Red oak lasts a long time on the ground also, it might get a little punk on the outside but after a couple years it’s still wet inside, amazing how long it holds water.
I do Love that saw mounted camera Nathan and those wind chimes! Years back I had cats that disappeared because of coyotes. Some of my cats had been here years and woods smart. Later a neighbor said a guy cleaned out the woods of a dozen coyotes. So I certainly know about all the wondering that goes on and hoping a cat comes back. I think MaMa cat sent messages to you big time and it worked. How an Animal can survive so of the worst conditions is truly amazing. We are all glad to see her back and did wonder where she was. Thanks for another great video. I think we are all waiting for a barn raising! Blessings! DaveyJO in Pa.
Good afternoon Nathan, Glad you got the 2 6" x 6" beams out of that log. There also appears to be some nice boards. When I had my millwork business, we made some 2-1/4" thick exterior stile and rail panel doors out of white oak. Those doors faced East. Fifteen years after installation, the home owner complained because one of the bottom panel on the exterior side a 3/16" check in the panel. Because I I made the panels laminated, the check didn't go through to the interior panel. White oak will last a long time!
What are you painting on the end of the logs at the very end of the video? Thanks for all you do and I have learned so much from watching your saw mill operation.
Yahoo, a new drying shed! That'll be a fun happening!!!---I was worried you were flooded out, I'd been seeing all the rain in your part of the world. Phew, I didn't see any flooding in your opening.---Sure loved the end music...mmm!
@@bethfrazier414 We're so dry in my area of Coastal California, and again today, as I passed over the bridge, I was wishing we had some more monumental rain so that the dam downstream would have to release water, that would then clear away all the accumulated debris, and thin out the willows that have been allowed to clog the route, to protect a frog...uff da.
Momma Cat is a lucky girl. You have some solid posts for the barn. Looking forward to seeing it go up. Will you do a vid on the concrete pours and builds for the sheds? Stay safe Nathan.
I enjoyed that video as I do all of them. I live down the way just a bit from you in the mountains and I am so glad the rain has quit for now. I work outside and it has just killed my business. Anyway thank you for another wonderful video of craftsmanship. And I am so glad momma cat is safe. Have a good week!
Hi Nathan: Could you mention the model of the Stihl battery operated chain saw that you use please. Looks like it could be right up my alley. Thanks, love your videos - always very well done.
Funny thing is when you were talking about mama cat,she looked over at you as to say,you telling that story again....lol...glad she is ok. Nice work on that white oak.
As a cat man, what I like is how M-C enjoys being with you showing that you are kind to her. As they say, 'you can tell a lot about the humanity of a person by how they treat animals...'
Mr. Elliot could you lay a tarp down along the mill to allow the saw dust to collect on top . Then when you are done drag it out to a field and flip it over and repeat?
On a separate note, since you are not that far away, you may want to check with Wilson, Putnam, and Davidson counties to see if you can pick up any down trees from their “temporary vegetation debris holding areas” (debris from the tornados).
Great video again bud. Keep it up most definitely cannot wait to see the work on the barn 👍🏻..Praise the Lord on the sunshine! Not to mention your safety from the bad weather
Learning the process. When you were sawing the 1 inch slabs wouldn't it have been better to have the grain at a 90°from the cut. Since you cut it down to the pith if left flat and cut 1x13ish then stud on end and ripped the pith out. Just curious. Thanks for the great videos!!!
Nice video. Would you consider doing a tutorial of the controls and how to program your sawmill? I would love to learn more about what’s happening in the cockpit during the cutting. Thx
I know what you mean about all the rain this year. We've really had it this year. Terrible down here in west central Georgia, probably the same rain-train that comes up you way. I know you are anxious to get started on your shed but you just can't move around the fields when it is so boggy.
Lovely bit of white oak Nathan. Looking forward to seeing your new barn. Glad Momma cat is doing alright. Lucky cat!! Was that you on the banjo? Do you still play? All the very best Graham 🇬🇧🇬🇧
This is a nice diversion from practicing guitar and studying guitar theory. Really nice videos Nathan! I enjoy the **** out of them, and I really like the God's Country footage at the end. Makes me want to grab an old pole and go fishin.
My neighbor hired a man to hunt coyotes - we are over the ridge from you. So our outdoors cats are pretty safe climbing trees and staying in tiles under the road! Glad momma cat is ok.
Praise the Lord that Mama cat is ok. I have noticed that I haven't seen her for a while. OMG how worried you all must have been. And yes I would have been devastated to hear that she had passed and that it could have been with coyotes. Sorry for such a long rant, but you know me about Mama cat. 🐈
Glad to hear about Momma Cat. We had that happen one time where one of our cats got locked in the old milking stall along side the barn. Turned out she was in there a month before we opened it back up to get some milk cans out for sale. She was just as fat as can be and there wasn't a mouse to be found!
I was wondering when you were gonna build some sheds since you can cut all the lumber you want! HAHA! Will be watching to see what you come up with, need the same a drying shed
love your videos! For some reason they seem to relax me! And I kind of dream I could do this. And not have to go to my job. Lol. Quick question. How do you know how far to measure away from the pith to know it won't affect the wood. does the pith affect different type of woods differently
Many of the boards you have in there are almost a year old, aren’t they? When do you plan to put them in the kiln and get them ready to sell? All that beautiful walnut, somebody’s going to be lucky to get them.
Aww man, hate to hear that that is what happened to the mama cat. Dang cats anyway. Have had a couple cats go off for a few days, then I would wonder what the heck, and then here they would show up... Great video on the free of heart aspect...

Phew, Momma Cat, don't get any more daft ideas. Just because Nathan got you out of a scrape this time doesn't mean you have to push your luck! I've always thought that cats were smarter than dogs but getting locked in a barn for a month? There are better ways to diet! Smart work on that oak, Nathan, I like seeing you figure out how to get the best from a log. But would you mind keeping the rain in Tennessee? We've had quite a bit here in the UK and have got fed up with it, half the country has been under water.

thanks, appreciate you watching,
Minnesota has been seeing amazing weather this past week. I cross my fingers to get something to mill this weekend.
That is a very nice White Oak log, happy to hear the shed is about to go up.
Listening to those frogs singing would be so nice in the evening.
I'm so glad Momma Cat is ok!
That's quite a story about Momma Cat. Great to see her back again.
Yes it was!
Always enjoy your videos. Good to see someone who cares for and about their animals.

haha yeah I think mama ate some of those also,
I was wondering why it was skinny. Doesn’t it hunt? No mice or other rodents?
great video,
Nathan I have never heard a log that was circumsawed. That's a very creative way to put it. I am not as familiar with that type of sawing.
A log cut with a circular saw is not circumsized...it's CIRCUMSAWED!!!...great new terminology....lol. Keep it going!
You are getting good on Camera shots...Split screen W0W....That GoPro video is much clearer than the other camera....Thanks very much...Saw safe...!

Did you ever consider that the angle on that pullback bar was the cause of the wood slabs angling out, or not the issue?
What are the loose pieces hanging down in back of the saw for? Are they oem dangles for safety?
guide the boards back,
I was wondering when you were gonna build some sheds since you can cut all the lumber you want! HAHA! Will be watching to see what you come up with, need the same a drying shed
What moisture content would you recommend for framing wood? 2x4's 2x6'S for interior framing. Glad to hear about momma cat.
You really cut the pith out of that wood! Glad you found mama cat!

Do you trade out saw blades as needed or keep them on till they're done with?
Keep them And resharpen

Is the mill motor supposed to camber when it's cutting?
Yes
Why did the engine tilt like that? 18:56
So it can engage the drive on the band saw blade...!

I swear, you must keep half the county's wood stoves supplied in slab wood!
What did mama cat do for water?
luckily there was a few buckets of water in the barn,
How did she survive in the barn for so long without food and especially water?
there was a bucket of water in the barn, she ate mice also during that time,
Out of the Woods I’m glad she made it. That’s one lucky cat. lol
Did you have to level the log on sawmill in order to remove the pith on both ends?
Ben Meardith yes unless the pith is straight
Raining outside again here... The log cabin is white oak, termites don't even like it lol
crazy, snowing here today, white oak good!!
Why do you paint the ends?
That's a product called Anchorseal. It puts a wax coating on the ends of timber to help keep the moisture in and prevent checking.
