Dealers have to play the hand that the manufacturers deal them. I used to deliver gas to convenient store, when the price went thru the roof, I got blamed by the customers, I was called everything in the book accept an old milk cow. I was the scapegoat for the frustration they were feeling.

We purchased a $25,000 RV from Camping World in Olive Branch Mississippi, 1.5 years later we had a dry rotted tire that caused over $10,000 damage to our RV going down the interstate. After 6 months to repair it at their facility, this is how it was returned back to us. The main inlet water hose was never installed back to the the RV. It was completely missing. No hose to the water tanks. We had water going everywhere!!! All down the side of the RV and water sprayed all inside the RV. All on the fuse panel, cabinet, walls, floor and underpinning. This is not acceptable!😡 I will never buy anything from Camping World again!!!

Financing is the only reason people choose Big RV retailer’s.
People want the champagne on that beer budget. Then comes the sales pressure and not being able to say “no”
Service will only get worse because retention with the younger generation is very difficult. Therefore most of the employees will have very little experience.
    Good luck to all! 😀

I went to a Camping World to get some accessory and walked through the sales showroom. Every office had a customer and the overflow was out on the floor with sales people. I ran through a few units on the floor and was flabergasted to see the poor quality on display. Sagging ceiling material, loose trim everywhere, a closet door laying on a bed with a piano hinge with 1/8 inch screws that were suppose to hold it on but obviously didn't. Will the chickens ever come home to roost? I doubt it. What's that old saying? "There is a sucker born every minute". Too Bad

How are dealers getting away with this you ask? simply no accountability. Until that happens, which I do not see in the foreseeable future this will continue on for years. You can beat your head against the wall for so long before you have no choose but to accept it. The dealers know that.😩 my wife and I have been camping now for 37 years and have bought many campers, including one class A motor home. I honestly think the industry was better then.

I’m gullible because I drove over 200 miles to buy from a highly reputable small family owned dealership for my first purchase. They were very nice, gave me 10% off on everything other than the rv which was $2,000 less than everybody else out the door. Got a call the day after to ask how it towed with the curt independent suspension(they wanted to know honestly from a buyer perspective) and how the trip went (high wind). Got a card from them hand written by my salesperson. Didn’t push me to buy unneeded bs! The finance guy was surprised I didn’t ask for a bunch of free addons, well you don’t get hassled for bs when you are $2000 below everybody else. Give me a sewer pipe and some wheel covers my man!

For the last couple of years, they have had only 5 or 6 RV's on their mostly empty lot. But over the last couple of months, they've had a couple of dozen class C's and A's. They even have a couple of conversion vans, something they told me they didn't sell. (Maybe they are trade-ins?) They are overflowing with RV's for sale. Just an observation.

1 to 3 years old, used is the most economical way to go. The key though is researching the top 2 or 3 quality manufacturers once you have decided exactly what class and type you want. Then do some research and find a reputable inspector/mechanic to check it out. Don't waste your time on 95% of the junk manufacturers out there. Even the quality manufacturers are struggling to put quality units on the market.

I've found that relying on reviews is a tricky thing. Beware of reviews that sound too good, or too bad, or reviews made around the same time period.
Watch for key words or phrases that keep popping up. Some of these reviews are done by paid trolls, working for the competition.
One of the best ways to get a more honest take on an rv, is to drive around campgrounds and other places that rv'rs hang out at, find rvs made by the manufacturer you're interested in, and ask the owners questions.
Also look for RV's that were bought from the dealer you're going to use, and see what they have to say about the dealer, and service after the sale.
Take notes, because it can get very confusing after awhile.
Don't rely on reviews from dealer websites, they only use the good ones.
I also noticed a cute little trick at one chain dealer in Longview TX. They bought out a mom and pop that had really satisfied customers and they copied the good reviews for the former Co, and then put the new dealer name in the reviews.
So be careful on just using reviews.

I have a question regarding my insurance check made out to “Camping World Collision Center” for repairs to over $10,000 damage on my RV. We have a law suit in litigation due to water damages because they forgot to re-install our main water inlet hose. 😡Camping World told my insurance agent to make the check out to “Camping World Collision Center”. During discovery we have in writing from Camping World that states “Camping World Collision Center Does Not Exist.” 🤔 This got even more interesting after we found out the back of the check was signed by Camping World RV Sales. 🤨 Correct me if I’m wrong but this seems strange. I would like to know what are your thoughts and how I should handle this information.
Follow our case: “Austin vs Camping World “
Is this legal? Maybe they are just trying to make their shareholders happy by making their sales look better than they actually are. 🤔 That’s very interesting 🧐

I know these stories get more clicks on TH-cam than happy stories of satisfied rivers, but maybe once in a while you could deliver a story that is more the norm for rvers.

I remember going to Paris France and the tourist outside coffee shops and restaurants were overpriced and overall rude to the point you ask yourself how do they stay in business. It’s because every day a new tourist stops there and they don’t have to change. I think the same goes for the RV market in general are and think the same way. It’s sad but they don’t care because if that person doesn’t come back another in knowing first time RV buyer will come. They will think that because they are big and a chain everything will be better and that’s the never ending rub. That’s how I see it

  • @joelek589

Somewhere around 5 years of ownership, RV owners that bought brand new, NOW realize it's a serious money pit. The residual value if they try to sell on their own or worse yet trade it in sucks so bad, the owner wont make that mistake again. From top to bottom, the RV industry knows it's a one and done business model for the most part. One and done = good sales experience. But parts/service/warranty repair is often polar opposite.
It's been this way for DECADES. They are selling you a dream and a lifestyle. Dreams and lifestyles tend to be very expensive. Once the dream is over, the one and done business model looks for the next dreamer. Problem is, social media is shining so many truth lights on this industry, the dreamers are closing their checkbooks.

I would say that walking into just about any RV dealer can be a minefield, especially if you haven't done enough investigating and haven't completely thought through what you want, what is best for you and your family. And the real danger area is that finance guy - or gal! Don't let them talk you into useless addons, such as paint or fabric "protection" and especially extended warranties! What may be good for the dealer is, in all likelihood, not good for you the consumer! I still remember being talked into a paint "protection" application for our previous RV. The coach had been sitting on their lot, out in the weather, it was dirty when we first looked at it, it had the same dirt on it when we went to sign on the dotted line - so the "protection", if it was applied at all, was put on over dirt!

Found a slightly used 26' BH last fall from a small dealer in a nearby town. Spent a couple days mulling it over before I sat down to write out the check for payment in full. I've been hauling trailers around the Midwest for 40 years so I know what to expect. I got the idea that the first owners weren't quite so savvy and lost a 1/4 of their outlay when they traded it back in. I wish there was a way to wake people up.
Incidentaly I will be looking to this dealer for service parts and help with things beyond my knowledge. They earned my trust.

Camping World is a mixed bag. I have never bought an RV from them, but a couple of my son's buddies worked for them after college. There were good and bad stories. I use them occasionally for parts and accessories, and they have been good from that aspect. They are definitely on the pricey side, but sometimes when there is nothing else around, they can be a trip saver. Like I said before, I have bought my RV's used, and the last one was 3-years old and never used. Never had to deal with warranty claims, and I have fortunately been able to fix everything (all minor things) that has come up by myself. I think it boils down to those that have the most problems/complaints, are the least mechanically inclined, and have to have everything done for them. Like I always say.....RV-ing is a hands-on sport, and if you're not willing to get your hands dirty, it might not be for you...

Please stop with the franchising idea. It's a rip off for the consumer. The franchisor is the only winner.

That's why you have 2 eyes, 2 ears, and one mouth. Your suppose to look and listen twice as much as you talk. I've seen these people several times but they never listen and even worse is they dont look at what they are buying much less what they are signing.

Allan, good post and great advice. But, as I have written you before, I believe you should mention the names of the dealerships and /or campsites where fellow revers have had bad experiences so that other can avoid them. Please give me your thoughts???

I would add that you can’t call all Camping World locations as bad. Our local stores have very high ratings and many long term employees. But, I agree with buying from an independent dealer. We bought from Stoltzfus RV and marine in West Chester, PA. Our salesman has been there 37 years and the service department has similar long term employees. It’s a great dealership that’s employee owned and treats customers like family.

Luckily I watched and researched enough over 2 yrs to find the right Rv for us at the best price. Unfortunately a lot of people don’t do independent research. I was actually going to drive to Cheyenne Rv but they sold the one I wanted and actually got lucky and found a little better price and closer at Couch RV nation in Ohio. Thanks for all you info videos

09:03 Last fall I received a call from a couple wanting help with initial appraisal of some motorhomes they were looking at. It would be nice if those who are very confident about how well their RV's are maintained had actually done a stellar job of always maintaining them. The very best unit out of the short list of them that they had settled on looking at, all of which had owners that claimed they were well-maintained, had several maintenance-lacking problems. Most of these were in respect to areas and details that the owners may have had no awareness of at all, and even the new buyers thought were of minimal consequence--until, after buying it, it turned out that it was unable to make it through this first winter without a leak having gotten started into a closet area where it was able to do plenty of damage before being discovered. Most "well-maintained" claims have no particular definition and should be taken with a grain of salt.

I’ve been watching all kinds of RV stuff for years. Wouldn’t buy one unless was forced. Not many good stories. Junk. Now airstream and a few have better reviews, but houses are cheaper.

Was looking for our first rv @ CW...during the review of a selected unit for is to buy, I noticed they were charging me around $1800 for a "traded-in" extra inspection fee, in addition to the dealer prep fees...later during the dealings, I mentioned the unit was going to be a test drive for us and if we liked RVing, we would trade it back in and get one we really liked, newer and better than that used one. The seller told me, "Oh, we don't take trade-ins...? Huh? So why are you charging me an extra trade-in prep fee? Crickets...we bought from a private party...then I learn from the Wingman and already know, CW is NOT getting out business!

I love this channel. One of only a few I subscribe to. In some ways the honesty scares the heck out of me, while at the same time it’s encouraging. Interesting what’s been happening to Tiffin lately. Sad actually. Decided against a Tiffin for a Newmar but have to sell a few more aluminum cans! 😂. Living in central Florida there are some big RV dealerships. We have opted to work with Independence RV. Reviews look good, “zero” pressure and many of the employees and mechanics have been there for decades. Not sure you’ve heard of them but maybe someone else on here has. Be well.

Mr Wingman: once again your showing your ignorance. An Rv dealer is just like an auto dealer. But low and sell high. I’d be willing to bet you have never purchased an Rv at camping world. In my opinion they are a great starting point. A Hugh selection to chose and compare from. Yes there things to stay away from and questions that need to be asked, weather a small or big dealer. But to say people are ignorant by going to a big dealer shows your level of knowledge.

Bought my RV from a family owned RV dealership in Grass Valley CA. It is 2 1/2 hrs from my home in the east bay area....Am very glad i did so....Have no complaints about their business..Spent the last 5 yrs before retirement in 2018 researching what i wanted in a Class C Rv....Well, Ive got it minus a couple additional things id like to add to it....I also researched where i wanted to get it from....I did and got it there...Over 5 yrs and 46,000 later , im a happy camper....All im worrying about now is because i know its coming soon because it hasnt yet is repairs ??? Uggghhh...Cant complain though because been very lucky so far...Only thing i use Camping world for is preventive maintenance/service work on things such as generator or slides or oil changes etc...as its more convenient because they are a lot closer than my RV dealership is...Even had my roof resealed at the dealership as i felt it was the smarter thing to do....
