My Sakuraco box came in same day you posted! We shared a Sakura cream cookie together, Rachel and I! LoL
9:24 the ziggie stitch is usually for reinforcing stuff. Using it isn't a bad idea, but i would've probably used it first, then used the regular stitch to line it up on the "outside" of the fabric. In theory it doesn't need one.
Protip: being slow with thick material is a smart idea regardless of any other aspect. When the needle leaves the fabric, it needs to cinch the "knot" and that action is kind of against the movement of the fabric as its being traveled backwards (or away from you depending on how you look at it). If you do this too fast with normal material, you'll get just get a few errors in the spacing, you'll likely barely even notice them, but with thicker fabrics, there's a high chance you'll grab the needle and either break it, bend it or poke a divot in the plating. So slow is the name of the game when you're doing thicknesses that exceed that threshold.
Said threshold is dependent on what machine you have, some can stitch some really thick fabric fast, faster than the Brother at full tilt, some don't even care, because they use a rolling mechanism. For a machine in this grade, you'd likely have to experiment. In theory, nothing but the needle breaks.
I've an older Singer, at worst i've only filled the plate with divots in the past, had to sand them down after a while, kept grabbing finer materials.
For the love of Pete Rachel, please stop being so hard on yourself! Many of us who are crafts people admire your work! I hope that it's of comfort to you. You really did an amazing job❤
I'll try to stop focusing on the imperfections in my work! It's difficult to unlearn. But I definitely think that would be a super healthy mindset shift in a lot of ways. Ganbarimasu!
@@RachelandJunAdventures it's hard not to be a perfectionist.. I find reframing it as a "What I can do better next time" and not a "What I did wrong this time" really helps, though!
who in the ploopy is pete
@@JasperisCasper This!!! Failure is a teacher. Even when things don't turn out quite to your expectations, you've still learned something from them. There's no need to be hard on yourself for not doing it perfectly the first time, just learn from it and do better the next time!
Making something for the first time is never going to be easy, I can't count how many needles that I got poke with as the model for my sister growing up and she had the top grade for sowing at the time.
Nevermind 'The Cone of Shame', Poki's wearing The Cone of The Intergalactic Cat-federation! He's a little Space Cowboy
Space Ship Captain if the get the boat captain hat out too
See you space cowboy...
God... The stroke of luck Poki had when he ran across the road in front of Jun and Rachel. He is now the most spoiled little guy, who gets everything he needs. It warms my heart
She even risked stopping on the side of the road which apparently is illegal. That's true love for cats :')
Yes ♥♥♥
Exactly what I was thinking. I can't imagine what he went through in the streets and to have come so far. It warms my heart
Also Poki: "YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAOOOOO"s his way into dumpsters and odd corners because he is just too damn clever for child locks. 😂
My poor baby Poki needed another surgery but he's home and doing well, just still a little drugged up!
Our three remaining cats each go in over the next week for teeth cleaning/a couple teeth removals but those are simple procedures and they should all be fine!
We recently did their yearly full health checkups, and Poki and Pichi came back in great shape (minus Poki's allergy issues). Haku and Nagi are both in early stage chronic kidney disease, reflected solely in their creatinine levels (both 2.13). They're both on special diets now with a twice daily pill and probiotics, and their creatinine is stable! Haku's SDMA is still only 10, Nagi's 9, and their BUN and IP are within normal ranges, so we hope to be able to keep them stable and healthy for many years to come. Japan is also in the process of approving a special drug specifically for chronic kidney disease in cats, which seems quite promising!
❤❤❤🙏🏻
A friend of my roomie has an elder cat that was just approved for something new over here in the states, I wonder if it's the same thing. I hope things go well.
Dr Toru Miyazaki is developing the drug along with Claireluvcat. She's going to bring her cat TT to Japan for treatment. TT will travel with her emotional support cat, Lulu.
Thank you for the video. I'm sure Pokey finds the surgeries uncomfortable, but lap-time makes up for it. 😅 The care makes me wish for a Pokemon Game, where the Player is the Professor. Pokemon SNAP comes close, but it's not really caring and cuddles. Well, going by the anime, it's more caring and teaching, but I like cuddles, so that is what I would do if I was a Professor and the Pokemon didn't mind. I hope Pokey appreachiates your effort. At least you find it cute. Though... magician Pokey... Somehow, I think he would use that power mainly for making food appear.😂 Best wishes from europe
Is that the drug that Claire LuvCat's TT is taking? She came over to Japan with TT and worked closely with the lab to help get the drug out there. Here's hoping it will be able to help the boys and that it saves many kittehs in the future ❤❤❤
As a quilter and sewer, for safety sake, please never cut toward yourself, always away. And don’t hold the fabric cutter like a pencil. Use a stronger, more stable grip with your whole hand, like you would a knife. Also, it’s best to wash fabric beforehand so there’s no shrinking after cutting and sewing. Lastly, pinking shears work great when trimming excess seam allowance to keep it from fraying or you can use an overlock stitch, which is usually looks like a zigzag between straight stitches. Happy and safe sewing!
I had to scroll so far to find this comment 😭 I was losing my shit the whole time watching that. But, you live and learn, and at least she only nicked herself.
Also fraying shouldn't be a problem with projects like this, since the raw fabric edge gets hidden inside?
@@erionnebelprinz7117probably not an issue. the cones also aren't hard wearing like clothes or a bag.
You beat me to it! I was cringing watching how she held the rotary cutter.
Rachel, in japanese: it is a sakura tree!
Jun, in bewildered english: you didnt believe me???
That small exchange was hilarious to me.
"Jun our yard makes me so happy" you guys make my heart swell up with happiness. you're just so cute. hope poki feels better soon
I have been a silent subscriber for many years now just wanna say thank you for all the care you've given for poki and pichi, I always have soft spot for stray cats and rescued cats because they have struggled the most out there in the streets
I also have a soft spot for strays and ferals. Seeing Poki and Pichi living the good life is heartwarming.
@@dao8805 yeah and the way poki's having health issues makes me so thankful he got rescued and is being taking care of greatly not all cats out there are fortunate sadly
Where they not all stray cats? I thought they said the adoption process in japan for not japanese people (like Rachel) is really hard because japanese pound thinks that they will leave Japan soon and go back to there country?
@@natalieaX I'm not sure how Rachel and Jun got Nagi and Haku. Didn't they start their channels AFTER they already had those two? Maybe they should do a video on how they came to have their first two "children" :)
@@dao8805 I thought they said it a long time ago in a video, but I have no idea which. I know Nagi is Juns cat and the other 3 where picked/found by Rachel. But making an video with info about all 4 would be interesting like how old are they and so on. Imagine baby Haku videos
Have you truly ever used a rotary cutter if you haven't run over your finger? 🤣
Welcome to the club, Rachel!
Okay I'm glad it's not just me! haha
They are even more dangerous when dull so watch out. My mother has recently learned to sow with my sewing stuff while I am at college and she found this out. She asked why I never asked for new blades. I said I was lazy and I am careful. She now buys them in bulk. She also bought a huge cutting mat which I could never justify buying myself and she never understood until now.
Sewing is such a dangerous hobby, I love it.
Hehe it's like a rite of passage. I went and got a cute pastel mint green instead of the perfectly good cheaper option and then failed to put the cover on when putting it on my sewing bag. That day it was a red rotary cutter.
@@RachelandJunAdventures I was watchin you sew with the pin heads towards the pressure foot and was so stressed! Place the pins perpendicular to the stitching when you go to sew, with the pin heads poking off the edges of the fabric. It makes it super easy to remove them as you go.
Another thing, I have NEVER heard of prewashing fusible interfacing. I've been sewing for nearly 25 of my 30 years so I am quite confused.
ALSO!!! You should be able to find the Brother manual PDF in English for free online if you would like to learn more about your machine.
So cute either way! Be safe
Those sad drugged up eyes at the end are so cute. Poor baby but at least he is getting mommy cuddles.
vet care in japan is so detailed T_T i wish so badly we got detailed reports like that in the US, like yes we get reports after surgeries and stuff but i've never gotten anything THAT detailed. i so badly wish the US had better health care for our pets too :'((
I agree. Mostly, we just get the bill$$$$.
I'm a vet tech! Don't ever feel bad to ask for a full itemized bill! You can also ask for full vet records!
@@zziemann5786 the point is I shouldn't have to ask for a full report of these things, they should be readily available without extra hoops to jump through. and an itemized bill is also NOT what I am talking about, I am talking about a full report of care during visits like this.
@@Rawrz013ah I apologize for misunderstanding
Vets prob think because they go over the details or would say if there's a problem, then they don't need a report. I'd be fine knowing that I could ask for one and get it rather than a law all vets must provide full reports. Just me thinking if the vet says no problems, I'm not worried about not being able to read the details. Even for post surgery.
Pichi stalking Poki is so immensely cute! She has such affection in her heart… if only she could share it with you!
Rachel your cones look amazing! I adore the starry quilted fabric so much.
If you end up making any more cones I would recommend sliding a piece of harder plastic inside the padded fabric so that it is still cozy for the kitties but not foldable. I worked as a vet tech and a common issue we had was with pet parents opting for alternative soft cones and not supervising their kitties, which led to the cats smushing or manipulating the cones to scratch out their stitches.
Adding the hard plastic inside the cloth should avoid that issue while still allowing for the cones to be super cute and comfy!
I wish Poki a quick and easy recovery
Oh, thank you for the info! I don't think it would be too hard to make one of these with plastic in the middle
the fact that Rachel made a map with labels for each plant is SO relatable. im not into gardening but this is so me if I were.
I garden and I plants stuff, and I say "I'll remember what this is and where I put it." and 3 months later I'm completely lost in my own garden.
whats stopping you from gardening
@@lunix3259 i don't like it xD i like plants but not taking care of them.
Poki is doing well! Hoping for a speedy recovery for our adorable air raid siren.
I think the galactic cone turned out great!! if you want to prevent fraying, I like to do a straight stitch and then cut about a 1/4” from the seam. then I use the overlock stitch (the zigzag one that you used) but I make sure to sew so that the left side of the overlock stitch is just to the right of the stitch and the right side of the overlock stitch is landing *outside* the cut edge. this basically encases the raw edge in thread. I hope this helps!! 🪡
ohhhhhh so that's how that sort of stitch is done! I never imagined I'd be able to do that at home. I'll definitely try that out next time. Thank you!!
@@RachelandJunAdventures There should also be a separate foot for your sewing machine to use with these type of stitches! You did amazing tho! I wish my first project looked that great'!
@@RachelandJunAdventures Adding to the comment above! With the flower shaped cone, to help make the shape look better, sometimes u need to snip into the excess fabric or cut small triangles out (but make sure u don't cut the stitches you sew!) this just helps reduce the amount of bulkiness and makes rounder shapes look smoother when turning inside out. you did a really great job though ! i hope all the cats recover well from their vet visits
ah yes i needed to know this as well
Poki looks simultaneously profoundly tolerant, but also promising swift and unrelenting revenge some time in the future.
we've had Captain Poki, now we have Astronaut Poki! I hope everyone recovers from their various surgeries with ease
Rachel speaking Japanese with Jun, an update on the Poki/Peachy friendship, and a tutorial on how to make a soft cone, my perfect comfort vid finally exists.
I love Nagi saying "hi" at 17:42 so cute. And the cones turned out really great
17:42 Nagi's little "meh" is what my heart needed today! Best wishes on your recovery, Poki! ♥
I feel so guilty for laughing outloud for Poki's low screamings in the end. Poor boy but omg these MEAAAAAAAWS
20:40 i feel so bad for giggling but that little drawing documenting where the tumor was is so cute
my heart broke when he missed his jump in the end! Get well soon Poki!
Those cones are beautiful! And so much more comfortable, I bet. Did anyone else see Rachel in the garden in her long laced-back dress, and immediately think she could be a darling anime character?
"You look like the centre of the universe!"
"Galactic Poki!"
AWW! Thank you for making me smile. I've been going through a rough patch vis-a-vis my stray pets and this cheered me up a little.
Ah yes, the dreaded rotary blade. Welcome to danger!
As for the flower cone (and curves in general), not sure if you did it, but cutting some notches along the edge may help with the shape!
It looks great, though! I'm so excited to see more projects in the future.
Thanks for the tip! 🌸
I love how the Sakuraco ads just feel like a normal part of the video at this point 😆 They should be happy to have you as partners.
Poor Poki. I made soft cones for my cats and my dog. Very successful.
8:50 pro tip: always put the pins in so that you can pull them out towards you, when you sew.
Aw, poor sweet Poki. He might have been hoarse from the breathing tube, that's what happened to me when I had surgery. If you ever make another cone, you should make a pink flower shaped one so your kitties can be pretty sakura blossoms!
Oh Rachel, please stop being so hard on yourself. You make lovely crafts and you have suck a good eye for design and style!
We all want to make stuff like the pros but sometimes you just have to be happy with your work. As long as you do your best there is nothing to be sorry for.
Mr Poki is the prettiest flower in the garden. Wishing you and the cats the best
I live in the northern part of sweden and the snow hasn’t even melted here, I’m actually going to freaking cry dude. Your garden is so beautiful and I wish i could be there
I am always amazed by Rachel's creativity. If she can't find exactly what she wants when she wants it, the lady makes it with her bare hands. Perfect is boring, my dear. You did an amazing job! ❤
The stitch you used is called a blanket stitch i believe, and you are supposed to line up the straight edge of the stitch with the trimmed edge of your fabric!
You are doing amazing, I love to see all the projects you do :)
the stitch i would have used is the "zig zag" stitch in place of a sedger. some goes with that one. you trim them stitch.
What a beautiful garden. I wonder how a jacaranda tree would do in the climate there? Gorgeous purple flowers...
I actually have one! It's survived two winters planted in the ground now, but both times it lost all its foliage. I'll have to keep an eye on it to see how it fares over time, but I know there are at least a couple jacarandas planted in the city here that managed to mature!
Poki is such a sweet soul. So kind and patient, loves his people and his pride and just requests food and cuddles in return-mostly food. LOL
Poor, Mr. Poki. Glad he is feeling better and looking stylish.
Those roller cutters are usually used with quilting rulers and are much safer since your fingers are on the rulers. But I've definitely used them free handed many times and have my own battle scars. Also drunk Pokii sounds like Waluigi.
Poor sweet Poki. I love how much detail the vets give. I also love seeing Poki and Pichi curled up together, it's all I needed in my life today.
Why am I crying over Rachel's excitement about their yard :")
Poki is a champ, rest well 🥰
That is one spaced out cat. Lol Glad he got the tumor removed. Hope for a quick recovery
Their little meows 😢 I love the cats so much
Poor Poki 😢 Hope the little fella heals up quick!
the lil meow yawn was so cute Im crying
Ohhh the poor croaky baby! Good thing he has a snazzy bespoke cone collar to make him look fancy!
I’m always so grateful that you guys never make us wait for another video to show us that surgery went well. I know it’s fairly routine for Poki at this point, but I’m always happy and relieved to see that he’s alright. ❤
The fabric cones are cute! The flower one would have been super cute if the fabric pattern was sakura themed. Or maybe daisies. But i love the starry night collar. He’s definitely the center of the universe and we all just spin around him. 💙💙
Sweet little Poki, he always melts my heart! I hope he is doing well and makes a quick recovery 💕
Nagi's li'l squeak was the cutest thing ever!
Awww his old man greys are coming out. Hes a beautiful kitty
Poki is such a good boy with these, the last time we had to put a cone on our lad Dave he went nuts and ended up ripping a claw out getting it off.
He's looking so much more comfortable than I've ever seen cats in store bought cones and suits, well done! It always warms my heart to see how much love you show your cats!
5:18 this was such a fitting edit of the lizard 😂, very Poki-energy when he yells
Aw Pokis old man voice at the end! I’m glad everything went well and the cones are delightful. Be proud Rachel.
Really fun to see your garden thriving too.
Pichi just wants to follow big bro Poki around. So cute!
I remember when my crazy dog had knee surgery, she'd get her knee into the edge of the cone to lick the sutures. I ended up duct taping it with extra stuff to make it longer. Your cone is incredible!
These look great! A lot of newer sewists can be a bit nervous drafting their own patterns and experimenting (even with simple ones), but you did a great job. A few minor mistakes (that you'll learn from!) are part of the process.
Four is the number of cats I can take care of right now….. proceeds to run outside and take care of the numerous local kitties. :). Which is awesome!
I love how your garden is just a beautiful ecosystem, and your garden cares for all the animals 😊
Aww! Poor Poki! He’s as high as a kite!
Our tuxedo cat Maggie has been diagnosed with an allergy to U V rays after we found an abscess on the back of her neck. This was during our winter. She likes to sit in the sun (don’t most cats?). She was given antibiotics and we applied an ointment until it was completely gone. Our long term solution was to have the windows covered with a layer on the inside to block said U V rays.
I wish all cats, dogs and pets in general can have perents as loving and caring as Rachel and Jun are
You guys inspier me to make my kitty happier and happier everyday by buying her some toys and treats and even make some diy projects as you do
You bring so much kindness and love to this world
And you also make me really happy by just sharing your own happines with us
Thank you🙏❤
The flower cone plus those flower cat hats you got awhile back for super flower poki. 😆
Rachel, you should take pictures of you with the Phoenix Acacia. Your hair and that plant look so gorgeous together.
I can't believe I never thought of making a soft cone. Stealing this for the next time my dogs or cats need surgery since they hate cones so much. I'm so jealous of the affordable vet care! When my cat needed to get a tumor removed from her jaw it cost us over $8,000. It was money my husband and I did not have to spare and the tumor came back after about a year.
You guys are the only people I watch the sponsored ad all the way through, you guys make it so entertaining and personable and the product looks amazing. If I wasn't vegan or a broke college student, I would totally get a subscription 😅 Yay for Poki being the centre of the universe! ❤️
Aww poor Poki. But at least he looks adorable while recovering. Hope all the kitties do well at their appointments.
Sewing tips! I can help!
- Wash fabric first before sewing so it shrinks first, rather than after you sew when uneven shrinkage might cause the thing you made to warp
- To keep edges from fraying, use the zigzag stich over the edge of the fabric that you want to bind so the thread wraps around the edge to enclose it
- Clipping the seam allowance of curves before turning them inside makes it smoother when it's right-side out
But the cones came out really good! They're so cute!! Flower kitties🌸
Poki's so beautiful with his little conmes.
Poki is such a good boy 🥰
Always nice to see a Rachel and Jun upload! Glad to see you guys are doing well!
Your garden is beautiful...and that's an amazing cone you made. So thoughtful to make that soft cone. You could sell those.
Poor Poki, I hope he feels better and doesn’t hurt much 😢❤
Aww when Poki tried to jump and fell! Poor baby! Glad he's doing okay. Also the cones look awesome to me. I love the adjustable velcro
in the future, instead of the faux overlock stitch you used, you can also sew with a small zig-zag stitch! it's very strong and also helps against fraying. if it's small, it can also basically work the same as your straight stitch too.
It's a galaxy of Poki!
Nagi's little mic meow was the cutest thing 🥰
Aww, that collar must be so soft on his neck. Well done Rachel! It's gorgeous.
Use that zigzag stitch at the very edge of the fabric, the point of the triangle bits should be just off the fabric, its sort of like how a overlocker works. For something being flipped inside out like the cone though you really don't have to worry! Its more for exposed seams like inside clothing :)
Poki is such a sweet boy in his cone 😭
The little bug in the sakura flower was just so cute!
Poor Poki baby! I bet he prefers the soft over the plastic hard cone.
The yard is looking so good. 😊
Rachel, you're doing great for a beginner! I never remember how to use the bobbin-winder correctly either, and I've been sewing for years. I'm sure other people have already told you how to use those edge stitches, so I'll just wish Poki a speedy recovery-get well soon, you little fire alarm!
If you need more ideas for cat-themed sewing projects, home-made toys are quick and easy and you can use fabric scraps. You can also repair old cat beds, or make new custom ones! The power is in your hands now... use it wisely.
Rachel looks so angelic in that white dress ♥︎
Sending well wishes to King Poki may he recover quickly and go back to attempting to raid your garbage cans lol
Both cones turned out great! The petal outline stitching is called topstitching, and I think it was a nice touch. My own tip, if you make something like this again, is to clip your corners before turning the piece right side out. It would help them lay flat once flipped. And I never pre wash my interfacing, I've never heard of that tbh! Hasn't caused any issues so far. I will say, an excellent TH-cam channel for learning some of the sewing fundamentals (in English) is Evelyn Wood, she has taught me a lot over the years even though I have a solid decade of sewing experience under my belt. If I ever want to learn a different technique or tool I check her channel first, because she is an excellent teacher.
When my doggy Muffin had to wear a cone after gutting an eye removed i also got her a soft cone similar to this, it was 100 times better than other cones available
17:42 "Hi?" "Hey." I love when cats talk
20:28 I think it's really nice/cool that you also get such detailed feedback/information from the vet's office after your cat(s) undergo treatment
I can't wait for Rachel to make an Elizabethan style ruff for the cats. Great work on the soft cones and I'm so glad the surgery went well. I think your vet is really good to give you such detailed information AND photographs of the procedures - I think it helps to show how much work is actually involved and also acts to reassure the owners that they're not being overcharged. Really good.
All the good health in the world to Rachel and Jun's fur kids ❤️❤️❤️❤️
You both have made me more confident to try in my crafting and to not be afraid to experiment in cooking. I still mess up with both of them, but I am still willing to work through them because I know that you both still are willing to tell us your less than ideal results that still look amazing to all. Thank you both for inspiring me to believe in myself again.
Poki's the prettiest ❤
I had put to sleep mine a week and 2 days ago , he was 10 years old and tongue cancer got him suffering, i tried to get him as much help as possible, and now i miss him dearly, i hope Poki and your others are doing well , enjoy their presence every day because you will miss their love when they won't be any longer with us 😭😭
Get well soon Poki! I love all the crafts you make, Rachel! Thank you for sharing with us!
I,m so glad that Poki is fine. Thank you, guys
Rachel, the videos where you guys make things are my favorite! I love that you craft and build!
