The Four Yorkshireman dates back to 1968 and never actually featured in Monty Python's Flying Circus itself. But things have a life of their own. It's become part of the furniture in the UK; mainly because it plugs into British nostalgia for when things were truly awful. It's inexplicable but true.

This sketch originates from 1967 and was featured in "At Last The 1948 Show", a forerunner to "Monty Python", two of the writers were Graham Chapman and John
Cleese, who later found fame in "Monty Python"

It's a really easy sketch to do your own of. I must have seen half a dozen of them at various scouting expeditions in my youth. "Rain? When we went camping, the Earth wasn't fully formed yet! It rained rocks. We called 'em meteors. And we liked it!"

Hormel, the actual makers of Spam, originally hated this sketch. But sales actually increased because of it, causing Hormel to realize their mistake. They eventually got so on board with the sketch, that they incorporated parts of the sketch into their advertising.

When I worked at Lotus Software there was a group of us in the warehouse who were Python fans and we had a session of doing the Spam sketch. The office manager came out to ask something and just stopped and stared us shouting SPAM at each other, shook his head and went back in the office.

The use of the term spam for unsolicited electronic communications is derived from this sketch.
The excessive amount of Spam was probably a reference to the ubiquity of it and other imported canned meat products in the United Kingdom after World War II (a period of rationing in the UK) as the country struggled to rebuild its agricultural base. Thanks to its wartime ubiquity, the British public had grown tired of it.

in the spam sketch you see john cleese enter reading dirty comments from a book. earlier in that spam episide cleese enters a shop reading from a book of incorrect english translations for foreign visiters. the book replaces the real translations with dirty english words. that's what that was all about.
the first sketch is recorded live, probably, from their hollywood bowl performance from 1982 and never appeared on the tv show. its hard to say which python sketches are the "best." its best to watch them in context through full episodes of their show. one of my favorites was a rare episode with a running plot and theme called "mr neutron." it was from their last season on tv without john cleese but the whole episode is hilarious. thanks for the video.

I first encountered 'Four Yorkshiremen' on their1975 'Live at Drury Lane' album (imo best one), This version is from the Hollywood Bowl, much later. It was never part of their 'Flying Circus repertoire. Beaurifully scripted with spot-on accents. 'Looxureh!' still gets me every time. As for 'Spam', it gave me one of those 'bladder-control challenge' moments, a not uncommon experience watching first-run Python. It was TerryJones's waitress that did me in. Sheer madness. Bloody Vikings! RIP Terry, and Graham too. Great choice, Megan,

Fun Fact: The building used in the ‘Spam’ sketch still stands at the junction of Toller Lane & Cross Road in Bradford.
In fact a lot of Monty Python was filmed in / around Bradford, the Aire Valley & Wharfedale. This includes parts of the ‘Hells Grannies’ sketch, the ‘Turning Into a Scotsman’ sketch, the Hearse Race & one of the many ‘Hermit’ sketches to name but a few; plus the exterior footage for ‘Every Sperm Is Sacred’ song in The Meaning of Life.
Also, part of Michael Palin’s post Python series Ripping Yarns was filmed in Saltaire.

Whilst the four Yorkshire men is from 'Monty Python at the Hollywood Bowl', it's not actually a Monty Python sketch. It was originally on a show called 'At Last the 1948 Show' - which predated Monty Python but featured a number of the same actors and writers. If you like that kind of surreal British humour, can I suggest you check out 'The Goons' 'What's the Time, Eccles?' th-cam.com/video/ctM_Rvgjfpo/w-d-xo.html

I don't know the order they were made but I was always under the impression the first version was the one with Marty Feldman (the guy with weird eyes also in Young Frankenstein) and Tim Brooke-Taylor, (who was also in The Goodies) - Not sure though. My favourite version at the moment though is one I did for my own entertainment - I did a "bad lip reading" type video of THE OSBORNES doing the four yorkshire men sketch but not sure whether it's worth uploading. I enjoyed seeing Sharon and Kelly talk with men's voices deeper than Ozzy's. I shoulda used AI but I'm not clever enough so did it the old fashioned laborious way of vaguely matching the words to lip movements. Almost finished making David Attenborough and Chris Packham do the dead parrot sketch as well but that was trickier and some others. It's becoming an obsession.
