John Denver was an amazing Folk Singer when Folk Singing had all but died. He was classified as a Country Artist but make no mistake he was a classic Folk Singer. He was so underrated at the time when Rock Music was becoming Hard Rock and Country Music started becoming Country Rock. The World lost an amazing talent and a very unique voice the day that John Denver had his plane accident. Such a shame. He did so much for nature and educating people and No I'm not nature nut case, I just appreciated what this man did and I loved so many of his song and his voice.

I don't believe John Denver ever wrote a bad song. You really must listen to "Calypso." What a beautiful song! One feels so free-spirited when one hears it. He wrote it after he was invited by Jacques Cousteau to join him aboard the Calypso and he got a taste of living on the open seas and studying the creatures that live below. It clearly affected him in a very positive and beautiful way.

My husband always made fun of me living John's music. I made him go to a concert with me once.
I was enthralled the entire concert. Sato close that I swear I locked eyes with him at one point when tears were running down my cheeks from a song I particularly loved.
My husband showed little enthusiasm throughout.
But...on the way to the car he casually said " that is the best concert I have ever been to."
He was so very special...pure voice, sincere appreciation for those who came to see him so apparent. It was magical to see him!

I really can't proclaim a favorite John Denver song because they are all brilliant!
He comes from an era where nearly all artists had a distinctive voice and sound and he is no different.
You're right he was a supremely talented writer and performer.
I can listen to his songs over and over and they never get old.
We were all robbed of his talent far too soon.

my parents were in their 50's when they surprised me asking for me to take them to a John Denver concert. He was on a small raised stage in the middle of the crowd, slowly rotating so everyone could see. Incredibly warm, beautiful, and fun...a great memory for me

I had the privilege of seeing John Denver live at the Fox Theater in St. Louis in the mid-80s. It was a sell-out and a concert I will always remember. I went to this concert prior to a two-week vacation to Colorado which made it even more special. I was so crushed when I learned of his untimely death! What a loss! There will never be another John Denver.

When John's plane crashed in 1997, I felt a small piece of my childhood die. My mom would listen to him & Kenny Rogers when she cleaned the house when I was a child. I would hear her singing all his songs. "Rocky Mountain High" was the first song I learned to play when I self-taught myself guitar. What an amazing singer, artist, & storyteller. He was gone far too soon!

I got to see John Denver so many years ago I was in my twenties and now 60 it was in Worcester Mass I had the seat that was the very last row as high as you can possibly be away from the stage underneath an air conditioning system.
To this date its the best show I've ever seen in my life it was just him and his guitar his music and his story's it blew me away. I had a chance to go to another concert years it was sadly canceled due to a thunderstorm.

I saw John Denver in concert in 1975 or 76 in Norfolk Virginia. It was a concert "in the round" and when his band took a break, he stayed on stage with just his guitar, and kept on performing. The best concert I've ever been to.

I saw him live in the late 1970's. Having seen many concerts during this period, mostly rock, this was by far the most beautiful experience ever. The musicianship and vocals were the best I ever witnessed. 'Poems, Prayers, & Promises', 'Follow Me', and 'Rhymes and Reasons' are hidden gems.

I got to work a couple of his concerts and was backstage a lot. He was friendly to everyone he met his crew was also. He brought softball equipment with him so if there was a chance they would get a game going, along with that he was the only performer that I ever saw bring a ping pong table with him. Was great to see his live performance.

John Denver was a singer-songwriter & actor. He had so many great hits in the 70's-80's. Some of his signature songs were "You Fill Up My Senses", "Grandma's Feather Bed", "Fly Away", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", "Poems, Prayers & Promises", "Calypso", "Sunshine On My Shoulders" etc. John appeared in several films & television specials during the 70's-80's, including the 1977 hit "Oh, God!", in which he starred alongside George Burns.

I had the awesome privilege of seeing John Denver in concert back in the 70s near Philadelphia. It was in a large arena and he looked so small on the stage with just a couple back up musicians. They had three giant screens behind him that ran beautiful video of eagles, rivers, and the Rocky Mountains as he sang. That's all - no special effects needed. The most amazing thing I remember is that, when he sang, there was no screaming or craziness. Everyone was just quietly singing along with him on most of his songs. It was beautiful! I sure do miss his music and I thank you for playing it on your channel and for your kind comments.

Watch for some of his lesser known works as well. Poems, Prayers and Promises, This Old Guitar. Calypso (an anthem to the ship used by famed marine conservationist, Jacque Cousteau) and if you can handle it, Flying For Me. That's a tough one. He was to have been the first civilian in space. He had been chosen, and even started the training. Then a decision was made that the 1st civilian should be a teacher, not a celebrity. He was understandably terribly disappointed. Space was his dream and he'd come so close. We all, of course, know what happened to the teacher who took his place. So when he sings that "She was flying for me," it's not just a metaphor. She flew in his place -- and she died in his place, and he wrote that song in the immediate aftermath. It's a tough listen but it's beautiful.

I saw him 5 times at Red Rocks in Colorado (look up this outdoor venue!). I wouldn't trade those times for anything. He had remarkable presence with the crowd. The sound , the voice, the lyrics always touch my soul. Rocky Mountain High was made the official state song for Colorado. I miss him dearly.

I saw John Denver play many times. Most often at Blossom Music Center in Ohio. Perfect outdoor venue surrounded by woods. His voice was so clear, his lyrics so lovely. The only famous person I ever cried for when he died. He did leave so much music for us to enjoy.

I've been listening to John Denver since day early 70s. Listen to Thank God I'm a Boy. Then Listen to Boy in the Country. Thanks for your comments.

I grew up listening to John Denver and this song always makes me think of my father. When I was 8 years old we were on the stereotypical American family vacation driving cross-country from Chicago to Colorado in a station wagon with parents and 5 kids. Once we arrived, Dad immediately fell in love with Colorado and the Rocky Mountains and said the words "coming home to a place he'd never been before" was exactly how he felt. He eventually realized his dream of living there after he retired.
John Denver has so many great songs it's hard to choose, but I think you'd really enjoy "Calypso", especially if you're familiar with Jacques Cousteau and his underwater explorations as the song is a tribute (Calypso being Cousteau's research ship).

I saw John at the Nassua Coliseum on Long Island, NY back in the late 70's. He and his band played for an hour, then the band took a break and John played solo for at least a half an hour before the band came back out and they finished out the show together. Outstanding performance!
If I could recommend a couple of his songs to you to review I would go with "The Eagle and The Hawk" and "Whiskey Basin Blues".

What words can be said? Just outstanding. I am surprised that he didn't have a musician in the band that could do the background vocal like the studio recording, but this is just a minor point. You must listen to "Matthew" THAT is a deep track that is outstanding. Tells a great story!

This Wildlife Tour was his final tour and I was lucky enough to see him when the tour came to California. It was absolutely wonderful. There are several more videos from this tour that can be viewed. Please checkout “Sunshine on myShoulders”, “Calypso”, “Darcy Farrow”, “For You”, “Poem, Prayers and Promises”, “I Guess He’d Rather Be in Colorado”, and “Back Home Again”. They are all wonderful!

His songs were mostly about his life and his experiences. Such a great songwriter. Gone way too soon.

One of my greatest regrets is never getting to see him in concert. My favorite is Of Eagles and Horses, not well known but the passion in his voice is incredible.

Such an incredible entertainer! I love his voice, and his songwriting was amazing! I miss him! My favorites are "Some Days Are Diamonds" and "Perhaps Love", which is a duet he did with Placido Domingo. Beautiful!

Eagle and the Hawk is my favorite, have been a fan since the 70's. Seen him a dozen or more times. Funny story we had 4 roll center when he was at Pine Knob in Michigan. My sister and sister-in-law are fighting over binoculars. I he spotted them, stopped playing his song. Shook his head and giggled and smiled at both of them and started playing again. They stopped after that. My sister got to talk to him at one of his concerts, he asked a question about fish, and she she shook her head yes like she had the same thing happen, and he started talking to her. She was so surprised all she could manage to say was Yup! He was an amazing singer, writer, and man.

I've loved John Denver since the '70s. His music has a purpose and communicates important things. Saw him live in Houston, Texas in 1979 and had good seats. Only 20 rows back or something like that. Still have a picture in my scrapbook from that show. Saw him again years later at the Austin airport when he flew his LearJet in for a concert. Didn't get to speak to him but it was fun being right there in the general aviation terminal when he came in.

A poet. Your right, one of my favorite concerts the backup instruments didn’t arrive so he did the whole thing playing just 2 or 3 guitars himself. Wonderful.

I have loved every single John Denver song I have ever heard in my life and I am 51 years old my best friend from high school actually got to go see him in concert. I never had the opportunity to go see him in concert. There is one song that nobody has reacted to actually there’s more than one song of his that nobody has ever reacted to and I don’t know why those songs aren’t as popular but I absolutely love them. As much as the popular ones one of those songs is called Raven’s Child, and the other is a very long one called Fox fire, suite

I saw john Denver in Poughkeepsie NY in the 90's and his voice was mature and rich. He brought the house down when he sang "For You" a beautiful song. So glad I have those memories. He was the best!
