From the US here. I talked to someone from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) last week who basically said the best by dates are arbitrary and that they are safe for years as long as the can integrity is good. I have been eating food past those dates for years and haven't died yet. We have bargain stores that buy out the foods near or past the dates to sell at reduced prices. I love those stores!
I second this. Food is essentially always fine unless you can clearly see something wrong with it. The best before dates are generally made up assumptions so they can't get sued

We've just lost our Pound Stretcher and I can't say it's a big loss, it's quite a weird shop. Best thing about it was it had a brand of cat food sometimes that you don't normally see in stores. Good video! I really enjoy seeing all of the challenges you do
My mate used to eat a certain cat food from a bargain shop he couldn't find it anywhere else, he was lost when it stopped assuming its same one you eat.
You could forage for some stinging nettle leaves or seeds to cook to go with your pasta & rice. Leaves are best near the beginning of the season & are extremely nutritious & more tasty than spinach. The seeds are also a good source of nutrients later. Also other plants such as plantain, dandelion & chickweed are worth looking at & there may also be fruits like blackberries to be found.
C'mon, Sam. BEST BEFORE dates are not a warning that the food has expired and will kill you. They are put on everything, including soap and plastic bags where I live (no longer in the UK)! Best before is a guideline. We didn't have them 40 years ago and cases of botulism or salmonella from such foods was a rare event. The thing you DO need to watch is the USE BY date. This is more often on fresh foods - meat, dairy, perishable items. They are important as the longer such foods sit, the more its condition alters with the growth of bacterium, etc. I look for items that are on sale because they've reached or are just past their best before date - because otherwise they will end up in a landfill - and using them within a month of purchase means they haven't lost any nutritional value. Honey has a best before date - it NEVER goes bad. Salt has a best before date - and unless it gets damp, it doesn't go bad or breed bacterium! I know someone who ate food from cans (no rust, no dents, no deterioration in the packing integrity, stored in a cool, dry cellar for almost 50 years) that had been bought and stored for an emergency - and they are still happy, healthy and intact! It saved them a considerable amount of money, too - only needing fresh and perishable foods for many weeks. The very fact that the shop alerts you to that information shows that they ARE checking dates and being responsible!
I volunteer at a Community Grocery Store and we have some stuff that's past it's sell by date. There's nothing wrong with it you just need to know how long after the sell by date it's good for, which some tinned stuff can be good for years.
This episode makes me wish i had one of these in my local shops as my local poundland shut down and it was a major blow to my shopping. But those chickpeas were a goldmine. Also none of that in the store was expired its totally edible and still good.
Saturday mornings at Salisbury swimming baths in the early 80’s was kids only and the pool was full of mats and inflatables. A 10p cup of hot bovril from the vending machine was so comforting walking to get the bus home
Love watching these videos so entertaining I used to know what it was like to only live on a small budget for food each week and having to be creative in what I was making to make food last me a week £15 food shop and a big use for creativity got me by
There's a very big difference between best before dates and use by dates .......besf before is perfectly fine to eat after the date especially with Tinned stuff ...it's fine for years
Another enjoyable video Sam! 😀 I'm sure in addition to your basic salt, pepper and oil, you should be able to include sugar & milk? I think most people would have this on hand even if just adding to tea/coffee? I love those pancake shake bottles!
There was a Poundstrecher where I live but it closed down cause half... wait no 90% of the stuff they had was either months out of date or looked like someone threw it into a skip from the eiffle tower due to how damaged it was, the only thing that I bought from them was some ball point pens as it was the only thing not broken, it's now my town's second B&M store
The canning proccess gives most things an extraordinary shelf life, Ive eaten a year over date can of mixed beans and no problem at all. Sadly not the best place to shop for a challenge.
Pound stretcher sell lots of food after best before it's why it is cheep , I think they have put signs up so people are aware before they choose to buy. They would not sell something after used by which is different we have one in town I live in and to be honest it's kinda the shop you only go in if you really need too
I would love to see a clip of when you tried to take the cake tin out realising that’s what the foldable handles on the trivet are for. Probably just 2 minutes of bleeps anyway 😂😂
Can anyone work out how much the planet proteins are please, they are great with tuna. Ive never been in poundland, thou daughter says nothing is a pound .
Hi Sam, So many of us have condiments and sauces from fast food places, packets of mustard ketchup, sometimes savory sauces, sometimes jams and sweet things, packets of honey and sugar, from takeout. Rather than considering them extra they are basically free and just gathering dust in our fridges pantries and drawers... I'm glad you got the chickpeas, other commenters have given more of the governmental recommendations. I would just like to add my 2 cents (pennies) of my 60 years of cooking and not fussing too much about best by dates NOR expiration dates...Speaking of which you lucky Brits have Rogers Discount Stores which sell thing past their best buy dates DIRT CHEAP. Give 'em a go. Before I watch the fusili and sauce...I would use pasta water instead of plain to get the most flavor. Let's see what our Hero Sam does.
I've tried those lentils and enjoyed them with curry. Would you think they would be okay with eggs, in an omelette for example. Be like curried eggs maybe. Sound okay to you? Love your informative videos Sam, just normal family food. Thanks.😁
Another fab video! Also i think you maybe mixed up use by date with best before. Best before is when the food will be safe to eat but may not be at its best and should be fine. Whereas, use by date you should never eat :) might help you for next challenge and i look forward to whats next 😊
@@SamWilder. haha well i live comfortable here in bangkok for under 1000£ a month incl all and dont miss anything, eating out most days and living in a nice calm thai middleclass street. Just keep away from expensive ladys and alcohol and its a good cheap life.
Allow me to educate you... J. Sainsbury's came up with a radical new concept in 1974. It was not a concept to Protect their customers from death. It was a concept to increase sales, and subsequently waste. It was so successful every other retail chain (to the utter distain of bin men, and subsequently Greta thunberg) adopted the concept. As you're clearly sold on the concept, im guessing you're a millennial or not that much older!! Oh, i forgot to tell you J. Sainsbury's 1974 concept... J. Sainsbury's INVENTED the Best before date!!!
It’s not out of date, as mentioned, these are Best Before Dates not Use By Dates. Absolutely nothing wrong with them. Mostly designed to make you throw stuff away and buy new!
My local Poundstretcher has trippled their prices and they wonder why there's no-one shopping there now. I know a lot of companies have upped their prices but 3x? Something that used to cost under £1 now is cloer to 4. When you can go to Home Bargains for less, why bother going there?
Isn’t it crazy how they were selling expired food? Geeeez. Why not do challenge where for the first week of the month you spend fifty pounds, then ten pounds a week for the next three weeks just to see if you can build a decent pantry of different things to get you through the month.
@@SamWilder. 🤣 sure you could! Just pick up where you left off. And at least you won’t have to wrack your brain trying to think up something new lol. You got this! I have faith in you sir!!
Its amazing how you can make meals on a tight budget, just need imagination and a few cupboard ingredients. I dont understand why you couldn't use milk if already in your fridge? Well done, you managed it
90% of comments: "There is a big difference between Best Before and Use By dates". Me: "Sam was talking about protein and just skipped over the pet food isle. I'm sure there would have been some tinned meat there." (I'm joking, please do not eat the pet food!)
If ur doing food challengers then at least have the knowledge between best before and sell by dates! Foods past their sell by dates are fine to eat. That's why there are lots of cheap food online sites now! Jezzzz 🙄

Perfectly legal to sell dry and tinned goods past the date on the packaging as they are best before dates not use by dates, in fact some tinned goods no longer come with dates on them as they are shelf stable for years, the big caveat being, you can only trust undamaged items.
Pound Stretcher?? Didn't the company go bust years ago? Someone has bought the trade name and judging from what I see not a UK citizen. Shocking, what a crime.
Poundstretcher is such a weird place - simultaneously scabby yet overpriced. Almost every item is cheaper in in supermarkets, pound shops and places like B&M and Home Bargains. God knows how they are still going

@@SamWilder. no but again it was a best before date. They’re still perfectly fine to eat after that best before date but probably a bit more stale.
Love these. Thanks for sharing.
The microwave stuff is also boil in the bag.
The canning proccess gives most things an extraordinary shelf life, Ive eaten a year over date can of mixed beans and no problem at all.
Sadly not the best place to shop for a challenge.
It's only a Best before date on the chickpeas, they would be fine for a while yet
❤❤so can you do €10 Tesco value range
I'm not sure if you live near a Heron Foods but you should do the challenge there!
When we make pasta bake we put smoked sausage or hotdogs in
Pound stretcher sell lots of food after best before it's why it is cheep , I think they have put signs up so people are aware before they choose to buy. They would not sell something after used by which is different we have one in town I live in and to be honest it's kinda the shop you only go in if you really need too
Maybe a microwave company needs to sponsor you and give you a machine and have you make a microwave series.
That would be interesting, I only heat in my microwave
When I make pancakes I always add sugar in the pancake mix before frying.
I would love to see a clip of when you tried to take the cake tin out realising that’s what the foldable handles on the trivet are for. Probably just 2 minutes of bleeps anyway 😂😂
Sweet new vid mate
Thanks bud!
Can anyone work out how much the planet proteins are please, they are great with tuna. Ive never been in poundland, thou daughter says nothing is a pound .
Approved Food are you choice for items close to or after their BB dates and enjoy the deliciousness
Once you've done every shop at least once, you should do a tier list of the best shops for shopping on a budget :)
I've eaten tinned food that is 2 years out of date and it's been fine. I get nervous with jars though!
Fine as long as the button hasn't popped and use your nose, smell test!
I like the Rice and beans it's looks a nice thing to try
If the rules allow use of pantry: my grandma used to serve us rolled up pancakes with cinnamon/ sugar on the inside😍
I wish they did but love that idea. Anything cinnamon is the best!
Thanks.😁
Love theses videos❤
Another fab video! Also i think you maybe mixed up use by date with best before. Best before is when the food will be safe to eat but may not be at its best and should be fine. Whereas, use by date you should never eat :) might help you for next challenge and i look forward to whats next 😊
Possibly, but there was only one date on them so didn’t want to risk it! Still stands to reason they shouldn’t sell things past the best before date!
@@SamWilder. yea 100% agree! I am super surprised they do this :)
@@SamWilder.that’s why they’re cheap though
@@SamWilder.Perfectly legal to sell things past their best before date.
@@parlay-music that’s fair, I didn’t know!
Getting close to 9k subs now Sam! Hopefully be getting up to 10k sharpish!
Fingers crossed! 🤞🏼
If Best Before tinned food is out of date it will be safe to eat as long as the tin is not compromised in any way.
Can goods, can last well past the best buy date. Years actually as long as the can is not dented.
Here in Bangkok / Thailand i can easily eat good fresh 3 meals OUT a day for 2 days for 10£ incl fresh fruit smoothie and icecoffees =)
Clearly I need to move countries xD
@@SamWilder. haha well i live comfortable here in bangkok for under 1000£ a month incl all and dont miss anything, eating out most days and living in a nice calm thai middleclass street.
Just keep away from expensive ladys and alcohol and its a good cheap life.
Remind us the local wages there...
@@keithparker1346well i promise u that the MIDDLECLASS in bangkok have more money to spend than middleclass in the west
@@gmm5550 quantify that
You do know foods still good after the best before date. There are places that just sell out of date things
Is there such a thing as 'sell by date'? Thought it was use by and best before?
You can get fresh food in Poundland.
13:38 same
A great video, I think the most challenging yet.
Best before food is fine to eat past the date on the item.
Shops are alowd to sell past best before but not use by.
Wow, a tin of chickpeas one month past their BBE, however could you eat such a thing, you might just die on the spot
It seems in pound stretcher. Nothing ever moves off the shelf’s and all looks old
It’s not out of date, as mentioned, these are Best Before Dates not Use By Dates. Absolutely nothing wrong with them. Mostly designed to make you throw stuff away and buy new!
Why does buby not get any?
Try this again, they have bought down prices so much recently
FYI it takes far, FAR more than a week to get Scurvy.
Haha I know mate, of course it does! 😂
My local Poundstretcher has trippled their prices and they wonder why there's no-one shopping there now. I know a lot of companies have upped their prices but 3x? Something that used to cost under £1 now is cloer to 4.
When you can go to Home Bargains for less, why bother going there?
🙌🙌
Isn’t it crazy how they were selling expired food? Geeeez. Why not do challenge where for the first week of the month you spend fifty pounds, then ten pounds a week for the next three weeks just to see if you can build a decent pantry of different things to get you through the month.
Fun idea! But I don’t know if I’d do a challenge lasting longer than a week :p
@@SamWilder. 🤣 sure you could! Just pick up where you left off. And at least you won’t have to wrack your brain trying to think up something new lol. You got this! I have faith in you sir!!
Context is cool but I’m wondering how consuming so often process food is going to effect your health soon..
You need to to a tk max food one
The tinned chickpeas would have been ok as its only a best before date!
Hi how are you doing
Its amazing how you can make meals on a tight budget, just need imagination and a few cupboard ingredients. I dont understand why you couldn't use milk if already in your fridge?
Well done, you managed it
People have been complaining about him using items not bought on the day , that’s probably why
@@tarachristie933 ^^ people love to complain 😂
90% of comments: "There is a big difference between Best Before and Use By dates".
Me: "Sam was talking about protein and just skipped over the pet food isle. I'm sure there would have been some tinned meat there."
(I'm joking, please do not eat the pet food!)
Tried a dog biscuit once. Aftertaste was grim.
How long can you live? Do you mean before the food runs out, or before it kills you?
4:33 those who know know come on sam ❤
Its silly to deny yourself a few condiments and staples
Sugar and lemon juice would probably have ‘flipped’ those pancakes! 😅
are you related to Black Belt Barrister?
If ur doing food challengers then at least have the knowledge between best before and sell by dates! Foods past their sell by dates are fine to eat. That's why there are lots of cheap food online sites now! Jezzzz 🙄
Have you tried to live on magic bags for 2 days
Came across this channel today.. and i refuse to believe sam and mike jeavons aint related, even down to the mannerisms 😂
i made the likes counter change from 222 to 223 🤭im so naughty
Those chickpeas will be fine still in 5yrs
Heron foods?

Romans 6.23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Sam Can you please do "How long can I live on £10 at the co-op" video
It’s on the list!
Can they give you a microwave
I wish they could but they don’t do them!!! :(
Sam use words good!
The dates on the cans will have been best before dates so you would probably have been fine 😊.
Still don’t think they should have been selling though!
@@SamWilder.Perhaps because its a discount shop and the food is still good to eat. That's probably why they said to check the date?
Perfectly legal to sell dry and tinned goods past the date on the packaging as they are best before dates not use by dates, in fact some tinned goods no longer come with dates on them as they are shelf stable for years, the big caveat being, you can only trust undamaged items.
This is the equivalent of making a video saying i am going to see how many days i can live off of food from Shoe Zone
😂😂
Another interesting entertaining video 🤩Thank you. Confession:😇 guilty of being greedy to have more videos released more often😈
Wish I could!
I think poundstrends now is expensive 😢
Pound Stretcher?? Didn't the company go bust years ago? Someone has bought the trade name and judging from what I see not a UK citizen. Shocking, what a crime.
Poundstretcher is such a weird place - simultaneously scabby yet overpriced. Almost every item is cheaper in in supermarkets, pound shops and places like B&M and Home Bargains. God knows how they are still going
Scammy employer imo. Advertising locally in their shop but no real details of hours, wages etc yet enough room to say their wages are "competitive"
as someone who work for this company i can confirm they are a pile of well ya know
the sale by date isn't uncommon in this dam shop
Close down poundstretchers
Whinging
Why would you go to Poundstretcher for a food shop ?? It is NOT a store known for selling food .............
It’s not like poundland. Will agree it’s like B&M and HomeBargains
