I worked one of his concerts I told the crew when he sang “He Stopped Loving Her Today “ I would go off by myself. One month before this song came out my husband at the age of 33 had a heartache and passed. Driving down the road loving his music of course I did not know what the song was about just yet. When he sang They Put A Wreath upone his door I jerk the car off the road and cried it seemed like forever. Then all these years later I worked his concert. I just sat in my little spot and again seemed like I cried forever. Can .you even imagine that you would ever come this close to the man who sang this song. Another very great song is “How Can I Help You Say Goodbye “. I had the chorus put on my mom’s headstone. Sang by Pattie Loveless “ it will break your heart if you loved your mom as much as I do. I have never been able to “ Say Goodbye “
I am a George Jones fan by the grace of God. How empty my life would have been if it had not been touched by George Jones. I am so grateful that I was alive on this earth when Mr. Jones was. A beautiful man who truly wrote beautiful heart touching and heartbreaking songs. RIP.
HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY is not ONE of the greatest country songs of all time! it is THE GREATEST COUNTRY SONG of all times! Right there with THE GRAND TOUR, THE DOOR and THE BATTLE, and so many more, The Possum did it all and is truly missed by so many fans 11 years later! Thanks so much for bringing this forward!
It's a great one, but I'm so lonesome I could cry by Hank William's is the greatest all time. That's a great song, but when it comes to Jones songs it's not even at the top in my mind. There are many musicore recordings and even earlier Starday recordings that are superior. She thinks I still care and open pit mine are better.
I was lucky enough to see George live in Pensacola FL sometime around 2000 or 2001. It was a masterful performance. He was well past his prime, but my God he held the audience in the palm of his hand. But while he was in his 40's and 50's he was at the peak of his power. He is the greatest country music singer of all time, and that will remain so forever.
I was also lucky enough to see him, maybe 4 or 5 years before he passed. He was in his 70's and didn't move around much on stage anymore, but to me his voice still sounded great. I saw him at a little outdoor venue called Indian Ranch, in Webster, MA. It's a small venue, right on a lake, with probably 1200 or 1500 seats. It's a great place to see a concert, but it kind of saddened me that a legend like Jones was so underappreciated that he was playing to such small crowds, while so many second rate acts fill huge arenas. I still have a tee shirt I bought that day. IT doesn't fit, but I'll never throw it out.
When Johnny Cash was asked who his favorite country singer was, he said “you mean besides George Jones, right?” He was your favorite country singer’s favorite country singer. Jones didn’t write many songs, but he could interpret them better than anyone. In his autobiography he talks about how he imagined himself in the lyrics’ story while singing, which definitely contributed to how much emotion pours through the microphone. He also said 95% of his recordings were done drunk haha but we all knew that 😉
And Frank Sinatra said, George was the second best singer ever. Even Waylon said if we all sounded like we wanted “we would sound like George Jones” ♥️🎵♥️
For me he is the best country music artist and one of the if not the greatest artist of any genre. I mostly appreciate how his soul and experiences are poured through his music. He has a way of making me feel the struggles and the pain associated with heart break mostly associated with addiction. One very important factor that was highlighted in this he book The Grand Tour by Rich Kienzle was that when his father went on his alcoholic benders he would make George perform for him and guests for entertainment. It was described that all of the kids would get whipped if they didn’t comply and the dad liked hearing the youngest George the most so George would often perform to protect his siblings. It is said throughout that George’s gift was also his curse and that he battled with this and substances throughout his life never feeling good enough.
And in today's Country Music world, they would have sent him home and told him not to come back when he hit town. The music these days can't even spell Country, much less sound like it. Thank God for TH-cam, Sirius XM, Pandora and the like. Murder on Music Row called it right on the barrelhead. They killed Country Music, cut out it's heart and soul. They got away with murder, down on Music Row.
Being a child of the 60's My Momma loved George, we were prisoners in the car, she listened to Country Loud.. I was ecstatic when I finally got a radio of my own. ,Life has its struggles, I would have to fight my own demons and alcohol. Lots of honky tonk bars, bar fights, missed days of work. The teamsters sent me to rehab. I didn't have a clue what it was or what was coming. I turned back to George and his familiar sound, George just understood and Jimmy Swagget was trying to save me soul. I still listen to George, I cried the day he died, there Wil NEVER be another George Jones.
I can't say George is my all-time favorite, but his heartbreak song, "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is a freaking MASTERPIECE! One of the best songs of ANY genre! (And this comes from someone who loves Rock, Soul, R&B, Blues -- just about any type of music). As a child of the 60s, I grew up listening to Country originals like George, and I must have sung along with "He Stopped Loving Her" a thousand times. And I STILL can't finish it without crying!

Him and my Dad were the same age and dad loved him. I remember when I was a young boy sitting in the living room with dad and listening to his records of Jones and other country artist of the day. My dad had tons of records but I knew even then at my young age there was something so special about George Jones. RIP POSSUM
The starday and musicore years are the best, he had some good noteworthy songs in the late 70's-80's but you can't touch the early stuff. She thinks I still care, Open pit mine, and Burn another Honky tonk down are amazing. Warm red wine is an amazing cover , and one of my favorite Jones recordings.
@@RichardGuy-bn4td I wouldn't bet on any so-called quote by a musician or a politician as being true. Both like to talk, both pander to their audience, both contradict themselves, and neither ever let the truth get in the way of a good story.
Great video. Been lovn' George Jones since i was a kid in the 60s. I had a little AM radio I used to listen to country music on when I was kid. I always got excited when GJ songs came on!
I would have waited, like you. Lucky for me, he showed up on time and ready every time. One time, a short while before show time, two men came out onto the stage carrying a small armchair and table, which they set downstage left, with the chair at a convenient angle to the microphone. A couple of minutes later, one of them came back out with Miss Nancy on his arm. She sat through the entire set, calmly composed. Every once in a while, their eyes met. That interaction added another dimension to the performance.
I think it was Roy Acuff who said, George is the only man I ever knew who tried to destroy himself and couldn’t do it! Hands down, when George sang, they all can sit down.
He is to me. I would say almost untouchable 59' to 64'. Ever heard him hit the note in the last refrain of "rush up" the stairs in "A day in the life of a fool"
Nobody could sing and phrase like George Jones, he would hold on to a single word and bend a stretch that word for all it was worth, he would put so much emotion in his ballads.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sung He Stopped Loving Her Today since I first heard it. And I’ve been asked to sing it often. George was one of my favorites!
This is an intelligently presented biographical sketch, beautifully edited and seemingly accurate, and narrated by a nice human voice. This is an amazingly well done video. I'm getting old but I remember George having hits from the time I was a kid until I had children of my own. This is a good flashback.
I had hoped to see him in Frankfurt/Germany in 1981. Unfortunately he was still "No-Show-Jones" at the time. So I never saw him live. But to me he is still the greatest country singer of all times. And I would say that Alan Jackson is a worthy succesor.

His crescendo in that performance was transcending. There was a video of him singing angel band with a group of artists singing behind him. You can hear his voice resonating over them all. I would say maybe 76', can't find it anywhere now.

He Stopped Loving Her Today is one of the best Country Music Songs of ALL TIME & is one of my Husband’s favorite songs & mine & his favorites is Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes & it is also Iconic cause we’re still waiting for someone that’s able to fill George & Conway’s (Hello Darlin) shoes among others. There are some that have come close & those that have left shoes of their own to fill like George Strait, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, Randy Travis, to name a few. Country, thanks ( no thanks ) to Record Label Execs & Country Radio is changing Country to Pop/Rap/Hip Hop not real COUNTRY, they won’t Sign Real Country Artist, won’t Play them on Radio & say People/Fans don’t want to hear it & that’s not true & most real Country Fans listen to the stations that play the old Country Music & listen to New Real Country Artists on TH-cam & TikTok & they are gaining Popularity & Fame & Fans on those outlets. 👏👏👏👏🎶🎵🎶🎤🎶🎵🎶🎤🎶🎵🎶
Actually the grand tour tells a story of a man who lost his wife and their child who both pass during childbirth. “There’s her rings all her things and her clothes in the closet like she left them when she tore my world apart, as you leave you’ll see the nursery, she left me without mercy, taking nothing but our baby and my heart”
Even though I am a huge fan of George Jones, and even think he could be considered the "king" of country music, for some reason I never cared for the song He STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY. I don't know why, it just doesn't do it for me, and is actually one of my least favorite of his songs. Even though he was great throughout his career, for me his stuff from the 60's and 70's is the best. It really has that "real country" sound I go for. Like for example: A GIRL I USED TO KNOW, WALK THROUGH THIS WORLD WITH ME. WINDOW UP ABOVE, THE GRAND TOUR, A MAN CAN BE A DRUNK SOMETIMES, LOVING YOU COULD NEVER..., and many many more from these years. In more recent decades none of the country music, from any artists, sounds as good as the 60's and 70's. And now it's basically gone! So sad!
I think you really need to listen to his early period. 57' through 64' Then you will really understand his range and spectacular tonation. Your missing your mark man, his vocal ability was profound. Sinatra even said he had the second best, white male voice in America in the early sixties.
I worked one of his concerts I told the crew when he sang “He Stopped Loving Her Today “ I would go off by myself. 👏👏👏👏🎶🎵🎶🎤🎶🎵🎶🎤🎶🎵🎶
young man you forgot many songs and lastly just when you thought his career was dead he made you realize it was just playin possum
Hahaha too many good songs to mention it’s hard to list. Thanks for watching!
George Jones had true country soul.
Jim Carrey needs to do the biopic.
The best!
WTF?! YOU EVEN HAVE TO ASK? OF FREAKING COURSE, HE'S THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME! DAMN!
I still have the album with this cover picture on it
That’s so awesome
So sad!
George didn't like it when he first heard it
@@adamprice3466 Yes, I have heard that too. He thought it was too sad! Lol. There are lots of his songs I would consider sadder than that one.
I think you really need to listen to his early period. 57' through 64' Then you will really understand his range and spectacular tonation. Your missing your mark man, his vocal ability was profound. Sinatra even said he had the second best, white male voice in America in the early sixties.
You should do a vid like this on Keith Whitley that would be great
Possum is Timeless
