Toyota started operations more than 10 years before Hindustan Motors. So also other Japan companies like Suzuki and Nissan. Hindustan Motors was formed as joint venture between Birla Group and Morris motors in 1942.
Hindustan Motors was dominating Indian market for about 4 decades without any significant competitors and it was like their monopoly in Indian market. The same model continued all most unchanged and only with non significant changes in the front grill and the light models, while the car industry worldwide was modernizing their Cars in appearance with improved engines. Finally when foreign players were allowed to start manufacturing in India, Hindstan Motors could not survive since their car models became outdated. Since people had no other options, they were forced to by these Cars and its so called popularity was only due to their monopoly. There were much better cars available outside India, while people in India were deprived of buying other cars. If Toyota or any such good Companies were allowed in India along with HM, nobody might have bothered to buy Ambassador cars.

In a trip to Muthalappozhi beach in Tvpm, I have gone to a wrong path. On recognising, I have taken reverse to a vacant land but unfortunately the car's back side hit on a coconut tree. On gettingout, I could not find even a scratch on its bumper or body. But while waiting in traffic signal, one ford car hit on front bumper on side of the kwid I was driving; and the kwid's bumper totally tornout and replacement cost a lot.
