Sizing a painting stretcher canvas using rabbit skin glue

This demonstration shows a technique for preparing a cotton canvas for priming and painting. This is achieved by applying layers of rabbit skin glue to the surface to stiffen and shrink the canvas around a stretcher frame.

I make my own linen canvas using raw linen, stretchers, copper tacks, rabbit skin glue, followed by oil ground layers. It makes terrific canvas to paint on. Time consuming but worth it.
