Little more than a week after being elected Chinese President in early 2013, Xi Jinping embarked on his first state visit overseas. The destination he chose was Russia - a clear sign of the importance he gave to the relationship with China's vast neighbor. I'm not too sure their ideological differences are "massive", as you've put it. Fundamentally, Russia and China operate politically as Communist countries. As such their fundamental underpinnings are more in common with each other than the differences.

The closeness is in terms of geopolitics. When you observe deeply enough of present-day USA, it is in effect a plutocracy that's taken over their Constitution right at the top.
