Carol Douglas - aka Carolyn Strickland and Carolyn Cooke - was born in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York. She is the daughter of Minnie Newsome, a jazz performer who has been cited as the inspiration for the Cab Calloway classic "Minnie the Moocher"; Douglas' father was a mortician. Sam Cooke was Douglas' cousin. At the age of 10 Douglas was a contestant and winner on the game show Name That Tune and says "Ebony followed my career for the next three years".
Douglas attended the Willard May School for professional children and afterwards the Quintanos High School for young professionals alongside Gregory Hines, Bernadette Peters, Carol Lynley and Patty Duke. While in high school Douglas sang in a female trio named April May & June who were signed as a management client by Little Anthony and the Imperials.
Douglas made a one-off recording in 1963 for RCA Victor cutting the single "I Don't Mind (Being Your Fool)" under the name Carolyn Cooke: becoming pregnant with her first son at age 15 ended RCA's interest in promoting her.
Douglas also cut several jingles for TV commercials - "[I] used to do voiceovers for Ideal Toys and General Mills with Bernadette Peters" - but recalls: "I never thought I would be a singer", and for most of the 1960s Douglas pursued an acting career, appearing in an episode of her classmate's The Patty Duke Show but mostly acting in theatrical productions beginning with One Tuesday Morning starring Clarice Taylor. Later Douglas understudied Jonelle Allen in the off-Broadway production of The Life of Mary McCloud Bethune and co-starred with James Earl Jones and Cicely Tyson in the play Moon on a Rainbow Shawl.

starting at age 4, when my son was in pre-k, i consciously decided to shield him from the vulgarity and smut of (c)rap "music" which was mega popular among his school mates. i introduced him to the cartoon "yellow submarine" and havent looked back since. he passed me up a long time ago and is now listening to dixieland and other forms of jazz from 50 to 100 years ago and everything in between. i taught him that there are dozens of genres worldwide. and now with the availability of youtube and the internet THERE IS NO EXCUSE to be restricted to corporate dribble like britney and m&m put out year after year and re-hashing of songs from video games, tv commercials, and dumbin-down popular movies....lil bro

@@sacollectiblesii I have news for you. When the bands and musicians you refer to first came out, they were just as well regarded as "junk corporate dribble" by people who only highly praised the music that came out before them. Everybody's stuck on nostalgia and thinks the past is better than the present. Meh... just enjoy it all and be glad you had or have it.

My sister, cousin and I loved putting on those "shows". Disco, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, Mary Wells, Gloria Gaynor and of course the Queen herself; Donna Summer were our favorites!
      Oh glory days!

A monster hit, from the truly Early Days of Disco. The vocals, the rhythm, the orchestration - it's all REAL here, not sound beats out of a computer, like dance music today. We hustled our ASSES off to this, in so many different fierce clubs. SO glad I lived where and when I did, that NYC 70s club scene will NEVER BE EQUALLED. I went out five nights a week then, but with music like this, it's no damn wonder. (re-posted)

***** Not to brag - well, okay, maybe a little - I was a regular at the Garage (Garucci's, we called it then), EVERY Sat, from 79-83. Got into 54 a couple times, the first time being in 79, admittedly AFTER the 78-79 celebrity heyday. But I also hit ALL the big clubs then: Xenon, Limelight, the Gallery, the Loft, New York New York, Infinity, Danceteria, Roseland, the Red Parrot, Better Days...the list is LONG. Because there were SO MANY good clubs then; EVERY night of the week, there were three or four hot spots to choose from (most discos had particular nights that were best there). It was a Time and Place that feels another world today. EVERYBODY, it seemed, got dressed up and went out, every night of the week. Sometimes, when I think about it, I almost question whether it was REALY that great on not - but I KNOW it was. And EVERYBODY who lived it too (and made it through, cause MANY didn't) knows that I speak the truth. Wish you could've experienced it...

@@caroldouglas6913 We had a social club for kids on the lower east-side back then, and it was left up to the kids to put their favorite records in the Jukebox. This song was so beloved that we wore out the vinyl on the 45's like a half-dozen times and had to keep buying new ones. Same for Midnight Love Affair. I still tell kids Donna Summer (RIP) was not the first Queen of Disco; Carol Douglas was. Thanks for these early Disco classics, Carol, still two of my favorites. God bless.

Disco will never be over. It will always live in our minds and hearts. Something like this, that was this big, and this important, and this great, will never die. Oh, for a few years - maybe many years - it'll be considered passé and ridiculous. It will be misrepresented and caricatured and sneered at, or - worse - completely ignored. People will laugh about John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, white polyester suits and platform shoes and people going like *this* but we had nothing to do with those things and still loved disco. Those who didn't understand will never understand: disco was much more, and much better, than all that. Disco was too great, and too much fun, to be gone forever! It's got to come back someday. I just hope it will be in our own lifetimes.
