Good Lord, Mark is absolutely phenomenal. I hope people understand what they are witnessing. Musicians with this level of virtuosity are few and FAR between on this Earth. Not taking a DAMN thing away from Laura and DJ, but seriously... from a guitarist's standpoint, Mark is freaking incredible. Wish I could get a glimpse into his mind and how he has come to conceptualize music over the years. It's amazing seeing how his playing has evolved. Makes me wonder about that process.
Finally Speer gets the recognition he so richly deserves - in Europe. Guitarists know when they're listening to someone special. Because as guitarists, we know all the cliches and tricks and licks - and Mark uses NONE of them! He reduces guitar playing to its most elemental level and tonal purity, and at that rudimentary level he SINGS with his instrument for almost two hours non-stop. No gimmicks, no hiding, what you see and hear is Mark Speer. He's basically evolved a guitar language all his own - his own musical dictionary, grammar book, and manual of style and punctuation. And it's evolved so organically over time. Just beautiful. Genuine playing - no fakery. Massive respect.
The music is great.But bassist Laura Lee is stunning! She is like the reincarnation of the mythical Amazon. Watching her move is hypnotic and intoxicating simultaneously. For me, she sets the tone of the whole show.
This guy fucks my mind! I am constantly amazed by his skills and his presentation! This guy busts out technically complex jives but he stays completely composed - like his body body language is saying, "What, THIS SHIT? No big thang! I funked my own ass to sleep as a baby!" That's why he lets that shit come out smoothly pianissimo so that it stays within a healthy/tingling of smooth chillness all from this guys extraordinary essence! I think the last artist of this caliber may have actually been MJ! I know many people think Beyonce is the QUEEN of all musicians, but really, she may be good at shakin that bubbly ass like a pro, and she;s got a somewhat unique voice, but she still ends up doing those PLAYED-OUT sorts of vocal gymnastics. Nah - she's not my idea of musical royalty! - Especially because she has to come out herself with a crown on to make people subliminally start thinking of her as QUEEN B. Ok - long-winded, but at least you know how I feel ABOUT "QUALITY/TIMELESS FUNK MUSIC!
I present the new “GRATEFUL DEAD”....I was currently amazed by Martin Miller on his Ibanez but this cat is surreal....PRAT...I’m listening through custom iem’s so there is no 8 or 9 rows back. The sound is linear.... front row or on stage...impact is immediate..Laura got gams...

I think you go to some gigs over the years and know, without sounding "mellow dramatic" you're in the presence of someone really great.
