“Monster” is the third and final song in The Underworld Saga, marking the end of Act 1 of EPIC. Odysseus, thrown into crisis by Tiresias’ prophecy, reflects on his journey and considers the conflicting philosophies of Polites and Poseidon. In the process, he reflects on the foes he has encountered, seeing their lack of guilt now as a strength that honors their goals, while scorning himself and his own empathetic methods. Finally, he realizes - perhaps misguidedly - what he must become in order to make it home, in a way fulfilling Tiresias’ prophecy: the monster.
