  • CINCINNATI (WKRC) - What were you doing 40 years ago? Odds are good you were looking to stay warm if you were in the Tri-State. But maybe you were one of the ones that dared to walk across the frozen Ohio River on January, 18 in 1977.
Cincinnati resident Mark Clark recalls, "What do you say about 25 degrees below zero unless you've been to Minnesota? It was cold. It was brutal. It was very bad, and we still had wind at that point, so the wind chill was terrible."
Kathy Boutiere, another Cincinnati resident, said, "It was just unbelievable. There were so many people out on the ice, and it wasn't just flat ice. It was big chunks, so you really had to walk carefully."
Weather records show two of the top 10 all-time coldest high temperatures (-1° and 0°) and three of the all-time coldest low temperatures (-25°, -24°, and -21°) were set between January 16th and 18th, 1977. Records also show the river was frozen over 8 days that month.
"The hill coming down from Riverfront Stadium was all frozen, so people were sliding down the hill onto the ice. It was really different. It was like an ice amusement park or something," said Boutiere.
Some were on the riverfront to have fun on the snow and ice, but others more timid to walk on something they had never seen before.
Boutiere remembers, "It was creepy. It just didn't feel right. I shouldn't be out here. This isn't safe. This isn't really safe."
If you have photos of the frozen river back in 1977, share them with us on the Local 12 Facebook page, or by going to burst.com/local12.

I was in the 3rd grade watching this on the news. It was so cold , I remember trying to make it back to the house and watching my spit bounce off the ground. I was out of school for at least 2 weeks. 76/77 was the coldest year I can remember in my life.

I was 13 years old at the time. We drove downtown just to see the river when it was frozen. As we drove across the Suspension Bridge, the icebreakers were coming up the river so that the barges could resume their deliveries up and down the beautiful Ohio River. Seeing the river frozen was an impressive sight. Previously, the river froze in 1963. Since 1977, the Ohio River has not frozen at all. With global warming and climate change, we may never see it freeze completely over ever again.

I was 3 or 4 and my father took me down to the river when it was frozen. We walked over to Kentucky and walked back, it was crazy seeing all the people on the frozen river.

It was an awesome time. I was shoveling snow and making cold hard cash. Drinking hot chocolate, and not missing going to school.
