From Wisconsin with a few friends and we were at the race. Sitting in turn 4 had a bird’s eye view of the shocking Petty crash. Amazed and delighted wasn’t hurt. Great race
Crazzy how close the drivers sat to the door with ZERO head and neck restraint/ rest.......fun fact this is the first daytona 500 with the BLACK NUMBER 3 GOODWRENCH MACHINE......Greatest paint scheme of all time
I didn't aporeciate at the time how good this broadcast team was. All the telemetry and fancy graphics they have now can't make up for it. Also, that bit about JD McDuffie takes a different tone, knowing what would happen a few years later.
Most fans know him either for holding the record for the most starts without a win, or for being the penultimate race fatality in the Cup Series. I know him for being statistically one of the best drivers to never win a race.
@@roncoobs AIDS from (supposedly) heterosexual conduct. NASCAR faked a positive drug test with the same dude who was found guilty of faking a bunch of NFL players tests at the leagues request. Ruined his livelihood and rest of short life and swept all evidence under the rug because 99% of all people infected by HIV back then were homos. They took his license for his last hurrah attempt at Daytona in 1988. he sued. He won. But NASCAR would only give him his license back if he gave them his lifelong medical records....becAuse somehow THAT would prove he wasn't on drugs (???)....but would also reveal his AIDS. Something he never "came out" to anyone about other than his immediate family + Rick Hendrick as far as I know. You could write a book on him. In fact, quite a few have. Heck, you could write a movie about him. Ever seen "Days Of Thunder?" The learning character was based on Tim Richmond. I put the first part of a really good doc about him on my Vimeo channel with the same name. Check it out before they take it down!
I remember watching the race and was happy that Richard wasn't hurt seriously, listening to these drivers talk, I realize now how much how much just how much the mindset has changed!!
Best era of NASCAR 1950s - mid 2000s luv that Skoal Bandit #33 driven by Harry Gant,Bobby Allison Miller Gold Draft Buick race car & #44 Sterling Marlin Sunoco Oldsmobile nice looking paint schemes.
You literally cut out one of the best sequences of racing the race had. The sequence where Ken Squire says "Look at this tremendous assault by Earnhardt!!!" while Bonnett, Earnhardt, and, Waltrip ( with Baker in the draft) battle for the lead...What a total screw up!!!

The 17 started vapor locking and fouled a plug after running through some of the oil dry they used on the track late In the race. Before that he had the 12 covered

I really enjoy watching these old races.

Echo that

Boring ass scheme

Fast Forward 36 Years and NASCAR would award Bobby Allison his 85th Career Win by Validating his 1971 Win at Bowman Gray Stadium.
It's about dam time
🏁🏁Love this Broadcast team, really enjoyed!!!!!!!!🏁🏁

Notice NASCAR removed all mentions of Tim Richmond from the begining of the CBS telecast.
What a shame especially now knowing the facts.....
What exactly happened with him? I can’t find anything 🤦♂️

1988. One of my favourite Daytona 500 of all time apart from many others.
Bill started this race in the rear… won the title
What a finish the good ole days of AMERICAN STOCK CAR RACING
Alan Kulwicki was not amused with Mike Joy...
Back when there was actual racing, the way it should be. Interesting to see DJ's first 500, also.
its nice to see the new cars mix in with the old body style cars in this race

J.D McDuffie got killed at Wakins-Glen a few years after this race. Bobby Allison practically built his race cars .
Were red flags not a thing yet in 88? They ran under caution for 20 laps after Pettys crash!
Red flags were a thing
Heck I've seen short track races where hours were spent under caution trying to figure out a scoring error before electronic scorinng

This Is Bobby Allison Final Win Of His Career Before His Crash At Pocono Raceway And Career Ended
The 2 Skoal cars being different Manufacturers!!! 😳🤯
They ended up that way, too. From 1993-1995, the #1 Skoal car was a Ford, and the #33 Skoal car was Chevy.
No different than the 2 monster cars with gibbs and shr in Xfinity a couple years ago or when Austin Dillon and truex has the bass pro schemes
