  • Recently, the Apple Music streaming service announced that it would start streaming lossless music files as early as June 2021. Shortly before the Apple announcement, Spotify announced that it would begin streaming lossless music files. Up until now, both services has been streaming lossy files. But what's the difference between lossless and lossy? And is lossless really that big of a detail. In this video, Doug Schneider explains the differences and tells you why lossless is a good thing, although it's certainly not a new thing.

    Good content. I like the sheet of paper analogy!

      Great to hear! Yes, internally at SoundStage!, the paper analogy went over well as well.

    One unfortunate situation is some mobile providers make you pay more when you want to stream CD quality. I had Sprint and when I set my Tidal app to stream CD quality when using cell service it wouldn’t stream unless I paid more, it could sense I was trying to stream CD quality music. So, some companies are dinging you even though you have unlimited data and they have the tech to handle it!

      Very interesting - we wonder how widespread that is

    The big revolution will come when we can stream lossy audio via future version of Bluetooth or anything like Airplay to headphones or airpods if we talk about apple devices. All the codecs right now are lossless, even Sony LDAC or AptxHD. Maybe we can see also betters DACs inside our phones and laptops, now we need a external DAC too in order to get better performance. And thanks for this video, for the people who dont have a clear concept about lossless and lossy is a great video

    i was unaware lossless decompresses like mqa does. you sure about that?

    • @soundstagenetwork
      @soundstagenetwork  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We are unsure what your comment refers to. MQA is a type of lossy compression, but it wasn't mentioned specifically in this video. Please let us know more.

      @@soundstagenetwork when you "fold" a flac, you can't "unfold" it.

      @soundstagenetwork  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@etm3398 We are still unclear. The analogy with the paper was showing that with lossless compression, you can take something large, bring it to something smaller, then bring it back to the exact same size again with no degradation. Folding the paper over (deliberately with no sharp crease) then unfolding it again was to illustrate shrinking down without damage. This was not about MQA. It was about how lossless compression works, in a very basic way.

    • @etm3398
      @etm3398 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@soundstagenetwork well what you were describing in the video is accurate if it were about mqa and not flac especially using the paper folding as your example. mqa can unfold. flac cannot. what's lost through flac compression is lost forever. it will forever be different from the source material even if normal hearing can't detect the difference.

    • @soundstagenetwork
      @soundstagenetwork  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@etm3398 We have to respectfully disagree. FLAC and ALAC and others are "lossless" compression schemes. In lossless compression schemes no data gets lost. It comes back 100% intact. This can be verified over and over again simply by analyzing files. We did not discuss MQA at all, but MQA is not lossless.

      Many people don't know what lossless versus lossy is. We feel education on these topics is important.
