I thought Ninten was good until I saw what Ana could do. While Ninten has some good abilities, his problem is that he runs out of PP eventually. Not so with Ana. Running low on PP? Find a PSI using enemy, use PSI Block on it And then use PSI Net(?) to recharge her reserves back to full. She does all this while healing AND doing damage. She puts the Energizer Bunny to shame.

For the whole Naoto voice thing, in Japan it's fairly common for female actors to play young men, and her voice is much more ambiguous.
I don't know if there was really a good way to translate that to English without giving it away, so I can't fault their casting decision

    • @mrmagoo-i2l

It’s also true in a English.

She also uses male-pronouns to refer to herself in the Japanese version until the 'reveal', but there's no equivalent to that in English. I suppose they could have had her lower her voice a touch but that kind of playacting sounds out of place for such a serious-minded character. Constantly speaking higher or lower than your usual takes a lot of concentration she could be using on the case.

So Naoto earnestly did need buffs since she was arguably the weakest character when it came to fighting bosses, since Hama and Mudo skills won't work on them and almighty spells are very inefficient compared to physicals or elemental magic. Not having a weakness is extremely good but she's also just kinda frail stats wise, for example Margaret can sometimes manage to kill her from full through guarding with her Power Charge Hassou Tobi combo. Now she'd be potentially incredible if P4 had Bless/Curse damage spells like P5 but it doesn't and that robs her of her true potential.

Here are a few more I've unearthed:
-Mae from Shining Force. Mobility plus long-range weapons plus early recruitment, Mae is bae
-Finn from Child of Light. The guy knows practically every magic spell and can take advantage of nearly every enemy weakness. It's silly how much of a wrecking ball he is.
-Conspiracy Guy from Citizens of Earth. Nearly every single one of his attacks exploits an enemy weak spot, plus you can recruit him very early.
-Kain from Radiata Stories. Although recruiting him takes some effort, you'll be glad you did. He's the best healer in the game, can auto-heal (and teaches YOU this technique), his attack can unbalance anything (including bosses), and you get him about halfway through the game.

Flonne is even more busted in Disgaea Dimension 2 (the sequel to Disgaea 1). Then again, MAGIC ITSELF was busted in DD2. Magic gets damage multipliers based on Weapon Mastery, and physicals don't. That's on top of the insane long range, the high damage magic does (WITHOUT the damage multipliers they get on top), and being able to hit for elemental weaknesses. And the game casually let's you teach all element spells to everyone if you want to.
Make a female healer? You can turn her into a wrecking ball as well. Your actual mage? You can give her healing spells, and she'll be a wrecking ball too.
Give Laharl magic? He'll do more damage with spells than he ever did with physical skills (despite having average magical aptitudes).
DD2 was a mess balance wise....

On the tactical JRPGs, two come to mind:
Linea from Stella Deus, and Euphoria "Euphy" from Seinarukana.
Linea is an archer/mage, which means loooong range. You get her almost at the beginning, she has insane range, her arrows are powerful, and as she learns more spells/skills, she gets even more damage potential. Plus, she is fast, which means that, even if she does not 1HKO an enemy, she will have a turn very soon again to finish the job. Because of that, she levels up pretty fast, which only makes her more deadly. And cherry on top: she gets the OPed summon spells, which can tear groups of mobs with impunity, to say nothing of her Team Tech, especially hers and Spero's.
Now, Euphy. For those who do not know Seinarukana, or its predecesor, Aselia the Eternal, it is a Strategy JRPG with a unique battle system, where you can form squads of 3 (Attacker, Defender and Mage) who each contribute a their 2 cents to the battle, including their individual HP pools; or use an All-rounder who can do all three tasks, but has only 1 HP bar. Euphy is the first true Jack of all trades you get, since she is equally good as a squad member or an All-rounder., but she shines better as an All-rounder. Her skills are pretty powerful, and she has the stats to back them up. As soon as you are able to use her, you will most often than not just send her to battle on her own and watch her plow through the enemy squads. Yes, you get Narukana on the last quarter of the game, and she is Euphy 2.0, but even then, Euphy never really gets outclassed.

Probably my favorite thing about these overpowered party members lists in seeing characters from games I had trouble with before, playing them again with this advice in mind and seeing how much easier the game becomes!
I do have a couple of suggestions if you're planning to do another one-
Karna from Shining Force II- At first glance Karna (or Twiggy as she's known in some versions), looks like your typical white mage. However, because she starts off with the multi-target Boost spell, she can gain levels at ludicrous speed. Just a white mage with a solid pool of HP, the multi-target healing spell Aura and plenty of MP to repeatedly cast it would be nice enough on it's own, but if you choose to make her a Master Monk, she'll get all the above mentioned advantages as well as being able to hit like a truck. Couple that with the ludicrous speed at which she can gain levels by casting Boost and Aura and you'll soon end up with a unit who can handle all the remaining maps single handed.
Donnel from Fire Emblem Awakening- Again, this is a character you have to work at to get the best out of him, but the force of destruction that rewards your patience is well worth it. His Aptitude Skill boosts Growth Rates by 20% whenever he levels up. Because of this skill, he can easily end up with some of the best stats of all the First generation units. Best of all, he can pass this skill down to one of the future child characters, making Donnel's future child an honorable mention.
Aika from Skies of Arcadia- She's always useful to have around. She gets multi-target attacks like Alpha Storm pretty early in the game, making short work of random mobs, and later the more powerful multi-target Lamba Burst. Additionally, her Delta Shield negates all magic attacks, even the annoying instant-death spells. It's only draw back is that you can't use healing magic on the party, but with the use of healing items, this is hardly an issue. Later on she can also get the deceptively powerful Swirlmerang weapon- a boomerang with 200% hit rate, meaning that it can actually his the annoying Loopers and it will always confuse whatever it hits.
Jolteon from Pokemon Yellow- This one's more of a joke entry, but given your criteria of characters that outshine the main character, if you consider Pikachu the main character of the game, then Jolteon could feasibly fit. Most players will keep Pikachu as the go-to electric type on their team, but it's stats are still pretty low, so It might struggle a bit in late-game challenges. Thankfully, you can get your own Eevee and by extension, your own Jolteon as soon as you get to Celedon City. Jolteon is much faster and more powerful than Pikachu, with some of the highest Special Attack and Speed stats of the electric type Pokemon. Not only is it a better glass cannon than Pikachu, but it even has higher defence and special defence. Basically Jolteon is Tales Of The Abyss' Guy to Pikachu's Luke.

Two more I thought of while mulling about at work
    1) Marina in Valkyria Chronicles. The sniper class in general is OP, but with one really easy level up, her accuracy becomes 100% and she can just headshot everything. You can also start the game with her if you're lucky (I think some speedrunners literally reset if she's not in the base roster, it's not insanely rare and every character will unlock eventually, but having her in the start is the best)
    2) Agito from Lost Dimension. He can teleport and can use this to go through even locked doors. He also has the ability to instantly teleport summon the rest of your entire party later on. There's one map where you're meant to go around the long way due to a locked door because you only have to defeat the big enemy on that map. Guess what? Agito can teleport, warp everyone to him, then the pain can begin as every character who is nearby will join in a combo attack. There are 6 party members, and the other 5 basically each get 6 hits due to them + 5 more party members. It can reduce bosses to nothing quickly

@@Jfray252 Her almighty damage is insane? Here, let's do some math:
Megidolaon has 420 base power, for 60 SP.
-Dyne skills have 320 base power, for 12 SP.
Megidolaon deals 1.3x the damage for 3x the SP cost.
But every other party member besides Chie also gets Boost and Amp skills, which boost their damage further. This brings the base power of -Dyne skills to 560, doing 1.3x the damage of Naoto's Megidolaon, for a third of the cost.
But let's get Mind Charge in the mix: Mind Charge boosts a move's power by 2.5x which brings Megidolaon's power to 1050 for 75 SP in total. Since it takes two turns to pull off, let's compare it to two uses of a Boost + Amp -Dyne skill: 560 x 2 = 1120, *still* more powerful than a Mind Charged Megidolaon for only 24 SP.
      But what about her stats?
Admittedly, the SMT Wiki only has stats for their initial personas at level 99, so I don't know how much of a boost they'll get from their third tier personas. But assuming the general comparisons remain true, we see Naoto's magic is equal to Yosuke, and inferior to Teddie and Yukiko's magic stats, her main competition as magic users.
And as for how Chie and Kanji's damage compare, God's Hand has 1600 base power, and Primal Force 2200, easily out damaging everyone else.
She can cover all elements? Well you're right, that is a useful skill. It's a good thing that Yu can do that too, and much, *much* better.
The problem with Naoto is that she tries to be a jack of all trades in a game where the protagonist is a master of all. Therefore, the rest of the party members being specialists is much more beneficial.

He has a unite with the hero of the current game that hits everything, and can equip 2 other runes. He's powerful in both magic and physical attacks. He makes it well worth carrying over your save from the first game.

kel from omori is ridiculously op to the point where in any boss battle i had everyone else just running support he has a technique that has been appropriately named the kel nuke by the community it takes a turn to set up though, and needs help from your party. have one party member make the enemy angry(the game runs on rock paper scissors style emotion status effects ) have another party member make kel happy, have the third party member use coffee on kel(a powerful speed buff consumable that is infinitely replenishable if you know how) and make kel flex(a move that makes your next attack do 2.5x the damage) on the next turn kel just has to run and gun, a move that uses his speed stat for damage. all those bufs stack on each other, this can have kell doing upwards of 4000 damage while the other party members are still in the double digits. he becomes even better if you get the chicken ball, a hidden weapon that boosts his speed by 200 which is 100 more than his "ultimate" weapon gives him

Naoto was ass in the OG Persona 4. She only really works against normal enemies, and against bosses all she really has are Megido spells, which cost too much SP for her small SP pool. In Golden they're more worth it because she actually gets Mind Charge. I can agree Naoto is pretty good in Golden, but in the OG P4 hell no.

Ana does help make things much easier in the long run in a difficult game. I'm also glad to see Guy, Rita, Peco, Rei, Sylvando on the lists too. I'm hoping see some of these other characters too:
Scias(Breath of Fire IV) Just his high damage output and most of his weapons allowing him to hit twice especially with the Render. Surprised he didn't mae it yet.
Rutger and Clarine(Fire Emblem 6) Insane Critical Rate that gets even higher when supported with Clarine who herself has high evasion and high movement which makes her the best healer in the game.
Ange(Tales of Innocence) Just the high combo damage she can deal with her basic attack alone as well as her healing abilities.
Frimelda(FFTA2) A later optional character whih starts off the bat with high attack, defense, and dual wielding.
Elize Lutus(Tales of Xillia) Same thing applies with Raine, but she's far more broken here with her nearly instant healing, dispelling, damage control etc.
Hubert and Cheria(Tales of Graces) They;'re both very flexible with the game's battle systems. Hubert has the highest attack power and combo potential and one of the best accels in the game. Same with Cheria. She can heal, use offensive magic, and has the best stun rate for enemies as well as arguably the best accel which stops time for a bit.
Hawkeye(Trials of Mana) Can attack twice, powerful lvl 1 tech, and his dark classes breaks the game.

And if for some reason she's actually in danger of dying and low on SP, you can Magichange her onto a fist fighter for more good times.

    • @viggy1637

Actually, despite popular belief, MAG doesn't affect your Elemental Defense in the damage formula. Only Endurance stat, Equipped Armor, Attack Debuffs (on attacker)/Defense Buffs (on defender), Character Level (weird, I know), and Elemental Resist can reduce damage taken. Similarly, High STR doesn't affect Physical Defense. I still agree on Yukiko being pretty strong though, she fits two niches and fits them well. Most of the last party members in persona games try to juggle too many roles at once and wind up tripping (Ken, Naoto, Haru in specifics. Though I use Ken over Yukari still).

Felix from 3 houses: Felix has a great equipment draw and can be a theif, a brawler, or a mortal sevant and wreck your enemies up.

Sabin: Like his brother, Sabin can blitz the for hard hitting moves like pummel and really save your but during boss fights.

Of course Raja has to be the 5th party member in Phantasy Star IV. I've found that things tend to be much easier in most RPGs when you have two healers instead of one. Having Raja in your party allows Rika to spend more time inflicting damage upon bosses (while occasionally acting as a back-up healer). While Rika is a competent healer, she is also a competent fighter - making more like the Cleric from Dragon Quest. Raja, on the other hand, is more of a dedicated healer like the White Mage from Final Fantasy.
In boss fights, Raja focuses on healing the entire party. Rika can either (depending on the situation): 1) physically attack the boss; 2) keep Raja's health up so he doesn't get KO'd; 3) restore the health of a single party member who is near death while Raja focuses on healing the whole party; 4) cast a second full-party healing spell alongside Raja if the entire party is near death; or 5) cast status buffs while Rajas does the healing. And if a character gets KO'd, Raja can do the reviving, while Rika does the healing. That way, Chaz can keep on fighting without needing to stop to do the reviving.
I've found the two really go great together.

Not sure i agree with your Flonne entry, specailly since considering Disgaea's mechanics, there's nothing she really does that can't be done with virtually anyone else except her 3 rather useless "personal". I mean mages in general are completely irrelevant unless you really want to play with one for flavor simply because of how versatile sword skills are as Magic's main strength is AoE, which is covered by Winged Slayer.
Idk, i beat Uber Prinny Baal in both the PS2 and PSX version without ever using her :P. Laharl is plenty OP on its own lol, i know he's the main character so can't fit here but if there would be a Runner Up, i'd pick the Divine Maijin custom character class.

Naoto isn't that good ngl. Give Yukiko Fire Boost + Fire Amp and use Blazing Petals and you get broken damage without Mind Charge. Fuse Yoshitsune for Yu and you can 1-shot most of the bosses in the game. Physical skills are better than magic skills so Power Charge severe damage skills on Chie or Kanji will be way better than any of Naotos Mind Charge heavy damage skills (I'm pretty sure she doesn't learn any severe damage skills). There's no way she outshines any of the high level Personas or even some of the other characters in the game.

@@chartsol5923 Buffs are VERY useful, they are one of the only reasons low level runs in persona games are possible, so I think that speaks volumes on how much they impact battle. AOE -Kaja skills, Yosuke's Cadenza clone, and Chie's AOE Heat Riser (ATK, DEF, Evade/Accuracy Buff) make battles go much quicker and their effects are very visible. The same applies for debuffs, by the way (Heat Riser on Yu + Debilitate on target + Power Charged Hassou Tobi = mega damage). Also, Kanji's really great as a boss HP melter, but I wish his unique skill was more useful. It seems like a waste of a skill slot on boss fights, and it just makes Yosuke, Chie, Yukiko, and even Naoto seem even more useful during end-game content (teddie's skill is also not very reliable).

It came out during Square's PS1 golden years, and even utilized pre-rendered portraits for characters. It's very interesting. I don't think there's a translation yet, but anyone who's watching this channel regularly should look into this game. It has a game structure, and visual/audio aesthetic that feels almost entirely unique to 1997~1999, and it's just too strange not to look into. I disagree about Ana being the best party member in EB Beginnings. That role goes to EVE, who's literally *invincible,* always moves first, & deals +700 damage per physical attack. EVE lacks the crowd damage Ana gets with PK Fire & Beam Psi, but her durability being infinite until you activate the scripted fight gives her unparalleled consistency, which is what you need in a game as volatile as EB0.
Not to mention Ana's severe fragility & low speed that forces the player to basically have her guard spam to have access to her powerful healing psi techniques outside of battle if the many enemies do target her, which is a very real possibility. She also lacks the stat buffing spells like, quick up, defense up/down, & offense up/down. Ninten also has 4th-D Slip, which is integral to success in this game.
so the roles are something like this:
*Ninten* - Consistent all-round that's never useless. Ninten gets shit done because he has to.
*Ana* - Glass Canon that dies as quickly as enemies if she's leveled & gets to move + better healing values.
*Loid* - Item PSI damage Gimmick. If only he had more inventory space or more items to use.
*Teddy* - The physical powerhouse when you have him, enables you to grind Ninten & Ana.
*EVE* - An invincible Teddy x100. Makes common encounters your b*tch just by blocking. There's a reason why EVE is with you for a brief period of time.

Black hole ohko's every enemy at a 100% success rate anyway though and Kyra and Rune pretty much have the same speed stat if that helps.
