I bought all of my Stanley planes in the early 70s and did everything you did from 15:45 on when they were new out of the box. After more than 50 years I still have all and they still work fine. Even new tools need attention before using them
Nice job. Just did one myself. As a warning to others I left the plane three days in white vinegar to eat the rust but it also ate a lot of the plane as well, took a whole day of sanding to get the sole back to the point where there is a good 80% bright metal and the remaining pits don’t affect function. It also ate some of the screw threads in the sole for the tote and front knob so I’ll have to remedy that too.
I believe he removed it because the newer Stanleys like this actually have much thinner japanning and you could see bare metal in certain spots. I restored a No5 in similar condition. I noticed a huge difference in japanning between the type 20s and my dad's type 15 that I restored for him.
@@triune_blades Newer Stanley's use paint. Not japaning. I'm sure I was informed of that just recently as most of their new planes can have all of the interior colour removed with paint stripper whereas true japaning would not be effected
Semana passada encontrei no mezanino da minha marcenaria minha Stanley número 5 que comprei em 2003 em São Paulo, vou restaurar ela em breve. Vou usar suas dicas! Valeu.
Good job so nice to see someone doing a proper job of it, I really enjoyed watching this because you do It the right way and not by half's well done great job.,
Good Job! Suggest using brass brush to diminish scratches instaed of wire. Also, use loctite NOT permanent to secure & protect screw threads. What was the white paste you applied. No sound cause of speedup! Thanks for sharing. Jim
Un cepillo de los más bellos que he visto en mi vida y muy original como debe de ser un Stanley bailey lo mejor en herramientas de carpintería felicidades al dueño de esta maravilla
Nice work, I just refinished a 5 1/4 Stanley Bailey yesterday. Same exact process. The week before that No 4 too. I did so much sanding, and when I saw you put the stripper on, I really slapped myself in the head. I literally had it on my work bench in front of me and never thought to use it. So anyhow, What kind of diamond stone is that you are using? Could you link it maybe?
Great vid. I’m in the process of restoring a old Bailey number 4. After rubbing down the handles I have found out that you can’t put normal varnish on them. What was the varnish you used?
Do not flatten the sole on a ceramic tile. These tiles are notoriously unflat. Those stripes on the sandpaper indicate high spots. You risk ending up with a "wavy" sole. Instead flatten it on a granite plate or on the top of a table saw.
Bellissimo restauro!
@@tomelliott565 I'm about to restore some planes. That's why I'm watching this video. If you'd share the proper technique, I could follow it. So could others who read your post.

He is using evaporust, which should not eat the metal, but thanks for the tip.
The speed makes all of your neighbors sound like they are driving F1 cars.
I would've liked to see the finished product. 🤔 Like a few before/after pics...
What type of coating did you use to spray. The jappaning looked good prior.
Nice work...but why the fast fwd...would have liked to hear your thoughts as you were restoring that old beauty.
Great job but I have one question. That Japanning looked to be just fine. Why remove good Japanning for thin spray paint?

I didn't know Alvin and the chipmunks were into woodworking. Jk, great video.

How did you get the chasis/base so clean after the paint stripper. That's the problem I'm having.

Thank you man!
Why, oh why would you strip a perfectly good paint finish?

Nice restore. Had to turn the volume off though. Very irritating sound when fast forwarding.
Good job, congratulations.
God bless you.

Shellac
It looked like you did a good job except that you could have redone the Jappaning instead of using paint.
I have a Stanley 5-1/2. The only difference is that mine has a corrugated foot.

Nice restoration, but had to turn off the sound as the Micky mouse impression gets a bit much
Great video, I’ve just bought a Record 5 that’s going to need at least as much work doing to it. Lots of great tips here thank you.
What is the solution that you left them in?
Evapo-Rust
@@paolowolverine thanks :)
WHAT kind of paint remover is that?
really nice job.
How to clean up, to paint, etc but how it is to let people how you made the adjustments are very much important.Where is that part?
Hi, what adjustments are you talking about? Blade adjustment for cutting? I take it for granted that one already knows how to use a plane ...
Good restoration 🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍👍
And Donald duck was narrating this lol
Was that Simon behind you, Alvin?
Theodore 🙄
Good vid spoiled by speeding up film whats the point of sound never mind A

Great job but the background noise is annoying.
Mine is much prettier than that. Looks better than brand new !
Hate speed up, can’t sleep with it
do i care?
Mouse talking :D
Me gusta👍
Add more stripper and allow it to do its job. A little patience can spare you a lot of work.
The Chipmunks noise was very irritating
Wow I gonna get that formula look simple n clean using a wire wheel is annoyingly dusty and annoying I just done a number 7 & 8
Had to turn the sound down. The chipmunk talking was irritating.
Fake restoration.
I repair/restore planes for a living, and this was all wrong.
If you say so…
It's easy to criticize. Instead, why not provide some feedback so he could improve on the next one if he did something wrong?
