  • This video shows you how to diagnose and repair a cylinder misfire on a VW Tiguan (model year 2011). The same procedure applies to other model year Tiguan vehicles. Th repair ultimately required a replacement of spark plug coils (and while doing the job also the spark plugs). The engine codes that you will typically see with this issue are P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 - cylinder misfire detected.

    Very informative video! I really like that you presented another option that is very easy to perform, takes a limited amount of time, and it is absolutely free! The added bonus of doing this coil swap experiment will help to, not only isolate the problem, but it also will reinforce what the code scanning tool’s determination is stating to be the root cause of the malfunction. I’ve watched a few videos about this issue and you are the first one to provide a second option to try that will prove the scan results as valid. Great tip! I have come to the conclusion that this fault code is caused by several things, and it can be from one item or from a combination many items. These items are spark plugs, coil pack(s) and/or coil pack electrical plug in connector(s), oil separator, (similar to a PCV valve/crank case valve), rear main seal ( where the air is drawn through by the oil separator), and faulty valves,( which are a specific and unique type that costs around $50 U.S. per valve and there are 8 valves in all.(price is not exact at time of post) The valve guides appear to be made of a unique material as well, and were not available to be purchased individually from VW Germany.[Note: This info regarding valve guide availability was per a popular YT auto repair channel episode which was over a year old at the time of this post. I have no further info on possible current availability] Substituting brass in its place only fixed the problem temporarily due to the rapid deterioration of the soft material often lasting less than 6 months. The best, and the cheapest option, is to just buy a new head in general, instead of having the current one rebuilt.

      Hi!!!
      My 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 is giving the SAME exact codes (misfire random, cylinder 3 misfire, and cylinder 4 misfire)
      The mechanic JUST replaced all 4 spark plugs and 4 coils yesterday.
      The misfire codes started happening today after he “fixed” all spark plugs and coils.
      What do I do now?

    Coil #4 was the bad one. Should of switched 4 for number 1 to confirm 4 was the bad coil. Save diagnose time & accurate problem solution. Very rare spark plugs will cause check engine light due to wear.New coils & spark plugs ALWAYS a good idea depending on mileage but if on a budget coil 4 would of stopped the misfire till replacement of 3 coils & 4 spark plugs. FYI. Keep Up The Great Work

    The MB II tool, online says it’s for Mercedes. Did you have to do something specific to get it to work with VW?

    I have a P0304 code misfire cylinder 4, i changed out all spark plugs and coils, cleared code and 4 days later code is back. Any suggestions?

  • @donzhu4996

    When I erase the code and didn't get new code immediate like you. I use torque pro to clear the code. I have to drive several days to get the engine light comes again then to read the code. Is that because I don't have the scan tool like you?

    • @bpetertube
      @bpetertube  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that the code reader is the issue. I do not know for certain, but I would suspect that in your case after a few days of driving the part that is working most of the time temporarily does not perform as expected which triggers a new error code.

      No it came back on because after replacing plugs & coil it needs a throttle body Service & then erase codes so the computer (ecm) re-learns or simply disconnect the positive & negative cables for about 1/2 hour & it will automatically default to relearn after all parts installed & throttle body Service.

      I would recommend taking it back. If you had no codes before the service and the issue ends up being related to the replaced parts, I would expect the mechanic to resolve it at no charge. Some of the possible causes: a bad spark plug, a bad coil, a bad connection between the coil and the spark plug, or the coil and the electrical system. I am assuming in my comments that the replacement parts were the manufacturer approved parts.

      @@rebeccafieldsofdreams8428 I got the spark plugs, coils and pcv valve replaced . But then the check engine light came back on a couple days later . Turns out it needed the carbon scraped from the intake. That fixed it!
