  • Two nights before the premiere of Caddyshack, Johnny Carson welcomed Rodney Dangerfield to the Tonight Show stage, “My next guest has a lot of things going. He’s starring in a movie which opens nationally Friday, July 25th, called Caddyshack. He’s got a new album out called No Respect. He’s a good friend and a funny man. Would you welcome, Rodney Dangerfield!”
Originally aired July 23, 1980 on the Tonight Show.
0:59 “I checked into a hotel, I asked the bellhop to handle my bag. He started to feel up my wife.”
2:00 “I was a very ugly kid. Everytime my old man wanted to have sex, my mother showed him my picture.”
6:47 “I know I’m getting old. I’m at the age now if I hear someone goes both ways, I figure it’s number one and number two.”

Unforgettable, forever more. One of a kind. Younger comedians loved Rodney out of respect and guidance. i saw Chris Rock on the Actor's Studio with James Lipton. He shared a great story, as an up and coming comedian on SNL. Rock was appearing at a Comedy Club, and went to the men's room after his gig. Standing next to the urinal was Dangerfield. Chris said he felt he totally killed the audience in his set. They loved him! But Rodney looks at him over his shoulder while taking his leak, and sez, "You're funny kid.. But lose all the vulgar swear words. It will kill you and your act,.:(sic).Chris Rock felt crushed about Rodney's criticism. He said he was depressed for a few weeks....cause he loved Rodney Dangerfield. But Chris decided to stay his course. So it turns out about 3 yrs later, Rock is doing another stand up comedy gig. After the show, he is sitting at his table, having a drink and chilling out from the adrenalin...and lo and behold, here comes Rodney Dangerfield. Hadn't seen him since having a pee together 3 yrs earlier. But Rock's fame has doubled over these years. Rodney comes up to him, puts his big hand on his shoulder, and says "Kid, never take anyone's advise. You are great!": True story!
Long live Rodney Dangerfield, one of the funniest and greatest comedians ever; a true peer of Don Rickles, Richard Pryor, Steve Martin and many more!

What an amazing moment, right before Caddyshack one of the funniest movie performances ever. Rodney mentiomed preferring live performing, and I've heard an interview I think with Harold Ramis who said that Rodney thought he wasn't funny because he was so used to immediate laughter after this jokes, and of course everyone had to not laugh when filming. They would burst out laughing once he yelled cut, and Harold assured him he was a riot.

Truly one of the most original and best comedians and comic actors ever. Rodney's humor and schtick is the 'gift that keeps on giving'. "My mother never breastfed me"? Aw C'mon! Genius line!

Rodney Dangerfield used comedy as a way to get away from the depression and pain that he suffered from. His upbringing was extremely tumultuous as he suffered from poverty in his youth, he was abandoned by his father at an early age, he was hated, belittled, and neglected by both his mother and his sister, he suffered from antisemitic bullying, and it was said that he was molested as a child also. He literally had to take care of himself early on and also took any job he was able to get in order to support his poor family even though he was unloved. He basically used humor as a way to cope with his horrific childhood, as well as the negative things that he witnessed growing up.

I loved this funny guy! Rodney was filming Easy Money in Staten Island, NY. It was at this house where everyone was in the back yard celebrating his daughter's wedding. Now all the stars had campers(RV's) as their dressing room. They were parked on the street, and I knew the teamster driver, who was driving Rodney's RV. he told me this Rodney is driving me nuts! He couldn't get any drugs or marijuana, so he told me to go to a store nearby and get some Airplane Glue!! He was a great comedian, and his material was said in 'rapid fire'. A human comedy machine, who lived to be in his 80's! Unbelievable funny guy!!!!
