“Ms. Everdeen, it’s the ones we love most that destroy us.”
That _smirk_ when he says that. I never thought someone with a full beard could look sadistically evil. With Snow I stand corrected. He was grinning like he knew everything this whole time. I was genuinely afraid.

This sentence, now that we kwow that it will be a prequel about Snow and a tribute that would probably die, make me feel like he knows what about he talks. I really feel the hype now!

I remember watching this and my grandma walked in and just said "oh that's the villain!"
She never heard of, lat alone watched any of the hunger games films, but recognized the actor who, according to her, is at his best when potraying villains.
I told her the very basics of Snow's character and she just said "figures" and stayed to watch the scene, despite not knowing a single word of English, just appreciating how good his acting is.

As much as I hate Snow, I LOVE that his response to Katniss when she says “you asked me to convince you that I was in love peeta didn’t I at least do that?” Is “Miss Everdeen, it’s the things we love most that destroy us... I want you to remember I said that.” Like he was mocking her but it’s SUCH a powerful statement for Peeta and Katniss’ relationship, he pretty much told her like “YOU ARE in love with Peeta, not because you were trying to convince me but because you truly love him and now I’m gonna make you think you’re losing the man you love just to let him out on purpose because he’s [the thing you love most] programmed to hate and kill you [what will destroy her]” and the “I want you to remember I said that.” So she would KNOW Peeta only got out because HE wanted him to, UGH THEIR MINDS!!!!!

She pretty much went insane after snow sent the roses. In the book they were red and pink roses and the scene was so intense. She was hysterical, screaming, crying and they had to sedate her to calm her. Which is why they had to launch a mission to save Peeta. She was beyond broken. Those scenes were powerful and intense but not much shown in the movie actually.

She reached for haymitch mainly because to her only he can understand her at that moment. Haymitch also loved Peeta.
I never saw her explicitly confess even in her head that she loved Peeta you know.she was that type of girl ,who didn't much understand what she felt and why.
She went to talk to finnik about how snow punishing her using Peeta thinking fennik will understand her because he has Annie. Fennik loved Annie, she didn't' deep drived in her head that why she thought Fennik is the only one to understand her . In her subconscious mind its because Peeta meant same to her. "it's the things we love most that destroy us"
that line is what makes me believe that "the ballad of songbirds and snakes" is about a man who tried to be good, but ended up letting his obsession with control and power and needing to be the greatest at everything (needing to win everything) slowly destroy him. it's a tale of tragedy at its core. it's also what makes me believe that snow did love lucy gray, and that's the exact reason why it ended the way it did. because snow craved control of others, but also of himself. he prided himself on his self-control, but when he was with lucy gray, he lost that. he was vulnerable, felt weak, everything that comes with love, but that all challenged what he took pride in about himself. we see him at his absolute lowest in those woods at the end, no self-control, panicked, quite literally going insane. lucy gray represented everything about snow that he never wanted brought to the surface. that's why, in the end, he never allowed himself to love again, because he DID love lucy gray, and because he loved her, he never loved again. all he had left was his need for power and control, which grew more and more crazy with every year that passed by, to the point where he lost his sanity, making sure EVERYTHING was under his control. he thought it was love that destroyed him. and, in a way, it was. when he loved, he realized how much he needed power and control. when he realized love couldn't give him that, he turned to controlling the citizens of panem, until that destroyed him. that's what the quote "ambition will fuel him, competition will drive him, but power has its price" means. his power came at a price: his sanity.

@Hanif Faris yeah but regardless. The girl literally sang a song for him the night before telling him how she adored him, and he cried while listening to it. The ending was kinda messed up to me. I didn’t like how fast he fell out of love after all the things he says about her in the book. And how little impact she left on him. How casually he up and left. Went to the capitol, killed highbottom and not even a bit of worry as to where the love of his life was, how she was, not a bit of regret. I mean I know he was destined to be evil but come on, it all went down too quickly, he lost his mind too quickly. I mean he didn’t even cry for her after what he’d done, even if he was tyrannical he still once adored the girl, and to just forget her like that? I don’t know it felt wrong

I remember when I saw this in theaters, and my heart was literally beating at 100 miles per hour every time Snow spoke. The snake-like attitude he presented as he was just taunting and tormenting Katniss was absolutely horrifying and amazing at the same time. No one but Donald Sutherland could've pulled this role off, and even to this day, I still get goosebumps during this scene. Now, if we were to take away anything from this scene, it's that Snow knew EXACTLY who Katniss was right off the bat. From the moment she volunteered for Primrose, to the moment she fired her arrow and destroyed the arena. Every moment she displayed a side of her skills and identity in the arena and outside of it, he knew exactly the kind of person she was. She wasn't at all afraid to use Cinna's clothing and fashion to send a message, and even less afraid to fight in the arena when it came down to it. Snow knew she was a rebel and a fighter, and he knew she was in love with Peeta. The moment with the berries was all he needed to see in order to confirm those suspicions.

Idk of you’ve read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes but it’s a prequel on Snow as an 18 year old and how he came to power. He’s a mentor in the tenth hunger games to lucy gray a girl from district 12. Everything is from his perspective and the book is SO GOOD. The way you analized his character made me think you might def want to read it!! It brings sooooo much more depth to the whole series in general its AMAZING

Honestly, after reading and watching Ballad of Snakes and Songbirds, I can totally understand why Snow tortured Peeta to torment Katniss. The mockingjay symbol, a bird he hated and was tormented by in such a personal way, was used against him in the uprising, as well as the The Hanging Tree song. He was fighting fire with fire, personal hurt against personal hurt.

"It's the things we love most that destroy us." - I'm pretty sure that statement also refers to Lucy Gray Baird, the girl from District 12 who Snow mentored for the Hunger Games some 40 or so years ago.
"I imagine you're not here to thank me for the roses" - he sent the roses, but he wasn't the one who bombed District 13, rather it was Coin. Katniss did not know this at the time but Snow was hoping she'd start to work it out for herself.
"We're long past the opportunity for noble sacrifice" - Regardless of whether it's Katniss, Peeta, or anyone else, Snow knows that Coin won't stop until she's dead, and neither will the rebels.
"I doubt you know what honesty is, anymore" - When he says this, I think he's referring to Katnissing believing Coin is helping her, believing that Coin is helping the resistance, when in reality she's just using Katniss and everyone else.

There are 2 meanings to this that I see
    1. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I won't spoil it, but just trust me that the reason is in there.

Snow is the best villain I have ever read in both child and adult fiction.
Most villains either hide in the dark until they are exposed (like Lord Voldemort is seen by Cornelius Fudge in Order of the Phoenix after a year of hiding which leads to the entire Wizarding world finally believing he's back) or them being a direct threat right from the start where the hero knows their name and details. They can all be sly and manipulative and clever, but it's hard to make them truly 3D when they are either hiding or out in the open.
Snow however... he always sent shivers down my spine. He basically hid in his mansion during the first book/film whilst watching his citizens' children murder each other. But every time he came out of his 'shell' it was to make a threat or to make a move and the majority of the time, those moves paid off, even if it didn't seem like it at the time. He almost always played the long-game meaning almost no one could see what he was planning to do next.
Give me a list of villains to go up against and I'll steer clear of President Snow every goddamn time.

    • @rosebud10123

Snow was known as a direct threat from the beginning though. It’s because of him the districts run the way they do in the first book and are as tight security as they are in the second. Sure people shrug it off as mainly the Capital but who leads the Capital? Snow. That’s why he became so much of an icon of being an enemy in two. Finnick even states “Katniss remember who the real enemy is.”
Among those who control the games, he makes it clear he wants people dead, most importantly Katniss as she becomes the sheer fuel for the fire that will destroy everything he’s built to keep himself in power. So no, I can’t say he’s too much different in the sense of being different than all those “direct threat” villains. He always was both direct and indirect. There’s quite a few out there like that. He was just written well. Good villain, just not different by the comparisons you made.
