As live entertainment live on stage . Ted Neeley singing Gethsemane is totally excellent. Any one who compares or criticised him has no idea of how talented he is doing this number. Over 1700 times he has sung it, thrilling people all around the world. To standing ovations, bringing tears to many people's eyes. He deserves every accolade that can be handed out.
I'm so glad I got to see Ted and Carl many years ago - front row. I pointed at Carl during the bows and he pointed back. Those two were unreal. There will never be two better than them.
This is a Live soundboard recording. NO autotune and maybe no additional effects seem to be used. Still pretty much the definitive interpretation by a once in a generation singer, imho.
ted and carl i have had the pleasure of meeting carl just at the 25th ann show before the cancer in the movie white suit i was such a fan girl!! and ted too and now ive seen and met and spoken to Ted many many times hes a good acquaintance,he is a lovely lovely man. and they had a great chemistry live.. .
For me, this song really needs to be sung by someone who knows how to break their voice, and scream like a rocker. Balsamo and so many other guys try to get away with a falsetto, and no one has time for that...haha.
I'll be honest with you. Having loved Ted Neeley's portrail of Jesus for years now, I am not interested in seeing any other artist perform the role. Ted is the very essence of the character. No one else comes close. Not even remotely.
"before i change my miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiind" part.. broke my heart... T_T Desgarradora perfomance del GRAN Ted. Greetings from Peru.
Csodálatos hang! Ennyire tökéletesen, szívbemarkolóan ezt a dalt, csak Ted Neeley tudja előadni! Mégegyszer köszönöm, hogy megosztották! Szép napot kívánok Mindenkinek!
No one can match his original rendition of Gethsemany in film and live performances. He has such a powerful voice and his vibrato even in its highest note is so perfect you would just want to listen to him over and over again. The next JC's after him doesn't even came close to his version. The present musical score of gethsemani was more theatrical rather than rock musical.
I was in high school when Teddy performed at the SB County Bowl and this recording was made. He came to my high school to have a Q&A with my theater class. He was fabulous! I even have pictures!
We need people in who can sing like that in the mainstream... I mean seriously how can something like that amazing voice not be the norm for singers? Or at least an aspect of the norm.
Artists with talent and ability are far harder to control than those without. The record companies have learned how to bypass the talent in making their profits.
Peter Lund I agree 100% with you. I “get it” too! I first saw Superstar 40+ years ago & I was hooked. I’ve listened to the soundtrack & watched the movie countless times over those years. I cry & get goosebumps every single time!
HERE ...HE WAS IN A LIVE PERFORMANCE! can you only imagine what a GOD of singer is he? oh gosh he’s incredible i saw him in live in 2017 still best jesus of all times thanks to be born!!! 🍷
12 Times I went to the cinema There wasn't utube As you said in an interview, Ted, Now you have your role as Jesus. Let's say you had the chance, but it' s been a MARVELLOUS chance Una cosa INDIMENTICABILE PER SEMPRE (Forever and ever) Ciao and good luck
Es realmente una interpretación portentosa . Seguramente insuperable. Camilo Sesto hizo una muy buena versión en español, pero la de TED es la mejor de todas
I saw it in the fall of '76. Yvonne Eliman was in it (another woman had been cast as Mary M., but Elliman became available, perhaps just for a few shows, at the last moment) as well as Carl Anderson. In my program, a young Eric Stoltz is listed as one of the children. (Decades later, director Gary Goddard explained to me that Stoltz sat on Neeley's lap during part of Hosanna.) I still remember the set (it was the only time I ever saw JCS performed outdoors) and various parts like Herod (the performer added some jokes of his own, changing the lines a little for comedic effect). I don't believe there was any implication of resurrection at the end (as in the movie). I recall noticing that and hearing others in the audience making the same observation.
The tempo is faster on this version than most other versions I've heard; and the orchestra doesn't sound great. But Ted delivers this performance like a total professional. Was in great voice back then, too.
He's not the only one who can sing this song exceptionally, nor is he the only good actor in the game who can play jesus.....but no one else makes me *believe* I'm listening to Jesus himself singing his heart out
What can you say about Ted WOW WOW WOW He is the best and back then it was all so pure For the people who like the more ‘modern’ late 1990’s/00’s then Steve Balsamo He is Welsh ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🏴🏴🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🤩🤩👍 👍 👍
Endlessly performing Jesus! He is an astonishing person and singer. This version is too fast and the orchestra is poor. But Ted is ok as usual. I had the chance to meet him at Rome in april . Thank you for sharing.
I got backstage at a performance in Fort Lauderdale (that’s a whole different story) in the 90’s. Like a schoolgirl got autographs of both Ted and Carl. They were super nice. Ted was acting goofy and stayed in character.
I wish you could go in and turn the musical instruments down a couple of notches. As good as this sounds, the music is too loud and his voice is just too wonderful to be over-ridden like that. It is grand though. I closed my eyes and could see him performing it.
Duncan Murray Yeah agreed. I like this one when it's a little more drawn out. Definitely sounded rushed at certain points but I guess it's boring to always play it the exact same. They're prolly just trying something different or maybe rush the harder to sing parts so Ted doesn't kill his vocals lol cuz man he gives it and if they're performing this often (no idea back then) then it could start to cause some serious wear and tear.
No se inglés.... No se como lo dices...... Se lo que dices y lo que me tramites.... Y me duele... Casi como a ti eres verdaderamente el Jesucristo nadie se te puede comparar en tu interpretación no puedo evitar escuchándote 1000 veces que me hagas llorar gracias por transmitir lo que transmites tantos años que ya son miles....
Have to admit the crazy band has kind of grown on me. Something about this version is really cool, if only the fidelity was a bit better. I just keep coming back to this version. I actually kind of like the changing tempo, speeding up as the singing gets more intense. Works for me!

Mark Pestell you bet he has. What a wonderful achievement that would be for anyone. He’s the best, there’s no second.
Indeed true!
I agree whole heartedly
It's impressive how he hits the higher note right in the spot!! Just an amazing singer! Best Jesus of all time!!
No Jesus is better than the real Jesus himself.
@Tara Culpepper - You're absolutely right...except for Ted Neeley.
I'm so glad I got to see Ted and Carl many years ago - front row. I pointed at Carl during the bows and he pointed back. Those two were unreal. There will never be two better than them.
Jesus singing of His humanity to all, through Ted Neely's voice. Thank You, dear Jesus.
This is a Live soundboard recording. NO autotune and maybe no additional effects seem to be used. Still pretty much the definitive interpretation by a once in a generation singer, imho.
When REAL singers sang REAL music...
Best Jesus ever. And btw, Carl Anderson best Judas ever.
They always tried to work together, cause they worked together so well. Or so I have heard.
ted and carl i have had the pleasure of meeting carl just at the 25th ann show before the cancer in the movie white suit i was such a fan girl!! and ted too and now ive seen and met and spoken to Ted many many times hes a good acquaintance,he is a lovely lovely man. and they had a great chemistry live.. .
Have you heard Steve Balsamo's rendition?
+Matt Davies - Yes. It's surprisingly good. But not this good.
For me, this song really needs to be sung by someone who knows how to break their voice, and scream like a rocker. Balsamo and so many other guys try to get away with a falsetto, and no one has time for that...haha.
Unreal performance, was probably born for that role.
Best Jesus Christ Superstar of all time!
I'll be honest with you. Having loved Ted Neeley's portrail of Jesus for years now, I am not interested in seeing any other artist perform the role. Ted is the very essence of the character. No one else comes close. Not even remotely.
I know what you mean.
A M E N...AGREED!
Agreed!
Guy Prince 100% agree over 40 years plus tells it all ! Ted will alawys be number one !
100% he is the only one....
"before i change my miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiind" part.. broke my heart... T_T Desgarradora perfomance del GRAN Ted. Greetings from Peru.

This song continues to carry me through difficult times. Thanks, Ted.
Amazing, he was 33 at that moment. The Christ’s age...
Makes me cry almost every single time i listen to it (at least once a day)
We need people in who can sing like that in the mainstream... I mean seriously how can something like that amazing voice not be the norm for singers? Or at least an aspect of the norm.
Ted Neeley is a highly unusual talent.
Dean Goldenstar Adam Lambert can sing this
Browneyed girl not with the same gravitas I don't believe.
Artists with talent and ability are far harder to control than those without. The record companies have learned how to bypass the talent in making their profits.
Ted's performance showing the human nature of the Divine Son helped me "get" it. You gotta love a guy for doing something like that for you.
Peter Lund I agree 100% with you. I “get it” too! I first saw Superstar 40+ years ago & I was hooked. I’ve listened to the soundtrack & watched the movie countless times over those years. I cry & get goosebumps every single time!
Excellent production! Outdoor amphitheater was FILLED with their immense purity and energy, and interpretive subtleties! Powerful!
Went into this video skeptical, came out a believer; Neeley - the best to ever do it.
I can't... So perfect! Grew up by listening to this guy ❤️ and the ending here is so cute
My tears are flowing like a river cause of Jesus no one can perform miracles like you ever😭💓
Best voice ever - - I love Ted Neeley and " Jesus Christ Superstar" a Masterpiece!! 😘🙏
My friend & I went to see this; it was so phenomenal we went back about 8 times.....he was so inspiring!
HERE ...HE WAS IN A LIVE PERFORMANCE! can you only imagine what a GOD of singer is he?
oh gosh he’s incredible
i saw him in live in 2017 still best jesus of all times
thanks to be born!!! 🍷
Ted Nelly played the best Jesus Christ I think !
So much soul in that voice 👌🏾
The excellent Ted Neeley with another great performance.
A young ted neeley, as goog as the movie sound track.. My favorite gethsemani singer!
NO ONE does this better!!!
In reemplazable único me encanta poder escuchar y verle en este 2022..Genial Gracias.
12 Times I went to the cinema

Acá el gran Camilo Sesto en una magnífica interpretación th-cam.com/video/rkYGQm0y3iM/w-d-xo.html
@Forever Amber la versión de camilo lo hizo frente a público más dramatismo ian gillan en estudio

Adored Yvonne Ellinan.. what a voice. Sadly she died so young..
Found this album on the Superstar Zone forums, gosh I loved it. Dat Anderson.
What a GIFT💕
The tempo is faster on this version than most other versions I've heard; and the orchestra doesn't sound great. But Ted delivers this performance like a total professional. Was in great voice back then, too.
Fabulous, the best ever, such pathos.
He's not the only one who can sing this song exceptionally, nor is he the only good actor in the game who can play jesus.....but no one else makes me *believe* I'm listening to Jesus himself singing his heart out
I love Ted

Legendary, his vocal prowess is unmatched by those who had taken on the role.
Thank you so much for sharing! I'm so grateful for bootlegs.
Endlessly performing Jesus! He is an astonishing person and singer. This version is too fast and the orchestra is poor. But Ted is ok as usual. I had the chance to meet him at Rome in april . Thank you for sharing.
Jesus....he’s good!
I see what you did there
Ted is my favorite JC Superstar.
Сколько боли, трагизма, человечности и божественности! Гениально!
Thank you so much
desgarrador. una interpretación desgarradora y perfecta.
wonderful , the best
Ted Neeley rules
Ted was actually the stand in.
Yep... and probably never heard of if Ian Gillan, the first and original, said yes to the role in the movie.... if only...
Siempre serás un maestro Ted Neeley.
Reallyyyyy goodesttttt at allll .. ❤️
✝️❤️✝️❤️✝️
💕🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💕

The best ever!
Ted can sing.
I saw this performance. Santa Barbara Bowl
Thanks for sharing this!
beautiful
I got backstage at a performance in Fort Lauderdale (that’s a whole different story) in the 90’s. Like a schoolgirl got autographs of both Ted and Carl. They were super nice. Ted was acting goofy and stayed in character.
Watch the video of him singing this at 80 years old, it will blow you away
HOLY CRAP THIS IS BETTER THAN THE OST VERSION IN TERMS OF PERFORMANCE.
He's amazing... the second best I ever heard after Ian Gillan
What I like in this version is how effortlessly he hit those notes that I assume he can hit much higher notes than G5. Sheeesh!
Супер!!!!! Спасибо!!!!!
Отлично! Иначе и быть не может!
Golden one
Holy shit!
Fantastic🙏👍👍
I wish you could go in and turn the musical instruments down a couple of notches. As good as this sounds, the music is too loud and his voice is just too wonderful to be over-ridden like that. It is grand though. I closed my eyes and could see him performing it.
i wholeheartedly agree
LEGEND
Teds voice has gotten lower but i luv to hear his earlier songs....hi notes...wow
Amazing voice as always... but the band didn't do him any favours!! Way too quick on the tempo 😳
Duncan Murray

HOLY FUCKING HELL, neeley > jesus
No se inglés.... No se como lo dices...... Se lo que dices y lo que me tramites.... Y me duele... Pues ahora le puedes ver en directo, en madrid.
Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii'll dieeeeeeee..... amazing!
only thing that bothers me on this is that unsynchronized musical accompanying
it's not the track, Neeley is notorious for being late on line
I think it adds an air of desperation to Jesus's singing
Whenever the drums kick in, it suddenly gets faster. I think the drummer did cocaine before this performance!
It's Teddy. It's called "back phrasing". It's an artistic choice.
4:29 to the end seems like the musicians got into it more :)
MERAVIGLIA!
wowow, he just had that in his pocket? sheesh
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
super
Wow!!!
와 76년도.. 엄청나다
Still watching even my generation is Z .
Ted was in a class by himself.
Give me Trevor White any old day!!!
No one better👍
Could someone make a clip of this and isolate the vocals? That would be amazing
Wowwww
Why should I die...
Then I was inspired..
Why then am I scared to finisch..
27 januari in groningen! Top.
OMG
That is a lonely voice crying in the wilderness. Where did your god go Ted ?
Q maravilla
Ted kills it, as always, but what the hell is up with the band? Time is all over the place.......
Have to admit the crazy band has kind of grown on me. Something about this version is really cool, if only the fidelity was a bit better.
I just keep coming back to this version. I actually kind of like the changing tempo, speeding up as the singing gets more intense. Works for me!
The movie is the best version. Not biblical but moving.
It's Ted Neeley or nothing!
