Out of the Woods have you ever sawn a log that has been pulled out of a lake / pond ? Maybe something that has been submerged for a decade or so ? Would love to see what’s inside if you have a log like that .

I came across your channel late one night, all innocent of the whole and entire universe of sawyer and turner. What a joy, you and all your brothers are so skilled, learned, and darn right talented in what you do! I have now learned to see a tree in a whole new light. Long ago I worked with a little chainsaw milled "flame" box elder and had not laid eyes on the finished project in 20+ years.
Sadly, in time the red staining oxidizes to a lack luster brown regardless of finish used.
Ive read a great deal about "flame" box elder.
The best commentary Ive read so far was by an author that suggested if it were hermetically sealed then stored in total darkness the red fungus staining may last a bit longer but it aint staying no matter what.
Fer sure gorgeous while it last.

I have some pieces of box elder and Osage orange, both of which I have read loose their color over time due to either oxidization or UV exposure. I've been testing using a combination of penetrating exterior oil, with a UV blocker, and an interior finish to seal and protect the coloring. So far I've had BE and OO sit in a sunny room, not direct sunlight, for a couple months with no color change. It will be interesting to see how they hold up after a year or so.

I hope in the end you have a good yield from this. Box elder is garbage wood - it twists and splits more than anything I've ever used. I've also thrown more money in the trash with box elder than any other specie. Hopefully yours will come out of the kiln looking as good as they did going in.
