      Stay with 4/4 more can be made with it and I would think bigger dollar return. As a carpenter I could do a whole lot it this way.

      Some 5/4 would be a good idea. Better to have choices. Fine looking wood. Planlng is an option as well.

      Depends on your market, which you know far better than anyone out here. The 5/4 boards would sure make some nice heirloom furniture.

    I love watching you sawing pretty much any kind of wood, and those new blades certainly race through everything that you’ve been cutting, but hands down Black Walnut is definately my favourite. The figure and color is amazing and thats what keeps me coming back for more❤️ Thanks again. J🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    I swear t9 God, I’d take a 24”x36” slab, and just sand it, polish it, and hang it on the wall as art!
    Between the steady drone of the saw, and the tranquil music you dub in, It’s great video to watch just before I close my eyes at night.

    I don’t know how I ended up at this channel, but I’m glad I did. I know my family had a big involvement in the lumber industry in the past but I never expected to be listening to videos about sawing wood while I grind away at my job. Thank you for this channel. You can bet that if I’m ever down your way that I’ll cough up the fifty to hang out and see how all of this is done.

    I live in a residential neighborhood known on old maps as OAK FOREST. We have lost hundreds of 100 yro white oaks in the past 5 years. Probably all have been used for firewood. A neighbor brought home beautiful black walnut "firewood" from a large tree that was cut down on UMBC campus about 40 years ago to burn in his wood stove. It made me sick to see the smoke. With his permission I saved a few pieces, and have made pistol grips, and shoulder stocks out of them. I have also purchased black walnut and cherry, machine carved stocks and made black powder rifles using them. I really enjoy your videos.

    I don't really know much about it, but that is one of the very best logs I've seen you mill. Never thought I'd be so entertained by this, but I'm beginning to have thoughts about saving up for an entry level mill to salvage logs around here that are being wasted for firewood, when they could better appreciated a lot longer by wood craftsmen. Thanks for the great job you've done in developing your camera and editing skills, too.

    I am quickly falling in love with this channel, since I have a love for natural wood grain. Your skills and knowledge are amazing, now my dream is to be there when you saw into a log of Eastern Hop Hornbeam (akak Hardhack, Levelwood, etc.). Not big stuff, but it should look nice inside! Keep up the great work, mill Master.

  • @CommercialForest

    The board is so wide with nice heartwood, my vote is for 9/4 ✅.
    Whenever I’m at a big sawmill,I’m always amazed how many cool logs are kicked to the dunnage/boiler fuel pile simply because they are not optimal shape for high-speed commercial sawing operations. Some amazing stuff goes up in smoke, sadly 😞

    There is a trend of mounting a thinner slab on plywood and doing a matching 'foldover' on the edge giving more yield and availability so 5/4 'shares' the beauty for some projects

    The knots have the Halos around them giving a great look for the boards even on the crotch wood.... That Halos and the crotch blend in give the slab a surprising ripple in the wood as 2 water drop into a stream running from other end of the slab!!!!! I know that is mouth full but that is what I see!!!!! Very Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I'm comfortable with my 1st comment.
    BUT, if you have a market for 5/4 boards, then that's YOUR ANSWER.
    Now that I know more, I'd say cut thin boards from both sides AND do 1 or 2 9/4 where the figure is best.
    Love those knots!!
    I can see making a couple wall hangings with them.
    One knot is an alligator eye. The other with 2 knots and the pointed end, looks like a scary ghost face.
    Love me some pretty wood.

      So, 5/4 is 1 inch (4/4) with 1/4 left. Known to those of us in common man land as 1 1/4". So also, 9/4 is lumber-speak for 8/4 with 1/4 left. When reduced, would leave a common-man number of 2 1/4". Unless there is some "baker's dozen" kind of stuff implied when using "sawmill speak" that you have to be "in the know" to understand. Or is it just math that needs math to convert the numbers into understandable metrics?
      Do you call it "one inch", or "four quarter" board?
      I am a machinist, and I call .500 a half inch, and .375 3/8, and so on. Never understood the wood thicknesses. I don't speak in thousandths, just because that's what I work in 98% of the time. Perhaps those working with wood don't care as much, and use the sawmill speak without care, and even with a sense of pride, just BECAUSE it doesn't make ready sense.

    • @paulmurphy612
      @paulmurphy612 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Todd Wall they’re just fractions. In the case of lumber milling they’re not simplified. 4/4 = 1”, 5/4 = 1 1/4”, 8/4 = 2”.

    • @musamor75
      @musamor75 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Todd Wall I do agree with a lot of what you say. However, I wouldn’t take offense to shop talk- it’s basically like slang. It brings those in the know together. Outsiders have to ask questions (and usually pay more). It could be called a form of tribalism- if you’re an anthropologist.

    • @jhsmith22461
      @jhsmith22461 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just to help out a little more for those who are novices at this. A 5/4 will not be 1.25 inches once it's air and kiln dried AND after it's been planned for smoothness. Taking just an 1/8 on each side when it goes through the plane, will leave you at best 1". HTH.

    Nathan, That is some really nice looking walnut. I don't even mind the knots, if they are solid. As for 5/4 vs 9/4, my thinking is you cut what sells best. My feeling is it is the 9/4. But you should always have a little of the 5/4 on hand for the guy that needs that. If you find over time that you begin to sell more of the 5/4, you can always cut more. I have a friend that makes smaller pieces, jewelry boxes, cutting boards, etc. He is always looking for the smaller pieces.
    I love the work you do. 👍
