Growing up in Brazil i haven't suffered much discrimination, rather, it was weird people were always like "You asian, you must excel at math and stuff, do my homework". And damn i suck at studying. But now in times of COVID, things became really odd. Been hearing things like "You should go back to your country and take your *ducking* disease with you" everywhere, I'm quite a thick skinned guy so i dont really mind and i just ignore the ignorants, but, a friend told me the case of his 91 years old grandma who went home with her tiny eyes all teared up, saying that they bullied her out of the bus, she was going to her gerontologist and wasn't able to go that day. People really are crossing the line of sanity, blaming people and their ethnicities instead of the virus itself. So much wasted energy that could be productive somewhere else in these times of pandemics.

Considering America's long history of discrimination, its truly sad that the moment we are hit with a problem the response is to revert back to this toxic pattern.
This is not surprising when you consider that the parents of America are Theft and Slavery. Racism is embedded in US culture and the US Constitution despite the latter's lofty assertion that "all men are equal..." The country is f*&$ed and I say that as one who lived there for 20 years.
@@uwanttono4012 Okay, please stop with the fear-mongering. i guess this is something that every foreigner experiences when not in their own country, like for instance americans born in japan and can only speak japanese fluently but not english but still don't feel like they're japanese or part of japan or in this case korean people born in america yet have been made to feel that they cannot be "american". usually people just suck it up as a natural occurrence bc of how society works but the combination of the feeling of isolation, being subjected to stereotypes that exclusively come from western commentary on "eastern culture", not having a voice socially, prominent politicians being vocal in their position against your "race"(or in this case looking 'similar' to chinese people according to them), AND the added factor of being physically unsafe makes it a doubly tempting option to move away from your supposed home in US's case. in my case my family had american citizenship, and they moved out because they felt like there's no future in being "asian" in america amongst other things(ofc its not the only reason) especially after the pandemic(put quotation marks because only the US and certain western european countries lumps together the entire continent of very different nations into one word). my dad has experienced incidents related to racism in the past since he's both "asian" and a muslim, an unholy combination that essentially paints two targets on his back in the US lol, but it's just gonna get worse from here on. quite unfortunate, really. i personally didn't live in the US for long but i was always worried about my dad whenever i heard about his experiences, it's quite relieving to me that he's finally out of there

Being a 4'11 southeast asian living in US, experienced a lot of this micro racism most of the time from all colors and race here in US. The thing I noticed is they usually back out when you show agression back when they talk down to you. I'm most of the time a typical smiling friendly little asian, but as soon as someone talks derogatory remarks. I just say something back to them that put them on their toes. I think a lot of this is happening because we rarely resort to violence when being attacked. I always say. I wait for the first move then my wrath will come out. I am tired of being treated like a little asian woman who works hard just to get walk on.
It depends on the situation..it's not about just resorting to violence, it's to have the right to defend yourself. It seems to me that this channel meets and talks to people from all walks of life who tend to be more educated and interested in foreign cultures. Hence ipso facto they tend to be more empathetic of others not of their race.
I'm honestly done with trying to reason with people using words. A lot of people in this world(especially the close-minded ones) are irrational and won't listen no matter how much you try to talk it out with them. These stories are so depressing, even more so when I have to hear politicians argue and give up on any change. In the US I was always nervous every time my Asian American partner went out on his own and I just couldn't live like that any more. Many people thought I was American as I'm caucasian, even though I was an immigrant there, and they thought my partner was an immigrant but he was a US citizen and a US Air Force veteran. We moved to Canada. There is still racism here, and have experienced it head-on, but not at the level as it is in the US.
True. But then we need to mention an outcast: the Vietnamese Americans (and possibly Vietnamese diaspora loyal to South Vietnam in majority). Many Vietnamese are supporters of Trump and ingrained Hitlerist ideology on their democratic movement. And they participated, resoundingly, on the failed 6 January coup at the Capitol Hill alongside KKK, Confederates and Nazis. You may wonder what are they worth for when seeing bedfellows Asians suffering attacks, including themselves.

Asian American here, its nice that we're considered "model citizens" because we work hard. But, it's disheartening to also know it's because we keep our heads down. I feel like leaving sometimes, yet it's more patriotic to stay and give this young nation an opportunity to grow.

Personally.. the school can have discussions on why hate crimes and violence happens. Most of times its easier to target certain groups of people.. but the person doing those actions are doing it cause they themselves are having troubles or wanting to be in trouble or thinks they can get away with it etc. But yes, address the issue and discuss them in public school environment is initial step towards educating ignorance and bullies.

It can be done within my subject area (music) fairly easily. I sometimes choose songs with social justice messages or more diverse cultural representation.

As Johnny Depp once said,: "if somebody is invading my personal space. I will with all my might and protect this space. So when I got harassed by a child, I punched him with a rock. - End of story and the end of harassment. "
My Aunt who is an Filipino-American is planning to comeback here in the Philippines because living there makes her feel suffocated and scared. She hasn't been out of her home for a month her husband is with her so she's safe but the family of her husband drop down racist comments so she feels sad. I just wish she would return here earlier with her husband. America doesn't deserve the Asians.
South is good for all minority people compare to racist north. Asian must fight back and control all place in the north to stop this menace from Asianphobers in demokkkrats run cities...run for office and involved in everything to stop this in America. It's time we step up and stop this garbage
I am from Orange County, Southern California. My family hasn’t yet experienced this kind of racism. However, it’s always in the back of my mind and be more mindful of my surrounding whenever I am out and about. I just ordered pepper sprays and stun guns for a peace of mind. Update: I picked the ones with one of the most reviews on Amazon. Sabre Red pepper spray keychains & Vipertek VTS 979 stun guns. I bought them for myself, and my parents.
Make sure it's the right kind of pepper spray. There's one that will affect everyone in the area and not just the person it's pointed at (my daughter experienced it at work, they had to evacuate the building. She was feeling the effects for hours after and she was nowhere near the spray)
My ex-roommate in college, who was an international student from Japan at the time, was attacked and mugged last year in Seattle. The people who attacked her called her racial slurs and asked her if she had COVID just because she is Asian. Two women came and helped her but the guys who attacked her took off with her wallet and AirPods. Police came and they took her to the university hospital and luckily she wasn't hurt badly. Just a few scrapes and bruises but was definitely traumatized after. I was waiting for a few days to see if the media would mention anything about the attack and warn the public about these people or to know whether or not they have been arrested, but there was nothing. I feel like at the very least, the university should have sent out an email or some sort of notification/announcement about the attackers to warn us and to make sure that everyone is safe, especially to the Asian community at the university since it was clearly a hate crime that happened literally across the street from campus.
I keep watching what’s going on in the background. Not one person without a mask. What a great feeling of people actually following the rules. Warms my heart.
People around me have been mistreating for being a Filipino-American and even to the extent of one of my own best friends joining in on it- It's also been hard to even call the U.S my home since so many people are telling me that "I do not belong here" I really want to say Philippines is my home too but it's also hard because I'm so foreign. I do not know Tagalog nor am I used to the culture and lifestyle there. And to this day I still have to ask myself. "Where do I belong?" "Where is a place that I can call home?". Where...
You can always learn the culture or the language..having accepting and positive people around you is very important for your growth...stay where your heart yearns

Just curious how do you find people on the street that are Korean-American to interview? Curious as to the process of finding people to interview and how long y'all have to wait 😅
I think the interview was done on the busiest street of Gangnam, where you can find probably a lot of English speaking Koreans cuz big companies like to hire them and they are mostly situated in Gangnam area. Either that or they are there to teach English? That district is also full of private English schools (we call it hakwon)
Everyone in Asia who thinks they should move to the US or West so their kids can have a "better life" should watch this. They usually are completely clueless about all the racism Asian kids face growing up in the West.

Jeez. Asians outside the US feel your pain and fear. We’re outraged at how things are being handled. Hearing about the attacks, it really hits hard being Asian, irrespective of whether you’re in the States or outside. Be safe to all the Asians in the US. You’re in our prayers.
As a Pacific Islander who grew up in Hawaii, I have nothing but love and respect for Asian communities. Even attraction to Asians. It saddens me that such terrible things are happening.
Are black ppl saying that their lives are matter but Asian lives are not matter? The black community should reflect and actively try to solve this issue.
Don't it go both ways? People can help one another but should not be forced. I mean if I click on a asian racism video I don't really want to hear about black struggles at the moment really just like how I dont want to hear about asian struggles on a video about racism toward black people. Stay on topic.
Most violent hate crimes are committed by B ppl. If you don't admit it, we can't talk. That's why I'm asking the black community for an active voice. Actually I’m so angry about it
As an Asian American I can sadly say that I've experienced a significant amount of racism even before the pandemic. In high school, even though 40% of the students were Asian American in there, there were groups of students running around accusing people of being "dirty Asiana" that are pests, spread disease and basically steal jobs, money, and everything that they thought they were owed. I've been discriminated in finding internships and jobs - one email stating my rejection to an internship said that they "hired too many Asians" and that they rejected me because of my ethnicity. It's always lurked in the shadows as microaggressions (examples are at 8:13) and it's just been getting done in more open actions in public. I was walking in an airport to fly back to university in January and I had a person walking around berating anyone that looked Asian and asking "if they carried COVID like rats carry disease". No one did anything - I tried to reach out to police officers in the airport but they just talked to him for a second and he went back to berating people WHILE THEY WATCHED. It's like we are treated lesser than white people but just slightly tolerated and paid more than other minorities, and just used as a scapegoat for everything and anything in this pandemic. Just a convenient person to assign work to do to claim credit when things go right and an even easier person to blame when things go wrong - after all, it's not the first time the US blamed Asian Americans and Asians for something. The most recent time was a short 20-30 years ago, with events like the LA riots.
Regarding the internship, you realize it's the federal government that passes laws about which ethnicity of people must be hired. Maybe they really did hired too many asians, and now by law they had to look for one trans, one woman, one in a wheelchair, one black.... I like Hillsdale College's approach. They don't ask incoming student's their race, because race isn't a factor, that's not how you're judged.
@@ludwigvonmiseswasright4380 That's a good approach. But unfortunately you can sort of tell from the students' name, at least for Asians. At least, officially they can say they don't practice racial discrimination as a matter of policy
True, discrimination is everywhere. Not just discrimination but also racial abuse and insults. However as far as I know there have been no racial violence against other races in Korea or Japan or China. TBH, I can' say the same for other Asian countries.
I am Japanese and live in America. I am recently confused about anti-Asian hate. I am not Japanese American so I am not so offended if some people said I have to go back to China or Asia. But do I encourage Asian hate if I don’t act against it? Because anti- Asians don’t know if I am American or Japanese..

Asian boss is the only TH-cam channel that I don't skip adds on. Most Korean who have never live abroad are racist toward foreigners especialy Southeast Asian people while Korean who live abroad experiencing racism, in this case by American. A friend of mine who lives in Korea told me that living as a foreigner in Korea means that you have to go through all unfair policies and your voices won't be heard whatever you do, and the same goes to Korean who live in America. What a sad pattern in this modern age where more people get educated about racism but ignorant enough to accept the value of humanity.
Low-income Koreans have been suffering cause illegal immigrants from China and Southeast Asia since 2000. However, Koreans do not beat foreigners. Rather, foreigners beat Koreans.
From now on, every time I hear that question, I will ask them the exact same question, emphasis on "really" from. No white person ever expects to be asked that.
Yet the same people saying "Protect. Asian. Lives." push for policies that actively prevent them from defending themselves because they want to take all the guns away.
this is heartbreaking but just a little reminder, korean (native south korean), also did discriminations against other races expecially from what me and my relative experience as a south east asian people so please, stop the racism racism is a plague of humanity that we need to solve and stop
I live in San jose California and I never felt racism toward me. But I always loud and speak my mind and never back down. That why I have bat in my car and a pepper spray on with me. I warn my mom about be more careful and watch her surroundings.
The fact you have to carry a bat and pepper spray seems to conflict with you never feeling racism before. If you never felt racism, you wouldn't need such things.
Yea by looking at the current situation in the US, having a bat or a pepper spray is necessary, it is getting worse with more attacks on asians reported...
Racism is not just restricted to USA. You can feel discriminated even more in asian countries where your skin colour, beauty and the country where you come from will be much more important than anything else. It's just that people need to look inwards. Asian people can speak about being harassed themselves in some western country but do they treat non white foreigners right in their own countries?
@@alimohammad1934 Not killing is all good. But my point is that you don't want to treat someone the way you don't want to be treated yourself. Casual and subtle discrimination is much more common in Asia because most people don't have this idea of race here unlike USA
I am a public school teacher here in the US. My heart is breaking for all the Asian Americans here who are afraid and suffering. I am trying my best to educate my students thoroughly on this issue so they can spread kindness instead of hate. I hope to go to graduate school in Korea to have a more well-rounded education that is less Eurocentric so I can become a better ally. 미안합니다. :(
How is the US “Eurocentric”? We’re a multicultural country. You fortunately don’t have to graduate in Korea to learn of its history and culture. You can simply use the internet to gather any information you’re looking for. Mass hysteria in the US against the Chinese is only normal, since we’re at extremely high tensions with China, think of the Cold War with Russia. It’ll only get worse when China invades Taiwan and more Chinese spies infiltrate our country.
@@aus-li I believe the original comment was referring to the education in the US being eurocentric, not US as a whole, which is pretty much true, unfortunately. We learn very little about other cultures and a lot of details concerning the role of other races other than Europeans in US history are left out (btw, I'm a high schooler so I can testify to this stuff :/)
@@melloqu6542 That's true about school being mostly about European history, but in college it's obviously more diverse. But, not that diverse, since after I graduated college, I started to do personal research and basically my college education became completely redundant. Although it's not hard to figure out what's really going on if you've done all the research. As you said, most people would most likely stay ignorant unless you're passionate about all these subjects/topics.
These young men don't understand that no one cares about your feelings. People are allowed to be racist, exploit you, be rude to you. The best response is stand strong, chin up, and stay focused on what youre doing. Sometimes if you're in a group and you don't belong, you need to take your place, that's the harsh reality. Trying to tell people why "it's not okay to speak to me like this" is something mommy says when you're 5.. time to grow up and realize you were never entitled to anything in life. If you don't like something control the way you move.
Wow there are so many comments about racism within Korea and I can’t put it to words but it’s really, really sad to see. I apologize on behalf of the racist people commenters have encountered. It’s 2021 and reality really has hit me so hard. It’s also sad how the video itself is about Asian hate in America, but the comments are focused on racism in Korea..?? It’s not only Koreans that are dealing with anti-asian racism in the US, so I don’t understand why the comments are like “good for you Koreans, now you see what racism is like”. To these kind of commenters, what makes you different from the racists then? Why are you levelling yourself down to the racists’ level?
It's getting tedious reasoning with people who think Asian Americans and "Mainland" Asians are the exact same. I've dealt with a handful of them on Twitter. Of course there can be correlations with immigrants and first generation Asian Americans, but their beliefs, societal issues, or customs are typically very different. It's not fair to compare either of them to each other. They're both dealing with their own stuff and have unique issues in their community to improve upon. You may absolutely provide criticism, but never umbrella everyone into a single conception or stereotype.
Agreed. How can people preach anti racism and talk about other country being racist and then be hypocritical? People talk about Korea not being open to foreigner but in America has history of being racist to Asians and not take anti Asian attacks seriously.
They're really not. They talked way more about black people problems for a very long time but when it comes to other minorities they get brushed under the rug. Im Hispanic and can confirm it. We need to make our voices heard and the media will listen

Fellow Asians, please use this time to reflect on how WE have taken part in racism/colorism within our own Asian community, in our home countries, in our diaspora. Of course, we've all been taught to keep our heads down and focus on our own work and goals...plus, it's not like Asian parents are big on open communication, airing out family problems, talking about the past, etc. So we have the luxury of trying to avoid thinking about racism when it's not directed at us, or the racial profiling benefits us. Now that we're feeling the heat again, it should wake us up to the fact that it's always there, the Black community faces it exponentially worse than we do, and we've been part of the problem. I'm ashamed at how ignorant I've been more most of my life and unwilling to take up the fight alongside Black people in the fight against racism. That's gotta change. So remember to check your Asian privilege when talking about feeling unsafe...and be brave enough to have uncomfortable talks, apologize, and take action.

i guess this is something that every foreigner experiences when not in their own country, like for instance americans born in japan and can only speak japanese fluently but not english but still don't feel like they're japanese or part of japan or in this case korean people born in america yet have been made to feel that they cannot be "american". usually people just suck it up as a natural occurrence bc of how society works but the combination of the feeling of isolation, being subjected to stereotypes that exclusively come from western commentary on "eastern culture", not having a voice socially, prominent politicians being vocal in their position against your "race"(or in this case looking 'similar' to chinese people according to them), AND the added factor of being physically unsafe makes it a doubly tempting option to move away from your supposed home in US's case. in my case my family had american citizenship, and they moved out because they felt like there's no future in being "asian" in america amongst other things(ofc its not the only reason) especially after the pandemic(put quotation marks because only the US and certain western european countries lumps together the entire continent of very different nations into one word). my dad has experienced incidents related to racism in the past since he's both "asian" and a muslim, an unholy combination that essentially paints two targets on his back in the US lol, but it's just gonna get worse from here on. quite unfortunate, really. i personally didn't live in the US for long but i was always worried about my dad whenever i heard about his experiences, it's quite relieving to me that he's finally out of there

As a french half chinese, know that every asian community around the world supports you, including mine. This wednesday, five ppl went on trial over anti-asian tweets in Paris. Back in october 2020, they said to attack any asian in the streets, one even said to attack those learning mandarin. One young man got attacked the day after those tweets in Paris. But even before covid, french asians were targeted because they are easy to steal from and supposedly carrying a lot money. Unfortunately this is what happened to Zhang Chaolin back in 2016, who got attacked and killed for just a phone charger, some sweets and cigarettes. And many french asians confessed about being verbally/physically attacked or know someone who did. It's not only happening in the US, it's happening everywhere sadly.
The same in Germany

Being a 4'11 southeast asian living in US, experienced a lot of this micro racism most of the time from all colors and race here in US. The thing I noticed is they usually back out when you show agression back when they talk down to you. I'm most of the time a typical smiling friendly little asian, but as soon as someone talks derogatory remarks. I just say something back to them that put them on their toes.
I think a lot of this is happening because we rarely resort to violence when being attacked. I always say. I wait for the first move then my wrath will come out. I am tired of being treated like a little asian woman who works hard just to get walk on.
Resorting to violence would only get your worse results from people who want every excuse to hurt yall.
It depends on the situation..it's not about just resorting to violence, it's to have the right to defend yourself. Remember I said, I don't instigate the fight, I will resort to violence if someone has attack me first.
Hitting them where it hurts instead is the most effective way of getting the message across that their behavior will NOT be tolerated and there will be consequences. People don't truly understand what it feels like until they've been on the receiving end.

Robbery = Hate crime ???

As an Asian-American, thank you for covering this!
I hope you took a video of that idiot in the airport and especially of the cops that did nothing. Some people are just so mentally ill.

A friend of mine who lives in Korea told me that living as a foreigner in Korea means that you have to go through all unfair policies and your voices won't be heard whatever you do, and the same goes to Korean who live in America.

But they don't kill. Blacks in south Africa have a party that says kill the white. That makes Asia different.
@@alimohammad1934 Not killing is all good. But my point is that you don't want to treat someone the way you don't want to be treated yourself. Casual and subtle discrimination is much more common in Asia because most people don't have this idea of race here unlike USA

These young men don't understand that no one cares about your feelings. People are allowed to be racist, exploit you, be rude to you. We should embrace all people equally. Hate crime should not be accepted.
