I will always have a special place in my heart for George Carlin’s James, although Alec Baldwin’s James made me laugh a couple times. You can really tell Carlin’s James is a real smart-aleck. My favorite lines are (in no particular order): “Hello, Gordon, is it tomorrow?” “Did you lose your way, Gordon?” “Perhaps it was Instinct?” And my all-time favorite, from another episode: “Dirty cars from dirty sidings! YEEECH!” (The sound of disgust sounds like a violent sneeze.) Carlin was channeling his inner comedian in this character, although never crossing the line like he usually did in his adult-skit shows. He made James the funniest character in the show, to my mind.
Carlin's James during Seasons 3 and 4, to me, kinda took on a nasally direction which reminded me of Don Adams - best known for being Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 of CONTROL on the show _Get Smart_ as well as the title characters of both _Inspector Gadget_ and _Tennessee Tuxedo and his Tales._ Adams often did a takeoff on William Powell in _The Thin Man_ movies starting with his _Bill Dana Show_ character Byron Glick. If I can't have Susan Roman back as James, I could settle for someone like Maurice LaMarche who can do a good Don Adams impression for James.
James sounding like a younger engine actually seems kind of fitting, he has attitude, loves going fast, and out of the main steam team, he feels like the one to get into trouble the most, kind of like younger people.
Kerry Shale clearly nailed with Gordon's performance for the US dub. If anything, just like his James voice, Shale's is the most arrogant we'd hear from Gordon.

While I understand where you're coming from to end this voice rank trilogy, I still would've love to see more of what you could do for the other voices like Edward, Henry, Gordon, Cranky, STH, Toby, Bertie, Harold, Diesel, Stanley and Diesel 10. I think Robin Smith’s James voice can be summed up in one phrase: best in small doses. He was good for his role as James in the DVD menu, but if he wanted to voice James for a full length episode or something, it would be too much.

For me personally, I would go with Michael and Geroge Carlin. They did great with him in the model series. CGI I would go with the US dub. You should do a rank of Donald and Douglas. Let's see who did the best throughout the series.
Michael Angelis would've definitely been a better casting choice as James for Magic Railroad as opposed to Susan Roman. Susan does a decent job (especially at the Smelter's Yard scene) but I think Angelis being kicked off the film is a tad unfair. I mean, imagine being a long-serving narrator of a TV show and being the childhood voice to generations of people only to not make it to the final cut of the movie.

Plus, not only would it had been cool to link an interaction between him voicing James with his next American counterpart being Alec Baldwin, but given his age James is meant to sound old (hence his built date and one Annual story). The CGI Series failed to forget that and given Keith Wickham's high voice for him just doesn't fit despite the energy he had until hearing his scream in TAB, I just cringed to an extent. Kerry Shale may've tried to give him a bit of that age to him, but his shouting doesn't have that kind of energy compared to Keith. Either way, it left a lot to be desired. With Susan Roman, while too kid-ish, she does put great effort in the Smelter's scene and I do enjoy her talking about her fond memories of the film in both the YOUCH Films Podcast interview and from Thomas Blue's interview in 2017 (even surprising how she also knows the controversy and the original cut as well although I couldn't hear a little bit of it in the latter). It just goes to show that even voice actors when working on a show/movie can have their own opinions, even on MRR.

I just played Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga and I unlocked Yarrel Poof who is in fact voiced by Kerry Shale and it sounds exactly like his voice for James honest to god.
Hearing james being voiced by sailor jupiter in magic railroad is very strange, but a tad nostalgic in my book. Also the reason james got casted with one of the English VAs of sailor moon (same with percy) was because the test audience thought Michael angelis' takes made him sound too old so they cheaped out on Canadian actresses who (again) were known for providing English voice work for sailor moon.
Rob Rackstraw is the voice of James, in my opinion. Mostly US but UK as well. He is just the man who comes up when I talk about James. He might have some competition with Angelis.

I like all the UK voices. Well, I mean Michael Angelis, Keith Wickham and Rob Rackstraw. I don't remember Stephen Donald too much, since I don't have the Railway Adventures game. (I'll admit, Stephen is not too good.) I get you don't like Keith, but I personally enjoyed him. Besides, I'd rather prefer the UK dubs. 👌 I guess Kerry Shale is good, but I'm not much into the US dubs. I certainly enjoy Rob Rackstraw; he is the best in the CGI series. 👍 And I grew up with Michael Angelis, so of course he was awesome. Shame he was rejected from Thomas and the Magic Railroad, because I don't think he sounded too old, as test audiences thought. I actually prefer the US CGI voice (Kerry) and think if the writing had been better it could have worked…you can really see it in Duck in the Water/Duck’s Rocky Rescue…he might sound stuck up but he also has a softer side

I just played Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga and I unlocked Yarrel Poof who is in fact voiced by Kerry Shale and it sounds exactly like his voice for James honest to god.
You should do more of these like Gordon, Henry, Toby, Edward & many others.

We were robbed of Angelis as James in Magic Railroad.
Hearing james being voiced by sailor jupiter in magic railroad is very strange, but a tad nostalgic in my book. Also the reason james got casted with one of the English VAs of sailor moon (same with percy) was because the test audience thought Michael angelis' takes made him sound too old so they cheaped out on Canadian actresses who (again) were known for providing English voice work for sailor moon.
Rob Rackstraw is the voice of James, in my opinion. Mostly US but UK as well. He is just the man who comes up when I talk about James. He might have some competition with Angelis.

I’ve grown used to George Carlin’s natural voice for James. I can’t explain it, but I love it: it’s smarmy and raspy. If they were doing voice castings for the engines, I’d cast Steve Buscemi as James.

I thought Keith Wickham gave James roughly the same voice in the U.S. dub as Gordon and Sir Topham Hatt. And that Ben Small, the voice actor for Thomas in the U.K. dub, also voiced James in that one. Anyway, what did that Family Guy clip at the end say?

I like all the UK voices. Well, I mean Michael Angelis, Keith Wickham and Rob Rackstraw. I don't remember Stephen Donald too much, since I don't have the Railway Adventures game. (I'll admit, Stephen is not too good.) I get you don't like Keith, but I personally enjoyed him. Besides, I'd rather prefer the UK dubs. 👌 I guess Kerry Shale is good, but I'm not much into the US dubs. I certainly enjoy Rob Rackstraw; he is the best in the CGI series. 👍 And I grew up with Michael Angelis, so of course he was awesome. Shame he was rejected from Thomas and the Magic Railroad, because I don't think he sounded too old, as test audiences thought. Speaking of which, I thought Susan Roman was fine, but I can understand why everyone hates.

I actually prefer the US CGI voice (Kerry) and think if the writing had been better it could have worked…you can really see it in Duck in the Water/Duck’s Rocky Rescue…he might sound stuck up but he also has a softer side
