      You & zefilms did only one sto (star trek online ) ship, that was over a week ago and it was the Vo'devwl class but I was hoping for the Ra'nodaire class support carrier. So was this collaboration with zefilms & cryptic a one time deal or what?

    The Cardassians are the Italy of WW2 of the Star Trek Universe.
    They wanted an empire ans chose a weak power to bully (Ethiopia). They started a major war to reclaim their lost glory. Latched on to a stronger power for support. Then changed sides at the end.
    Also, they are a 2nd or 3rd rate power trying to be a 1st rate power even though they don't have the economy for it.

  • @casbot71
    @casbot71 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    What I liked about the Galor class is the lack of vulnerable nacelles that were a mainstay of many other races design paradigms.
    If it wasn't for the hooded bridge at the front being an obvious target it would have made a robust design.
    As for the maneuverability though, weren't they supposed to be less maneuverable than Federation and Klingon ships and that was a weakness that was exploited?
    As for power level though, they were badly outclassed until the Dominion retrofitted them.
    A telling example is in the first episode of TNG to introduce the Cardassians - *The Wounded.* It's the one where O'Brien's old Captain is attacking Cardassian ships and the Enterprise-D has to team up with Gul Dukat (or his twin brother…) to stop him.
    It was a *Nebula class ship* that was going on the rampage and it *easily destroyed a Galor class ship* from far outside the Galor class ships range, something the Cardassians on the Enterprise were _very suprised and concerned about._
    [Hmm, maybe the lack of torpedoes was a more limiting factor when not in a armada with other torpedo equipped species].
    Back then the Cardassians were just outclassed, it was Dominion refits that made them a threat.
    In fact if you look at the episode chronology it was soon after Wolf 359, so perhaps the Cardassians were making aggressive moves because they had just seen the Federation get stomped by the Borg and perhaps thought StarFleet was weakened - both by the loss of ships and just that they assumed that if the Borg could do that, maybe they had a chance… not realising that the Borg were on a whole another power level to them.
    If only it hadn't been the great diplomat and peacemaker Picard in command, there could have been a second Federation Cardassian war right then, and even with the depleted numbers StarFleet would have just slaughtered them, solving a lot of long term headaches that would come back to haunt them when the Dominion turned up.
    Instead a instant solution to the Bajoran occupation and the Marquis problem if the Cardassians lost to the Federation and the Feds had pushed for unconditional surrender (which is a good option for them, the Feds have a reputation for ethical behaviour, so surrendering to them is not as bad as surrendering to other powers… like the Klingons).
    And Picard (and especially Worf) had just helped install Gawron as Klingon Chancellor, so he owed the Federation a favour and may have joined in the war as Allies under the Khitomer accords.
    It would have been a good move on Gawron's part, as a good war would cement his power, and it would help strengthen the alliance.
    Star Trek … alternate history hub.

      The Galor was the only ship that looked like it was built like a tank and it did feel as if the Defiant design cribbed some ideas from it with the inboard nacelles and took it further by lacking a saucer section completely.

      The galor was plagued by its design that stressed Wolfpack tactics. See Starfleet figured a ship would likely be surrounded and designed their weapons and weapon arcs to compensate for this. Look at a Starfleet ship and you’ll see weapons emplacements all around it, the idea here is your going to have a weapon array or emitter pointing at you no matter where you try to hit. Starfleet ships are however like cardassian ships lightly armored and rely mainly on shielding for protection. As we saw with the defiant and other starfleet ships they did eventually add armor as well. Chances are the old Galor class ships remained in service far longer then intended due to the damage sustained by Cardassia and the inability of the government to replace them on time. I imagine that post dominion war Cardassia shrunk back to a 3rd rate power and probably relied on the federation equivalent of the Marshall plan to get back off its knees. In that case military spending takes a back seat to getting trade and commerce going once more

    Since there seems to be a bit of a conflict between the sizes of the Galor-class(371.88 meters or 481 meters), I prefer to go with the original filming size(481m long) since it also looks pretty similar in size to the Vor'cha and manages to look big enough next to the Dominion's starships. It may also be significantly larger since you can tell that the tailpiece for the Galor is identical to the beak of the Vor'cha, so if you match those up, the Galor is significantly larger than the Klingon cruiser.

  • @johnpatz8395
    @johnpatz8395 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I’ve always felt the ship was used backwards, as it always seemed the smaller end should be the front, but the probably figured it would be to reminiscent of the front of Klingon battlecruisers. The much of the front rim even is lit up just like engines, only a different color.
    I also thought that the Cardassians should have had weak shields, at least at the start, but have massive amounts of energy resistant armor, as it would have mixed things up a bit, and it would fit well to explain why the front of their ships tended to be huge, as well as their basic tactics needed to employ the main weapon in a fight. Also they should have had the main, and most powerful weapon only useful against large and/or slow moving targets, for which it’s other weapons would be used.
    One thing that always strikes me when watching these breakdowns, all these ships have large number of weapons, but on a Trek, seeing more than a single cannon or torpedo launcher used at a time is extremely rare. Even in big slugfests the Enterprise almost exclusively uses a single phaser array, and don’t get me started on the how an enemy vessel can be pummeling the Enterprise, so the Enterprise fires a single phaser blast at the enemy, then stop firing until they’ve evaluated what sort of damage it did.

    • @LMG1792
      @LMG1792 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      John Patz for me the best space battle was probably in nemesis. There you saw the enterprise let loose on weapons As for the cardassian ships I assume it would be easier to develop strong shields given the resource shortage then the materials it would take to make strong hull.

    • @jaywalkersunite
      @jaywalkersunite 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      >Enterprise fires a single phaser blast at the enemy, then stop firing until they’ve evaluated what sort of damage it did.
      That drives me nutty. We have Data on one side, analyzing how they reduced enemy shields by 10.24%. On the other side, we have a drooling Klingon with a massive war boner smashing the fire button as fast as he can. C'mon Federation, get your head in the game.

    • @anthonygonzalez2897
      @anthonygonzalez2897 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @john patz I always assumed the reason they only fire one array at a time is because phasers draw power from a single source, the warp core. So one phaser concentrates that power, multiple spread it out. We typically only see multiple arrays engaged when the Federation vessels is moving and needs to switch arrays to keep the enemy in their firing arc (that clip Spacedock used in this video of a Galaxy broadsiding a Galor) or in situations like Nemesis where the Big E was using phaser fire to locate a cloaked ship.

We caught 2 shield dampening charges and a phaser shot gutted our port Nacelle. We were forced to withdraw. We made one final pass where I tried to ram the cube, the cube surgically blew off our good nacelle then blew out our impulse engines. All hell broke loose on the bridge when fired started and conduits blew. The one under my chair was the worst. It blew up and pinned me under structure that crashed down. The medical team had to cut off my legs to save me ( transporters were fragged). A few days later at Starfleet medical in SF they had to remove my arms due to burn damage. Now I’m back again, half machine but I’m back. War is hell

    What's funny is that other sources have stated that the ship was actually weakest on the front, and that the heavy disrupter was more to force enemies to the side, where the ship could unleash massed broadsides on a ship that thought it was safe. Same sort of thinking went into why the defense stations were hollow in the center and the station had such large gaps. Be strong where your enemy thinks you are weak, and do not be where your enemy thinks you are strong, something like that.

    Weird the guy just said these ships of the Cardassian Union had a crew of over 300 but I remember hearing in the Star Trek TNG Season 4 episode 'The Wounded' where we heard a Cardassian warship had a crew of 600 onboard so if the Cardassian Galor Class Warship is supposed to have a crew of 300 onboard what happened to the other 300 crewmembers.

    great video didn't know about the lack of torpedoes FASA often suggests that it does use torpedoes. i like that you mention its combination of agility and firepower which is a result of it essentially being a Meshing of its two predecessors the Ekoor and Kulinor cruisers. i hoped you would mention the different variants indicated by the color of the Deflector?

    The Cardassian Union is one of my favourite states in the Star Trek. It seems like a "bad guy" nation at first (especially with how they're portrayed in TNG) but further analysis in the later seasons of TNG and all throughout DS9 showcase the complexity of their state, ideology and methods. Cardassian Officers are usually smart, cunning and tactically minded. Throughout political strife and chaos, the Cardassian people pull through. They find themselves surrounded by the giant UFP, a monster of a nation that has conflicting ideas and thoughts with theirs. They're the biggest of the smaller powers (Non-Romulan/Klingon/Federation) and they do want to show it/assert themselves.

    The advancement of Cardassian technology from the mid to late 24th century really deserves an episode of it's own. The Cardassians went from thinking the USS Phoenix, Nebula Class Starship with an AWACS dish was some type of Federation Heavy Cruiser, to building the Galor class Destroyer within a period of ten years. Did the writers of TNG and DS9 think they needed to give the Cardassians more teeth?

    "Lightly armored" Aren't they supposed to be really rugged, not advanced but sturdy? And at 2 million tons for only 370 meters long that makes sense. It seemed to me that the Cardassians always focused on cheap, efficient designs because they didn't have the sensors/firepower/accuracy of other power's warships. That's why they relied on missile drones, orbital platforms and gunships.

    This is one of the VERY FEW ships in the Star Trek Universe that makes any kind of freaking sense at all.
    Tholians are another.
    But here you have few to no “Huge Masses” hanging-off the ends of Spindly Pylons that would require petajoules to zetajoules of power to just keep in place while moving at impulse speeds. Imagine what could be accomplished by a culture that wasn’t wasting mega-zetajoules per year just to keep their ships from flying to bits when traveling at sunlight speeds.

    The 4 glowing wedges on the wings, brussard collectors? Is this ship have 4 engines? Would be handy with two engines in each armored wing. Even if one was hit and a engine pair was disabled, the second pair gives backup capability as long as two in a single wing are not hit.
