I started out sewing garments when I was 10 years old. I absolutely love sewing all the things big & small! lol. My quilting journey began in 2015, but I still love quick & easy sews. Before becoming a quilter, I always bought $20 irons from Walmart. I purchased my first quilter’s iron in 2015; I splurged for a $50 iron at Walmart. lol. It’s still going strong today. However, I have never put water in it. I prefer using a misting bottle or spray starch. Last year I decided to try a cordless iron; I bought the Steamfast one from Amazon. It is my GO TO iron!

I’ve considered a cordless iron. Good to know. My iron is old and gets super hot. I bought a new one and it wasn’t super hot so I returned it. Went back to the old one…lol

I have had 3 Rowentas - all 3 have leaked!! I now have an Oliso and do love it. My first one just stopped working. Just stopped!! It was about 14 months old. I contacted Oliso since it had a 3 year warranty. Within the week I had a brand new iron at my door! No problems with this one but I have 2 1/2 years left on the warranty!! Can’t beat good great customer service! The iron has been great .

Yup, I'm in the process of getting a 2nd replacement for my Oliso iron. First one just stopped heating up one day. Lights kept blinking but never got a steady light and never heated up. 2nd one - Steam selector just stopped "clicking" one day and no steam. I should have never asked for this for Christmas! I'm so very disappointed and frustrated with it! I really wanted to like this iron. Only saving grace is that Oliso customer service is very good about replacing without much hassle.

LOL - I'm laughing at this because I just saw another of your comments where you said "I READ the instructions . . . " I'm sure you did here as well and it's the problem with the iron and not you -

    • @sewzolamarie7527
      @sewzolamarie7527 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@TodayinJensSewingRoom 😅I only say that because if you start to probe someone with questions about whether or not they "followed the instructions", so many times you hear, "Oh, it's self-explanatory, you don't NEED to READ the instructions"! Things change and so do instructions on how-to turn on an iron! There are explicit instructions on how-to use an Oliso and I followed them to a "T". 😁

I have a Rowenta iron that I bought cheap from Walmart several years ago, and I actually like it better than my Oliso that I paid at least 4x as much for. The only annoying thing (very minor) about the Rowenta is that you can't see how much water you've put in the tank, but at least it doesn't make the constantly annoying noises like the Oliso does every single time you pick it up or set it down with the safety plate going in and out. And the Rowenta seems to stay consistently hot and steam better, although it does have a quicker auto shutoff.

I just got tired of buying bottles of distilled water. Also every time I turned around I was having to take the time to clean my iron. I stay in a VRBO house down in Florida on vacation and use their iron. I don’t want to spend time having to clean it with vinegar. I do however wipe the outside of it before I leave. So I went back to a method my mom taught me. I spray my clothes with water from a spray bottle . Then roll them up, place in a pillow case and put in freezer. I just use a dry iron and iron them. If I am sewing and have small area I just spray the area. I get great steam and it irons fantastic. I do still clean the outside of my iron and the holes. No more time spent cleaning iron with vinegar and no more money on distilled water.

Over my many years of sewing, and quilting I have had many brands of irons. Some expensive and others cheap. Finally about 6 years ago I purchased a cordless Panasonic Iron and that is my iron of choice. It does have auto shut off but a pick of the iron turns it back on and it heats super fast. The best part is NO cord getting caught on the ironing board when ironing.

I’ve had a gravity fed iron for several years. It is works really well. My only reservation is that as a left-hander, I struggler a bit with the cord and hose that are attached on the right side of the iron. They are always in the way. My wish is that the manufacturers for these would put the hose/cord on the back like every other iron on the planet!

This was so interesting for me! About a month ago I bought a new Reliable tank iron (gulp$!) to replace my Rowenta because.... small tank and LEAKS!! after buying many irons over the years I splurged on the Rowenta (a model similar to what you had) and it was great. Until it wasn't !! (10 months). I was not happy - and frustrated with the need to refill all. the. time!
So I REALLY splurged on the Reliable Maven 1401S and I LOVE it. I share your frustration about it turning itself off a wee bit too quickly, but it doesn't take much to get it going. I'm intrigued about your new one but I think the hanging tank and the two cords would bother me.
Now going to read my iron instructions about water - I thought I had read NOT to use distilled water.......
    Happy steaming : )

Jen I had the gravity iron (Reliable) and I used a hook in the ceiling to hold the water tank. I also had the IV pole. Personally, I didn't like the iron so I sold it pole and all to a friend who loves it. I have for several years the Rowenta Perfect Steam with a water tank and love it. Hi Jen, I’m almost frightened to mention how old my iron is. I think I bought it when I was going to make my daughters wedding dress. That was 26 years ago😮🤨!!! It’s still going strong, it’s just a regular seam iron, it was inexpensive at the time. It’s made by Kambrook which was made here in Australia. I don’t know if you can still buy them now or if the company is still in existence 😮 I always use distilled water in it and always empty it when I’m finished using it. There has been a lot of times over the years when it’s been used every day. Now that I’ve told you all of this it might just give up, I do hope not as I wouldn’t know what to buy. Happy sewing. 🧵🪡🇦🇺

Many years ago I had a T-Fal 5335 Aquaspeed. My husband bought me an Oluso, it lasted a year and a half and started leaking, so we then purchased a Rowena with the water tank and after about 2 years it started leaking so we bought another one thinking that was a fluke. Again in about a year and a half working with that iron it leaked. Mr husband purchased a Reliable with he water tank. It didn’t have settings for linen, cotton, etc and it is sitting in a box as Fabrucville Canada doesn’t accept returns on them, so I dug out my old T-Fal. It steams and presses as well as the Rowenta and gave had no problems with it.

My biggest complaint on my Rowenta I have had for about 2 years. Its just a home type. Sew a bit and do some altering. The iron has worked fine so far, lots of steam, tap water, no leaks. Yes auto shut off is a bit annoying but it heats up quite fast. My biggest complaint is the dark plastic water container. I can't see how much water is in it!! It is also awkward to fill so I end up often spilling. So far tho it works fine. The appliance industry, large or small is made to quit working fairly soon. Gone are the days of having an iron or most appliances for many years. Half the life quadruple the price.

I realised after carefully reading the Rowenta box that it says "German engineering" instead of "German made." It's actually made in China. I get as many things from China as the next American, but I think that says a lot. Made to be disposable. So sad.

I always used distilled water in irons regardless of what the instructions say. Now, because I've read so many sewists' and quilters horror storied about rust dribbling out from their irons, I don't put water in my irons anymore. I use a spray bottle: Spray the fabric well, roll up the fabric and let sit for several minutes to let the moisture penetrate (pre-cutting), then iron with a dry iron. I've found this way so much more effective for getting stubborn wrinkles out of fabric. Hope you find your perfect iron, Jen. Buying them is a pain!

Were you reading my mind? I was just in my sewing room thinking that I really need a new iron. I have had 2 Rowena’s and they both leaked, tossed them out. Will never buy one again. I did not know that was an issue with them. I’m using a cheap iron I got at Big Lots and keep telling myself I need to get an iron but haven’t gotten around to it. I may check out a gravity feed.

I had a regular Rowenta and hated the auto shut off and constant filling. It never leaked, but i splurged for the Rowenta tank type. No auto shutoff and the tank lasts quite a while. I love that as long as you press the steam button, it steams (in any direction) and if you don't, it doesn't! I've had it for about 4 years now and it works fine. I've got softened tap water, so I use spring water from the store because it does say no distilled. Mine was made in Germany and I've read where that is supposed to be better quality control, but who knows. When this one gives up, I'll probably look into a gravity fed.

My Rowenta never leaked! I can’t believe it. My present iron, which I have a love/hate relationship with, has regular tap water used and that crazy shut-off that you spoke of on your large tank iron. Personally, if money wasn’t an issue, I’d get a professional iron like I seen at Let’s Sew (Evansville fabric store). The tank was huge and the iron is smaller but heavy. So I’m going to be looking forward to your opinion on this one. So, get sewing Jen and let us know your true opinion🥰

Getting the IV pole! And what kind of witchcraft (LOL) is this that your Rowenta never leaked! You must have the magic touch! Honestly I'm really glad to hear that there apparently are the Rowenta's here and there, probably very well cared for, that work for years. And the $ thing - I think if you want a quality one that's made for people who sew, you just end up spending at least $80 and sometimes up to $200 for the non-gravity ones.
      I gotta get that IV pole . . .

So today I got an iron from Amazon for $15.00. I believe it is a Black n Decker. Maybe it is good, maybe not. But I have spent lots of money on better irons only to have to replace them within a few years. I have had leaking problems, one just quit heating up, I have dropped one, etc. Since I am having to replace so often, I am going the “disposable iron” route and see how that works out! I am interested in a follow-up video. And yes, I have had Rowena’s art least three times…. Not worth the price

I’ve had a gravity fed iron like this for a couple years now and I love the steam, the weight, the heat and the fact it is not auto shutoff. Not sure when that all became a thing, apparently people can’t turn their irons off. In about 50 years, I have never failed to unplug my iron. Ever. It’s not hard, and I don’t need the iron company shutting it off for me. Whoa,, soapbox. Yes, had a Rowenta, 2 of them, loved them, one lasted 25 years or so, my husband fixed the leak, the only one that ever happened. I loved that iron. The weight, everything about it. But now, I’ve got the water tank hanging on a ceiling joist, it isn’t that heavy to hang, and I love, love love it. Closest to the old Rowenta, my first love. Take care. Good luck. Completely get the quest for a good iron.

I have a Rowena iron, I don’t use it anymore because it does leak and the steam is not very good. When I need to iron clothes, I have a Chi iron that does a fantastic job. The steam from that iron will blast you into space and scald you bald. The only bad thing about it, is it has auto shutoff. I tried the same iron that you got, but i returned it because the handle got so hot it was uncomfortable to use high heat, so what’s the point? I bought a Reliable tank iron on your recommendation and I love it, even though it has auto shutoff. It’s still going strong, I use distilled water in every iron, I don’t care what the directions say, my water is not for irons. My husband won’t drink it, I bought him a gravity purifier, just to satisfy him. I drink it, I’m used to it.

It’s amazing to hear how many people have had the same problem with Rowena irons. To think that they are still in stores is even more amazing. I too fell into the Rowena phase and had the same issues. 3 Rowentas later, I gave up.🤷‍♀I found a Ninja iron at Target 3 ears ago and so far, so good. I had looked at the gravity fed irons but, 3 years ago, they were out of my price range. Your Amazon find is a little more doable, especially if you are not sure if you will like its functionality. I don’t see as much as you but, I do see the perk of not having to fill the water tank every time you turn around. Now that I am retired, I hope to have more time to sew. Maybe then I can think about upgrading. Will see how long my Ninja holds out.🤞and look forward to an update or review from you.
Speaking of reviews, I have been meaning to ask you about your serger. I remember when you first got it. Any likes or dislikes about it?
Last, thank you for sharing the devotional channel. My friend Mari @marisews uses a Chi iron she found at Walmart and loves it - it was relatively inexpensive. I used a Sunbeam for years and would have kept it if it hadn't had a blue plastic tank where I couldn't see how much water was in it. Mari's Chi is serving her well! So no surprise that althought Ninja isn't up there as a big deal brand, it is serving you well. If it ain't broke don't fix it, right? Sometimes the cheaper, more widely available ones work better than the fancy ones.
My Juki serger was totally worth the $. I've had zero problems with it and it threads (and sews) like a dream. The only thing I wish it had is a free arm - but I don't miss that a bit.
I've been watching a lot more channels that are devotional and informational. In fact, I was screaming at my computer yesterday over a strong Christian (Alan Parr) who was responding to a video done by someone who "deconstructed" her faith and now is no longer a Christian. Literally - screaming! My husband said my spiritual gift was showing (prophecy, where you always speak the truth and highlight the truth and have zero patience with those who dilute and distort it). Man, I'm still mad about that! It's the most basic of sins, the abject pride that assumes we know more than God. What bold hubris that woman has. My husband reminded me of Philippians 2 - "every knee will bow, every tongue confess." Oh yes we will.
Anyway - thanks for appreciating my little thing at the end. I try and witness where I can short of being a full-on evangelist - not my gift clearly when I'm ready to just go after that foolish woman and give her a good talking-to. Like God needs any help LOL

I have had two Rowenta irons - the first was made in China, not Germany, and I sent it to be repaired at a U.S. address some years ago but now I don't remember why - I think it basically just stopped working. I also have backup irons, a GE and a Norelco, that belonged to family members who passed and I thought, well, just in case I'll keep these. I've actually found the older Norelco to be quite good. A couple of months ago I saw a fairly new Rowenta that was made in Germany and a gravity-feed Reliable at Goodwill at the same time! I decided I "needed" one of them...and after much deliberation took the Rowenta for 10 bucks instead of the Reliable for $125 as that just seemed more than I need - and of course, I've continued to second-guess myself ever since...I had heard that the Rowentas that are actually made in Germany are better, and I am liking it in terms of it being heavy and giving a great result but if I fill it all the way it does leak, so I have to keep that in mind. It says "Made in Germany" in very large print right on the side of the water canister part of the iron as it seems to be a selling feature, not just something you find on the soleplate next to the item number. I was also surprised to find that tap water is recommended, as that can vary so much from place to place in quality as I understand it, but yeah, they tell you not to use distilled water although I haven't tried to find out why. Good luck with your new iron!!!

I’m not sure where I sit with this ‘use it and send it back’ as a ‘quick fix’. I guess if you don’t mind buying a used product ‘as new for full price’ then it’s one thing but if you would want discount on an item like that then you’re basically taking someone’s profit margin. Normally I would let it slide but then you finish with a religious quotation. I’m not saying that you’ve done something wrong but I do question if this same culture isn’t helping the smaller businesses. Sorry I don’t mean to be a Debbie Downer…
(I mention it as it ‘could’ appear that you condone the practice)

    • @TodayinJensSewingRoom
      @TodayinJensSewingRoom  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Honestly, I agree with you. I think if I was someone who did this on a regular basis you'd be right. I don't know if Walmart just puts it back in the box and on the shelf - but I can say that I put it back exactly as I found it, wrapped in the plastic carefully and the cord wound perfectly. And Walmart's profit margin - that's a tough one because it's not fair to cherry pick who gets a good profit and who doesn't.
I had to do an essay when I was in school (Critical Thinking class, went back to college at age 50) and had my eyes opened to the way places like Walmart have ruined small towns. It's easy to think they're providing jobs, helping us with cheap prices, but they've run all the small businesses out of town. So sad - which is why I've always gone to small bookstores to feed my book habit, plus local hardware stores when I need something specific. I always try and eat at the local restaurants and buy local when I can. Obviously in this case it was a quick fix, but it easily could have been a "try it and see if you like it" situation. My good friend Andra @andramakes is always telling me to skip Starbucks and find a local coffee shop. I do that when I'm not in a hurry or am somewhere close to one.
This is such a great topic and I'm glad you brought it up. I think I'll try and address it in a Friday Sews video. It's a great discussion. Thanks!
