I have used Sonlight the last couple years and they come with book labels like this. 👍🏻 It’s genius! Now I’m trying AO for some subjects and this is very helpful to organize things. 😊
I just found your channel ❤ we used Ambleside online for the first 4 years (for the exception of one term). We are now using Simply Charlotte Mason and I also love their Bible, History and Geography guide. Though , I do like AO's Geography selections as well. I'd love to see how you decide to combine. We are combining as well right now. We are using SCM Ancient Egypt and my son is reading some of AO's YR 5 history, science, biography, geography and literature selections. LORD willing next year we will be doing SCM Ancient Greeks and some of AO Yr 6 selections for my oldest and AO yr 1 for my son who LORD willing be starting lessons. AO YR 6 covers ancients as well so I think it will be a good fit. If you look at Ambleside, the literature selections tie with history at times so if you do SCM just look at any Ambleside year that covers that time period and that may give you some ideas for literature, etc. I also plan to use AO for all the riches. SCM seems pretty simple to add to but I'm still figuring this out because we just started combining the two ❤ hope you all have a fantastic year!
Thank you for this! Super helpful. I have heard that SCM history/bible/geography is light enough to still add in other things if desired, but I know Ambleside is not light enough to add in much else while doing all the assigned readings. So once we play around with it I'll try to do an update video! I'm also trying to let go of the idea that they have to only learn one history time period at a time (don't know why I think that?). Yay for keeping a timeline and book of centuries so that as the kids read, they'll be able to make the connections. Do you still have the kids do the Ambleside Online bible readings even while doing SCM bible? Wondered about that. Thanks!
@LizBlueandHazel yes i agree you can add to SCM, but not to AO. As for bible, we stick to SCM bible passages, they fall under history. I am thinking of adding the AO bible readings for my oldest son for his own personal bible reading time. I think it's important to get them in the habit of personal bible reading. I am not sure if I will be doing that soon or once he gets into Y6. I wouldn't do additional bible time for littles though. Charlotte usually had multiple streams of history, I'm not sure if that started in form 2, but I think she had ancient history, own countries history and a neighbor countries history. I recommend listening to a Delectable Education for more info on history streams.
I’m doing something like this next year so I thought I’d jump in the conversation 😉 CM added in British history 4th and then ancient in 5th. AO already does this naturally and I’m going to use it as I combine history into a three year rotation. Our Island Story is your British and I am going to add in ancients in the 6th year, spread throughout since AO had these already included. I’m cycling Medieval, 1600-1850, and then Modern in years 1-6 then having my students break off and begin their own years starting in Y7. Don’t know if that’s helpful or makes sense 😅 but I’ll do a video on it soon.
Hi Liz, been loving your AO videos as I decide if I want to join! Question- did you find that your year 2 and year 3 kids missed out on the history readings from year 1? (Like Viking Tales and the beginning of Island Story?) I’ll have a year 3 next year and wondering if we should start with the beginning of AO history in year 1…
Great q. I worried about the same thing coming in later years (our first year doing AO we had a year 1,3, and 4). I didn’t think the kids were confused at all, and they were great about just diving into a time period. But yes they did miss out on earlier stories, and I’ve had to come to peace that we can’t read all the things I’d wish, and that kids are excellent at making connections. Every thing they’ll learn in year 3 can be stand alone knowledge that will be a connection at some point for future knowledge! I wouldn’t feel the need to go back and start with year 1 history, but of course you can if you like! One thing to note is that AO weaves some literature and other books into the time period of that year’s study, to help with making connections…so some of that may get lost if you do an earlier history year.

Sonlight book lists also seem soooo great! If only there was time enough to read them all from all the lists. Wish you the best year starting out!
I've always been interested in Ambleside. This is a beautiful home library. I love it!
Thank you!
