Mid Year Update For 5th, 4th, & 2nd Grade Using Ambleside Online
Here's an update on how the first half of the year has gone for my 5th grader, 4th grader, and 2nd grader using mostly Ambleside Online. This is our 2nd year using AO and our 2nd year switching to a mostly Charlotte Mason homeschool.
We have thinned the books for my 4th and 5th grader, leaving out Age of Fable and some of my 4th graders literature reads ( I've combined her with literature books with my year 5 student). I've decreased the number of daily narrations each child has to about 3/day and specifically am not having them narrate the literature read alouds.
My year 5 reads most all his own books except the lit reads and Wild Animals I Have Known, my year 4 is reading about half of her books and listening to audio for Storybook of Science. They both do one written narration per week and will be making the jump to 2/week soon.
One thing I plan to do going forward is to create a loop schedule for our morning time so that I can alternate literature, Shakespeare, and Trial and Triumph.
Hope this gives you a realistic look into how we've made this work and also what we didn't get to!

Why We Waited Till 4th Grade To Begin Spelling (Using All About Spelling)
มุมมอง 5303 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is my second time going through level 1 of All About Spelling! My first time I waited till my oldest was in 3rd grade, when he was a proficient reader and began showing a need for spelling and writing. With my second kiddo I waited till 4th grade. She was a later reader but an earlier writer. So while she wanted to write more, words didn't look as correct to her because her reading wasn't ...
Math Mammoth Vs Singapore Math Primary 2022: Why We're Switching For 5th Grade
มุมมอง 1.6K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
See why we're switching from SIngapore Math Primary 2022 to Math Mammoth for 5th grade. We have used Singapore Math Primary 2022 with my son since the middle of his 1st grade year. It went pretty well (just needing to pause to work on math facts here and there) until his 4th grade year when I began to consider switching math programs. Singapore Math became too much for me as a teacher. With 3 y...

End Of Year Update Ambleside Online: What We We're Changing & What We Liked

Here’s an honest update as we finish our first year using Ambleside Online with 3 kids. It was challenging, beautiful, frustrating at times, and full of beauty too. Thank you for sharing your update, it was encouraging to hear how your daughter was able to increase her independent reads this year, that's something I am nervous about with my oldest son who is in third grade. I think you did a great job of assessing how your year went and picked good ways to make it work for your family. :)

      Yes, it can be scary to picture the year ahead without being able to imagine the leap in reading, independence, ease of writing, etc. Audio is also a huge help! I think even as my kids get older and read more scheduled books on their own, audio still relieves the mental load compared to reading everything!

    Thank you! I’ve been waiting for an AO update from you🙂 My second grader is a struggling reader and I really appreciate hearing similar stories. For us, I’d say history, math and picture study have been super solid the last year and a half but it’s nature study I wish we were more intentional about! And I can’t wait for my second grader to be reading😞

    • @LizBlueandHazel
      @LizBlueandHazel 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You’re def not alone with a “later” reader! So much progress can be made in a year! Good job staying consistent with those 3 subjects. For nature study, it’s always good to ask what has kept it out of rotation. Lack of easy to find info, or lack of it being on the schedule, or lack of outside time being intentional to observe what you see, etc. That’s us too right now so I get it!

  • @SaraiDeLaCruz-e9d

    Hi! Just wanted to say i have a second grader doing Y1 with his sister, who also struggled with his reading. He is still reading through easy readers as well but i give him a couple more challenging books for him like the little bear books or frog and friends and i feel like just having him read every day to practice his reading more is helping. I’d share something that’s going well for us is our morning with the hymns, bible, poetry and recitations. I love that it’s become a routine for us as a family. Something that i haven’t gotten to is composer study and nature study. Just haven’t been able to get all four kids out with a 1 and 2 year old in the mix. I hope to do it more when spring comes around and warms up around here.

      I don’t, but I think I talk about it in some of my AO update videos. We couldn’t do both well, because I couldn’t seem to fit in extra chapter books into their schedule or mine. AO was too full as is for us so we trimmed books from each child’s schedule. This year I ended up combining literature reads for my oldest 2 from AO, and in place of the darts and arrows we’re doing fix it grammar plus all about spelling for 4th and 5th grade. Hope that helps!

    This was extremely helpful. While we have been doing Charlotte Mason since the beginning, we have only ever done oral narration. Thanks for the encouragement to take it slow.

      @LizBlueandHazel 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Glad this helped. I now have two kids doing this (year 4 & 5). The older usually does very short written narrations (he is a long winded oral narrator but doesn’t like writing as much), while the younger does longer written narrations and generally writes faster. I don’t mention it or emphasize it, or correct spelling. They’re both improving, and I’m happy to see progress a year later. I’m ready to get them both doing 2/week, but not in a rush. I would like to see more creative writing happening though and not just written narrations …How do y’all incorporate writing for fun in a Charlotte Mason homeschool?

    I find too that Ambleside Online was tooo much. Even though a book takes 15-20 mins each but has tons of books each day (even if not all are done daily). I do like some of the Charlotte Mason components like reading good quality literature, narrations, copywork, and short lessons. So we still implement all that cept pick and choose the books.

      Good for you making changes that suit y’all’s family. This year we’ve found a much more peaceful way to still do AO but cut back. We are combining a few literature books with year 4&5 family style (like King Arthur and Kim) which means not getting to all of them from all years but I’m ok with that. It brings back the family read time I miss and lightens the schedule a bit. We’ve also just made peace with slashing a few books when needed. Having each in their own history year has been awesome as they become independent readers…they’re doing those books on their own more and more and not waiting on me to read. Hope y’all have a great year and enjoy the books you picked!

    Hi Liz! I love your channel. It’s so nice seeing how another Mom is implementing AO with her kiddos. After having a baby I’ve gotten really off track with my eldest(8, and 7 and 6 year olds) flying by the seat of my pants has caused me to drop a lot of reading and combine things that I didn’t want to at the beginning of the year. Is there a way you edit your schedule digitally to incorporate your changes or do you just edit the paper copies as you go? I’d also love to know how you do record keeping! Thats an area that really overwhelms me day to day.

    • @LizBlueandHazel
      @LizBlueandHazel หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think I could do a video soon for you on how we’ve made changes and edited the schedule a bit. I bet there’s a few others wondering the same! I don’t digitally edit the schedules provided on AO website, though there’s an editable version on there you could download. I just do it for now on the paper. I color in the readings we do as we go. For records, I’ve never lived in a state that required them, but we do keep the colored in schedule sheets as record of what we’ve done, and I want to get back to what we used to do for recording which is just writing down what we’ve done that day (besides readings) in a cheap planner. It’s called reverse planning and is where I could jot down family read alouds, timeline entry, crafts, etc. Hope that helps a little bit and congrats on your baby!!

    So does that first page that’s what you do together for the lesson replace a bunch of the teacher portion like in the previous levels?

    • @LizBlueandHazel
      @LizBlueandHazel หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’ll still use the teachers guide to tell you what to do for the ‘together’ page. It’s not always obvious what to do without the guide. But I do feel like level 3 (and level 4) use the first page to give you more visuals for explaining, as well as a few problems to practice together. Overall, there’s fewer manipulatives to pull out it seems. For example, maybe instead of you setting down cards and reading the teachers guide for what to say, the first page now would have a picture of the cards and you’d still read the teacher’s guide for what to say, if that makes sense.

      I agree on the home instructors guide. I have sat there for 15 mins confused at to how to go about explaining the concept and I will eventually get it but it does feel like I’m losing precious time. It’s very frustrating and it’s 1st grade! It shouldn’t be this confusing I think.

      Two of my younger kids have loved Math with Confidence at level 1! You might like some of my other Math with Confidence videos if you’re considering using it. We’ve never used Math Mammoth for younger years though. If you’re not loving Singapore it’s a good time to switch while he’s young!

    • @AM-xi1lh
      @AM-xi1lh 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have used Both MWC and MM grade 1-3rd. My feedback: Math Mammoth is to the point and I prefer their mental math approaches. My kids are confident in math heading into 4th grade. We've tried others and they were feeling insecure as littles. It's visual with optional videos, games, hands on. key word: optional. MWC Pros: If you have a hands-on learner that likes a splash of color then this is your jam. Each unit has a different color border. This almost feels like a reward to kids to show how far they've come. It spirals. it's pretty but not cluttered. Those are all the traits I like about it. Cons: teacher manual is cumbersome and b/w. I feel it's *too easy* but then there's retention issues without the use of critical talk and game play which, if your child dislikes the discussions and hands on lectures, then this may fall flat over time. It will be too easy for gifted kids. Yet excellent for anxious mathies who want more engagement with their parents at a calmer pace. MWC didn't work for us because the bread and butter of the program isn't how any of my kids prefer to be taught. They like independent work.

    can we use the same card over and over? deleting the previous story/music and upload a new one?

      Yes! So technically you could just own one ‘make your own card’ and replace what’s on it. We do that all the time.

    I have not found this resource user friendly. I forgot the username and struggling to log in or get support

      Too bad support has been sub par. Sorry to hear. I also cannot for the life of me remember my kids usernames and passwords (they assign very strange usernames too!), so we end up getting to their accounts by first logging in through my parent account and then I’ll choose one of their profiles to go to.
