    Great way to remove the chuck. One thought is that if you reverse the procedure and tighten the 4jaw chuck a bit it might give you more clearance to install the retainers

    Excellent idea with the strap wrench. Also you could install a threaded stud with a wing nut for easier removal of the pulley covers.

    My first experience with metal lathes was in the early 60s, old school, I am now 83, just received my grizzly G0602. I have not owned a lathe in 20 years, I have a project I need to work on. I thought I would make a suggestion, On the end COVER DOOR, cut out the material to the whole. You will not have to remove the screw each time you open and shut the door.
    PS. I like yours strap wrench suggestion.

    This is brilliant! Helped me prize a stubborn chuck off of my old craftsman.

    Good idea on the strap wrench.
    Steady pressure is a very bad thing. Anything that is threaded should be broken free with a sharp, hard shock.
    Using steady pressure can easily bend pulleys and deform the chuck.
    Chuck something like a big allen wrench into the chuck, attach the strap wrench and pull it up tight against something solid (block of wood wedged in works well), then while putting solid tension on the chuck, strike the allen wrench with a hammer (a metal hammer, brass dead blow is the best, do not use a soft mallet) to break it free. Repeat until it comes loose.
    I have broken bolts torqued to over 600 foot pounds free this way with no damage and little effort using a big dead blow against a breaker bar close to the socket.

    Add a piece of copy paper or very thin cardboard that`s been soaked in oil between the chucks backplate and the spindles register. That stops the chuck from tightening up on the spindle threads so it`s then a problem to remove. That doesn`t solve the initial chuck removal if it was put on too tight at the factory of course. But it will keep it from happening again.

    should you have a C spanner for holding the head stock spindle ? fitting in the hole they tell you to put the chuck key tommy bar in. A threaded on chuck can get very tight when doing an intermittent cut.

    Thank you for the video. I'm thinking that if you utilized another strap wrench on the chuck itself, that would work as well, and you would further minimize potential damage to the chuck and or trueness of the jaws.

    If you have a second strap wrench, that would be a great solution. Thanks for the recommendation.

    I am thinking of purchasing the Grizzly 0602 and I'm mainly going to be using it for threading (female and male threads) aluminum or even stainless and maybe titanium as well. I have not really come across of any video demonstrating on threading with this specific lathe. Can you demo on threading on this lathe? will very much appreciate.

    This is exactly how I did mine (although I didn't put a board down and dinged the waze, but it runs smoothly across it after a bit of sanding anyway). Mine still took some serious force, it was so stuck I almost pooped my pants trying to get it loose.

  • @mefedler

    That's a good solution if your chuck comes off easily. The technique I showed here is for the first time you try to take the chuck off and it's stuck. Mine was quite difficult go get off. Thanks for watching and leaving another good tip.

    Hi. One cuestion, can you tell me the width of that 3 jaws chuck. I’m going to make a chuck spider and I need that info...Thanks

    • @mefedler
      @mefedler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are asking for the diameter of the chuck, it is just under 5 inches. Mine measures 4.94 inches.

    Does this lathe allow you run a tube through the chuck and past the gears ? I notices your cover has a hole for it. Thanks.

    • @mefedler
      @mefedler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +FrustratedBaboon Yes, there is a 1 inch hole through the spindle.

    Hopefully you won't have to go to that drastic step. Thanks for watching.

    Chuck a grade 2 bolt in jaws and use impact . Soft bolt won't damage jaws. Will shock Chuck lose

    I am planing to use my drew bar SB9 for it

    I was thinking that a steel bar or a steel pipe would be more effective than a crescent wrench.

    Chuck a bar in the jaws (sideways) and pull it down. That's what I do with stuck chucks on wood lathes.

    • @mefedler
      @mefedler  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem was holding the pulley side without damaging it. The chuck side is fairly easy to hold. Thanks for the tip.

    My three-jaw chuck came off effortlessly, but now the faceplate is stuck. I love how the manual says to use "chuck keys" and shows keys for these lathe chucks, but the holes on the spindle are obviously way too small for these keys. I used the tommy bar from my mill to get the 3- and then the 4-jaw chucks off, but it ain't doin' nothin' for the faceplate. Of course my old strap wrench was rotten and broke, and it's 3 in the morning. Hey, on the bright side the dog I was going to use to turn between centers didn't remotely fit this faceplate, and was way too big for my stock, so I've wasted a good hour on epic piles of fail. Yay! Oh well. I'll get it all figured out eventually.

    My experience level for lathe work is pretty limited so I may not be the best resource for information. I bought this lathe to learn how to use a metal lathe. I have not devoted enough time to it. (Too many hobbies) I do have several TH-cam resources that may help for general machining.
