I really like Captain Marvel - the movie as well as the character - the more I think about it, although Brie Larson's performance of Carol Danvers I think is isn't perfect, shes supposed to go from kind of repressed emotionally to more as she was when she was human, which is a smart alec and kind of pushy but still very loyal and committed, fighting against the odds for what she wants and wanting to do the right thing. That's a great arc, it's just the performance was uneven to me. It's not down to her as an actress, she's talented, but maybe it was a directing/screenwriting problem? Now we know who she is, Carol knows who she is more importantly, so I think if you have a good script and director(s) to work with, it's going to be fun, roll on an amazing Captain Marvel 2

One of the many reasons I dislike this movie - it takes so much away from what came before; sadly, most of the newest Marvel movies have been crap, IMO.
Hans Ollo idk I thought it was kinda funny but the movie was bad but it did show that fury is an actual person that gets embarrassed and makes up stuff like a skrull shot him in the eye or something

I love comedy and some marvel films have really solid comedy (Ragnarok, Infinity War, Avengers) but for the most part, I've liked how they haven't removed from the story to be funny. Take Ragnarok. There's a funny scene when Bruce jumps onto the bridge, but he doesn't transform into the hulk and it's funny. But then right after he hulks out. Infinity also handled serious and comedic moments well. But I lowkey hate how they sacrificed a crucial, serious and interesting part of Fury's character and backstory for a quick joke. They had a film where a large portion of the species are shapeshifting creatures and there are numerous twists, and they have a character who lost his eye because he trusted someone and was betrayed. That's just waisted potential.

To be fair, that's a fair point, sometimes the ending to a series can completely fuck it. I always hold off on forming an opinion on something until I've seen the full picture.
Before she was Captain Marvel, she was breaking hearts as Envy Adams in Scott Pilgrim vs the World. I highly recommend it.

I never came away from this feeling like "That's totally what Carol would do". Because she doesn't know who she was, I couldn't get a feeling for who she is. The Carol her friend describes sounds fun and amazing, she just wasn't in the movie. Because the movie spends so much time on who she was, it doesn't develop who she is. She's not Vers, she's not flashback Carol, she's Captain Marvel but I don't know what that means. I think Brie struggled developing a character who isn't around until the ending, and that's the directors fault not the actor. So I can't say "That's what Carol would do" when I can do that for Tony, Natasha, Cap, Rocket, T'challa, Parker, Nebula, and so many others. I genuinely don't know what Carol would do in an elevator fight, congress meeting, family spat, late for work, or a facing off with a goofy villain. Best guess from her two appearances? Blow everything the hell up.

I don't think Matt will like Endgame that much. It has quite a few of the things he doesn't seem to like. It has to be seen how that'll reflect in his views of the MCU as a whole.

Sat in the cinema watching this the All Stan Lee marvel intro card hit me in the feels. His cameo on the train also got me as a Kevin Smith fan because he's reading his lines from Mallrats. Which uniquely confirms its actual Stan Lee on the train not a random bystander or Watcher informant.
Well Stan Lee in that universe is both Stan Lee and Watcher Informant.
Does this mean that Mallrats is part of the MCU?

I wish Nick Fury lost it due to the skrulls directly, but looks like we'll have to take this as these were the eye-opening days where he realizes how deceptive the world can actually be. So when Steve confronts him on compartmentalizing an operation, Fury's passionate stance on it still can point to his experiences from this movie.

Loved that Kevin Smith is officially a person in the MCU through the Mallrats script and having Stan Lee brushing up on his lines was an amazing choice.
Mallrats is just amazing and Stan Lee's cameo in it is one of if not his best cameos ever!! Love Kevin Smith movies
Those were actually takes of him saying "trust me true believer" from the movie. Stan's voice was too weak to use his actual voice so he called Kevin and got Universal to dig up the old takes and used them for his dialog in the movie
Alot of these "criticisms" could be easily explained away by actually paying attention to the movie as holden demonstrated
THANK YOU!!!! Like people went into this movie and turned their brains off... They decided "this endgame is coming up soon, someone new shouldn't be paid attention to and understood." Someone should have told ALL of them that the MCU is going to continue for a long time after endgame. That Captain Marvel is PIVOTAL to the future of the MCU, being the Lynchpin between Earth and the rest of the universe. This movie sets up so much going forward, its insane.
@@Algoody421 It doesn't matter how important people think the movie or the character are. The movie itself ended up pretty mediocre with a boring protagonist. At least with the sequel they are getting new writers/director. Hopefully the sequel will make the character more interesting. To compare her to thor, thor started out as an arrogant warmongering thunder god. But throughout the course of his first movie, he becomes a humbled more well rounded character. That's what makes the scene when he becomes worthy of mjolnir so emotionally resonant. Carol has a similar scene when she unlocks her full power, but it's nowhere near as powerful as thor's scene. Sure the captain marvel movie does a lot of setting up things, but carol is a pooly executed character, especially compared to thor.
@@metallicnole4514 She's really not. Its as simple as she's brainwashed. She's fighting the whole movie to regain her self-awareness, her personality. She tries here and there through the movie to break through the programming she's received for 6 years, to regain her emotion. She acts exactly how I imagine a kree special forces warrior would, until someone like Fury and her old best friend start chipping away at it. She has a better than thou act early because of her status in the Kree empire, she even calls earth a shithole planet. Why? Because no one in space respects Earth, they only respect the avengers and mutants because of their powers. She acted exactly as she should have. You didnt like the story, thats fine. But they had to explain who this woman was and how she got so much power. You really started to see CM personality shine through in Endgame, like when she gives the smirk to thor after the hammer callback. Or when she's talking to peter as he has the gauntlet. CM2 is gonna be way better because its gonna be bigger, but cm 1 is not a bad movie, not mediocre. You have to watch movies for what they are, not what you'd like to see...
@@Algoody421 Except that it could have been much better executed. She's constantly told by the kree to keep her emotions in check, but you never get the sense that she struggles with it. Even at the end of the movie when she still acts largely the same. They could made her character much more interesting by showing her struggling with her humanity other than just occasional bouts of anger. I think of a movie like equilibrium where christian bale has been 'programmed' not to feel anything, but then regains his humanity and finds he's on the wrong side of things. His arc is quite powerful. There's nothing that powerful about carol's arc. You can try and justify it all you want but the execution is poor and what we're left with is a plank of wood that's least interesting of all the leads in the mcu. But that's just my opinion, if it works for you then great. I'm just not invested in the character. Their gonna need a thor rangarok level of a soft reboot for the sequel to get me on board.

Carol Danvers is the opposite of invisible. She is a tank, an unstoppable force, an unapologetically badass. She’s brash, loud, bold, confident. Even as a man myself, it really gave me the strength to stand for myself and own the fact that I have nothing to prove to anyone. Love her ability to get back up. She’s a major risk taker and that means it doesn’t always pan out the way she hopes it will, but she always learns from her mistakes. She overcame every doubt people had about her. People who limited her, who tried to keep her under their control. Both emotionally and physically. Learned to value herself, that her limits are inside of her and not around other people’s expectations. Unapologetic. An example of owning yourself above anything else. This is my fave MCU film and my fave hero .. loads of messages in just 2 hours. Can’t wait for the sequel next year.

I would recommend watching the Agent Carter show. A lot of the themes in this movie are just portrayed a lot better in the show. It's also canon to the MCU so...

The scene where Carol is getting up from all of her falls is her "I can do this all day" .
Yeah... I sort of wish they'd gone with a timeline of events so we could maybe see her past all in sequence, see her getting 'knocked down' over and over... THEN when that scene happened I think it would have really hit home more.

Glad I'm not the only one who was thinking this. It eliminates the problem of trying to wedge Capt Marvel into Endgame, removes the need for a cheesy 90s period piece, and would have made Natasha's sacrifice hit even harder.

Thor 2 is my least favourite MCU movie, it's just boring as dirt. Captain Marvel is middling for me, some good moments, Talos is great, fun relationship between her and Fury, pretty average story otherwise
I actually thought this movie did such a good job of subverting my expectations with the skulls because the skrulls rule in this movie even though they’re normally bad guys I also love that this movie doesn’t have a generic Hero, Villain battle I love that Carol just tells Yonn Rogg she has nothing to prove to him

@@danparra8174 I definitely respect the filmmakers for creating one of the most iconic pieces of cinema, but I tried watching them all and the only one I actually could sit through without groaning in boredom was Rogue 1, and mostly cause it was on a date in theaters 😂. But also it was kinda good.

In Endgame, when we see Natasha AKA Black Widow eating a sandwich, she cuts it diagonally. Maybe just a chance occurrence? We saw Black Widow and Hulk / Bruce Banner have a bit of intimacy during Age of Ultron. Bruce Banner, being a physicist, would have much more knowledge of Quantum than Natasha. Being who she is, with a background as a spy and in infiltration, she would study it enough to be able to participate in idle conversation with the brilliant scientist she was spending time with.

im perfectly happy with saying it’s head canon and not intentional. However, I think that regardless of which move was written first, they were written about the same time. So I believe it could fully well be intentional. Look up some ‘Marvel hidden congruity’ videos here on TH-cam. I didn’t notice this first, as well, there are many such connections they made throughout the MCU, intentionally, so it would not be unlikely!

I think it’s a weak MCU movie but you can tell when someone thinks it’s a bad movie vs a person just saying it. On the subject of Fury's eye, he does say (One of the Captain America films maybe?) "The last time I trusted someone I lost an eye". Which I always loved when you then see in this film how it happens, because of how much he just takes to Goose instantly and how loving he is, which you never really see in the other films because of it.

My problem was less with the controversy behind Brie Larson’s statements and moreso how she delivered the role. She is constantly being told she’s too emotional, when she has like NO emotion in her face. I know Larson is a good actress, so for her to deliver this character so blandly, it just made no sense. I like the way the reinvent the origin story formula by her finding out her origins the same time we are.
I’m just not interested in heroes who seem to barely struggle. The great thing about past female leads is that they were treated like every other hero… which is equality. But then Captain Marvel and “the scene” in Endgame try and put women on this pedestal… which is not equality. That’s why Ridley in Alien is cool, why Black Widow is cool, why Clarice in Silence of the Lambs is cool, but when Hollywood capitalizes on gender, it creates a problem.
Jay Exci made a good video on how the sequel could be good. I hope Disney finds that video and takes advantage of it because it would make her character more interesting.
i think the 'putting women on the pedestal scene' is more about women in real life in general. because women from decades past, even up to this day, are still being told to shut up and that they won't be good at this or that. and this is hollywood trying to catch up . that's not inequality if you look at it broadly. women have been facing inequality for far too long.
Even for the films you mentioned the female leads are treated as one of the boys and not as a woman on their own. That's not equality in a sense of letting a woman be a woman with the boys. Even Black Widow is a supporting character and not given a solo movie of her own becasue it's thought that it's not worth it. That's not equality.
If you count how many movies were solo led by female or females (or even minorities) vs the movies led by male or with male co-lead, you'd see how unequal everything is. And even those female led films are written and directed by men.
Carlos Pineda I appreciate your response and it clearly comes from a place of love and not hate. That’s my heart as well. I still disagree for the most part, but I can understand women having to work a little harder, and I’m not a woman so I won’t speak on their behalf. However, women characters being written and directed by men is not oppression or inequality. Women being employed by male employers isn’t oppression, it’s business. No one has a problem with characters like Ridley or Alita (Battle Angel) because their gender isn’t the spotlight, it’s their character. Plus, Black Widow has always been a side character, but is now getting a whole movie, while Hawkeye (another side character) is bumped down to a series. Even if a show is more longform, Wanda gets her own show as well.
Again, my response isn’t meant to be hateful, but these discussions are helpful and beneficial for both ends.
To push back on your emotion comment, I think her having little emotion is kinda the point. The whole movie is really all about gaslighting, and women are constantly being gaslighted and told they're too emotional. When in reality, their input during discussions is often misconstrued as emotional, as a tactic to get women to speak less.

i have heard a lot of people at marvel studios talk about _endgame_ and none of them have been able to agree about how the [SPOILER] worked.
Matt just does not pay that much attention to things and thinks he is smarter than he is. How many questions did he have in this one that were apparent just by watching the film. He should actually work for CinemaSins.
All you have to do is look at the video for the Doctor Strange film. A person who has one way of thinking, does not open up their mind to other possibilities and thinks other ways of thinking are bad. Enough about Matt though, Doctor Strange also thought that way but HE learned while Matt did not.

there is absolutely no explanation in _endgame_ of how the movie's central premise works, just a throwaway line about how it's not like another movie. not only is there no coherent explanation in the movie, but as far as i can tell, there is no coherent explanation at all, as no two people at marvel studios seem to agree on it. by contrast, the rules of _captain marvel_ are quite comprehensible.

Joe Yeah, it’s definitely a Deus ex Machina kind of power. I don’t like it when superheroes have power that vast. It has a tendency to make their characters one dimensional. It’s the same reason a lot of people have trouble getting into Superman. But at least he has the weakness around Kryptonite to makes things interesting.
@@susanmaggiora4800 Superman isn't even that overpowered. He's highly invulnerable, yes, but he's actually extremely weak to "magic," though that's more or less an abstract concept. People and Hollywood tend to think Superman can't be beaten and the only thing they can do is use kryptonite. In reality, Superman can actually get punched into submission. Billy Batson Shazam's strength coupled with the magical power of the Wizard Shazam can beat Superman.
Besides, Superman's stories aren't just save the world and beat the bad guy stories, they're about endurance, perseverance, willpower, and the strength to stand back up when the little guy can't and he can.
In essence, Superman is more related to Captain America than Captain Marvel. That's why I didn't like the Captain Marvel movie, cause it just felt to me like a save the world and beat the bad guy story and that's that.
I'm convinced the people with so much hate just have too much time on their hands inventing every single untrue reason to hate her for something she didn't even do. Ridiculous.
All she said was that 'she didnt want the opinion of a 40 year old man about Wrinkle in Time.' Which I think is fair in the context of what she was saying, but I dont necessarily agree with the argument for different reasons. People's experiences differ even from demographic to demographic and those opinions are still useful, imo.

A lot of people missed the central point of this film. It was about self discovery and betrayal. Some conflate her powers with her character growth. That's an overused trope. As mentioned, it was about her finding the power from within and pass the limitations set upon her.
I think the comments about toxic fans was spot on. I felt the same way. Taking things way out of content.
After the finish I feel like they should rewatch the first Iron man, just to see how much their opinions have changed throughout the series

I know I'm late to the game here, but originally there was a comic character from Fawcett Comics named Captain Marvel. The comic ceased publication in the mid 50s. In the face 60s, a short-lived comic company, M. F. Enterprises, created new comic with a completely unrelated character named Captain Marvel. Shortly after, Marvel Comics approached them and paid them to cease publishing the comic (due to their namesake being used) and created their own version of Captain Marvel with the charatcer being named "Mar-Vell" In 1972, DC acquired the licensing rights to the original Captain Marvel from Fawcett (and later the full rights). This created a legal problem as both DC and Marvel were using the same name. In the end, Marvel ended up keeping the "Captain Marvel" name with the main character being "Mar-Vell" and DC changed the name of their Captain Marvel to Shazam! The Mar-Vell character ultimately died of cancer in 1982's "The Death of Captain Marvel," written and drawn by Jim Starlin, the creator of Thanos.
