The only ones I've seen the inside of is the ones I bought they were already taken apart and given up on or a basket case then you get to learn about it all
I bought a 1982 XL 185S today with 420 original miles. Was in a barn in Maryland under a cover for 40 years. It's like new and yes, it started and ran perfect.
If you haven’t checked out a TH-cam site named “Classic Octane” please do. He is rebuilding old CB’s from 350cc to the 750cc. He also is working on other brand’s but makes most of his money rebuilding 70’s Honda’s.
I like this type of casual video, don't understand the unwatchable comment. This is a great bike and it won't depreciate like a new bike ,it will always be worth more then you paid. Keep up the great content.
My first bike was the xl125s version of this bike. It was my Dad's bike and when I turned 15, he gave it to me. I got my motorcycle license on it and drove it to school my senior year. I'm actually thinking about buying another one now (maybe the 185 for a little more power) for nostalgic purposes.
I bought this same bike and an XL 500S in 1979. My girlfriend and I trailered them from CA to Anchorage, AK behind the truck of the guy we were going to work for got the summer, the they went by boat to the Nushagak bay. We rode them on the beaches and across the muskeg as far as we could for the summer. When it was time to return home, it ended up being too expensive to ship them, so we flew them back to Anchorage and stayed at a friend's house while we outfitted them. We took off and went north through Denali Park, to Fairbanks and then above the Arctic circle before turning around and heading south. We traveled unpaved and logging roads as much possible, but also highways when we needed to.
We spent five weeks on the bikes and even brought a newly squired three month old (when we left Anchorage) kitten all the way back down to Northern California. Great trip, which sparked a life long love of adventure motorcycling.
Had a new 1979 XL100s back in Jr. High. Wide open the speedo read 62. Downhill with the wind behind me seen 70mph. Traded that bike in on a 71 Road Runner. Great memories.
I remember a college friend had one of these in 1980. At that time I longed for an XT500, a bike I finally acquired three years later. I love the period dash on the 185. It's actually all you need. If the bike had been stored in the dark, the tyres would not have degraded and would have been useable. Great, flat bench seat. Keep it stock. It's a classic. Great video.
I just bought one of these last night. It's in really good, but not quite mint shape. 2200 miles and same original tires are dry rotted. Runs really well and looking forward to having an around town bike with gas prices so high right now.
I have one just like it, also with original tires. I put hundreds of miles on it trail riding every week. I recommend always running non-ethanol gas in these older vehicles; the rubber components weren't designed to withstand corrosive ethanol.
i had same exact bike from 1983 to 1985,, paid 650.00 for it and sold it for 500.00 , put on approx 2500 miles , down hill top out at 70mph ,,1st gear was low enough to climb most hills, my first of many bikes for next 40 yrs, approx 65 mpg, ran out of gas while down a hill and rolled into gas station at bottom of hill, lol ,sweet memories of one's first bike, make sure you run bike often,,gaskits on that bike dry up and will leak,,good luck and best wishes
Beautiful.I bought a brand new 1979 XL250s back when I was 18. Comfortable and actually looked like a motorcycle. Twin shocks, nice flat wide well padded seat, the gas tank actually looks like a motorcycle gas tank, not one of those ugly modern "pyramid" shaped gas tanks where the seat runs right up the back of the tank. YUK. They knew how to build motorcycles back then. It was so much nicer than anything you can get today. Back then they were called "dual purpose" bikes. Sadly it was Honda that started the "dual sport" thing when they came out with their short lived NX series bikes in the late '80s, and called them dual sport bikes. Now a "dual sport" bike is an MX bike with lights and no seat.
Had one just like that in 1981, but mine also had rev counter. My daily rider to Polytech college and running around the african bush. Slow but a lovely bike, perfect for a 1st bike.
Awesome bike. I just picked up the baby brother version. The 1979 XL75. It’s been fun to get it dialed in and zip around the neighborhood. Almost all my lights were removed so I’m sorting out that still but it runs great.
Clean bike, owned one in the early 90’s. Great stand on the pegs bike off road. It always had enough power in the dirt. I too would happily pay $3000 for it. Great first bike to learn on. Keep it forever. I traded mine for a Yamaha BW200. Yes BW not TW. Enjoy and stay safe.
Super nice bike you have there! I just acquired a 1985 xl185s and she is going to need some TLC, but it was FREE, so I will do what I can to get her back street worthy and appealing to the eyes! Thanks for posting your video!
I have a 1982 version sitting in my basement. I bought it 18 years ago from a guy who only put 1300 miles on it. It was perfect. Then my son wanted to ride it on his mom's acreage. I got it back a few years later battered and beaten. :( Still trying to find turn signals and a headlight for it. Parts are not easy to find. Brings me back to my first bike, a new1972 Yamaha 125cc Enduro.
well worth it IMO... you are a good dad and you were able to let your son get into riding. Stop worrying about that old bike and get out and ride with your son.
@@jamesbarrick3403 nothings better than riding with family, I plan on getting my grandson into riding if my daughter doesn’t kill me for getting him a bike.
@@jamesbarrick3403 I bought him a 1980 Xr100 at the same time. It was delivered in 5 boxes. I had to put it together without him seeing. Gave it to him on his 10th birthday. Teaching him how to use the clutch was traumatic, for both of us. We spent a lot of time riding together. Now he has moved to Texas, and we can't ride together anymore. But he has kept his love of bikes and has a couple in his garage. The XR is still in my basement. Good times.
That's awesome! My very first bike was a 1979 Honda XL185S as well, although it was in 1987 and it was not even close to being in that good of shape. I haven't been without at least one motorcycle since then. I did not have a man bun though.
Greetings from South Africa. Nice bike. I bought a blue one, same yellow and black decalls, new in 1981. Only diffence, rear shocks were black and it had a rev counter.
Interesting old Honda. I noticed it had the decompressor cable next to the exhaust valve to make kick start easy. Those can be hard to adjust correctly without access to a manual - best to go loose rather than too tight, etc. If the front forks need fixing, also check the rear shocks to make sure they are good enough to last until you can get replacements. Those old bikes were easy on the fuel unless you tried to ride it like you stole it... A completely stupid idea because they were low powered anyway. The bike will be good enough for an around town commute, to/from collage/Uni and a weekend get away with light camping gear and fishing gear. On the maintenance side of things, some of those old Honda's did not have replaceable oil filters but they had a strainer wire thing and a centrifuge thingy to keep the oil clean. Check out the manual and grab some Silastic or similar because gaskets for that old old bike maybe non-existent.
Definitely not this one. It's small single cylinder and I promise you they are just as rough as a modern day comparison. You're thinking about anything 4 cylinders or more
wwoww nice bike,same old as my yamaha l2s 1979,2stroke 100cc bike,but its got a 220000km now,still original engine and 4 speed gear,still got 108 kph top speed,with a lot of smoke hahaha,i got it for just US$120

This is probably okay for a play bike, but the brake and suspension design is really dated. Even in the day, the better twin shock designs were further up the arm. The shock travel is also long , so more heat from friction.
