Hooray for language revitalization! Let's all work hard to respect the richness of indigenous cultures and languages. Imagine this lady, being told her entire life that her language is inferior, that it's useless, and now she can finally see it used in a modern context. She can finally see her language respected and taken seriously. Imagine how she must feel!

They were not allowed to speak our language and had to speak only in English, if they were caught speaking in Navajo (Díné) then they would be punished. My mother along with her sister and many Navajo children were sent out to Utah to live with white families who were in the Mormon religion (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). There, they went through assimilation as they were call "Lamanites" from the Book of Mormon which were considered bad people that were cursed with dark skin. The white families and church used this program to enlist as many children into their religion and to "kill the indian" and save the human. In the 1990's was when the Indian Placement Program or Lamanite Placement Program ended.
That is precious. What a perfect joyful and youthful laugh comes from this beautiful older lady. That makes me so happy. I grew up in New Mexico and spent a lot of time in Gallup, Grants, Milan and the surrounding areas. I miss the sound of hearing this beautiful language. Thank you for sharing this!

I was fortunate enough to meet both my grandmother's and great grandmother's. They are all gone now and I miss them but I know I'll see them again when I journey into the next life.
I remember my dad showing me this when this went viral on Facebook. This was a video of my nalílady. She passed about a two years ago. So sad she doesn't get to see me graduate with two more years left in high school. It's not goodbye, it's see you later. Love you Nalí
