When Judas has the look of disbelief after Jesus refused to have the helmet taken from himself . You hear what sounds like a coin drop . It happened i think a total of 3 times this episode . I believe each time Judas doubts or pushes himself away from Jesus you hear another coin drop signifying him getting closer and closer to betraying jesus for the 30 coins .

@@deb9806 Yes, people like someone to blame to make themselves feel better. We didn't have "go to Jesus to repent" until much later, Peter didn't go to the cross or tomb that we hear of, no words of "I'm sorry" Jesus came to Peter and asked him 3 times if he loved him to erase the 3 denials but even after that, they hid. The Holy Spirit came and then they started their mission. No I don't cast blame, they all lived and worked with him, loved him, but were very human. Any time Jesus could have said No to anyone to be let go. They were begging him to give them something. Judas didn't do that. When Jesus emphasized forgiveness 77 times 7 and on and said on the cross to forgive, he didn't put an * there and say "except this person".
The Roman rules allowed them to force a citizen to carry gear for one mile ONLY. To exceed one mile would actually break military rule. When Jesus said to walk two miles he was switching up the power dynamic. Although not clear in the show walking the second mile would put the Roman soldiers into conflict with own rules, potential leading to issues the military leadership. Similarly turning the other cheek is also a method of switching up the power play. A Roman or slave owner could strike a citizen or slave across the face with back of right hand hitting the right cheek. A back handed slap showed the power difference between each person. But by turning and presenting the left cheek, a back handed slap was no longer possible. The Roman or slave master would have to ball up his right hand and punch the left check. That is only how two equals would fight. The attacker would have to choose to punch or walk away. In either case the citizen or slave would win the moral battle.

Yes; the Roman soldiers were getting confused after that first mile... they even started taking back some of the loads...
One of the things i find so devistatingly sad is that if Judas waited the 3 days, he woukd have seen Jesus risen and had the opportunity to talk to Jesus about the role he had to play and ask forgivness in person. I would like to think Jesus would have told him his part was essential for the forgivenss of the whole world.
I'm sure he did.

That's the reason I watch The Chosen.
I am Catholic but we feel as this priest says "the choice [of Our Lord in making Judas an apostle and companion] darkens the mystery around his eternal fate, knowing that Judas “repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, ‘I have sinned in betraying innocent blood’” (Matt. 27:3-4). Even though he went to hang himself (cf. Matt. 27: 5), it is not up to us to judge his gesture, substituting ourselves for the infinitely merciful and just God.
I am too. I love this story (others not Catholic might not) about suicide St. John Vianney, the famous parish priest of Ars, France, once encountered a woman who was very troubled. Her irreligious husband had died after jumping from a bridge. She worried he was in hell. When he encountered her near his church, Fr. Vianney had no way of knowing about this unfortunate situation, except by a special grace from God. He whispered into her ear the words “he is saved!” The woman was taken aback, so Fr. Vianney repeated himself, saying “I tell you he is saved! He is in purgatory, and you must pray for him. Between the parapet of the bridge and the water he had time to make an act of contrition.” The woman was greatly comforted by this revelation. We can find comfort in it, as well. Judas legacy our Lord knew would be awful but his heart and soul was known only to him and his Father.
I think Jesus said that it would have been better if he (Judas) would have never been born. I prefer to accept Jesus' assessment and words.
@@amgr8ful but they are very careful not to say where he is, and “better never to have been born”, the way I was brought up, was that his legacy would be ugly, and people would despise him. The role he played was not the same as John for instance. That’s an interpretation that’s been wildly interpreted and discussed and no one 100% will ever know until they are with the Lord. I will never, ever send anyone to hell because that is not my job, and Jesus never said those words. I’m Catholic and we don’t condemn him and many saints have said to pray for his soul and the prayers are never for waste, no matter where he is.

When I saw the scene where Jesus and his disciples carried the Roman armor, I thought maybe the writers were humming “Onward Christian Soldiers”.
Despite the humiliation of that scene, I see many fellow Christians now walking into harms way knowing that they walk with Christ regardless if they’re actual soldiers going into battle or missionaries bringing Jesus’ message of salvation.

It is important to remember that Jesus willingly allowed himself to be crucified for all sinners. So our sins caused the crucifixion just as much as Judas’ sinful choices. Therefore, if Judas truly repented his choices/sins, he is as worthy of God’s forgiveness as we are.

What you didn’t mention was the most important comparison between Rabbi Hillel and Rabbi Shanai: On one occasion it happened that a certain non-Jew came before Shammai and said to him, ‘Make me a convert, on condition that you teach me the whole Torah while I stand on one foot.’ Thereupon he repulsed him with the builder's cubit that was in his hand. When he went before Hillel, he said to him, ‘What is hateful to you, do not to your neighbor: that is the whole Torah, the rest is the commentary; go and learn it.’
In other words Hillel is quoted to have taught the Golden Rule. Where do you think Yeshua/Jesus and then the gospel writers got it from?
They told us in the 1st episode that some things are added based on historic culture. You watch other ficticious movies. They NEVER said it was the exact Bible. I love that Matthew acts Autistic. I always wondered how he as a Hebrew boy could betray his people, and keep track of so many genetics. This is a possibility.

This was the best episode yet of the 4th season. You know a show is so powerful that it makes you almost weep in amazement. What was said in this episode was so profound, I had to rewind it many times to hear it again. I wouldn't even say it's believing, it just makes sense. It's just real. I find it really sad that people just say it was made up, it was embellished, changed over time. I don't believe this at all. I think it is basically history , it did not have to happen exactly like what is written, but it is surely very close to it. 2,000 years ago is like yesterday really

Brandon, do you have any Bible study or small group guide you would recommend on Judas? The Chosen has me fascinated with him. How many times have we stolen from Jesus with our tithe or offerings? I believe he loved Jesus but he was wrapped in his own (business) understanding, like the pharisees were wrapped in religion, not Jesus' way. What made Judas "evil" vs. Peter who also rejected Jesus is he didn't go back to Jesus. He let his shame and guilt determine his future. I think we can learn at lot from him.

It seemed to me that characterizing the distinction of the Pharisees and Sadducees as the P. being more literal and the S. more figurative misrepresents the greatest distinction between the two. Both were extremely literal. Look at their views on the execution of the daughter of a priest for fornication. The Law says to burn her to death. They argued over the use of molten gold, burning her from the inside out, or metal ingots, burning her from the outside in. More pronounce appears to be the authority they appealed to. The P. to advocated for both The Law, Prophets and Writings, plus The Oral Law. The S. limited the authority the 5 Books of Moses. It helps to remember that both sects held their interpretations, not as coming from their insights and reasoning, but as the sole valid understanding of the Law as revealed by God to men.
Respectfully, Jesus looks ridiculous with the helmet on. The ladies as well. But when a Roman soldier says carry their gear, there’s not much room for debate

I don't like how Judas and silver are so intertwined when he threw it away. If money and not the love of the man he hurt was so important, he would have taken the money, shrugged it off and went on with his life. Money was never the issue
I'm sorry; Judas regretting his mistake did not keep Jesus from being crucified. Some mistakes are that bad. Saying sorry afterwards doesn't necessarily reverse the damage.

@@marjorymsuku9312I don’t think that’s what OP meant- OP is saying that the issue for Judas goes beyond money. I don’t know why it wasn’t obvious reading the Bible because thinking about it it really should have been but when you think about it Judas likely had some type of mental health issue that was trying to be reconciled (I mean mentally healthy people don’t commit suicide). If not mental health then at the very least he wasn’t mentally stable.

2:35 Were Shemai and Hilel both Pharissees? They come across as the Calvinists vs. Armenians among Protestants, whereas the Saducees vs. Pharissees remind me of the Catholics vs. Protestants.
But Dallas said it's not a Bible written show, but some based on what truth.
I love and believe that the portrayal of Jesus, and the lack of visual horrific violence that all have really exaggerated the violence.
I believe in my heart that this is much more accurately to his true life with his disciples 💗
Love your enemy, not hate him. That's the real wisdom from the scene with the soldiers. He disarmed their disgust for the Jews.

I appreciated the Roman soldiers. As most battle hardened men, they were prone to vulgar jokes.
I wonder how many 'christians' took offense to the 'they work for the tips' joke being included in the script.
What I liked was that Jesus took no offense. Even though the soldiers were brash, rude, and vulgar, Jesus treated them with quiet love. He carried their gear farther.
Rough men, the coarse, the rude, they all need Jesus too. We must not turn these people away by being offended by them. We are no better than them.
Brandon, I appreciate your teaching, however If I may respectfully offer a word of correction. It was Hillel, not shemai that Jesus agreed with. In both the word and the spirit of the law and held the conservative view of marriage.
To be honest...people have their own views. Read the bible and write whatever you think happened within that gap theory.

Do you all know that Jesus has his Prophet here speaking & teaching for Jesus? Most people don't believe who the Prophet is and when they hear the truth, they don't believe it even when it's proven right in front of them by the Word of the Lord God/Jesus Christ. Seek the Lord with all your heart.

The Sadducees were the old school Jews. The ones left behind after the Babylonian exile. That's why they didn't believe in angels and demons, heaven and hell or a Holy Spirit. The Pharisees was the sect that returned from Babylon after being influenced by the Persian religion, Pharisee=Parsi. We owe much of our Christian beliefs from this syncretism of Judaism and Zoroastrianism.
Mmm, I'm pretty sure we owe our Christian beliefs to Jesus. He was more than willing to correct both the Pharasees and Sadducees when they got things wrong. Just because the Pharasees got their beliefs partially from Persia doesn't mean Christians get our beliefs from them.

Each time they were conquered a foreign nation imparted a new theological concept into their religion. Consider Alexander's role in the Hellenization of the Jews. So massive that God had to start communicating in Greek for the New Testament. Traditionally, a Messiah would have been a warrior King like David or Cyrus, but after Judaism syncretized with the Greek religion, now He’s half man, half god like Hercules, Perseus or Achilles. And he’s got all the same stories as well, a god impregnates a mortal woman. He escapes a murderous King as a child and is raised by a foster father. He uses his powers to perform incredible feats. At the end of his life his body disappears and he joins his Father on Mount Olympus. These aren’t coincidences. It’s syncretism and it happens to all religions.

I honestly don't watch this movie because they are adding and subtracting to the word, meaning improving the original works. Is not real for me.
It’s not intended to be real. They say it again and again it’s not the Bible it’s television, it is intended to inspire you to open the Bible. The Sermon of the Mount got me into the Bible. I have been reading since I saw that in the show. Opened up what I had missed my entire life with the Word.
