    Good advice. Thx. By the way, even Toyota Camrys benefit from a transmission oil change every 40,000 miles. The manufacturers are greatly misleading people about the service life of the transmission oil especially in hot climates that encourages oil oxidization.

Yesterday it showed a transmission fault of P1732 and the mechanic says it needs a new transmission. Any thoughts? I regularly service my car and it has never been driven hard but I still got transmission issues. I read that the fault is caused by displacement sensors in the valve body, is this repairable or does the entire transmission need to be replaced? It's a 2011 Panamera 4

    How much does it cost to change the transmission fluid in this type of car?

    • @hellbent7066
      @hellbent7066 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it's almost $2,000 at the dealer. But that's because the mark-up is ridiculous. You'll need 10 liters of PDK fluid that cost $20 a liter on the internet but the dealer charges $70 a liter. The dealer will charge $350 for a $49 oil pan. You're already up over $1,000 and they haven even started doing any work yet. Then add computer time and 4 hours labor at $190 an hour and you're at $2,000. But you can do a simple drain and fill yourself for about $350 but you have to buy a $140 pump to get the new oil in.

    • @taylor315

      I just had the PDK serviced in my Macan and it was $500 at the dealership

    • @hellbent7062
      @hellbent7062 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@taylor315 Wow! That's extremely cheap for Porsche. Are you absolutely sure they did a complete PDK flush? It sounds like all they did was check it and maybe top it off a little. There are several different types of PDK service but for a complete job, the Fluid alone from a Porsche dealer will cost more than $500. What's the breakdown on your service bill? How much did they charge you for the new PDK oil pan? Its usually $350. How much did they charge for each bottle of PDK fluid? That's usually around $70 each. How many quarts of fluid did they charge you for? How many hours of labor? You might want to call and double check what kind of PDK service did they actually do because you must do a PDK Flush between 40,000 and 60,000 miles or else your transmission will developed problems down the road that's too late for a flush to fix. At that point they will no longer reccomend a flush and tell you theres nothing they can do. Then they'll reccomend you just to drive it till it breaks and buy a new one. So dont skimp on those PDK fluid flush intervals. Not worth having to replace a $20,000 transmission. Or Maybe you shouldn't call them because they may tell you the made a mistake and heavily undercharged you. Hell, just doing a re-adaptation with the PIWIS tester can cost more than $500. Maybe your PDK transmission is different that a Panamera PDK? You cost is simply not the norm. I did a simple drain and fill on my Panamera PDK myself and I got 11 bottles of PDK fluid for just under $300 and that was only half the amount needed for a full Flush and that was less than a 3rd of what the dealer charges for the same fluid. Sorry this is so long but I just don't want you to end up needing to replace that transmission because you got the wrong type of PDK service.

    • @taylor315
      @taylor315 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@hellbent7062 Yea it was a full 60k service. The PDK was actually starting to slip cuz I was a little over 60k miles, but they had my car for 2 days cuz it has to be cold and the special filling process. But when I got it back it was back to normal! It might’ve been $700, I can’t remember, it was like 3 months ago. But it’s good as new now so I’m not complaining 😅

      PDK fluid is good for 60k miles. If you want to change is early (like every 40k miles instead) that's the safest bet but anything more is overkill. You'll just be throwing away $700 worth of perfectly good PDK fluid. And you'll just be wearing out your oil pan bolt hole threads faster from constantly retorqing the bolts and replacing the oil pan.

    Damn! I'm way past due on transmission fluid change. Like 15k miles past due. Watching this video is terrifying. Luckily I haven't had any problems or fault codes yet. Probably because I dont push it hard often. Maybe 3 or 4 times a year at the most. I'm about to order a $80 fluid Evacuation/Dispenser pump and a dual beam temperature gun and swap out that fluid ASAP. I hope that's all I have to do? Otherwise, if it's more complicated than that, I will have probably have to bite the bullet and take it to the Porsche dealer and let them rip me off but I guess that's better than a 10k dollar repair bill.
    Update: Sadly, I didn't make it. I got the PDK service done too late. I eventually got a AWD fault at 89k miles that couldn't be pinpointed or cleared. They said it might be just the valve body they could do for $5k but it might not fix it and I would still need a new transmission. Couldn't find a independent shop within 100 miles. Didn't want to take a chance on a junkyard transmission. Ended up biting the bullet. Got a new Transmission installed with zero miles and a 2 year warranty for $20k... ouch! Thank god my pharmaceutical business is booming. Just kidding lol. My best advice is dont get this kind of car if you can't afford to replace the transmission.

      @@richardgolonka7585 I understand your fear and now that I had to replace the transmission, I have literally learned a valuable lesson. I will be sure to change the PDK fluid on time 🤣. Although it is only required every 60k miles I will do it every 40k to 50k miles. Changing it out every oil change you will only be throwing away $700 worth of good PDK fluid every time and you will also be wearing out your oil pan bolt holes faster due to the constant replacement of the PDK oil pan. However, you are free to do whatever makes you feel safer.

    • @richardgolonka7585
      @richardgolonka7585 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hellbent7062 I would imagine an oil pan replacement is cheaper than a transmission, if indeed it did ever go. One would think that pan bolt hole could do 20 insertions/re-insertions vs. 6. That is a huge repair bill though, that sucks, seriously. But I am considering one and would probably just eat the cost and change it twice a year. I have been maintaining saabs for years and honestly, repair bills annually are sometimes getting to porsche level (but on 8 thousand dollar cars lol).

      Actually Phil is correct. It is not as tedious and complicated as he makes it out to be. The computer is doing all the real work. Ask him what's the hardest part to do on a simple transmission flush and calibration? The answer is...If it doesn't need parts, the hardest part is probably unscrewing the fill plug and swapping out the oil pan. The computer does the rest. You are being taken advantage of because you dont have the PIWIS Tester and he knows what buttons to press on it and the customer does not. They make their money off people's ignorance. That's why he dont respond to legitimate questions. I was told by a mechanic that it was complicated to change out the front shocks on a Panamera so that's why they charge over $3K per side. I did it myself for $670 in 3 hours because I had access to the information on TH-cam which turns out to be very simple. Thank god for TH-cam how-to videos. The enemy to corrupt greedy mechanic shops. That don't want to help people to learn to do for themselves and save money so they make you think it's so hard tedious and complicated that you have to let them do it for you for ungodly amounts of money.

      @@desmomotodesmomoto2033 Lol! That's Absolutely True! But why try to make all the money off one person? Spread it out. You can make the same amount of money by reducing cost and increasing clientele. With the "information is money" mentality you can never help or educate anyone unless you charging them money or looking for a profit like a goddamn Ferengi. There is no shortage of idiots available in this world that dont want information. They are ignorant by choice and prefer to get beat out of their money and pay $600 for a $75 oil change because they're too lazy to do it themselves. So charge them! But for everyone else, it's ok to make a decent living without taking advantage of people. All I'm saying is charge people a fair and reasonable price. There's nothing reasonable about a $600 oil change because the reality is, overcharging people for car repairs is the main reason why many people seek to learn to do it themselves (Thank you TH-cam tutorials) and when the mechanic starts losing business, its his own damn fault for being greedy. Thats the principle of "Cause and Effect".

      @@hellbent7062 i think mechanics who specially working on special cars like Porsche charging more for oil change because, its is more labor intensive and also they charge for their overall experience on these cars, which takes years of learning and also talent, and special tools they need to do the job, its not just oil change, its the whole trade.
      What he does in these videos is sharing information also that I appreciate. I look at the big picture, but customers should do research before leaving their cars also.

    When you talk to spoiled western people it's incredible tedious process, but in 3rd world countries we do this in our own garages :) Theory of relativity for the win :)
