    such a shame that Tesla engineers did not do this simple comparison between USS version and new Tesla Vision. Given that they are replacing functionality that they took away ( i.e. Tesla created the problem) Vision Park Assisit should have been 100% right out the gate. In all conditions: dark / rain / snow etc.

    • @stephen2220
      @stephen2220 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It would have been better if Tesla would have offered USS as an option for around $150 and given us the choice whether or not to purchase it. Then, when Tesla Vision was complete switch over to it...

      @maxfreezy5124 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you don't understand. It is more than possible that Elon just told, that the USS will not be there anymore and they should program something with the cameras to support parking. In my opinion it is a miracle that there is anything available at this moment.

      A human should walk around their vehicle before entering it. I know most don't do this, including myself most of the time, but that's what I'm told from my employer who has a fleet of vehicles.
      The big issue here is when cars are robot ready for robotaxi. This will probably prevent driverless starting or ASS (actual smart summon). Huge oversight in my opinion. Tesla should take their medicine and admit the error, and offer USS installs to the gapped vehicles.

    Front facing Radar / Bumper camera is definitely necessary to improve in situations when pulling in. Got my car in December, and felt horrible not having the parking sensors first. This fix even though kinda early version, helps somewhat.

    Anticipating it will improve.. i agree it's impressive for what it can do, definitely erring on the side of warning too soon than too late.
    1) When i took driver training it was always recommended to walk around the vehicle before getting in... nobody did it.. but it's still the best way not to run over something from park. (last night i found my dog sleeping under the back bumper where USS nor cameras could see her. she's fine by the way )
    2) "Back in my day" we had steel bumpers.. not parking sensors.. you can feel when to stop. :D
    3) I was pleased to see it's more accurate than USS on the shape of things around you. especially the angle of that truck you parked next to.
    4) I expect it will improve with updates still... like auto-high beams this is only the 'ok enough for public' first release.

      It's sad to see Tesla rushing for profit over safety once again. It happened with radar/vision switch and it's happening again here. It took Vision over a year to reach parity with radar but they had me and other customers beta testing for them anyway when it was not ready. I have just cancelled delivery of a 2023 MY because they're doing it with USS again. I'd rather find a low mileage used 2022 instead.

  • @Ipbulldog
    @Ipbulldog ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Raj: Remember the videos from several years ago showing how the Tesla’s avoided being in a hwy chain-crash because the radar could see beneath the car in front and come to an emergency stop because two cars ahead had come to a crash stop. The car immediately in front of the Tesla rear-ended the one in front of him but the Tesla escaped unscathed.
    Now there’s no radar and even the ultra-sonic sensors are gone.
    Even though I have a 2018 Performance 3 with these sensors still in it, they’re now non-functional. Vision alone may be good but the loss of the other features reduces safety IMHO.

    Do these auto brake before actually hitting something? My Lexus RX 450h will stop itself in forward or reverse before a collision. It's really good for backing out of a parking space or driveway as it detects people or cars about to cross in your path. When parking in my garage I get as close in front as I can by letting the car slam on the brakes before hitting the wall.

    What I really hope is that Tesla will use the cameras to detect people moving in front (or back) of the car while it is off or parked. Same as in Sentry Mode. That should be possible and then it would know that someone is in front even the cameras cannot see the person at the moment.

    The most important features for any park assist system is to have you avoid pulling too far into a space and damaging your front bumper lip (very low on the M3 and MS) on the curb or curbing your tires when parallel parking. We have the rear bumper camera to avoid hitting obstacles to the rear, and the side view fender and b-pillar cameras to avoid curb rashing. Now if we only had a front bumper mounted camera! All this, combined with Tesla Vision, we'd be fully protected.

    You should try doing the same test against plants, tall grasses, corners, pointy things, glass windows, or totally smooth surfaces.
    Also, try a place where the parking spot is not flat/horizontal, like if it's uphill/downhill from the road.
    You could also try to let your daughter move around after the car gives a distance reading, while the car is stationary.
    Also, try all other sides of the car.

    while not perfect, you must remember in overwhelming number of cases either what's in the car will not change, or will change with another car/empty space if in a parking lot or parallel parked on street. Tesla says their idea is that the car will remain awake when Sentry is on, and continuously track the vehicles around it. So for example if you had parallel parked in between two cars and there was 25 inches with the car in front, then while you were away that car left and another pulled in, this time 8 inches from your front, then the car would know this as it would have tracked the transition. So when you do get in the car to pull out yourself it would present you with the correct readings. You've demonstrated a really very unlikely edge case in real life, but I appreciate it's not zero probability.

    I have a Model 3 without USS and the first bit of this video I was very satisfied, until I noticed at 10:15 that this whole overview looks completely different for me. I can only assume you have purchased the FSD Package in order to get this overview, and this Vision-Only is, afaik, only for FSD Customers.
    My biggest worry is that I will not get Vision-Only on my USS-less Model 3 due to the fact that here in Europe, FSD just isn't a thing.

    Excellent video.
    1. It illustrated exactly what people thought in terms of the blind spot, but it also highlighted the fallibility of USS in the same use case.
    2. I really like the way vision PA sees curbs/obstacles front, back and sides. I wonder if it will reduce the amount of wheel curbing and grazing the sides of the car - this could be a significant advantage over USS?
    Ultimately, it looks like a camera is required in the front bumper to eliminate the blind spot and it then seems reasonable to conclude vision PA can exceed USS PA.
    Without a bumper camera it looks like it will also exceed USS PA, but it will always have the potential for the forward blind spot ‘issue’.

    Well it will only see the child or small objects when further back. Soon as your child drops out of view, the camera will sense that nothing is there - which I figured it would. Yes, Tesla definitely needs a front bumper camera if only doing parking by vision only. Nice that they have a low rear camera. It only sees the curbs because of the side view car cameras.
    I am not really worried about parking vision. I have been driving for over 50 years without this feature, so I think I can still park without any technical assist. Like I am going real fast when I park, Duhhh!!!! When I pull into my garage I use my headlights as a distance guide.

    Fortunately Tesla models delivered in Thailand had the sensors and radar up until last month! We will not buy another one as planned until it performs better than the old cars. When the cameras will see a child’s bike place in from of the cars while it’s parked and then refuse to drive over it. Approaching a wall or a hedgerow the new system seems to work, which most cars do.
    These tests performed here are not conclusive besides the deficiencies that were uncovered.
    We have no way of knowing if the Tesla was stopping from the hedgerow or the curb.

    Ultrasonic sensor doesn't work very well with fluffy things and very close and low objects (like could be a cat) anyway as you can see yourself. This kind of cases are very very rare and ultrasonic sensors aren't mean to detect them too. So I don't think park assist is actually worse. I think it is actually better as It can also detect curbs

    It is a solution? Pretty good? Your measurements did not convince me. Try this: put an object in front of the car, measure the distance to the car and only then look at the screen, rather than doing it the other way round, which might give the impression that you are trying to find a distance that corresponds with the inches on screen.

    Feel the suddenly appearing low thing in front of the car is a bit of a non issue. You daughter pretty much had to lie down not to be seen by the camera. This is such an edge case it is ridiculous. Robotaxis could have a protocol to allow for a quick back up to check if necessary. I think the vision actually has some advantages around low kerbs that would not generally activate the USS (but still mess up your performance rims). So for 99% of usage vision is probably better. A video comparing the USS and vision with low kerb scenarios would be good.
