Prélude in A minor, from the second 'English' Suite by Johann Sebastian Bach
Composed sometime between 1715-20, the second 'English' Suite by Bach begins with this elegant, cheerful, simple and yet exuberant Prélude. Why the suite was termed 'English' remains to be unclear. Bach's first biographer, Forkel, speculated that these pieces were possibly dedicated to an English aristocrat, whose name is not known.
I am constantly fascinated by the two-part writing in this work wherein simultaneous, interwoven and independent strands of melodies unfold like a geometric puzzle. I hope you enjoy my rendition of it... which comes with my own improvised cadenza! 😊
