  • Hey guys, here is the compilation of footage from the previous blog series on building a large chopper knife. A few key features we go over: grinding a fuller, a convex grind and a few tips on handle shaping.
    This knife is currently for sale here: homesteadknive...
    Check out the previous vlogs of this build in these links below.

    About Simple Little Life:
    This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
    Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
    Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

    I absolutely agree with what you said I myself did not drawl out the knife I am making i’ve literally been shaping it at random and it’s come out pretty well but I’m at the handle stage in my randomness and I’m looking for good ideas because I don’t wanna mess this part up lol

    Where do you buy your belt grinders?

  • @survivalofthefittest409
    @survivalofthefittest409 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That is pretty much my version of a perfect '1 tool option'. I say pretty-much because i would want a finger-choil in something that big..but thats just me. You have a working hammer pommel there (with nice jimping as well), which i *LOVE,* I hate silly spikes that you're never gonna be able to use. A really nice 90% spine, good jimping, excellent handle contours (also hate blocky square scales), convex grinds..which is a superior grind in-general..but makes complete sense for a knife like this. Love the fuller as well. Good steel choice. Aesthetically pleasing (which is of course the most important part of any blade :D ).
    You did everything right on this blade, *color me impressed,* and somewhat covetous lol...and by somewhat i mean completely.
    Cant believe anyone would thumbs-down this!
    *Great* job man !!

    I was sceptical that you didn't forge the shape, then I was sceptical about the fuller running out the end of the blade, then I was sceptical about your choice of scale material, then I was sceptical about about the angular design of the handle, then I was filled with admiration for the end result. Bravo,sir!

    Originally such groves where meant for strength and better use of the material. In a sword less steel could be used, a fuller would then give width and strength. Moving the material. Grinding it is removing material, giving a lack of strength, not as important in this instance, but we often se Vikings swords with grinded fullers breaking. Nice job.

    Little tip for starter makers... If you have a large knife you like draw round it multiple times on separate sheets of paper with a pencil and design your own from it rub parts out and add idea's until happy then copy that to new blank sheet and do same without loosing first ones you liked to get further ideas and directions to build on.

    This served as great inspiration for a knife I’ve designed. I don’t have anywhere to make it, so it’ll be relegated to the sketchbook until I can make it a reality. Started calling it the Civ-Mod Bolo because I’ve wanted a bolo but no one makes it like I want it. So I decided to try to make it myself when I can

  • @BADger210
    @BADger210 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Being a good knife maker takes technique, for people to ask for your templates is just like a reference. Does not mean they don’t have creativity or lack any other skill for this endeavor. For beginners, its great to ask for templates because they can concentrate on forging or stock removal techniques more. Obviously people should always design they’re own blade at some point but people always want lol nice work👏🏻

    I'd like to see that knife in action. How do you like your electric oven? It looks way easier to clean up your blade after using that for heat treating. I'm using a propane forge and keeping the blade in constant motion to prevent the heat from being concentrated in one spot. It works well, but the clean up afterwards is pretty labor intensive.

      Hi, there are different types of band saw , wood cutting, butcher( carcasses) or metal cutting among others, a metal cutting bandsaw will be slower and more suitable for cutting flat stock, I use a Clarke cbs 45 md and put it vertical, and buy a bi-metal blade rather than carbon, I hope than helps
