beautiful tones and intonations, interesting free solo and rhythm variations, nice clean bass solo... and your own mark on the final melody section. superb emotional connotation and wonderful freedom in the laid back sense of time. goodbye pork pie hat. you put something of lester young and the attachment and mourning for a hero of jazz. you caught something of the mingus intensity in his tribute. this piece goes deep. even the backdrop for the video set-up matches the mood. pretty impressive for a live recording.. thanks, greg.
Dear Lionhearted2000..what a nice, telling tribute to the player. Got some history knowledge showing. I don't have such, but know it when I see it. By the way...your screen name honors our Knight Templar King...Richard 1 thanks !
This has got to be one of the most beautiful renditions of Monk's classic piece. Howard's approach, phrasing, and technique is near otherworldly, which is why I added this vid to my collection, "NOTofTHISearth". I have yet to tire of watching this or feeling it. A big HUZZAH to Greg Howard!
Thanks for the kind comment. At this time, I believe I was playing a standard pickup-equipped Stick through a Rane SP-13 and a Lexicon MPX-G2 processor. Happy Viewing.
Greg:Great Playing to us Stick Players... I have only been playing 11 months but your videos have really been a help and very inspiring... please post more....thanks Frank
Thanks. Yes, it's like guitar and bass together, but also has keyboard and even percussion elements. Stick dot com is the website. Check it out and thanks for listening!
Hey Greg. Just thought I'd let you know this is probably one of my favorite solo Stick performances. I love this song dearly and your arrangement comes alive!
@pencert Thanks for such a kind comment. I really like your take on how The Stick presents a new avenue for amplified music. Sounds like you've got the bug....:)
Hi Iurli, The Stick has fairly loose strings, and the action is very low, so that makes tapping much easier than on a guitar. I hope you get a chance to try one out someday. Thnaks for watching, and Happy Tapping, Greg
Killer performance. You're obviously a musician of a very high caliber, I want to play like you. That's a really fascinating alternate evolution in amplified music. The predominant forms have been based on styles of distortion, but this thing really blows my mind in that it takes advantage of the amplification to create something entirely new. I've thought to myself many times that I wish you could make a guitar sound like Bill Evans, and I think if anyone will it will be with the Chapman Stick.
Amazing performance - Greg Howard and other great Stick players, make me consider seriously, giving up guitar and switching to the Stick. I don't think I could play both!
I have always dreamed of owning one of these fantastic instruments almost from the day they came out. "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" was of course one of the songs I wanted to learn on it. I love Jeff Beck's take on it as much as I like the original Mingus version.
Thanks for the kind comments. I too, heard the Jeff Beck version first. For me the song is very simple, really a blues, but with some extra vocabulary. The Stick is a clearer emotional pathway than keyboards (which I played before), and this song is so flexible in the way it can be interpreted, that I think it's perfect for The Stick. So I agree!
This song lends itself to a Stick perfectly... perhaps due to the fact that Mingus was a bass player and had a deep understanding of how the bottom and the top of a song work together? Hell I don't know. It's a damn good song and you play a DAMN fine version of it.
The original tune was written by bassist/composer Charles Mingus and the only resemblance is the actual melody.Mingus' version was more in the be-bop vein but not entirely be-bop. It has a cool jazz club vibe to it.One of my fav standards.
I guess spectacular might cover this one. If we "learn" to do this, who needs a bass, or a guitar, or piano, violin, or I think I heard a clarinet in there somewhere as well.
wonderful greg.... a friend bought a stick in 1977 and played it around Ft Worth and Austin. A Stick also provided the traditional music at my wedding in 2000. I have to ask...are you a fan of Bruce Cockburn, the musical poet laureat of Canada? I hear that same ' high lonesome' in the Stick that I hear in his open tunings and phrasings.
Wow, this moves Greg. Rare these days that anyone 'feels it". I really enjoyed this and look forward to more after subscribing to gregplaysthestick. SAW
John McLaughlin played this on a great album of his...one whole side of tunes like this...no flash. The big sound always kills me on these...so I always ask...what amp and what reverb or preamp produces this big sound?
This really moved me. I kinda get that 80s Blade Runner neon opera sound from it. Do you have an album or mp3 i can listen to? If you do be so kind to write me a message pls.
Is it difficult to achive a sound like this? I've tried to tap on my guitar and it sounded slappy and noisy. After watching your videos with stick, I really began dreaming about buying a stick. Do I have to buy much electronics beside stick to achive a sound that is not so bad as it was on my guitar when I tapped? :)

Tone, feel, phrasing, invention, blues - this is righteous. A lot of stick players ignore dyamics and play with a tinny, sharp tone. This is great!
This is one of my favorite musical performances of all time.
Thanks! I once had the pleasure of playing this in a club in New York. Eric Mingus and family were in the house. a real honor.
Very kind of you, Andy. It's probably my favorite tune to play as well.
One of the most beautiful chord progressions in Jazz. You do justice to it, Greg. Nice!
You give the soul of the tunes, you are great musician, thx
Fantastic rendition of this song. Always one of my favorites.
Thanks for the kind comment. At this time, I believe I was playing a standard pickup-equipped Stick through a Rane SP-13 and a Lexicon MPX-G2 processor. Happy Viewing.
This is more than stick chops, it's music!
Awesome!
Probably the best use of a Chapman Stick I have ever seen. Face-melter.
Greg:Great Playing to us Stick Players... I have only been playing 11 months but your videos have really been a help and very inspiring... please post more....thanks Frank
I'm addicted, to listening to this instrument......and this vid contribute's to my addiction..lol very nice
WOOOOOO wonderful greg....thanks for show us your music
Easily the most musically satisfying Stick performance I've heard. Love this tune dearly, and your treatment does it justice.
Astounding, beautiful, soulful, and masterful.
Thanks SO much for posting this lovely version of a great song.
WOW, just WOW. Bravo, Maestro!!!
Incredibly soulful performance Greg!
The intro to this is divine.
Dynamical, musical, exciting. Great kind of expression. Very nice, Greg.
Greetings
Mathias
real conection with the spirit of music just awesome !
That was excellent, great choice in the piece, and played to perfection!
bravo dude beautiful tune ,and you are an inspiration to us humble tappers
Great rendition. I love this song. Mingus sure new how to groove with the blues.
O, Jazz is Freedom!! Thank to Greg
Pure blue and lovely.
Thanks so much, that was a fun gig.
Well done, Sir! Way to capture the spirit. Thank you.

Best video on this site.

Beautiful cover on a unique instrument!
Always amazing
The Stick is like anything else. If it moves you, get one and study it. It's really not that hard, more mental than anything. Many thanks.

awesome ! you have a new fan in France !
Love the tune and really dig your version. Masterfully done!

Please make more jazz arrangements. You properly convey the feeling that mingus put into his music

The Bass Harmonic at :58. ... ...Perfect
I don't normally like the sound you give your stick, despite how well you play it. This one sounds really appealing to me.
phenomenal
@AchillesStandsOn Thanks so much. What an incredibly nice thing to write.
All this time later I still come back to it every couple months.
Brilliant!!! Wow.
Thanks so much, very kind comment.

Excellent playing as always, Greg! Such a killer grove!
I'm a Stick newbie but I hope to have your chops one day. MUCH more practice needs to happen!
I love "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" but on the beautifull of the Chapman stick it sounds so smooth, it give's me chickenskin all over the body

Hi, what amp and effects are you using with the stick, i used to have one but it sounded awful, do you need a volume peda;?
Beautiful playing!!
cheers!
