringo Starr, allegedly said to be the "Best drummer" in the Mersey's Rock scene was black . Would he likely to be contacted by the Beatles ? Not black only , but also with curly hair .... The cloning experiments would have been too risky for fullfilling . Hence the Three others having to put up with Best's presence despite his curly hair , his being self retired and his limited drumming abilities . Despite the Beatles became a prolific association , them letting Brian Epstein in charge of the dirty job to firing Best has left on them an indelible mark of cowardice whatever Best's talents .
There is always another story when it comes to The Beatles. Regardless of how you feel about them, they were ABSOLUTELY a cultural tool used in ways we will never understand.
I don't believe the jealousy theory for one minute. Fans who favoured Best might well have speculated that. At the time he was likely just as good - and rough - a player as the rest of the band were - Ringo was better, and was /is more outgoing. I am glad that Best sued Ringo for that defamation though, and particularly I respect McCartney's making reparation by ensuring Best got good royalties from Anthology.
He sucked so he got sacked! If you wanna fuck up a band real fast, get a bad drummer. I have been playing for decades and I’m still amazed at how precise and creative Ringo Starr was with the variety of the music that the three writers threw at him. And the three of them loved hanging out and laughing with him. Pete got a bunch of money so shut the hell up and go enjoy your life.
Pete’s (Randy) mum Mona won a large sum of money and bought a large house where they opened the Casbah Club for the Beatles and some others to gather rehearse and play. The Beatles helped paint it. They wrote some songs there. And, the Beatles manager Neil Aspinall rented a room at the house and had an affair with Pete’s mum Mona who bor Neil’s Son.
And yet Ringo didn't play the drums on their first hit record Love Me Do. If you're going to argue technically then none of the Beatles were virtuosos. They were just 4 hardworking guys who played something until it sounded right.
@@peterwilson9165 Andrew McLuckie White (27 July 1930 - 9 November 2015) was a Scottish drummer, primarily a session musician. He is best known for temporarily replacing Ringo Starr on drums for the Beatles' first single, "Love Me Do".
@@2011littlejohn1 Andy white replaced Pete Best's on the Beatles 1st single. Ringo just came in at the wrong time. George Martin didn't know that Pete had been replaced. That's the only reason Andy played on the single. He didn't play on the album or ever again with the Beatles.
Pete Best as a drummer--played with an off-time-shuffle, with fills that were odd. John Lennon stated, "we only used Pete Best to tour Germany, and we had to teach him quarter-notes-on-the-bass-drum, to keep a basic groove." George Martin was not impressed by Beatles with Best, he thought they were sloppy, and undisciplined. The only player in the band that had real talent was Lennon & Harrison. Pete Best was forced out because he couldn't play, and George Martin was already using ghost drummers, and other musicians to construct the Beatles myth. Show business is all smoke & mirrors. Producer (Qunicy Jones), stated in an interview, that Paul McCartney was the worst bass player of his time. He was much more critical of Ringo Starr stating, "Ringo Starr couldn't not execute a simple fill in 4/4, time signature, so we asked him to take a break, and got a session drummer down the hall and Ringo had no idea of the switch." George Martin stated, "Ringo Starr couldn't do a drum roll to save his life." Ringo Starr was playing with a successful band in Liverpool with (Rory Storm & the Hurricanes). Ringo had a much stronger back-beat in straight 4/4 time. While Pete Best had won the best looker in the Beatles, musically he wasn't the right fit. John Lennon was extremely manipulating, and knew that Pete Best's mother was a powerful booker for gigs, for they attempted to placate her. It didn't work. Session drummer (Bernard Purdie) disclosed that he played on over (Twenty-two Beatles songs), and noted three other drummers were used on the Beatles recordings, and did-not-include-Pete Best or Ringo Starr. Listen to the three versions of the "Love Me Do." First listen to the Pete Best version. It shows you he cannot play. Next, listen to the Ringo Starr Version. Actually, he only plays tambourine. Next, listen to the session drummer (Andy White), who made the grade, made the cut, and that is what you hear on the single. It is debatable that Ringo Starr played on the version on album, however, engineers on that track, state for a fact it was (Andy White). Note, anytime you hear the tambourine on a Beatles song, it is most likely Ringo Starr. There is a different person playing the drums, who was brought in by the power structure who controlled the operation and image of the Beatles. "Listen to what the man said." (Wings & Billy). A.K.A. William Campbell, (Billy Shears).
Why the pic of the BG member at about 3 min mark? No connection?? I would rather wish to claim that I was kicked out of the Beatles than any other band.
Was Pete best crying alligator tears when Paul made sure he got 5 million dollars royalties when he could have tied him up in court? You did alright pal for a forsaken beatle!
This sounds entirely believable to me. Thank you for the explanation.
Pete really was a crap drummer

History prove The Beatles needed Ringo. There is no point arguing against that. But one can still feel for Best. I am glad he got some financial reward, even if it took some time.
Pete Best is a millionaire, and he's more famous than me, so being fired by the Beatles wasn't so bad.

Pete was a drummer who could play along with a song, Ringo was a musician who knew how to play the song.

Anthology: John said, “We got Pete Best because we needed a Drummer the next day.” As they left for Hamburg.

Amen
"They were advised to get a new drummer by industry executives." Not true at all. George Martin simply said that he wasn't good enough to be on the records (but could still play on the road with them), and the guys acted after that.
Its simple Best was a crap drummer, Ringo was a top notch drummer. Best was quiet and didn't fit in, Ringo was a real character and the Beatles loved him. Its very simple
Well said
Were you there?
Not true. Your limited in knowledge sorry
Pete best was a technically correct drummer, ringo wasn't! He was left handed playing right handed, best didn't get on with the other 3
Ringo never played on many of the early Beatles tracks, he was not good enough at that time.
@russdowns The Drummer is the Metronome of the Group !!! Listening to Pete Play on later recordings he definitely has TIMING ISSUES !!!!!!!!

The truth is Pete wasn't up to scratch. George Martin said he could play in gigs but not record. Besides according to George Harrison he was moody and would disappear with his girlfriend for days when they were in Hamburg. People say they were jealous because he was good looking - bah humbug ! -
I think the other three needed a good musician not a poster.
Keeping time is important for any competent musician but for a drummer it is absolutely essential
Not only keeping time, but making it swing
Bob
Strangely enough, Ringo does the same thing on Love Me Do on the Stowe School recording from 1963. Odd. It's on TH-cam. Check it out.
@@mglb weird, I was just about to leave the exact same comment lol. I have a theory about that: I reckon that was the arrangement they'd already had in place but George Martin didn't like it so cut it out. Stowe must have been one of the few times they returned to it before eventually ditching it.
@@georgerodrigues4638 that sounds like a very good and extremely relevant theory that you have come up with George!
@@mglb Ringo's transitions from verse to chorus and verse to chorus to bridge are smoother than Pete's, even on the recoding you just mentioned 🤨
A GOOD drummer can make a band.
A BAD one can’t..
It was only for recording Pete was being replaced, Martin has stated this many times.
I'm sure Pete Best is not the first, last or only band member to be replaced by a musical band...he did make millions...better than anything I made
They were not happy with Pete as a drummer and Ringo was a major upgrade! It was meant to be!
Ordinary Drummer at best , didn't show up a Gigs , thought the whole Beatles thing was a joke and has spent his Life blaming everyone but himself .A Band is a Team , if you're not interested in Teamwork, there's the Door . Ringo was the ONLY Beatle who was a Professional Musician and earning good Money with his own Band , he took a Chance joining the Beatles became he knew they were Special . It’s possible that the Beatles couldn’t have matched Ringo’s earnings to ask him to join earlier than they did.

Yes, you are right!👍 I just listened to it, I'm 60 and have listened to it a gazillion times in my life.😂
Wings of Pegasus has a video with audio that compares the two drummers. Pete Best loses rhythm. Ringo does not. They needed the best rhythm for recording they could get. It wasn't like they came to a sudden malicious intent to do away with Pete Best.
The Beatles would not have been The Beatles without Ringo Starr !! The lineup was meant to be , it's that simple . 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Ringo is the better drummer. However, if they chose to unload Pete, they should have done the noble thing and paid him for his time spent in the band. That would have been the right thing to do.
Absolutely correct!!!
So he was not paid at all. That is really bad. Very shoddy treatment.
Maybe it's because working class bands have no f*****g money until they make it big. It costs money to be in a band, you don't make money until you really get somewhere.
He got paid when he played in Hamburg.
Pete Best should consider himself lucky to even play with the other 3 !! Replacing him was the best thing ever in the Music Industry!!
Not really
Why did the Beatles sack Pete Best and hire you? "I was better than he was." - Ringo
And they would have used a studio musician drummer. Ringo was creative, Pete probably not. But was sad for Pete Best anyway.
Ringo made drumming look easy. It isn't.
No, just the one time. Andy White on 'Love Me Do.'@Cliff589
Pete definitely dodged a bullet, yes. He was a marked man anyway, they would have still got shot of him further down the line which would have been even more humilaiting for him.

Yes, exactly Ringo. Drumming on rain excellent.

Pete Best, revolutionary of rock'n'roll ... Ramones' famous beat was clearly inspired in Pete Best's way of drumming (1961)

The simple fact is Pete Best was aloof mean and moody. The other beatles got on well with Ringo he was a better fit personality wise. 😅
I think that ultimately, everything worked out for the Best... ;)
😂😉👍
Im glad pete received money from the anthology 👍🏻 pete seems pretty cool.
Best's drumming was subpar, he wasn't a team player, and refused to get his haircut in the Beatles style like John Paul and Ringo. Firing best and hiring Ringo was the best decision they made!
By far.
I thought it was classy of McCartney to make sure that Pete Best got a nice pay day from the Anthology.
Classy? A guilty conscience more like!!
@tbeau6663 Lol! Guilty for what?
Don’t know about best but I can tell u as a guy who hires drummers for my song writing ..star is a brilliant drummer among the best in rock
This gets way too much attention, just because it is about the Beatles. People come and go in bands, leave, quit, get thrown out with or without knowing, fight, don´t fit, whatever ........
Gotta love AI videos! Why the sudden photo of Barry Gibb? He doesn't even look like Pete Best! 😂
And all those pix of tribute bands that don't look much like the real guys
Also, during the part of the video which explained that Lennon said Pete Best needed some "training" on the drums in Germany, a picture of a book appeared on screen. The title of the book had the word 'theory' in it and at first I instantly assumed it was a book about music theory, but then I saw the book's subtitle said something about "social change", nothing to do with music or the topic being discussed at all. 😂 Just a senseless shout out to social change in the middle of a part of the video about Best needing drumming lessons. Completely random! 🤷♂
Tired of hearing this guy whining. The only person to make a living from being fired.
That’s probably where any hate stems from.
All you have to do is listen to the star club tapes and you realize how amazing Ringo’s drumming was. He was miles ahead of Best and John, Paul and George were only looking to make great music. Nothing else.
🎶 All we are saaaayiing......is give Pete a chance.🎶🥁
Thank You JL.
They did and he didn't work out.
@@davidmarks5400 Pete Best was the Best.
It was the best decision that John, Paul and George ever made.
But after all it didn't matter what drummer, John, George and Paul were the Real musicians .
Ringo was a professional drummer. He played with the top groups in Liverpool before the Beatles asked him to join them.
@@peterwilson9165correct, he packed in his apprenticeship just months from its completion to go professional.
The stark reality is that if was Best was any good he wouldn't have needed J, G and P and could have been a success without them. History proves otherwise.
Incorrect. He never played again with them after getting sacked. He refused
Pete was asked to but never performed with the Beatles after he was sacked
My pride and joy is a Pete Best sign poster
They wanted to make the change BEFORE the Beats hit the big world picture. Because replacements don't usually go too well. Think Darrin on Bewitched.
The deadline for replacing Pete was the Cavern TV recording .
No, don't think Darren on Bewitched. Darren #1 was far more popular than #2. Health issues sacked #1.
@@Mister8224 Isn't that the point I just made.???
@@marblox9300I thought you meant the opposite. Sorry.
I stopped listening to the Beatles when they replaced Pete their drummer. For me, the Beatles will always be that original lineup which was the Best.
The best lineup was Stu on bass, Pete on drums. It went downhill after all the chaos and change.
They were better when they were the quarrymen.
They could've had two drummers like the Allman Brothers.
In my opinion Ringo is Best and Pete will always be a Star. 🌟 😉
It's hard to argue when so many in the industry said Pete was not a great drummer.
In Hamburg Tony Sheridan used to needle them about Pete’s playing, could probably be where the dissatisfaction started.
This has AI written all over it !
Yeah it makes me sleepy!🥱🙄😂
Accurate it isn’t.
Wouldn’t base any thoughts on this video, it’s full of inaccuracies.
Sorry Pete but it was pure Business decision to dump you back in 1962 you Sir came up short. Some 30 years later you had a FAT PAYDAY!
"Old news that no one wants to hear anymore"- and yet YOU came to listen and comment.
Jimmy Nicol was not used and kicked out. He was hired to fill in while Ringo was in hospital. No deception, he played a few shows, was paid and went home when Ringo returned. His later difficulties were not the Beatles' fault.
Best wasn’t the Best !! Hence the outcome
Pete Best did NOT play any more gigs after he was fired
Had he done so, they would have told him why they were getting Ringo in.
The Ringo quote was a lighthearted response to a question.
Pete was too well behaved.
It does seem that way.👍
Karma will bring justice for Pete Best.
And yet Ringo didn't play the drums on their first hit record Love Me Do. If you're going to argue technically then none of the Beatles were virtuosos. They were just 4 hardworking guys who played something until it sounded right.
You need to study Beatles history better buddy
@@peterwilson9165 Andrew McLuckie White (27 July 1930 - 9 November 2015) was a Scottish drummer, primarily a session musician. He is best known for temporarily replacing Ringo Starr on drums for the Beatles' first single, "Love Me Do".
@@2011littlejohn1 Andy white replaced Pete Best's on the Beatles 1st single. Ringo just came in at the wrong time. George Martin didn't know that Pete had been replaced. That's the only reason Andy played on the single. He didn't play on the album or ever again with the Beatles.
@@peterwilson9165 The point is White did play on the single release whatever the reason.
@@2011littlejohn1 no, the point is he played on the single because Pete Best's wasn't good enough
I noticed that, a few times, there was a very brief inclusion of a 'modern day Beatles look-alike cover band'. What was that all about?
Best whining about jealousy. He was not a good drummer .
Pete Best as a drummer--played with an off-time-shuffle, with fills that were odd. John Lennon stated, "we only used Pete Best to tour Germany, and we had to teach him quarter-notes-on-the-bass-drum, to keep a basic groove."
George Martin was not impressed by Beatles with Best, he thought they were sloppy, and undisciplined.
He was much more critical of Ringo Starr stating, "Ringo Starr couldn't not execute a simple fill in 4/4, time signature, so we asked him to take a break, and got a session drummer down the hall and Ringo had no idea of the switch." George Martin stated, "Ringo Starr couldn't do a drum roll to save his life."
Ringo Starr was playing with a successful band in Liverpool with (Rory Storm & the Hurricanes).
Listen to the three versions of the "Love Me Do."
First listen to the Pete Best version.
I dont think Ringo was ever described as a powerhouse.
Was Pete best crying alligator tears when Paul made sure he got 5 million dollars royalties when he could have tied him up in court? You did alright pal for a forsaken beatle!
