      He was always my favorite of the Scorpions guitarists, and this is my favorite of their songs. The Scorpions, a band that over the years had more guitar talent in it than any band has a right to. This is the song I recommend to people to show them how a brilliant guitarist transcends mere metal shredding and takes it to a higher plane. Ulrich Roth, always a class act.

    • @Andy000Burns
      @Andy000Burns 8 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      +PGeorge61 Much more so!!! Page and Clapton inspired a plethora of insipid, derivative, and conventionally boring pentatonic wanna-be rock players who've done nothing but drive the genre into cliche-dom. Uli took the psychedelic vibe of hendrix into a world that was never before heard. Alternate picking over strings, the phyrgian scale, unconventional chord voicing's , the guy really was the first shredder ever.

      Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin led the way in the 1970s with styles that incorporated aggressive speed, technical precision, and harmonic sophistication.
      Their technically virtuosic and complex styles of music have been cited as an influence by a number of prominent rock and metal musicians.

    • @tsbflyingv
      @tsbflyingv  8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I don´t think you´re wrong, but those guys are not rockers. Among rockers, the use of minor scales along with rock/classical mix began with Uli, Blackmore, Schenker and Jan Akkerman. And Uli was definitely the one out of those four that went deep in that path

    • @roguenation
      @roguenation 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Tomas SB
      The jazz fusion guitarist's speedy rock-oriented guitar solos demonstrated to many rock metal/guitarists that they didn't have to be slaves to the pentatonic scale, legato technique, and the 1st and 3rd fingers of their fretting hand.

      Yes like a true jazz or classical musician - you always resolve or return to the main melody to tell your bandmates you are about to end.

    • @bpabustan
      @bpabustan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Joshua Mezza you basically quote the main melody again to indicate others you are done improvising.
      If you listen to a typical jazz recording, the track usually quotes the main melody at the end in order to finish the track off

    Uli Jon Roth is a living legend to professional guitar players and composers. His career path always steered away from popular music into experimental, progressive and psychedelia, so he's not nearly as well known as he should be. In addition to being so in tune with his instrument that he can pull of complex sweeps with no effort while grooving in 'the pocket', he's also musically correct, in the classical composition sense, with no falsetto shortcuts.

    There is more 'taste' in the opening of Sails than just about any other guitar lead in all of rock history. Fact.

      Tja, nunmehr 59, seit ich 17 bin Gitarrist, langer, steiniger Weg, weil ich nie viel Theorie wollte, NUR spielen. Nach 42 Jahren Spieler-ei wissen meine Finger bei Solos ENDLICH wohin. Ziel erreicht!
      (Akkorde kenne ich 4 oder max.5, 2 Power - Chords, der Rest wird ganz einfach
      kapodasterisiert!
      Nu, in doch schon gesetzterem Alter, höre ich, dass jemand das freie, wahrhaft LYRISCHE Gitarristen-Tum, ja, doch VOLLKOMMEN (drunter kann ich's nicht sagen, weil das griech. Wort f. vollkommen bedeutet soviel wie " ins Schwarze treffen"/Bogen-Sport. Und das macht Uli. Er holt die Musik in einem wirklich kreativen Akt/Quanten-Tunnelung aus dem Nichts...was nur die Allerallerwenigsten können...)
      Und damit kann ich mich endlich tiefen-entspannen. Den Job macht schon der Beste!
      Heisst, ich kann voll nach Herzens-Lust weiter SPIELEN, und mich um gar nix kümmern, (ausser endlich um ne Band, nach 29 Jahren Pause...). Besser geht's doch net!
      Weiss einer, wo hier auf YT das Live-Video ist, mit der gerissenen Saite, einer gut-grausam verstimmten Gitarre und einem reziprok dazu ZEN-gelassenen Uli Jon Roth, aus dieser Kak-O-Phonie mal eben ein grenzgängerisches Spontan-Meisterwerk-
      Solo aus dem Hand-Gelenk zaubert...?
      (Oder bin ich grad gar ZU BREIT und es ist eben DIESES Video hier?🤔.) Egal
      Ich hab sowas noch NIE gehört, aber ich glaube, so wollen doch klammheimlich die Meisten spielen, aber keiner tut's/traut sich...
      Na, und nach einem zweiten Live-Clip mit einer ebenfalls nicht ganz MONK-sauber, aber SEHR GUT gestimmten Gitarre, hatte er mich dann... nämlich gerade eben!
      Bei dem Intro hab ich nur gedacht: besser geht's ja net.
      Nu hab ich nach Jahrzehnten ENDLICH mal 1 ECHTEN Guitar-Hero/God !
      Go on Uli,
      forever & ever !

      Guys, Uli owns Jimi Hendrix favorite strato, he played Strato in his early days, so it´s safe we can say he is the master of the stratocaster (although he is much cooler as master of the sky guitar!)

    Magia y poder únicos en cada nota que acaricia el Maestro Uli. Destila clase por los cuatro costados. No solo virtuosismo, el cocktel Roth se basa principalmente en talento, unas composiciones inspiradísimas y mucha, mucha pasión.
    Llamadle antiguo o que se quedó en el pasado... en los 60-70's y llamadle hippie o Hendrix blanco... pero, desgraciadamente, pronto nos quedaremos sin genios como el, sin guitarristas de la vieja escuela.

    No guitarist strikes me the way Uli does, this cat is a gift to humanity. Totally effortless and the guitar is an extension of his body and soul. I wish I could express myself through the guitar like that.
    I will now go and apologize to my Fender.
