    I just bought a brand new Audio-Technica AT-LP1240-USB. I highly recommend it. I know a guy who has a Technics 1200, and he even admitted the AT-1240 is just as good if not better. The new Technics 1200 is better than the old, but basically on par with the Audio-Technica. The good thing about the AT-LP1240, is that they are only $400-$500 everywhere. Pair it up with a good Ortofon Cartridge, and you'd be hard pressed to find a Technics that is audibly superior.

    Since I can not afford the "G" model, I bought the SL-1210GR from B & H. I got the features I wanted, which are absent on my 43 year old Sony PS-4750. These features I perceive will assure better performance than what my Sony can deliver. So far, I sense it is delivering better in all manner that better can be discerned. At any rate, the features I was seeking were: leveling feet, speed stability, adjustable VTA, and azimuth adjustment via adjustable headshell. For these features and more, I believe the US $1699.99 price for the SL-1210GR is fair. Now, about a year ago I bought an Audio-Technica 120 USB as a gift to my mother-in-law. It has the features found on the Technics for a 1/5th of the Technics cost; but, measurable performance is far less than the Technics. It also has less torque, a non functioning anti-skate device, and greater tonearm friction. Surprisingly, it still plays records without distortion with its stock cartridge, which cannot be adjusted properly for VTA unless it is shimmed (shim not provided), even though the turntable has a VTA adjustment feature.

      The first AT-LP120s were a disaster if you ask me. No working antiskate and the output signal path had a small lowpass filter that needed to be unsoldered because it was active even when not using the internal preamp.
      Luckily, Audio Technica addressed all this in the LP140 which is basically a Hanpin OEM on par with the other OEMs like the Pioneer PLX-1000 or the Reloop RP-7000Mk2.

    Part of the reason it's SOOO expensive is that the direct drive motor is a brand new one piece design, and they had to re-engineer the tone arm (and they had to get some employees out of retirement to make it).
    It's essentially a whole new turntable..... that just looks exactly like the old one.

    I bought the SL1200G for a very good price. No regrets. I also own a mint SL1210 mkll both excellent. The SL1200G sounds incredibly detailed at frequency extremes with my Nagaoka MP-200. The older Technics still sounds awesome but does lack that detail. Bass is more defined for sure on the 1200G. Surface noise seems less obvious too. Without an A/B comparison you wouldn't notice. Build is way better and its very heavy. Looks super cool too 👍

    Here in Tucson, the prices on the second-hand vinyl market, both gear and LPs, are going through the roof. I almost sold my vinyl collection, while not enormous, for fifty cents apiece twenty years ago. I actually thought CD would surpass LP in quality. I'm glad I kept them. I also kept a Technics SL-10 in perfect condition. I find it very interesting that new preamps and integrated amps are including DACS but also phono preamps. Imagine all the old vinyl and vinyl spinning gear in barns all over the world. It's fun listening to old vinyl. Digital music doesn't interest me. Give me the old stuff.
    Oh yeah, another great video. Thanks, Vintage Stereo.

      +speidi 1. I agree with you there . I will give you a hint not buy the vinyls they sell now in music stores new they aren't recorded the same since it is only digitaly recorded just like a CD , is why i prefer to buy the original records from 1950,1960,1970,1980,1990 but even in the '90's some Electronic music vinyls were digitaly recorded was easily to hear .

    • @speidi1
      @speidi1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +defiraphi Agree. Digital screwed everything up, in my opinion. I've got cassettes I recorded myself on nice quality Sony and Akai decks in the mid-seventies on TDK AD and Maxell UD tape that sound, to me anyway, better than CD or other digital formats. I guess I'm just more in tune with analog. I'm looking for good sound, not convenience.

    That Jensen GTA 230 player you mentioned is not *turntable* - it's a record player. A turntable (traditionally) dosen't contain amplification or speakers. Ok,
    some newer designs have USB, Bluetooth and a phono preamp but still has no speakers enclosed. Hope this helps others out.

    It is an astonishing product, always was. I use to have 1210 MkII and probably will spend money to get the new 1200. Now, If i still had the 1210, i wouldn't be interested in buying it. I know Technics did upgrade the new models, but not that much that it would justify spending $4000 on something that is slightly better. However, since I don't have a turntable at all at the moment, this would be a really nice Christmas in July :)

    Is it true that the "new" 50th Anniversary Technics is gonna cost $4000? Really? As you say, most of us audiophiles can't afford to pay that much for a turntable. I'm glad that I got mine -an SL-1200 MK2 from 1979- for 303 dollars 2 years ago.

    Wonderful share! Might anyone know if the speed can be manually adjusted on this turntable if the strobe light indicates the need? This TT would be used at home. I am not a DJ so I have no idea if the slide mechanism to the right of the tonearm can be used to make micro adjustments to freeze the strobe light at the perfect 33 speed. Thanks!

    • @maraminjo2
      @maraminjo2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      of course you can, but it's always stable at 0, you have + and - speed, it's called a pitch control, that's how you are mixing songs, matching BPM's.

  • @VinylRescue
    @VinylRescue 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh hell no on the Jensen TT! I bought the Audio-Technica AT-LP120 about 4 years ago, but I've had to put a lot of work into it to play my albums to my standard. Two major things I did was rip out the built-in preamp and solder in a pair of shielded RCA cables to the tone arm wires for a direct connection to my preamp. All your points are right on regarding this TT. Yeah I would love to buy one of these, but I like you and most others won't be able to afford it. What ever happened to mass production and selling it for a reasonable price??

  • @michaelhorgan9525

    Andrew, I bought Jensen Turntable for my young daughter this last Christmas.... Here is my review... First, I bought it because of the Jensen name, It's cheaply made I knew that before I bought it... the sound out of the built in speakers is horrible. The control arm requires a penny to be taped above the cartridge or the needle will rapidly skip on record. The output phono jacks will not produce any sound if connected directly to external speakers. The output phono jacks must be hooked into an amplifier. The sound quality is much better when it is hooked into an external amplifier.

    this new sl is stunning but will be out of reach for many Dj's around the world, it's a real shame, even in years to come you will not see these decks second hand to often, I feel they will be very very expensive, technics have forgot the like myself, but I hope I am wrong. me personally if I wanted a new deck it could only be a SL'S nothing else will do. please technics sort the price of this deck out.

    I still see some refurb MK5's on the internet and some really nice ones from Japan. Of course, you will need a transformer, or one of those fancy KAB power supplies to use them in Europe, but should work in the US ok. MK2's in good condition are getting hard to find. I have been looking for one for a while, and I might as well just get a MK5 from that was refurbished by STokyo or even a nice one from Japan.

    Nice review but at the end of the day it's an old DJ work horse that the accountants at Panasonic are seeing pound / Dollar / Euro sign's as DJ's that used these deck's in the 70's have some free cash now they are in their 50 - 60 age group it's a nostalgia thing. There are so many better sounding deck's on the market to listen to music on.

      +xxX_BomBer_Xxx technics stop making the sl-1200 in 2010, it was selling here in the netherlands for 1600 euro(old stock). Now they are back with the same turntable only with a better motor and a few little adjustments and the price is double!!!! this is how companies work these days. The few adjustments doesn't cost them more as 50 euro but they charge the costumer minimum 1500 euro for it because suddenly the tt is now a high grade audiophile tt what it also was in the past.

      +vintage stereo How come the Sl-MKII 1200 was 1600€ in Netherlands ? I bought mine in 1997 , for 22,500BEf ( i'm from Belgium) so in Euro it made 650€ , do they double,triple the price each year or what? The Limited Gold version back in 1997 between 900€-1300€ depending from which store you bought it . Anyway i'm with +xxX_BomBer_Xxx i stick with my old SL's since there's really no new improvements, just a better motor and the buttons being more smooth doesn't make me want to change and pay ridiculously for such Turntable . There were alot clones but alot of them fails drasticaly i can name a few Stanton, Numark,Akiyama, Gemini ,etc... As i didn't know Technics changed names to Audiophile kinda a bad move for a legendary Brand that sold high quality HiFi and Speakers decades ago . I know that Panasonic-Technics was the same Brand one more for Audio and the other more for TV .

    wh5000at you see is a huge demand for dual models, since the usual tone-arm ain't bad. But witch normal consumer does een want a 80% beat of turntables....young guys, and the only whatch the outside, on a 20-30 year old turntable...electronic value:nothing and only the newer mk5 makes any sence, but the quality is so outdated, I have refurbushed a mk5, only i'm pretty hoogh educated in micro electronics... A normal person hasn't have the knowledge and gear to upgrade an mk2, and i'm not talking about spraypainting.... But they ain't worth it.... i'd rather use vestax mix.... or vestax pdx 2000mk2, and a couples of layers of strengtheting ..... and use thhe bitumen to remove the echo on the the old platters...perfect..... But when it comes to my hifi turntantable, goldnote.... with also a goldnote amp and a seperate own build phono-pre-amp.. then the 4000euro is expensive... It's the class where you don't want to be in as manufacturer of midrange hifi....but everybody with their ninsense talk that the 1200mk2 is hifi.... Maybe they came close when they were real brand new... not those latest with old stuf and ban ...everything...pcb's transformers ..Only a hifi platter sets you back 1000 ,feet 200, hifi arm....700, bearings 500, powersupply+onboard compents 150 diiy offcourse.... But then you have a real nice table, only you'll never see that mooney back when you sell it and it stays an old thing.

  • @hurkamur1
    @hurkamur1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    😂 No "audiophile" is gonna buy this thing, you can get a scout 2 or a second hand scoutmaster for 2k. The only market for a table like this is for DJs, most of which have moved on to digital. Panasonic could have sold so many of these if they had marginally improved the old design, and kept th e price under 600. Your 5 minutes of research shows that a 100 turntable is the best seller, one would think that Panasonic, would have done a little better market research. You can still get og 1200s for 200-500 dollars in my town. Great tables to be sure, but 2k? Not so much. I like the way you say vinyl btw :)

      +hurkamur1 I hope panasonoc will also make some other turntables when this expensive TOL is a success. Why not use the same new engine for more affordable step in turntables without the extra DJ functions, think of a tt with no automatic functions at all and another one with all automatic functions but without the DJ functions. But both with the same beautiful aluminium brushed front like these 2.

      +Vic G There's a reason they haven't included this feature in the past, cos it makes sense not to. The 1200 series were predominantly used by DJ's, manual tables are simpler as a rule and less to repair when things go wrong. They also give you choice of tone arm and plinth etc. which is not possible on automatic. IMO every record lover who is able to, should know how to manually handle a tonearm

      +foofoo01323 I just found out that both the limited edition as the normal version will have the same price, 4000 $. It's just crazy. Hope that panasonic will bring out cheaper models because this model is way to expensive for 99% of all audio lovers

      +EastAngliaUK The industries are sleeping, when a marantz 2600 cost today so much money, why cant they ,make similar products? I bet they would sell many receivers when they would mixed the old and new in 1 machine

    Andrew that turntable is an abomination. I went to the local mall and saw alot of similar turn tables. The shops are trying to cash in on the vinyl comeback,. But as you say these very entry level turntables look like toys. Better to go second hand or buy a new Project or Rega..

      Bullshit! He's absolutely right. A new turntable for around 100 $ or € is a piece of crap and nothing but a waste of money...

      +frankie28web I think we've had a misunderstanding I thought he was referring to the new technics deck as that's what I thought this video was referring to I'm confused but yes 100 turntables will be shite

    • @NeyDogg
      @NeyDogg 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +MrDjhellfire apologies for the confusion . The technics turntable is great and certainly not an abomination . I believe most people respect the technics direct turntables even die hard audiophiles that order belt driven turntables . What I find an abomination is that black plastic piece of junk that Amazon is selling a. It's just away that manufacturers are making a quick buck with that plastic garbage . Probably cost $5.00 to make.

      +Rene Ellis I totally agree I am lucky to have a pair of mk2's bought new 15 years ago and I see them as works of art and I feel passionate about defending the brand, I'm so happy about the new turntable release so the legacy can live on, peace.

      The new 1200's already sold out! Technics is thinking about producing more.
      I agree 4,000 dollars is a lot. I paid $396.00 a piece for mines back in the early 90's. People 4,000 dollars for those only emboldens Technics to keep the price the same...
